St. John's members have been asked by leaders of the Big Red Boosters to help with concessions at the home football game on Friday, August 26. 
 
When? 5:45-9pm
 
Where? Warrenton Football Concession stand
 
What?  Selling all sorts of concession stand food and drink.  (No previous experience necessary)
 
Who?  Any member of St. John's (Don't have to have a kid at the high school to help)

Two prayer requests

 1. Pray for SANDRA PERRICONE'S SISTER KAREN PRATT who is having heart issues and will see a specialist on Monday.
 
2. For the FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND COWORKERS OF TONI MAUCH'S BOSS, as he passed away last week.  He had a double lung transplant and was doing well with it until be developed a fungal infection which overtook him.

"Not Peace, but Division"
⁴⁹ "I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! ⁵⁰ I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! ⁵¹ Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. ⁵² For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. ⁵³ They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
 
"Interpreting the Time"
⁵⁴ He also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, 'A shower is coming.' And so it happens. ⁵⁵ And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat,' and it happens. ⁵⁶ You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
 
 
Wow!  It sure doesn't sound like a positive message from Jesus today does it?  He came to bring division?  That doesn't sound right. 
 
But here's the deal.  When it comes to Jesus there's no middle ground.  You can't just believe in him a little bit and still carry on with the rest of life as if he doesn't exist.  Think about how it would have been during Jesus' day.  Christianity was new.  So there would be a household full of Jews.  When Jesus came along some in the household would believe in Him and others wouldn't.  (By the way, this still happens today in Jewish households.)  Once you became a believer in Jesus, you were no longer accepted in the household.  You were outcast. 
 
The same seems to be happening more and more as Christians take stands on God's Word and as God's Word becomes less and less popular with so many in out culture.  We find ourselves as outcasts as we speak out against things that God has called sin, including abortion and many different sexual sins that the world calls good and ok.  As we are continually being pressed to disavow our Christianity there are many homes, families, and even churches that are being torn apart. 
 
While we must speak the truth in love, God never calls us to water down the truth or deny the truth, as hard as it might be.  We stand firm on God's Word, despite the circumstances and the hardships. 
 
My prayer for you is that you stand firm on God's Word and that you hold tight to Him.  As people were beginning to turn away from Jesus as he said many of these hard things, Jesus asked his disciples, "Are you going to leave too?"  Peter answered, "Lord, to whom shall we go?  You alone have the words of eternal life." 
 
We have many ways we can turn.  All but one of them lead to confusion, trouble and death.  Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life!  Live in Him alone!  Trust in Him alone.  It won't be easy, but in the end it will bring you to eternal life. 
 
Prayer: When the way gets hard, Lord, help me to stay on the straight path and not veer off the road, for you, and you alone, are the w ay of eternal life.  Amen.

Contrary to what all those health nuts out there are telling you – and yes, I'm looking at you, Pastor K! – Mo-ab is not a new exercise routine. I know, I know. It sounds like it might be. But trust me on this. You will NOT get bigger and better abs with this. No matter how many times you say it. I've tried, and it doesn't work. Not even when I've added red wine to the mix.

But again, with several answers. So here are some:

1)  The county seat and largest city in Grand County, Utah. It attracts a large number of tourists who come to visit the nearby Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

2)  The land of Moab (Jeremiah 48:24) was located on the east of Jordan and the Dead Sea, and south of Arnon (Numbers 21:13, 21:26). BUILDING PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING TONIGHT AT 7PM!!
 
Here's some things to know for the meeting:

1.  Kent Jacobsmeyer has  2 master plans to present and discuss the potential course of action and timeline in moving forward. 
 
2. Elmer Wind will not be attending Thursday's meeting, I believe we need to make some decisions independent of his guidance to make sure we are going in the correct direction. 

 

3. Kent is  excited about the master plans that we have been given to look at, if we need an additional meeting with Elmer he would be available next week.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT KELSEY AND OUR DCE PROGRAM

The DCE fund was to be a three year fund which was to transition to the general budget at the end of three years. Unfortunately neither the DCE fund nor the general budget have kept pace with what is needed. 

