DEVOTION:  Amos 8:4-7   (ESV)

Hear this, you who trample on the needy
and bring the poor of the land to an end,
saying, "When will the new moon be over,
    that we may sell grain?
And the Sabbath,
that we may offer wheat for sale,
that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great
and deal deceitfully with false balances,
that we may buy the poor for silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals
and sell the chaff of the wheat?"

The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob:
"Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.

This passage shines a big spotlight on those who are just trying to make a quick buck and those who are only about themselves and making money for themselves.  It is deplorable to God.  He can't stand it.  It disgusts him.

Woe to the person who is only about the money.  He will come to a grave end if he does not repent.  Very simply put, for those of you who still don't get it, don't make your life all about money.  It ain't worth it.

Make your life about caring for people and loving people.  Make your life about caring for the poor and those who are less fortunate than you.  Use your wealth and your abilities to bring Jesus to the world and the world to Jesus.

There is no gospel, no good news in this passage for the dishonest manager and those who deal falsely.  It is all bad news.

Yet, the purpose for this message from God is so that those who are doing these things see their sinfulness and repent.  That is what the law does.  It causes us to see our sinfulness so that we have no other choice but to turn from our sin and turn to Christ.

If you are a sinner, and all of you reading this today are, repent!  Turn from your sin and live forever with Jesus!

Prayer: Lord, if I have been dishonest in my dealing with people show me my sin and make me repent so that I may live in peace with a clear heart and conscience.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 113
"Who Is like the Lord Our God?"

113 Praise the Lord!
Praise, O servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord!

Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore!
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
the name of the Lord is to be praised!

The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens!
Who is like the Lord our God,
    who is seated on high,
who looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the Lord!

In this psalm we see David extolling the limitless power and love of God.  There is nowhere he won't be.  There is no one he won't see.  There is nothing he can't do, even making the poor sit with princes and the barren woman have children.

You may want to put limits on God.  Your soul might even mistakenly think that God can't help you.  Don't put limits on God's help.  Don't put restrictions on what God can do.  He can do whatever he wants.  HE'S GOD!

That doesn't mean he will do everything you want.  He may not heal your cancer because he wants you to grow through it, and he wants you to ultimately be with him in paradise, and he will use that cancer to get you there.  He may not want you to have a million dollars, because he knows it will ruin your faith.  He may not want you to have that new and "better" relationship, but want you to be reconciled in the relationship you already have.

He will and already has sent his Son to die so that you may be saved from eternal death because of your sin.  He will care for your so0ul, by giving you His Word and Sacraments.  He will give you the power to love and forgive those around you.  He will give you the strength to make it through tough times.  He will bring you to eternal life.

Trust in God's power to do for you what you NEED.  Trust in god's power to redeem you, save you, give you that peace that passes all understanding, and bring you to Himself.  Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.

Prayer:  Lord, thank you for your limitless power.  Help me to trust in it and put my whole life in your hands.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: Who was Zadok and why are his descendants so important?

An answer all the way from the Czech Republic!!  Thanks Denise!
Zadok was a priest. According to Ezekiel's temple vision from God, only the descendants (sons) of Zadok could draw near to the Lord to minister before him. This is because Zadok didn't stray from God when the others did. The descendants of the other priests were not to come near the Lord, serve as priests or be near his holy things. They only had charge of the duties of the temple and the work that was done in it. The priests and Levites that were descendants of Zadok could stand before the Lord and offer sacrifices. They alone were  to enter His sanctuary, come before His table and perform His service.

Salt and Light
Taken from the Septembr 2016 LCMS Rural & Small Town Mission Newsletter
Contributed by Rev. Todd Kollbaum, Director, LCMS Rural & Small Town Mission

In his "Theological Statement for Mission in the 21st Century," LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew Harrison states, "Where the Holy Trinity is present via the Gospel and received in faith, there cannot but be Witness (martyria), Mercy (diakonia), Life Together (koinonia). These three reflect God's very being as Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier, and they encompass His holy and gracious will for all in Christ Jesus — namely that all come to believe in and bear witness to Christ, reflect divine compassion and live together in forgiveness, love and joy in the Church (AC I). Missouri District Annual Report on the Way

Last December was the final printed version of The Voice of Missouri. We have tried to expand our electronic communications through the weekly versions of The Voice and President Hagan's Encourage. However, we determined that we wanted to provide the congregations and their members with an Annual Report summarizing the work of the Missouri District in the last year. This report will be sent to those who formerly received The Voice of Missouri. It will also be available online. Please watch for your copy of the Annual Report in the coming days. We hope that it will provide you with helpful information about the district's critical targets and finances, but also inspiring stories about missions across the district and plans for the future."
