DEVOTION  Isaiah 7:10-14

¹⁰ Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, ¹¹ "Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights."

¹² But Ahaz said, "I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test."

¹³ Then Isaiah said, "Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also?¹⁴ Therefore the Lord himself will give you^[a] a sign: The virgin^[b] will conceive and give birth to a son, and^[c] will call him Immanuel.

Ahaz was being self righteous.  He sounded good.  "I will not put the Lord to the test" sounds like a good response, but when God tells you to do something, you do it.  You don't try to sound right… God can see right through that. 

 

The "sign" was and is a wonderful thing, but sometimes we miss it, because we, like Ahaz, are too self righteous, too full of ourselves, and too self centered to see it.  We miss out on such a wonderful thing as God's grace and peace, because we are too busy trying to be right, trying to be the best we can be, trying to impress God and others, instead of just resting in His grace. 

Take this lesson from Ahaz.  When Jesus says "Come to me, all you who are labor and burdened and I will give you rest", don't say "Hold on Jesus, first let me prove to you that I am worthy."  Or, "That's Ok Jesus, I got this."  

Say, "Thank you Jesus!  I am a poor miserable sinner and I can't save myself."  Thank you Jesus for your rest!" 

Just do what the Lord says!  Surrender and go to Jesus!  Give up the fight.  Give up the bitterness.  Give up the anger and resentment.  Give up the struggle.  The struggle may be real, but it ain't worth fighting.  This Christmas, do what God says, REST in Him. 

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your "sign".  Thank you that you have given Him to me, even when I don't deserve it.  Thank you for bringing me back to life and giving me your Spirit.  THANK YOU!  Amen.

DEVOTION: Psalm 110:1-4

Of David. A psalm.

¹ The Lord says to my lord:^[a]

"Sit at my right hand
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet."

² The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying,
    "Rule in the midst of your enemies!"
³ Your troops will be willing
    on your day of battle.
Arrayed in holy splendor,
    your young men will come to you
    like dew from the morning's womb.^[b]

⁴ The Lord has sworn
    and will not change his mind:
"You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek."

 

 

Who is David talking about in this passage when he says "The Lord says to my Lord"?  David had no "lord" as far as this earth went.  He was the most powerful man in the world.  No one ruled over him.  He, indeed, ruled over everyone.  Yet, he knew who that there was a "Lord" over him, namely God Himself.  From a young boy on, David knew that no one could compare or even come close.  He knew that if it wasn't for God's will, he would have never become king. 

 

So, when David says, "The Lord says to my Lord…." It sounds strange at first and tell you realize who "the Lord" is and who "my Lord" is.  We are talking the Father and Jesus here folks!  David is talking about Jesus in the Old Testament.  Isn't that fantastic?  It is veiled to be sure, but there is no mistaking it. 

 

And it is fitting that we use this Psalm on Christmas Eve, because at Christmas as well as at the crucifixion and resurrection, the Lord put all our enemies under his feet.  In that lowly birth, when Jesus was laid in the manger, "my Lord" defeated the devil! 

 

Can you imagine the groans and wails from hell as Satan saw the Son of God become incarnate begin to do what He came to do?  I'm sure he, along with all his demons, didn't see it coming. 

 

Rejoice today that your Lord Jesus sits, once again, at God's right hand until the day when the final battle will have been won and this earth and life itself will be transformed to life eternal!  Rejoice that He has put all your enemies under Christ's feet and the last one to be destroyed is death.  That destruction is sure!  Alleluia!

 

Prayer:  Than you for your salvation my Lord!  And thank you Lord for ruling over me.  Amen.

The church parking lot is still mostly covered with ice, and there's no way, as cold as it is, and as much ice as there is, that I can get it all salted and have it melt.

Worship tomorrow

I am still planning on having worship tomorrow. 

There is someone coming out to salt the parking lot, however, if the parking lot is still iced over I'll let everyone know by 7am. 

If you're a worship worker (usher, projectionist, greeter, elder) don't think that you have to be there. We'll make due without you.

Make sure you listen to KFUO 850 AM, www. kfuoam.org or the Lutheran Hour wherever you can find it if you stay home!

Other than that, use your own best judgment.

Please pray for my dad, Roger Klaustermeier,  as he's dealing with an infection in his leg and with lots of circulation and blood vessel problems in both legs right now.

Hi all,

I hope this email finds you well. I am sending you this note because each of you have been an integral part in the strengthening and encouragement of my faith at work. I truly believe that you are a bright light in this company as you have individually shown me how to stay true to the Word in my actions and words at work. I am also sending you this note because I trust that where two or three gather in His name, there He is in the midst of them. That said, this note is an invitation to pray with me for my trip home.

 

As you all know, I came from Indonesia to study MIS at Baylor University. Since then, I have had the privilege of working here at P66 with welcoming coworkers such as yourselves, and I also have the great blessing to fly home every Christmas. Unfortunately, we have been facing religious issues in Indonesia. To give you a small picture of what has been happening, below is a short timeline.

·        Nov 13 – A radical Muslim, who was later on found to be part of ISIS, bombed a Catholic church and Buddhist temple, killing four civilians.

·        Dec 2 – Millions of Muslims took to my city's downtown to protest against our first Christian governor.