In November we will be at the end of the three years.  The DCE Fund has dwindled down to near nothing and will be just about gone in December,  and the regular offerings have not increased enough to increase the regular budget.  

To make it clear, there is not enough money in the budget to pay Kelsey.

 

Where does this money come from? IT COMES FROM THE MEMBERS OF ST.JOHN'S WHO GIVE THEIR OFFERINGS.  It is up to you AS MEMBERS OF ST.JOHN'S  to give as you are able so that our budget can go up enough to be able to support her.

GUN CLUB OUTING COMING UP THIS SATURDAY, AUGUST 13!!!

 Our next Gun Club outing will be at Whetstone Creek Conservation Area Gun Range on Saturday, August 13, from 9am-Noon.  You can either bring your own guns and ammo to shoot at the range or we will have a whole range set up for a special "fam fire" (armed forces code for familiarization fire) on a separate range for those who don't own a gun but would like to learn to shoot and learn about various types of firearms.  Paul Brockfeld and others will have several different firearms and ammo to use for $20 per person.  Please sign up on the sheet on the counter in the narthex so we know how many are coming and who is or is not bringing their own guns and ammo. 
 
Directions to the range: DO NOT follow the signs to Whetstone Creek.  If you follow the signs, you will not go to the firearms range.  From Warrenton take I-70 to the Williamsburg exit.  At the top of the ramp turn right and head north into Williamsburg.  At the first stop sign go straight (Sign will tell you to turn left to go to Whetstone Creek CA - do not turn left).  At the second stop sign go straight.  Road will turn to gravel as you leave Williamsburg.  Once road turns to gravel it is approximately 2.3 miles to the range on the right.  Parking lot is before the range.

DEVOTION: Jeremiah 23:16-29 (ESV)

¹⁶ Thus says the Lord of hosts: "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. ¹⁷ They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, 'It shall be well with you'; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, 'No disaster shall come upon you.'"

¹⁸ For who among them has stood in the council of the Lord
    to see and to hear his word,
    or who has paid attention to his word and listened?

Let's face it, we don't like bad news.  We don't like to hear, nor do we like to give it.  It usually causes us stress, pain, and grief.  At the same time, bad news needs to be told. 

 

Think of the family who lost a loved one in the war.  What if no one ever told them that their loved one had died.  They'd just be left wondering.  What happens when you sin against someone, but instead of that person coming to you and telling you your sin, they give you the silent treatment or the cold shoulder, or worse yet, they leave all together?  Is that better? 

 

Or, on a lighter note, what if you went to the bathroom in the morning and got some toilet paper stuck to your shoe, but no one told you, and you walked around all day seeing tons of people?  Wouldn't you have wanted the first person who saw you to tell you that you had toilet paper on your shoe, as embarrassing as it may have been?

 

Certainly, it is much more pleasant to hear good news.  It is much nicer when you hear things that are pleasant for your ears.  But will those pleasant things really help you when you have something going wrong in your life or need to be confronted with your sin so that you can repent? 

 

There were many false prophets who spoke lies to the people telling them that everything was ok when it wasn't, and the nation crumbled.  Jeremiah was speaking the truth as God gave it to him, and they hated him, exiled him, and several times threw him in prison. 

 

You may not be liked when you speak the truth in love, but your conscience will be clear and you will know that you love the person you spoke to.  Even better, when you speak the truth of God's love, it never returns to him void.  It always does the purpose for which he sent it from your mouth. 

 

So we are called as Christians to speak the truth!  It is not acting in love when we hide the necessary truth from a person.  It is to no good end when we keep from speaking the truth in love to those who need to hear it. 

 

Stand firm and steadfast in God's Word, even when it's not popular.  Live in the truth of God's Word!

 

Prayer: Lord, help me to hear your word of truth when I need it, even when it hurts, and help me to speak your word of truth with love to those who need it, even when it is uncomfortable, awkward, or painful, so Your truth may be heard. Amen.

