14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them:
36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified."
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" 38 And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself." 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, "Save yourselves from this crooked generation." 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
"The promise is for you and your children." With these words Peter brings salvation to all people; no matter the age, gender, or race. The promise is that if you believe, repent, and are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, you WILL receive the Holy Spirit. It's that simple.
If you repent of your sins, that means truly turn from all your obstinate selfish, world centered thoughts, ideas and actions, and turn to the Lord, and if you are washed of those sins you are saved and will live forever with Jesus!
It is no wonder that those who heard this message for the first time were so excited. It is THE most wonderful message you can hear! It is a message that changes hearts and lives forever! It is a message that brings peace and joy! It is a message that saves!
I can only imagine the sea of people standing there waiting to be baptized by one of the apostles. I can imagine the Word of the resurrection spreading like wildfire. It must've been quite a wonderful experience!
I often imagine and dream of St. John's being filled, once again, with people eager to hear the good news and receive Christ. I dream of hundreds of people in Warrenton coming to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins and the reception of the Holy Spirit. I long for the day when I have too much work to do!
Until that day, I ask you to pray for your church, that it would catch fire again! Pray for yourself, that the Holy Spirit would use you to witness to the love, forgiveness, and eternal life of Christ. Pray for our community, especially those who don't know or have the saving work of Christ in their lives, that somehow and some way they would hear and believe! PRAY THAT ST. JOHN'S GETS PACKED SO FULL THAT WE HAVE TO BUILD A BIGGER SANCTUARY! It can happen if the Lord wills. But mostly pray that the Lord works his saving work in you and everyone around you through you.
Let us pray: Lord, grow our church! Make those who are members witnesses to those who are not so that they may hear of your love and fforgiveness and believe and be saved!

116 I love the Lord, because he has heard
my voice and my pleas for mercy.
2 Because he inclined his ear to me,
therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
3 The snares of death encompassed me;
the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
"O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!"
5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
our God is merciful.
6 The Lord preserves the simple;
when I was brought low, he saved me.
7 Return, O my soul, to your rest;
for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
8 For you have delivered my soul from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling;
9 I will walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.
10 I believed, even when[a] I spoke:
"I am greatly afflicted";
11 I said in my alarm,
"All mankind are liars."
12 What shall I render to the Lord
for all his benefits to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
In 1 John it says that we love because he first loves us. In 1 Corinthians 13 it says that if we don't have love we are nothing. Love is the essence of human beings being different than all other creatures, because we were created in His image. That image was lost at the fall when Adam and Eve realized hey were naked and were no longer clothed with Christ, but when we are reborn through the receiving of the Holy Spirit by faith through baptism and through the hearing of the Word we get that image back, we are once again clothed with Christ and have that real love back. "We love, because He first loves us!"
That is what we "render to the Lord". We render to Him our God given love! We render to Him what He first rendered to us by grace! We give to Him what He first gave to us. I just had the opportunity to see my son confirm his faith. At the celebration luncheon I noticed how much he enjoyed getting his gifts. Nothing excites my boy more than getting a gift. A man by the name of Gary Chapman wrote a book called "The Five Love Languages". In it Chapman says that every one of us has a different love language or you might say the way we receive and give love the best and most. I know that Gus's love language is giving and receiving gifts. I just wish he was a little better and GIVING gifts. But then again, I could say the same thing about myself.
None of us is perfect at love, because none of us is perfect. We still have that sinful human nature which is continually in conflict with our spiritual nature. One day we will love perfectly. One day all of our deeds will be done out of the love that we have for Christ! I can't wait! Until that day, I urge you to look to and focus on the love of the Lord Jesus alone. Get your love from Jesus! Find your peace, security, safety, and satisfaction from Jesus!!!
Prayer: Lord God, thank you for loving me so that I can love you back and then love others. Amen.
