DEVOTION:  Psalm 96:1-9  English Standard Version (ESV)

"Worship in the Splendor of Holiness"

96 Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
    sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
    tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvelous works among all the peoples!
For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
    he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering, and come into his courts!
Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;[a]
    tremble before him, all the earth!

I always like a new song, especially if it is a really good one.  I love listening to the radio and hearing that new catchy tune or that new singer sing.  It is refreshing and if the song is especially good it sticks with you and you remember it the rest of the day.  It can change your mood and make you feel good.  It can cause you to think of good things and even make a bad circumstance easier to take.

Could that be what David is trying to get at in our Psalm for today?  Does he want is to sing a new song to refresh our hearts and minds?  Does he want us to make a difference in the lives of others by sharing the GOOD NEWS of the Lord's salvation?  Does he want us to give credit where credit is due, and cause others to draw near to the Lord so that He can lift them up out of the doldrums of their lives or give them peace in the middle of their trouble and anxiety?

YES!  We are God's witnesses!  We are His messengers of grace to the world!  When the world is in need of peace, we are just the right ones to give it to them.  When someone is in need of forgiveness, we have been given the power an the authority to give it to him or her.  When a person is wrought with anxiety and worry over their circumstances, we can provide that peace that passes all understanding!

As we wake up and get going on this Monday morning, David is encouraging us to be light in this dark world, to be the hope to the hopeless, the love to the loveless, the forgiveness the unforgiven, and the life to those who are dead in their trespasses and sins!

Be that life, that hope, that forgiveness, and that peace today!

Prayer: Lord, make us sing a new song to you so that you may renew our strength and that strength may overflow to those around us.  Amen.

Mission Mondays: St. Paul's Lutheran-College Hill

The urban ministry of St. Paul's has been growing and evolving with positive outreach into the community.

Step one in doing ministry in the College Hill area was to have a worker of the kingdom live in the parsonage. Help from area congregations has and is helping to make the parsonage livable once again.

Second was obtaining a worker. Vicar James Kirschenmann and his wife Kathie are now living in the parsonage. The Missouri District grant has helped to make this step possible. He graduated this spring and was called to St. Paul's so that this ministry may continue.  Read more . . .

DEVOTION:  John 8:48-59

"Before Abraham Was, I Am"
48 The Jews answered him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?" 49 Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." 52 The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.' 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?" 54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.'[a] 55 But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad." 57 So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"[b] 58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Abraham was considered the father of the Israelites.  He started their nation.  So when Jesus said, "Before Abraham was, I am" he was making himself greater than Abraham.  He was blaspheming in their ears and their eyes.

The truth is that not only did Jesus exist before Abraham, he CREATED Abraham.  He is, was and always will be Abraham's God.  Jesus isn't just a good dude to think about every once in a while.  He isn't just our friend, (although he is definitely our friend.)  He is so much more than just a man who suffered and died.  He is God!  He is the same as the Father.  He is the same as the Holy Spirit.

When we speak that Athanasian Creed tomorrow and Sunday, it is to remind ourselves and those around us that Jesus is our GOD!!  He is much more than the guy who does good stuff for us.  He is more than the guy who answers our prayers.  He is our maker and redeemer!  He is our EVERYTHING!!  Let's act like it today!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for being my everything.  Help me to honor you for who you truly are today with my words, my love, my forgiveness, and my very life.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ   According to Solomon, what is the purpose of his Proverbs?

Here's Pat King's answer:  (Please note that Pat's views and commentary are not necessarily the views and commentary of Pastor Klaustermeier or St. John's Lutheran Church...... but they are pretty stinking funny most of the time.)

Oh! Oh! Oh! I am on a definite roll, because I know this one too!
First off, Proverbs are NOT professional verbs. Nor was Solomon trying to make them such. Really! Mostly because they didn't have 1st round draft choices back then. So, really no point in trying to turn verbs professionals.

Nor were they just written so Solomon could whine, whine, whine about everything under the sun. He saved that for Ecclesiastes. No, Proverbs were supposed to teach people how to understand wise sayings, be wise themselves, and to be disciplined and discreet. All this from a dude who ended up with a harem consisting of over 1000 women – really discreet there, Sol! – and who royally screwed up his relationship with God. (Maybe he should have gone back, at the end of his life, and read verse 7 of the first chapter of the book.)

