Romans 6:12-23  English Standard Version (ESV)

¹² Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. ¹³ Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. ¹⁴ For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Slaves to Righteousness

¹⁵ What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! ¹⁶ Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves,^[a] you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? ¹⁷ But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, ¹⁸ and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. ¹⁹ I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

²⁰ For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. ²¹ But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. ²² But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. ²³ For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

 

Believe it or not, there are some people who think that since they are believers in Jesus, they can just go and of whatever their sinful mind and body desires.  They can just go get blasted drunk and become an alcoholic if they want; they can sleep around as much as they want; they can cheat, lie, steal, and even withhold forgiveness as much as they want. 

 

They think that as long as they are in church every once in a while and confess their sinfulness, even if they aren't truly sorry, that they are good to go. 

 

While all of our sins are covered under the cross, including present and future ones, that doesn't give us license to go and do whatever and live however.  That is foolishness.  If you were held captive by a torturer, who beat you and hurt you in unimaginable ways, and you escaped, would you even think about going back? 

Recently I have seen several people I know rejoice at being sober after a long time of dealing with alcoholism.  They talked about how good they feel, how their mind is straight for the first time in a long time, and how they are full of joy.  Why would a person go back to the opposite of that? 

 

We do, because we are sinful human beings, but we shouldn't stay there.  As soon as we slip into sin, we need to pray to the Lord to pull us out of the pit.  That's what the life of the Christian is all about, continual confession, repentance, and living by the Spirit.  That's what it means to live by the Spirit.  I urge you to live by the Spirit today and every day!

 

Prayer: Lord, thank you for filling me with Your Spirit so I won't gratify the desires of the sinful nature to my own detriment and so that I can remain in faith toward you.  Amen.

Right now we have seven people signed up!  Will you join them?  Reply to sing up or sign your name to the sign up sheet on the table in the narthex.

 

Throughout the month of June we will be highlighting our Stephen Ministry program. 

 

Stephen Ministry is a caring ministry that is carried out by lay people.  It has been a part of St. John's in various forms and levels since 2003.  Many people have gone through the training and cared for others with their training.  These people are called "care givers".  Many more have benefitted from the help these people have provided.  These people are called "care receivers".  This is a tremendously beneficial ministry to both care giver and care receivers as both grow in faith and as many of them become friends if they weren't already. 

 

It is also a great benefit to our congregation for many different reasons!  Care givers learn how to be better Christian moms, dads, husbands, wives, friends, and church members.  The congregation grows as our community finds out how caring and loving we are as a congregation through this ministry.  It is a wonderful thing!

 

We are in need of some new Stephen ministers.  It is a commitment, but the commitment is definitely worth it!  You will be blessed beyond measure if you go through the training and become a Stephen Minister.  PLEASE NOTE THAT WE NEED MEN TO BE STEPEHEN MINISTERS JUST AS MUCH AS WOMEN!!

 

Last Sunday at our 8:30 worship, Chrissy Groeber and Marcia Sevier were installed as our new Stephen Leaders!!  They will be starting a new Stephen Ministry training as soon as everyone who is interested signs up and a start date and time can be established. 

 

Please prayerfully consider this and then come to church this coming weekend and sign up or reply to this email and I will sign you up!

Youth and Sunday school stuff for everyone to know about!!

1. 7-12 grade Youth Highway clean up and Bible study at Dairy Queen afterward.  We'll meet at the Aldi parking lot at 6:30.  It will take about a half hour to clean up the highway.  Then will head over to DQ for a cool treat.  Please bring your own money for DQ. 

 

2. This coming Sunday, during Sunday school, Amanda Nordwald will be teaching a special Holy Yoga class for kids and anyone else who wants to join her!  No need to bring a mat.  Please join in on the fun and exercise!!

 

3. Next Wednesday, June 28, there will be an ALL YOUTH night, 5:30-7:30!!  There will be pizza and fun/games!!  You are asked to bring everything for a birthday cake (a boxed cake mix, candles, and icing) for Turning Point…  Why?  A lot of times kids live there and even have their birthdays while they are there.  This will help them out tremendously to take care of the kids who live there.

DEVOTION:  Jeremiah 20:7-13  English Standard Version (ESV)

⁷ O Lord, you have deceived me,
    and I was deceived;
you are stronger than I,
    and you have prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all the day;
    everyone mocks me.
⁸ For whenever I speak, I cry out,
    I shout, "Violence and destruction!"
For the word of the Lord has become for me
    a reproach and derision all day long.
⁹ If I say, "I will not mention him,
    or speak any more in his name,"
there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
    shut up in my bones,
and I am weary with holding it in,
    and I cannot.
¹⁰ For I hear many whispering.
    Terror is on every side!
"Denounce him! Let us denounce him!"
    say all my close friends,
    watching for my fall.
"Perhaps he will be deceived;
    then we can overcome him
    and take our revenge on him."
¹¹ But the Lord is with me as a dread warrior;
    therefore my persecutors will stumble;
    they will not overcome me.
They will be greatly shamed,
    for they will not succeed.
Their eternal dishonor
    will never be forgotten.
¹² O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous,
    who sees the heart and the mind,^[a]
let me see your vengeance upon them,
    for to you have I committed my cause.