·        Dec 6 – A church's Christmas service was interrupted and shut down by Muslim officials for celebrating a Christian holiday in a public area.

·        Dec 13 – Yesterday, our governor was put on trial for blaspheming Islam, pressured by the Dec 2 Muslim protests.

 

Although my family and I have been a strong Christian, our country is still broken and divided. This December, we have decided to travel outside of Indonesia over Christmas just in case any other protests break out. I have also let my supervisor know in case I'm prevented from coming home in time come January (as international airports can potentially be closed when protests occur). So far, I have yet to read any news regarding American citizens being restricted from coming into the country.

 

I don't believe that anything worst will continue to happen in Indonesia as the year comes to an end other than the occasional terrorist threats. Just in case, I have prepared a list of prayer points for us to stand against any further attacks. Please join me in praying for

1.      Safety – for my travels to and from Indonesia, as well as my family during the holidays and the rest of the year.

2.      Strength and courage – for believers in Indonesia as we are faced with adversaries, and for us to seek God when we are most fearful.

3.      Unity – amongst Indonesians of all religions.

4.      Justice – over our governor and all who support him in truth.

5.      Revelation – of God's love in my country, my people, my government, my neighborhoods.

 

I know that with everything happening, God is on the move in Indonesia because with great victory comes many challenges. I really appreciate you joining me in support and love for my country. I pray that you also have a safe and happy holidays this December. J

 

PS. I wasn't sure whether I should send our big prayer group this note for fear of sounding too "political", so I leave it to you to share this prayer with anyone else you think would like to join. Thank you again!

DEVOTION: Matthew 1:18-25

Matthew 1:18-25 (ESV)

The Birth of Jesus Christ

¹⁸ Now the birth of Jesus Christ^[a] took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed^[b] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. ¹⁹ And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. ²⁰ But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. ²¹ She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." ²² All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

²³ "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
    and they shall call his name Immanuel"

(which means, God with us). ²⁴ When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, ²⁵ but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

 

Most people think of God as a far away being looking down on the world, sometimes laughing, sometimes frowning, sometimes shaking his head in disgust, and the rest of the time judging.  Too often we fail to realize Immanuel.  How often, as you are going through your day, realize that God is with us?  Even though Jesus ascended into heaven, he promised us "Behold, I am with you always to the very end of the age."  In many other various ways he has promised to always be WITH us and to live IN us. 

 

He is not far off.  He is not some mystical thought throughout the day.  He was with us in body, and at Pentecost he sent His Spirit to live in us and in the world.  He is most definitely WITH us! 

 

First, this should give us fear.  We shouldn't ever be willing to do in secret what we wouldn't doin public.  We shouldn't ever be willing to do what God forbids.  God sees it all.  He is there for it all. 

 

Secondly, His presence should give us peace, because we can know that, in spite of seeing every one of our failures, He still loves us and He already died and rose for us.  In the same way that we know that a loving parent isn't going to destroy, disown, or forsake his or her children because of sin, so we can know that, because that the Son was already forsaken on our behalf, we will not be forsaken. 

 

Praise the Lord for His faithfulness to us!  Praise the Lord for His eternal peace!  Praise the Lord for His love and forgiveness!  Let us never take it for granted!  Let us never fail to realize IMMANUEL!!

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to always, every day, realize that you are with us so that we may not sin, but when we do, you don't forsake us, but forgive us.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Romans 1:1-7 (ESV)

"Greeting"

1 Paul, a servant^[a] of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, ² which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, ³ concerning his Son, who was descended from David^[b] according to the flesh ⁴ and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, ⁵ through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, ⁶ including you who are called  to belong to Jesus Christ,⁷ To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:  Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

 

How do you greet people?  "Hey!"  "Hello." "How are you?"  Have you ever considered greeting people the way Paul does here?  He puts the emphasis, almost immediately after introducing himself, on Christ.  He doesn't waste any time.  He says that he was called to be a sent one for the good news (Gospel) of God. 

 

Then he simply gives them that grace with a greeting of "Grace to you and peace from god our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."  I usually use this or something like this at the beginning of the sermon.  It is usually as most people are getting settled in for their naps and straightening out whatever their kids need to stay quiet, so I'm sure many people don't pay much attention to it.  Frankly, I don't pay much attention either.  We take that greeting, and in fact, we take God's grace itself, for granted, don't we?  The few times we acknowledge his grace outside off worship and devotions is when we escape some sort of harmful thing, or when we are so in dire straits, spiritually and physically, that we have no other choice but to surrender and rely on God. 

 

When we truly hear this greeting with open ears during times of conflict or struggle, it has a different meaning to us.  We understand what that peace truly is, we can actually understand and fathom the reality of his grace on our lives. 

 

My prayer for you today is that you hear Paul's greeting "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ", in a  refreshing and new at today and that it has fuller meaning for you. 

 

Lord, renew Your grace and peace in me today so that it may overflow from me to others and I can greet every one around me with peace and grace.  Amen.

For BETTY TAMELER who is recovering at home from surgery and is doing well.  She won't find out the results of her surgery till January.

 

For MIKE PUCKETT who is recovering from extensive lung surgery and is recovering at University Hospital in Columbia.

 

For DAVE CALLIES who is recovering from hand surgery

 

For PAT GERDING, Vickie McRae's brother in law, who is paralyzed, but is recovering at a nursing home.
