"The Parable of the Good Samaritan"
25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live."
29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30 Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii[a] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" 37 He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do likewise."
Contrary to popular understanding, this parable isn't necessarily about how to be a good person. The point of the story is truly the fact that the man was a Samaritan and not a true Israelite and yet, he helped his enemy.
You see, a lot of times, church people think they are good with God just because they are church people. They go to worship. They do all the right things as far as volunteering and giving. yet, when the rubber hits the road, or when their faith is tested they are found lacking.
Notice that the first two guys who happen upon the man who was hurt were church folks, one a priest and the other a Levite (of the family off the priests and often thought as more holy than everyone else.) Yet, when they see the man, they do nothing to help him, thus showing that their faith, at best, is shallow and selfish, and at worst is nonexistent.
The Samaritan, a half breed, on the other hand, probably still a faithful believer although not thought of as one, and certainly not thought of as holy because he wasn't of the "right" family, did stop and take care of the man.
My friends, this passage isn't just a good moral story about how to treat others. It's about Jesus, who, although he wasn't of the priestly family and in fact was from Nazareth and an outsider to say the least, was and still is our great High Priest. It's also the fact that, while we were still his enemies, he died for us. He is the one who finds us along the road dirty, beaten, and left for dead; and picks us up, heals us, and MOST IMPORTANLY, pays everything for us!
JESUS IS OUR GOOD SAMARITAN!! And because He lives in you by virtue of your baptism and faith, he works through you to do His will and to bring others to faith so that you can show the love of Jesus in your own life.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, thank you for being my good Samaritan, for finding me, though I was as good as dead, and for bringing me back to life. Amen.

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
2 To the saints and faithful brothers[a] in Christ at Colossae:Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant.[b] He is a faithful minister of Christ on your[c] behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks[d] to the Father, who has qualified you[e] to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
If only we would greet each other as saints in the way that Paul greets the Colossians in this passage. "We ALWAYS" thank God, the father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus......"
We don't do this enough. We aren't thankful for the faith of our brothers and sisters in Christ around us. We don't thank god nearly enough for the faith he has given us and those who are of the household of faith. We need to do that more?
Why? Because when people see our joy and thanksgiving for the faith we have received, and they see the difference it makes in our lives and in the lives of our families, they can't help but want it for themselves. I am convinced of this.
We are a growing church! You read that right.... St. John's is a growing church! It may not always look like it, but we are definitely growing. Six new people this past week! Two baptisms and four new members in the very near future. We just keep on growing in the middle of a society that seems to see Christianity shrinking. We're not doing anything special. We have very formal worship on Saturday and early Sunday, and a very informal chapel worship on Sunday morning, so it definitely isn't about the latest or best worship style. We aren't compromising God's Word or the Lutheran confessions. We are sticking to it as we are a part of the LCMS.
So what is causing our growth? It is the Holy Spirit working through his children! It is the joy we see, feel, and express when another person comes to Christ. It is the way we are proud of our church and the Word and Sacraments that it stands for. Most importantly it is the love and family atmosphere we have with one another!
It has nothing to do with me. I am just the hands, feet, and mouth of God. It has nothing to do with you! You are just the hands, feet, and mouth of God. It has everything to do with the Holy Spirit working in you and through you. The more you rest in Him, and the more you open your life to the Spirit's work, the more blessings he will bring!
Are you partaking of this growth? Are you thankful for the faith God has given to those around you? Are you all about the ministry and mission of St. John's to grow up in faith, to grow out into the community, and to grow together in fellowship? Or are you being selfish with your faith and faith life? If you are, I can only tell you to repent and get on board! Start thanking God for the faith of your brothers and sisters in Christ! Be joyful for His blessings! Give peace and forgiveness to those who need it! Invite people to worship! Most importantly, live and rest in God's grace so that he can work through to do His will!
Prayer: Lord, help me to rest in you, get out of your way, and let you do your work through me. Amen.

18 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, I am the Lord your God. 3 You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes. 4 You shall follow my rules[a] and keep my statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God. 5 You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:9-18
9 "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. 10 And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.
11 "You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. 12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
13 "You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning. 14 You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.
15 "You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life[of your neighbor: I am the Lord.
17 "You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
Jesus said that all the law can be summed up in that last verse you just read, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." If we just did that..... can you imagine what the world would look like? Can you imagine what your own relationships would look like? Can you imagine how your life would be different if YOU did that, if you loved your neighbor as yourself.
Unfortunately, none of us have kept this law as we should. We are sinful human beings, living in a sinful world, among other sinful people. Yet, because we have been washed and cleansed of our sin, we have the ability to live a new life. We have the Holy Spirit living in us, and because of that, we are able, by the Holy Spirit's power and urging, to love our neighbor as ourselves.
So... living this new life... how do we go about loving the way Christ wants us to? Well, he very plainly tells us and even commands us how. He says, "Give to anyone as he has need". He says, "Go and make disciples". He says, "If you forgive anyone their sins, they are forgiven them." These are the ways to "love your neighbor as yourself". Or if you want further instruction, just read the passage above over again. All these you are able to do by the power of the Holy Spirit living in you.
At the same time, you still have that sinful nature warring against the Spirit, and so there will be times, every day, that you will fail at loving. That's why Christ died and why Christ continues to give you His forgiveness through the Word and the Sacraments. Trust in that today. Know that your sins are forgiven, and live by the Spirit!
Prayer: Lord, we thank you for cleansing us from all our failures. Help us to live by Your Spirit so that we can love youand our neighbor. Amen.
