19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
The point that Peter is making here is that the reason you suffer even for doing good is to point to Christ, and the reason God allows you to suffer because of your sin is to point to Christ. In other words, all suffering whether deserved or not, points you and others to Christ who suffered everything for you.
I can tell you from experience that this is completely true. Suffering for doing good has strengthened my faith and trust in Christ. And suffering for my sin has caused me to repent and turn from that sin to Christ. Both of these are good things that God produces in me. The saying from Scripture is true. God work all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
You can deny Christ and wallow in your sins and self pity. You can also deny Christ on the other side and cry, wail, and moan against every injustice against you, because you don't deserve to suffer. Neither one of these will do you any good. The best thing you can do is rejoice in your suffering, because it produces perseverance, character, and hope which doesn't disappoint you. Besides all this, you know that your suffering here on earth is only temporary and cannot be compared to separation from God.
Rejoice today! Rejoice every day despite your circumstances, because God loves you, cares for you, and is working everything out for your good so that you can be with Him forever in paradise!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for allowing me to suffer temporarily here on earth so you can keep me from eternal suffering apart from you. Amen.

For RANDY SWEET AND HIS FAMILY as they mourn the loss of his mother Rose, who passed from death to life.
For CAROL BRAZEE recovering from sinus surgery at home.
For KEN FOSTER recovering from back surgery at home.
For PAT KING, as she is recovering from knee replacement surgery at home.
For MARILYN FOSTER as she prepares for her retirement.
For PATTY SWEET'S MOTHER, Virginia, who is on hospice care and is nearing the end of her life.
For DANIELLE MEINE KRAMER, whose leukemia is back after a brief respite from it. She had it for several years while in high school. (She grew up riding Karin's school bus to school.)
For Mim Dunn's nephew DAVID HAHN who is dealing with severe throat cancer.
For LOIS BOEGER'S MOM, EVELYN TOEDEBUSCH, who has been on hospice care for the last few months and slows down a little more every day, but is doing well.

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe[a]came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
If you want to know what the church is supposed to be about, look above. This is the church. We are one big family. When one hurts, we all hurt. When one is excluding himself or herself we all suffer. When one person or one family suffers we are all able to gather together around that person or family and take care of them. When one person rejoices, we all rejoice!! We attend worship TOGETHER! We break bread in each other's homes TOGETHER! We praise God TOGETHER! We have favor with all the people TOGETHER!!
When this happens, when we are unity like the first church was, good things happen. The number of those being saved increases daily. We grow in our own faith as the body of Christ more. We love more, forgive more, and have a whole lot more peace.
On the other hand, if we fail to see the benefits of the GOD GIVEN church, the church suffers, it decreases, strife happens, ministries decrease, and peace becomes a thing of the past.
I encourage you to look at your own life, especially as it pertains to your church. How are you treating it? Is it just a place you go to on Saturday nights or Sunday mornings once in a while? Is it a place and a people that you only expect to get something out of but never feel the need to contribute to it? Are you proud of your church or would you be just fine if it went away? Would you miss it, or would you be thankful that you don't have it to deal with anymore?
My prayer for you is that if you are being faithful in worship and in service to the church that you would continue, and if you have been negligent in these areas, that the Holy Spirit would renew your interest and your fervor for the church and you would come back to the family!
Wherever you are on the spectrum, rejoice that God ha given you St. John's Lutheran Church. It is a bunch of sinners gathered together by God to hear his Word, receive his sacraments, and grow together as brothers and sisters. Rejoice that Christ is risen for the church and that he loves us all!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for St. John's. It is a wonderful body of believers gathered together by you, for you, and through you so that through us you can bring the Gospel to this community and the world and add daily to the numbers of those being saved. Amen.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[c]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely[d] goodness and mercy[e] shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell[f] in the house of the Lord
forever.
When we are trying to explain the way we'd like things to be regarding our lives or this world, we often use the phrase "In a perfect world…..". If there's one thing I have learned in my 46 years in this world, it is that it this world is far from perfect. In a perfect world everyone would get along. In a perfect world, if someone sinned against someone else, the sinner would immediately ask for forgiveness, and the one who was sinned against would automatically grant that forgiveness.
In a perfect world there would be no sin to begin with. In a perfect world there would be no "valley of the shadow of death", there would be no "evil", and there would be no "enemies".
So because this isn't a perfect world, things don't always work out the way we'd like. There are dangers around every corner that our Lord must guide us through like a good shepherd would keep us on the path with his staff and rod. There are temptations to be overcome, and when we fall into them, as a lamb would fall into a hole, the Lord Jesus, our good shepherd pulls us out of the hole with his mercy and grace. There is food, and shelter and clothing,, but even when we go hungry, or God forbid, starve to death, the Lord Jesus sees us through that shadow of death and brings us to His home where we will live forever.
My one wish is that Jesus would come back and restore His world to the perfect world it once was. Until then we can only trust in our Good Shepherd to lead us, guide us, correct us, feed us, and give us life. TRUST IN HIM FOR HE IS RISEN!!! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, thank you for being our good shepherd through this less than perfect life. Amen.
