Access Bible Study (for Special Needs Learners),
St. John's Lutheran-Arnold

Last year, a young adult named Brooke was confirmed. This might not seem all that remarkable, but it really is. You see, Brooke is a child of God with special needs. She may look a little different. She may act a little different. And she definitely learns a little differently. But she really isn't all that different. That's because she is a beloved child of God, and He uniquely created her inmost being. And, after being confirmed, Brooke wasn't quite finished with God. She simply asked one question: "Now what?"

You see, Confirmation was the not the end of Brooke's spiritual journey. In fact, it was just the beginning. Brooke felt God drawing her closer to Him. She had a hunger to keep learning God's word. So Brooke, with a little help, started Access Bible Study, an opportunity for young adults with special needs to meet in faith and fellowship. Evidently, God wasn't finished with Brooke, either. He used her simple question to jump start an entirely new opportunity for her to help reach even more people for Him. Read more . . .

Lunch will be provided. Training will be provided by
Pastor Charles Schultz, LCMS MO District Disaster Coordinator.

4 Phases of Emotions
National Credentialing

Registration is $35 and helps cover the cost of the training materials, and the L.E.R.T. vest, which is required to be worn in a disaster response situation. Deadline to register is July 21^st.

In order to better manage volunteers and resources, FEMA has finalized a guideline on credentialing volunteers for large-scale disasters. The federal guidelines indicate that volunteers responding to a disaster should be trained and certified. This training will prepare team member for credentialing and will focus on the safety, work, and ministry of Lutherans as Early Responders.

Shortened men's breakfast tomorrow morning

I and others would like to attend Evelyn Toedebusch's funeral in St.Charles tomorrow. We'll still have breakfast, but we'll be done by 9:15 to make it to the funeral on time.

Visitation and Funeral arrangements for Evelyn Toedebusch

Evelyn Toedebusch will be laid to rest on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. from Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Charles, Mo. Visitation will be from 9-10 with a luncheon to follow the service. Internment will be at St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery in New Melle, Mo. following the luncheon.

Prayer request for Boeger family and other friends and family of Evelyn Toedebusch

Please pray for my family as Mom, Evelyn Toedebusch, made her way to heaven this morning at 1:20 a.m. Arrangements will be made later this morning.

DEVOTION: Matthew 9:35-10:8 New International Version (NIV)

The Workers Are Few

³⁵Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. ³⁶When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. ³⁷Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. ³⁸Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

²These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; ³Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; ⁴Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

⁵These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. ⁶Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. ⁷As you go, proclaim this message: 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.' ⁸Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,^[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

Did you catch that last sentence? That's the key right there. "Freely you have received; freely give"! You did nothing to earn any of the blessings with which God has blessed you. You have done nothing to earn his forgiveness. You've done nothing extraordinary to earn his love. Nothing you have done in your life is worthy of the blessings you have received. They're all a gift! Your job, your house, your health, your food, your clothing, everything is a gift.

So why do we treat it as if we did earn it? And why do people think that if they act a certain way, or say a certain thing, or pray a certain way; that somehow they are going to receive more or different blessings? Everything you have is because of God's grace.

So what are you to do with everything God has given you, including your abilities, your time, your money, and your forgiveness? I repeat, "Freely you have received; freely give!" Let that be your motto. Someone needs a coat? Freely give. Someone needs money? Freely give. Someone needs a church home? Freely give! Someone needs to hear "I forgive you" from you? Freely give!

Lord, remind me that everything I have received was only because of your mercy and generosity. Help me to give freely and fully without expecting anything in return. Amen. _______________________________________________________________________

From Don Nolte: He is the second of the minor prophets probably of Judah and contemporary with Uzziah about 810-758 B. C.

From Pat King: This is a trick question. Scholars aren't really sure and have assigned a bunch of different dates. I looked this up on a bunch of different sites and the only thing everyone agreed on, was that they didn't really know. So, he wrote it when God deemed the time was right.

And that's a fact.

You may ask, "which one is right"? The answer: Both. We don't know for sure, Some have sais, and rightly so, that since he mentions the valley of King Jehoshaphat in 3:2, it would have to be during or after his reign. 873B.C. or later. Others have said that it mentions a great plague of locusts, which happened during Joash's reign, it is said that Joel wrote his prophecy during or after his reign. The key is that we don't really know.

STEPHEN MINISTRY: Throughout the month of June we will be highlighting our Stephen Ministry program.

Stephen Ministry is a caring ministry that is carried out by lay people. It has been a part of St. John's in various forms and levels since 2003. Many people have gone through the training and cared for others with their training. These people are called "care givers". Many more have benefitted from the help these people have provided. These people are called "care receivers". This is a tremendously beneficial ministry to both care giver and care receivers as both grow in faith and as many of them become friends if they weren't already.

