DEVOTION:  John 10:1-10    English Standard Version (ESV)

I Am the Good Shepherd

10 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

As most of you know, Karin, is one of the biggest dog lovers in the world.  Sometimes I think she loves dogs more than she loves most humans (including me when I get on her bad side).  She treats each dog she has ever had with special care.  You can tell this by the way they respond to her, compared to me, when she walks through the door.

When I walk through the door the dogs don't even bark much less bother to get up off their comfy couch.  They will come and get petted by me after a while, when they know for sure that Karin isn't coming home right behind me, but my love and affection can't even compare to that of Karin's.

The dogs flip out when Karin comes home.  As she gets out of the car and starts to walk up the driveway they are about ready to burst through the window.  Sometimes they get so excited they actually make a little mess on the floor.  They know that she will provide them with every bit of love and support that they need and then some.  They never leave her side the whole time she is home.  As she goes from room to room, they follow her, even scratching up against the bathroom door to get in.

I can just imagine how devastated she would be if one of our dogs would get lost, and how lost that dog would be without the constant care of Karin.  Karin would spare no time or expense in trying to find that dog.  She would not sleep until her beloved pet is found.  I am convinced that she would do everything right up to the point of dying for her dogs.

That's where she and Jesus part ways.  Don't get me wrong, we aren't just pets to Jesus.  Jesus doesn't just feed us food and water and scratch behind our ears when we need it.   We are much more to him.  We are his own beloved children.  He loves us so much that He did the ultimate for us.  He sacrifice Himself. He gave up his own life for us.  Christ showed his true love for us in that while we were still lost and condemned sinners, while we were still His enemies and wanted nothing to do with Him, He died for us!

We can imagine God's love for us in the unconditional love that our pets have for us and we for them, but nothing can compare to the ultimate love that Jesus has for us!  Trust in that love today, tomorrow and forever!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are truly our Good Shepherd; better than any earthly shepherd and even better than the most loving pet lover.  You laid down your life for us while we were still lost in our trespasses and sins.  We did not love you first.  You loved us and gave yourself up for us.  Make us to be ever thankful and to be firsthand witnesses of that great love in everything we say and do.  Amen.

ARMED FORCES SUNDAY DOOR OFFERING NEXT WEEKEND, MAY 13 and 14!!

We will be a collecting a door offering to provide for Bible sticks for our soldiers.  Most armed forces personnel  can't take their phone or computers with them when they are deployed and paper Bibles are too inconvenient.  Bible sticks are just the right size and can fit easily into a pocket and carried wherever they go.  Each Bible stick cost $25 to make and to ship.  There have been over 800,000 of these Bible sticks given to soldiers since it began and thousands of more ready to ship.  They just need the funds to get them out the door.

Here's one testimony from a soldier.  "I am coming back into the arms of the Father who has never forsaken me. This mp3 Bible came right on time, because I have been contemplating suicide."

Please make a note for yourself to bring some money for this very worthy ministry next weekend!!!

Some notes on pastor's sermon video

For some reason, and I don't know what that reason is, my sermons will not play sound on phones.  If you play it on your computer it will work.

I'm working to fix the problem, but it might be awhile.  Until then you'll just have to watch it on a regular computer.

Devotion:  1 Peter 2:19-25English Standard Version (ESV)

19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

The point that Peter is making here is that the reason you suffer even for doing good is to point to Christ, and the reason God allows you to suffer because of your sin is to point to Christ.  In other words, all suffering whether deserved or not, points you and others to Christ who suffered everything for you.

I can tell you from experience that this is completely true.  Suffering for doing good has strengthened my faith and trust in Christ.  And suffering for my sin has caused me to repent and turn from that sin to Christ.  Both of these are good things that God produces in me.  The saying from Scripture is true.  God work all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

You can deny Christ and wallow in your sins and self pity.  You can also deny Christ on the other side and cry, wail, and moan against every injustice against you, because you don't deserve to suffer.  Neither one of these will do you any good.  The best thing you can do is rejoice in your suffering, because it produces perseverance, character, and hope which doesn't disappoint you.  Besides all this, you know that your suffering here on earth is only temporary and cannot be compared to separation from God.

Rejoice today!  Rejoice every day despite your circumstances, because God loves you, cares for you, and is working everything out for your good so that you can be with Him forever in paradise!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for allowing me to suffer temporarily here on earth so you can keep me from eternal suffering apart from you.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Acts 2:42-47  English Standard Version (ESV)

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe[a]came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

If you want to know what the church is supposed to be about, look above.  This is the church.  We are one big family.  When one hurts, we all hurt.  When one is excluding himself or herself we all suffer.  When one person or one family suffers we are all able to gather together around that person or family and take care of them.  When one person rejoices, we all rejoice!!  We attend worship TOGETHER!  We break bread in each other's homes TOGETHER!  We praise God TOGETHER!  We have favor with all the people TOGETHER!!

When this happens, when we are unity like the first church was, good things happen.  The number of those being saved increases daily.  We grow in our own faith as the body of Christ more.  We love more, forgive more, and have a whole lot more peace.

On the other hand, if we fail to see the benefits of the GOD GIVEN church, the church suffers, it decreases, strife happens, ministries decrease, and peace becomes a thing of the past.

I encourage you to look at your own life, especially as it pertains to your church.  How are you treating it?  Is it just a place you go to on Saturday nights or Sunday mornings once in a while?  Is it a place and a people that you only expect to get something out of but never feel the need to contribute to it?  Are you proud of your church or would you be just fine if it went away?  Would you miss it, or would you be thankful that you don't have it to deal with anymore?

My prayer for you is that if you are being faithful in worship and in service to the church that you would continue, and if you have been negligent in these areas, that the Holy Spirit would renew your interest and your fervor for the church and you would come back to the family!

Wherever you are on the spectrum, rejoice that God ha given you St. John's Lutheran Church.  It is a bunch of sinners gathered together by God to hear his Word, receive his sacraments, and grow together as brothers and sisters.  Rejoice that Christ is risen for the church and that he loves us all!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for St. John's.  It is a wonderful body of believers gathered together by you, for you, and through you so that through us you can bring the Gospel to this community and the world and add daily to the numbers of those being saved.  Amen.