Anyway, here's what Proverbs says about their purpose (just in case you don't believe me):

These are the proverbs of Solomon, David's son, king of Israel.
Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline,
to help them understand the insights of the wise.
Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives,
to help them do what is right, just, and fair.
These proverbs will give insight to the simple,
knowledge and discernment to the young.
Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser.
Let those with understanding receive guidance
by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables,
the words of the wise and their riddles.
Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Proverbs 1:1-7

DEVOTION:  Proverbs 8:1-4      English Standard Version (ESV)

"The Blessings of Wisdom"

Does not wisdom call?
    Does not understanding raise her voice?
On the heights beside the way,
    at the crossroads she takes her stand;
beside the gates in front of the town,
    at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:
"To you, O men, I call,
    and my cry is to the children of man.

22 "The Lord possessed[a] me at the beginning of his work,[b]
    the first of his acts of old.
23 Ages ago I was set up,
    at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
24 When there were no depths I was brought forth,
    when there were no springs abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains had been shaped,
    before the hills, I was brought forth,
26 before he had made the earth with its fields,
    or the first of the dust of the world.
27 When he established the heavens, I was there;
    when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28 when he made firm the skies above,
    when he established[c] the fountains of the deep,
29 when he assigned to the sea its limit,
    so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
30     then I was beside him, like a master workman,
and I was daily his[d] delight,
    rejoicing before him always,
31 rejoicing in his inhabited world
    and delighting in the children of man.

When Solomon uses the pronoun "I" is he talking about himself?  Is he saying that he, Solomon, was with God from the beginning?  No.  He is talking about wisdom, and in fact the personification of wisdom, in essence the pre-incarnate Christ.  Christ is the Word made flesh.  He is wisdom incarnate.

Wisdom starts with a knowledge of Christ and His love and forgiveness.  Wisdom starts with knowing that you don't know it all, that you don't have all the answers.  It starts with knowing that you have and always will make mistakes.

Once you get all that, then you can marvel at the all encompassing wisdom of God.  It is so far above and beyond everything that we can ever comprehend.  So when we question God, as Job did, and try to argue with Him, or change His ways, He has every right to strike us down and say, "who are you that you should question me?"

Instead of destroying us forever He has mercy on us.  In His wisdom He loves us with an eternal love.  In His wisdom He sent His Son to be wisdom incarnate for us and to suffer and die in our stead.  Praise God for His wisdom toward us today!

Prayer: Lord God, thank You for sending Your Son, Wisdom Incarnate, to be Wisdom for us.  Give us Your wisdom by the power of Your Spirit, that we might live in peace forevermore.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ   What is Sheol?

Oh! I know this one too! And don't even have to look it up, because, YES!!!!, I am that dang smart. Despite what all of you may have heard!

First off, "Sheol" is not some OLD lady. No. It's. Not. I know. she-ol does sound like it could be, but trust me on this.
It is actually the "abode of the dead." The Jewish version of Hades – if you're into Greek mythology – which I used to read when I was young.
According to the Hebrew texts, it is a "place of darkness to which all the dead go, both the righteous and the unrighteous, regardless of the moral choices made in life, a place of stillness and darkness cut off from life and from God."
The Catholics call it purgatory. I know, because after my Catholic grandmother bit the dust, the priest hit us up for some cash to get her out. Not sure if the Jews do the same thing, but doubt it. That was more of a pre-Reformation thing.

PASTOR KLAUSTERMEIER IS BIKING 1,000 MILES THIS SUMMER FOR LEADACHILD!!!

We have been blessed beyond measure in the United States haven't we?  I want you to join me in making a global difference by releasing children from poverty through Christian education.

Instead of taking a week off and joining my fellow Lead a Child bikers who are riding the Fault Line across four states this year,  I have decided to go solo and bike 1,000 miles locally and while on vacation by August 1 to raise funds for LeadaChild. Would you sponsor me so that I can raise funds to support this most worthy organization?  In my opinion, there is no more worthy organization to support than LeadaChild!

LeadaChild  provides educational assistance to over 26,000 children and shares the love of Jesus Christ with the students and their families! LeadaChild supports the poorest of the poor children through Christian education in the following countries:

Guatemala                    Chad                       Honduras               Palestine               Haiti             Uganda

Gambia                          Ivory Coast            El Salvador            Nigeria                   Panama       Nicaragua

Burma                            Ghana                     Chile                       Venezuela             Bolivia         Mexico

Liberia                            Uruguay                Sri Lanka                India                       Guinea        Sierra Leone

Bangladesh                   Cambodia              South Africa         Togo                       Thailand

 These students need your help to find a way out of poverty through Christian education and learn of the hope of Christ our Savior.

Please fill out your information below and send it with your check or donate online through the LeadaChild website: http://www.leadachild.org/bike

Every dollar makes a difference. Please give generously.  Please remember all of the riders in your prayers!  Thank you much for your support!

Biking For Kids Together,

Pastor Jeremy Klaustermeier

LeadaChild  is a 501 C-3 non-profit organization and is a Recognized Service Organization of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