Here's some things to know for the meeting:

1.  Kent Jacobsmeyer has  2 master plans to present and discuss the potential course of action and timeline in moving forward. 
 
2. Elmer Wind will not be attending Thursday's meeting, I believe we need to make some decisions independent of his guidance to make sure we are going in the correct direction. 

 

3. Kent is  excited about the master plans that we have been given to look at, if we need an additional meeting with Elmer he would be available next week. 

 

4. Here is the basic timeline if this works;

·         Meeting this Thursday night, present plans, if we are in agreement with the direction we need to make recommendations, and get it on the agenda for the voter's meeting.

 

·         Once the church accepts the master plan, we would hand the responsibility over to the building committee to start looking for an architect to work with.

DEVOTION: Psalm 119:81-88 (ESV)
"Kaph"  (Note: In Psalm 119 every section starts with another letter of the alphabet.  "Kaph" is the equivalent to our letter K.)

⁸¹ My soul longs for your salvation;
    I hope in your word.
⁸² My eyes long for your promise;
    I ask, "When will you comfort me?"
⁸³ For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke,
    yet I have not forgotten your statutes.
⁸⁴ How long must your servant endure?^[a]
    When will you judge those who persecute me?
⁸⁵ The insolent have dug pitfalls for me;
    they do not live according to your law.
⁸⁶ All your commandments are sure;
    they persecute me with falsehood; help me!

I love the imagery that says "I have become like a wineskin in the smoke."  What does that look like: old, leathery, tired, hard, worn out?  It isn't good. 

 

If you've lived long enough on this earth there will be times in your life that will plain wear you out.  You will go through struggles in relationships that will cause you sleepless nights and lots of worry.  Your kids will give you gray hair.  Your own sin will cause you grief and anguish.  You will indeed become like a wineskin in the smoke. 

 

It is in the middle of all this that we "long" for His salvation and "long" for his promise.  Have you ever wondered why most churches are filled with older people?  It is because in their wisdom, which they have received from living a long life and going through all sorts of troubles, they see the need for Jesus.  They know the purpose of worship and the fellowship of the saints.  They see the joy of God's salvation.  When you're younger and haven't gone through the stuff that older folks have you don't see the need. 

 

My prayer for you is that you see the purpose and the need for worship before you truly need it like it looks like David needs it today in your Psalm.  I pray that you find the purpose for worship and for fellowship in the church while you still have joy and peace so that you don't desire it without having it, because you've been neglecting it. 

 

Don't just "long" for his salvation and his promise.  Know that you have it!  Know that it is yours in Christ Jesus!  Know that he loves you with an everlasting love!  And know that you'll always find it and receive it in the worship and fellowship of the saints at St. John's!

 

Prayer: Lord, bless us as we long for the fulfillment of your salvation and wait for your promise fulfilled when you come again to judge the living and the dead and restore your kingdom fully.  Until then, give us patience and peace in knowing that we already have all of your gifts in Christ Jesus.  Amen.

GUN CLUB OUTING COMING UP SATURDAY, AUGUST 13!!!

 Our next Gun Club outing will be at Whetstone Creek Conservation Area Gun Range on Saturday, August 13, from 9am-Noon.  You can either bring your own guns and ammo to shoot at the range or we will have a whole range set up for a special "fam fire" (armed forces code for familiarization fire) on a separate range for those who don't own a gun but would like to learn to shoot and learn about various types of firearms.  Paul Brockfeld and others will have several different firearms and ammo to use for $20 per person.  Please sign up on the sheet on the counter in the narthex so we know how many are coming and who is or is not bringing their own guns and ammo. 
 
