DEVOTION:  1 Corinthians 1:10-18New International Version (NIV)

A Church Divided Over Leaders

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas[b]"; still another, "I follow Christ."

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ Crucified Is God's Power and Wisdom

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Church hopping and shopping really bothers me.  What I mean is this, some people only shop for churches based on how much they like the pastor, whether there is a "children's" program (whatever that means), the music, how friendly the people are (which can change from day to day), whether they like the pews/seats or not, and thousands of other things.

Now I'm not saying that you shouldn't find a church in which you are comfortable, but your comfort shouldn't be based on how comfortable your rear end is in the seat.  It shouldn't be based on whether the pastor wears skinny jeans and a hoody or an alb and a stole.

It should be based on whether God's Word is preached and taught in it's truth and purity, whether or not the Sacraments are given according to God's command, and whether or not the people with which you will be members believe in Christ as Lord and Savior.

The pastor may be cool, but if he leaves, does that mean you are not going to be a part of that fellowship anymore?  It would be the same as leaving your in laws if your spouse dies.  You are still part of that family and you still love them and care for them.

Our church's emphasis has been and continues to be that the members of St. John's are more than just separate people that get together for worship once a week.  We are family!  We are all members of one family, God's family!

In the same way, I hate it when other pastors actively seek to tear members of one family away from that family to make them members of their own family.  In the business we call that "sheep stealing".  Pastors and churches should only be in the business of making disciples "family" of people who have no family!  We should be caring for the lost and building up our own families!

Let's do that as Christ's family this year, starting today!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for my church family!  It is truly a family to me.  Help me to love my family every day and to grow it by making disciples as you have called me to do.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:

Who was Tamar?

Today's answer is from Denise Schlesselmann all the way in the Czech Republic

Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah. She was married to his first son Er. But Er made a lot of errors (sins) and was wicked so God put him to death. The second son Onan was supposed to marry Tamar and carry on the family. But he knew that the son would not be his so he made sure Tamar wouldn't get pregnant by wasting his sperm beforehand. So God put him to death too. The third son was next up but Judah thought she was some sort of black widow and promised his third son but never delivered. When Tamar caught on she played a trick on Judah. Thinking she was a prostitute Judah hooked up with her. When Tamar got pregnant Judah was ready to call her out. But Tamar gave him proof that he was the father.  Judah realized he had done the wrong thing and backed off. Her son's name as well as hers is mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew.

The second answer, also a correct one, is from Don Nolte.

Tamar was the daughter of King David and sister of Absalom

DEVOTION:  Isaiah 9:1-4  (NIV)

[a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

The people walking in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
    a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
    and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.
For as in the day of Midian's defeat,
    you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,
    the rod of their oppressor.

The day of the Lord will be a glorious day.  We need to have confidence that, because of what Christ has done on the cross, we will be on the right side of things on that day.  It is all because of God's mercy and grace.  We didn't do anything, nor will we ever do anything to earn that grace.

Until that day we can rejoice as people rejoice in the harvest and as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.  Well….. those analogies may not work as well.  We can rejoice as the Packers fans and Steelers fans rejoiced this past Sunday, or the Cubs fans did back in early November, or as a person does when he wins the lottery.

We can rejoice even more than that, because our rejoicing will last forever.  We never have to stop.  Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  His mercies are new EVERY morning!  Great is His faithfulness.

As long as our rejoicing is in Him and not ourselves it will continue.  As long as we trust in the Lord and not our own understanding we will have lasting joy!

Look forward to the day of Christ's return with certainty, but also rejoice today because He has already taken away the sin of the world!

Let us pray: Lord, we thank you for settting us free from sin forever, for crushing our enemies under your feet, for breaking the rod of the oppression of sin and forgiving us victory!  Help us to look forward to the day of your return, but to also look forward to every day u8ntil then, because you are with us and in us every day.  Amen.

DEVOTION: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving

I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge— God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Are you an encourager?  When you speak with people and in your relationships, are you the one who encourages or are you the one who complains?  Do you speak positively about others or do you put them down?

I confess that I've not always been the best encourager.  I haven't gone out of my way to encourage.  Sometimes I think I am encouraging when really I am trying to guilt someone into doing what they are supposed to do.

For instance here's two different ways to try to get someone to come back to church.

  1. "We haven't seen in you church for a while.  Where've you been?  We miss you.  You know it is your duty as a church member to be in church regularly.
  2. We love you!  We care about you!  How are you doing?  Anything we can pray for?  Please come and be a part of our worship so you can grow in your faith and receive God's gifts!

To which one would you respond more favorably?  The second one, right?  When we act and speak out of love, care, and genuine concern we will have the other person's heart, emotions and well being in mind.  When we truly love others with God's love we will act and speak words of encouragement.

Repent of your lack of encouragement for others.  Run to God for forgiveness!  Then share Christ's love like Paul did in the verses above!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us the ability to encourage others.  Help me to encourage as you give me opportunity.  Amen.
