DEVOTION: Psalm 146

"Put Not Your Trust in Princes"

146 Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
    I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Put not your trust in princes,
    in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
    on that very day his plans perish.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the Lord his God,
who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;
    who executes justice for the oppressed,
    who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;
    the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
    the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the sojourners;
    he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
    but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 The Lord will reign forever,
    your God, O Zion, to all generations.
Praise the Lord!

How much trust do you have in President Obama?  How much trust do you have in President elect Trump?   How much do you trust your elected officials at all?

If you said "none" or "very little" you are in good company.  Most people don't trust their government.  Why?  Because the government is full of people with power, and power, no matter how much or how little, too often corrupts people.  Also, the person in office might not hold the same ideals or vision as you, so you don't trust that person because you don't agree with him or her.

We put way too much trust in our elected officials to make everything better, or in Trump's words "make American great again".  I have some bad news for you if you trust in Trump.  He isn't going to be able to do many of the things he promised.  I know that may come as a shock, but he is only human after all.  Obama didn't save the world or save America either.

David, a king himself, says very plainly,  "Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation."  Don't do it!  Don't put too much trust in the president, the school board, the mayor, the church council, or any other man.  Put your trust in God alone to save you!  Trust in Christ for your salvation, both eternal and earthly.

If we think that an elected official can save us, we will be extremely disappointed.  If we think that some sort of financial plan, or foreign policy is going to fix everything we are in for a lot of heartache.  Instead, if we seek the Lord where he may be found, and seek his will in all circumstances, and if we trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, we will have peace.

Have peace, rest, trust and salvation in Jesus alone today!!!

Let us pray: Lord, help me to place my trust in your certainty and not in the continually changing "leaders" of this world.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Matthew 3:1-12 (ESV)

"John the Baptist Prepares the Way"

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."[a] For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

"The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
'Prepare[b] the way of the Lord;
    make his paths straight.'"

Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

John the Baptist came to prepare the way for the Lord Jesus to come into the hearts and minds of his people.  You would think he would do that by buttering them up, by saying things that would make them more receptive to Jesus, nice things, happy things, and all sorts of good stuff.

What does he say?  He calls them to repentance,to turn away from their sin, so that they can follow Jesus.  He calls the Pharisees a "brood of vipers".  He doesn't mix words.  He doesn't make it sound nice.  He gives them the hardcore law.  He speaks the conviction and judgment of their sin.

If you want to draw a crowd, that's not usually the way to do it.  Yet, it wasn't a crowd that was drawn simply by a fiery preacher or a wondrous sight to see in the wilderness.  It was a crowd that was drawn out to the wilderness by the Holy Spirit.  At just the right time, when the people were ready to hear, the Lord sent them out to John the Baptist to hear what they NEEDED to hear, not what they wanted, but what they NEEDED.

There are a lot of churches, clubs, organizations, and self help books that will tell you what you want to hear.  They draw crowds of thousands and thousands.  Yet, they are filled with hot air.  They aren't preparing the way of the Lord, nor are they preaching the forgiveness of the Lord throughthe mercy and grace of Christ.  They're just telling you "good" things that will fill with the false hope that you can make yourself better.

I want to urge and plead with you to listen to the words of John the Baptist today.  "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"  That kingdom of heaven is JESUS and he is standing at the door and knocking.  Repent of yoru sin and turn to Him so he can come in!

Prayer: Lord, make us hear what we need to hear so that we might rely on your grace alone andnot our own understanding or strength.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Romans 15:4-13  (ESV)

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

"Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
    and sing to your name."

10 And again it is said,

"Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people."

11 And again,

"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
    and let all the peoples extol him."

12 And again Isaiah says,

"The root of Jesse will come,
    even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
in him will the Gentiles hope."

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

What a positive message this morning.  You want endurance?  Ask the God of endurance!  You want hope? Ask the God of hope!  You want joy?  Ask the God of joy!

Why do we search for these things outside of the realm of God?  Why do we fight, and scrtach, and claw, and worry, when all the time, God tells us to come to him for rest and present ourr equests to him, and go, go, go to Him?

It my prayer for you that, whatever you are dealing with, you GO TO GOD with it.  Presnet it to Him and then have your ears open to His Word to hear what he has to say to you!.  He will tell you to face your sin head on and repent!  He will tell you to go and be reconciled.  He will tell yout o love your neighbor as He loves you!  And so much more!

Let us pray:  Thank you for the encouragement, love grace, mercy, peace, and joy you have given me today God!  GIve me more!  Amen.

DEVOTION: Isaiah 11:1-10 (ESV)

"The Righteous Reign of the Branch"

11 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
    and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
    and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
    and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

10 In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

How we judge people and how Christ judges them are two different things.  We judge by what we see and hear.  Christ judges by what he knows is in the heart.  We judge in selfishness, bitterness, anger, and too often without forgiveness.  He judges in righteousness for everyone whether they believe in him or not, and in complete and total forgiveness for those who trust in him.

It is a most wonderful thing to realize that our Lord Jesus doesn't just judge by what he sees and hears, because if he did we would all be lost and condemned forever.  Our actions, thoughts, and words convict us daily.  Instead of judging us as our sins deserve, he looks into the heart, and for those who have been baptized, for those who believe in the salvation that he has won, he sees himself.  He sees a pure and perfect saint who has been washed cleaned and who is continually forgiven.

On the day Christ returns all that Isaiah proclaimed in these verses will happen.  Until that day, know that you've already been judged and been found not guilty by virtue of the judge who is also your Lord and Savior.  Have peace in him today!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, bless us more and more with the sure knowledge that you judge according to your own righteousness and that we have been redeemed by your precious blood.  Amen.