¹³ Sing to the Lord;
    praise the Lord!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
    from the hand of evildoers.

 

 

Whoa, this seems harsh, doesn't it?  It is unless we know the back story.  Jeremiah was being persecuted for speaking God's Word.  He was not treated kindly at all.  The people, especially the people in the church, the priest and scribes, didn't listen.  Read the first part of chapter 20 to get an idea of what was going on.  The chief officer in the house of the Lord beat him up and put him in chains.  

 

We live in a time when the Word of the Lord is not heeded by much of society.  People don't want to hear it.  They scoff at it.  They treat those who speak it and those who believe in it with disdain and ridicule.  Many mock Christianity and the Word of God and even call it evil.  

 

I love the words of Jeremiah here when he says, "I say, 'I will not mention him, or speak any more of his name,' there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot."  As much as we would like to keep from speaking the truth, because it goes against the world, we cannot stop.  It will keep burning within us and cause us great grief until we do.  

 

In the end, when all is said and done, and this world is burned away, all that will be left is God's Word.  If you cling to it you will do well.  If you put your trust in it and not in what the world says, you will have peace in the end.  There may not be peace in the world today, but there will be peace in your heart right now, and in the world to come there will be complete peace.

 

So hold on tight to God's Word!  Firmly plant your feet in it!  Study it so you will become more sure of it.  Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest it so that the peace of Christ will dwell in you richly and more might come to know the love of Jesus Christ through you…. even if they don't wanna hear it.  

 

Let us pray: Lord God, help me to stick to Your Word and proclaim it boldly and confidently, even when people don't want to hear it.  Amen.

So today I'll be serious, because I'm tired. Anyway according to the "experts, Beth-aven basically can be translated as"house of nothingness; i.e., "of idols". It is believed – by some – to be named after a place in the mountains of Benjamin, east of Bethel ( Joshua 7:2 ; 18:12 ; 1 Samuel 13:5 ). In Hosea 4:15 ; 5:8 ; 10:5 it stands for "Bethel" (q.v.), and it is so called because it was no longer the "house of God," but "the house of idols," referring to the calves there worshipped.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 91:1-10  New International Version (NIV)

¹ Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.^[a]
2 I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust."

³ Surely he will save you
    from the fowler's snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
⁴ He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
⁵ You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
⁶ nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
⁷ A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
⁸ You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.

⁹ If you say, "The Lord is my refuge,"
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
¹⁰ no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.

 

As the storms rolled through this past Saturday night, and I was awakened by a very loud clap of thunder, I got up out of bed and looked out the window.  I saw the wind blowing and the rain pouring down.  I took for granted that I could do that, that I could look out at the rain and the storm and still be comfortably in my own house.  I soon went back to bed and back to sleep as the storm quickly moved through, not once thanking God for his provision and protection. 

 

The wonderful truth is that God doesn't take his protection away from us when we don't appreciate it.  He still protects us from the evil one day by day.  Trouble will befall us from time to time.  We will have to endure pain, and even suffering and death, yet as long as we remain in the Lord and in the shelter of his wings, the devil will never be able to overtake us.  He cannot have us.  We are protected completely from eternal death by the grace, mercy, and peace of our Lord Jesus!

 

Don't take it for granted!  When you pray, and you should pray often, start your prayers with thanksgiving for what God has given you!  This will make you remember the goodness and grace of the Lord and fill you with joy!  Remind others of what God has done for you, and this will fill you with joy as well!  Then, at the end of the day, and even throughout the day, REST assured that the Lord will keep you under the shelter of his mighty wings forever! 

 

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for gathering us under your wing as a hen gathers her chicks!  Keep me from wandering out to this dangerous world, keep me from temptation, and deliver me from evil.  Amen.

Amaziah – or Amatzyah, which means "the strength of the Lord," for those of you who are interested – became the king of Judah after his father Joash was assassinated. He – unlike some other kings of that time – followed the law of Moses, and only killed the dudes who offed his dad; not their children. In the first part of his reign – which lasted 29 years - he reigned alone. But in the 5th year of his tenure, his son, Uzziah – who was only 16 – became a co-regent with him.