It is also a great benefit to our congregation for many different reasons! Care givers learn how to be better Christian moms, dads, husbands, wives, friends, and church members. The congregation grows as our community finds out how caring and loving we are as a congregation through this ministry. It is a wonderful thing!

We are in need of some new Stephen ministers. It is a commitment, but the commitment is definitely worth it! You will be blessed beyond measure if you go through the training and become a Stephen Minister. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE NEED MEN TO BE STEPEHEN MINISTERS JUST AS MUCH AS WOMEN!!

Last Sunday at our 8:30 worship, Chrissy Groeber and Marcia Sevier were installed as our new Stephen Leaders!! They will be starting a new Stephen Ministry training as soon as everyone who is interested signs up and a start date and time can be established.

DEVOTION: Romans 5:6-15 English Standard Version (ESV)

⁶For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. ⁷For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— ⁸but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ⁹Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. ¹⁰For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.¹¹More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

¹²Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men^[a] because all sinned— ¹³for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. ¹⁴Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

¹⁵But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.

Did Jesus die for all your sin or just some of it? Do you have to cooperate with Jesus to work out a deal for your soul? Do you have to be good, whatever that means, to get to heaven? How good is good enough?

We could keep going with these questions, and we could keep debating it all; or we could just believe what the Scriptures say. Paul says that "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since then we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God."

I don't think we can we can get any more clear than that. We are saved by grace through faith on account of Christ!

I'd like to make it about worship and Bible Study attendance. I'd like to say that you have to be in worship or Bible study or your soul is in danger of hell, but Jesus doesn't say that. Good worship and Bible Study attendance is only motivated by the love and grace of Christ. We aren't motivated to love and good works through the law. We are only motivated by love!

I pray that you are motivated by the love of Christ more and more so that you may be filled more and more with His grace to overflowing so it flows from you to everyone around you! As that happens, be confident that you are saved from the wrath of God and will live forever in His grace!!!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for sending your son Jesus to die for me while I was still a sinner. Motivate me by your love to love others, to worship you, and to learn from you through your Word. Amen.

DEVOTION: Exodus 19:2-8 English Standard Version (ESV)

²They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, ³while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: ⁴'You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. ⁵Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; ⁶and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel."

⁷So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. ⁸All the people answered together and said, "All that the Lord has spoken we will do." And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

What a wonderful scene this is, isn't it? God and the people are making their covenant with each other. God says, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples…." The people respond, "All that the Lord has spoken we will do." Sounds great, right?

It sounds great, but the only problem is the people lied. There was no way they were going to keep the covenant. First of all, they didn't know what the word "all" meant. Secondly, they weren't capable of it, because they were sinful human beings.

We should've learned the lesson by now, but we haven't. We still hear the law and say, "All that the Lord has commanded I will do." We think we have it all together enough to get the job done and keep the old covenant. We aren't and we can't.

That's why God made a new covenant with us, one that we couldn't break, because it all depends on him. It's his promise to us. All we do is receive the blessings of that promise. The promise off the Messiah, along with all of God's other promises, have been kept! God loved us so much that he didn't let us flounder under the old covenant. Instead, when the Israelites broke that promise, they were taken into captivity, but God didn't leave them there alone. He went with them, and he eventually brought them out of it.

He does the same for you. When you break God's law, you must suffer the earthly consequences, but God goes with you even in your tough circumstances, and he gets you out and brings you back into a right relationship with him. Rejoice in that today! Rejoice in God's kept promises to you!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for keeping your promises even when I don't, especially your promise to save me and give me eternal life. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ :

What did Jehu do to Baal worship in Israel? (There are three people who answered this question. One all the way from the Czech Republic!)

Not unlike other such dishonest politicians he lied. He told the Baal worshippers that he was going to have a big celebration honoring Baal. But when he had them all together he ordered them killed by the gaurds and officers. He made sure it was only prophets of Baal inside. In this way he destroyed Baal worship in Israel. God was pleased with this and promised his line would continue for four generations. However, Jehu didn't follow God.

He had the Baal worshipers to gather in their temple and had them all killed and their temple destroyed. Don Nolte

The worshipping of Baal was brought to Israel by Kibbles and Bits – aka: Jezebel and Ahab the Arab. After Jehu was anointed king, he had all of the people who worshiped Baal put to death (2 Kings 10:18–26). After that, at Jehu's command, "they demolished the pillar of Baal, and demolished the house of Baal, and made it a latrine to this day. Thus Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel" (verses 27–28). God's goal of ridding the land of Baal worship had been accomplished.

Even so, he ignored the fact that people were still bowing down to golden calves. So, he was not a good guy.
