"God's Covenant with Abram"
15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: "Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." 2 But Abram said, "O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue[a] childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3 And Abram said, "Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir." 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: "This man shall not be your heir; your very own son[b] shall be your heir." 5 And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
I'm not sure why we question God's promises as much as we do. I take that back... I am sure. We question God, because we judge his promises according to our experiences with people. People, our children, our spouse, our boss, our coworkers, our pastor.... every human being will let us down. Even we, ourselves, will mess up and fail to keep all the promises we have made.
Abram was doing the same thing. He was evaluating God's promise to give him an heir according to his experiences with mere humans. Didn't he know who he was talking to? Do we forget who we are hearing when we hear or read God's Word?
God hasn't promised you a million dollars. He hasn't promised you that you would be great and powerful. He hasn't promised that you will live a peaceful and easy life. SO don't even think that God is giving you a raw deal when bad things happen to you.
On the other hand, he promised to Abraham and to all the generations afterward that he would send his one and only Son .... AND HE DID! He promised that he would forgive our wickedness and forget our sins..... AND HE DID! He promised that he would rise on the third day..... AND HE DID! He promised that he will come back and take us to be where he is... AND HE WILL. He promised that he will come again to judge the living and the dead and restore his kingdom to what he intended before the fall... AND HE WILL!!
Trust his promises for the sole reason that HE IS GOD. He is not a mere human who fails. He is God and he always does what he says he is going to do. Trust in Him and have peace in His most certain promises of eternal life for you!
Prayer: Lord, when I doubt you, because of my experiences with this fallen creation, put away my fear and doubt and replace it with your peace and joy. Amen.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
13 The Lord looks down from heaven;
he sees all the children of man;
14 from where he sits enthroned he looks out
on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
and observes all their deeds.
16 The king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
and by its great might it cannot rescue.
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.
Tomorrow is primary election day in Missouri. One thing I've noticed is that we place A LOT of hope and even pressure on our elected officials. Many expect them to be our saviors. We think that if we vote for the right one all of our problems will be solved and the United States, Warren County, Warrenton, or even our side of Warrenton will be great again.
There is only one man who can make everything right again. There is only one man who can defeat all evil and deliver us from it. There is only one man who will make wrong things right, make bad things good, and give the whole earth peace. It isn't Donald Trump, it isn't Hillary Clinton. It isn't whoever gets elected as our governor, attorney general, or anything else.
Hear what the Lord says through King David, "The king is not saved by his great army, a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a false hope for salvation and by its great might it cannot be rescued."
The Lord is our only hope and our salvation! The Lord is our "help and our shield".
Or as Jesus says in our Gospel reading for yesterday "So is the one who stores up treasures for himself on earth but is not rich toward God.
Say what you want about your 401K, your elected officials, your job security. In the end, none of that can save you. None of it will add a single hour to your life. Only the Lord God can save, and he has through His Son, Jesus! Trust in Him!
He created the earth and sustains it. He gives you breath and takes it away. He cares for you and loves you with an everlasting love. He gives you all you need for this body and life! TRUST ONLY IN HIM!!!
Prayer: Lord, in the middle of all this uncertainty and political nonsense, give me peace, comfort, joy, and salvation in You. Amen.

"The Parable of the Rich Fool"
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." 14 But he said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?" 15 And he said to them, "Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." 16 And he told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' 18 And he said, 'I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry."' 20 But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God."
"I will say to my soul....." Did you get that part? What makes us think that if our barns are full, our checkbook is balanced, our savings account has enough in it, and we are saving enough for retirement, that everything is ok with our soul?
Do you remember this passage in Scripture, "The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil." What about that? I'm guilty of it myself. If my checking account has enough in it, my blood pressure is lower, my anxiety level goes down, and I am happier.
Do you remember this message from Jesus, "Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
Of what does your life consist? Do you count your possessions and keep them all under lock and key because of their importance? Do you keep from giving to church because of your possessions? Are possessions and money your god or is God your God?
This passage is a very stark reminder that as much as we like to think we have it all under control, our very breath, our very life is in God's hands. He gives us life. He gives us real peace. He gives us real joy. He gives us what we need for this life and the life to come.
Test yourself today and see what has control of you. Test your thoughts today and see where your allegiances lie. Test yourself today and see whether your comfort and peace comes from full barns or a full soul which has been satisfied by the love and forgiveness of Christ. Then CONFESS, REPENT, AND LIVE IN CHRIST'S PEACE TODAY!
Prayer: Lord, help me to do whatever it takes to get out of the rut of financial burden, even if it means giving everything away, so that I can live in real peace and grace. Amen.