Directions to the range: DO NOT follow the signs to Whetstone Creek.  If you follow the signs, you will not go to the firearms range.  From Warrenton take I-70 to the Williamsburg exit.  At the top of the ramp turn right and head north into Williamsburg.  At the first stop sign go straight (Sign will tell you to turn left to go to Whetstone Creek CA - do not turn left).  At the second stop sign go straight.  Road will turn to gravel as you leave Williamsburg.  Once road turns to gravel it is approximately 2.3 miles to the range on the right.  Parking lot is before the range.

For LENA OWENS as she recovers from knee replacement surgery at home.

 

For BOB RUHL, who is at Barnes Hospital recovering from sepsis due to a perforated bowel, and also recovering from a heart attack.  He is on the mend.  

 

For DON BRAZEE as he is in failing health and is now confined to a bed on hospice care.   

 

For the HARGROVE FAMILY as they mourn the loss of Dave's dad Charles.  (His memorial visitation and service will be Saturday, August 20, 1-3pm.

 

For LAW ENFORCEMENT EVERYWHERE, that we would keep the 4th commandment and honor those who serve and protect us from evildoers. 

 

For BRIAN TAMPOW, a friend of Steve and Toni Mauch, who has an inoperable tumor near his carotid artery and will need to go through extensive chemo and radiation treatment.

Backpack Blessings this weekend!

 Bring your kids, grandkids and teachers to church this weekend so that they can be prayed for and encouraged as they begin the school year.  They will receive an encouraging card to hand on their backpack, along with a sheet of cards with Bible verses on them to stick in their backpack every day or week as you choose.

"Do Not Be Anxious"
²² And he said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. ²³ For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. ²⁴ Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! ²⁵ And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?^{[a] 26} If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? ²⁷ Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,^[b] yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ²⁸ But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! ²⁹ And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. ³⁰ For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. ³¹ Instead, seek his^[c] kingdom, and these things will be added to you.

"You Must Be Ready"
³⁵ "Stay dressed for action^[d] and keep your lamps burning, ³⁶ and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. ³⁷ Blessed are those servants^[e] whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. ³⁸ If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! ³⁹ But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he^[f] would not have left his house to be broken into. ⁴⁰ You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."
 
 
 
I know quite a few people who have severe anxiety disorder.  It is a disease of the brain that causes panic attacks, depression, and a myriad other troubles.  It is an uncontrollable defect in the brain caused by chemical imbalances.  It usually isn't rooted in any particular circumstance.  In other words, circumstances can be fine and there be no imminent danger or anything wrong, but the person with anxiety disorder, because of their chemical imbalances, sees things differently. 
 
There is no "calming down".  There is no "just pray more".  There is no "just stop it", take a deep breath, etc. when it comes to anxiety.  Believe me, I've learned the hard way by trying to "counsel" people who have it. 
 
The "worry" that Jesus is talking about in the passage above is not the same as those who have anxiety disorder.  The worry Jesus is talking about is, in essence, sin against the first commandment as a person puts more emphasis on and relies more on the gifts instead of the giver.  It is the same thing as when we hear him say "The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil." 
 
In this one sin there are two extremes. There are those who have it good.  They're comfortable.  They're full.  They have all they need, and so they begin to be dependent upon the stuff as they use it for their comfort, satisfaction, and safety.  On the other hand there are those who are lacking, the poor, and those who are going without.  In them we find those who are constantly searching and looking for more wealth.  You'll find them stealing.  You'll find them at the convenience store buy hundreds of dollars worth of lottery tickets.  You'll find them searching for comfort, satisfaction, and safety everywhere but where it truly may be found. 
 
You don't have to have anxiety disorder to "worry" about your life.  I know a lot of people who are completely mentally stable and yet commit this sin every day.  I must confess that I am one of them. 
 
Jesus is calling us to repentance with his message today.  He wants us to quit relying on the "economy" and start relying on him for our peace, satisfaction, security, safety, and comfort.  Let's repent of our anxiousness because of our want, and rest in God's eternal mercy and grace!
 
Prayer: Lord, I confess that I have been anxious about my life, what I will eat, wear and do.  Help me to rest my weary and heavy burdened mind and heart in you.  Amen.
