"The Promise of the Holy Spirit"
1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 And while staying[a] with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit not many days from now."
"The Ascension"
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."
It is always interesting to me how dependent we are on God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The disciples would have had no power to do anything if Jesus wouldn't have sent His Holy Spirit ten days from the time of this reading. They would have still been gazing up into heaven if Jesus had not sent His angels to instruct them on where to go and what to do next. They would have never been his witnesses even in Jerusalem, much less Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth if the Holy Spirit had not entered them.
The same is true for you as a Christian. You don't do anything in faith apart from the Holy Spirit moving you to do it. In fact, your old sinful nature is what often keeps you from doing what the Holy Spirit wants to do in you. This is why, when you try to do something without the guidance of God and only with your own human will, you will be frustrated and fail. Once you give that part over to the Holy Spirit and pray for Him to move you to do the right thing, you will experience the freedom that you truly have in Christ, the freedom to do what is right and rest in His grace.
As you read through the book of Acts you will see that it is only and always by the Lord's bidding, calling, prodding, and converting that things happen. All we are called to do is go where he calls us to go, live in His love, and open our mouths to speak His praise.
Prayer: O Lord, open my lips and my mouth will declare Your praise. Move my feet and I will go where you send me. Lift my hands to do Your work, and at the end of the day close my eyes in Your peace and rest. Amen.

"When Brothers Dwell in Unity: A Song of Ascents. Of David."
133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when brothers dwell in unity!
2 It is like the precious oil on the head,
running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on the collar of his robes!
3 It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord has commanded the blessing,
life forevermore.
Quite a few of us, because it is Spring and we are out in the sun a bit more, have sunburn. What feels good on sunburn? How about lotion, aloe, or oil? It is soothing. It is comforting.
A church that is in unity of belief and purpose is a soothing and peaceful place to be. A church where we can look forward to what God would have us to do instead of individual agendas and personal vendettas. When churches are full of individuals instead of acting as the body of Christ it isn't as effective as witnessing to the community. Likewise, when people think that they don't matter to the church, when they think their attendance isn't necessary at worship and fellowship, then they are not dwelling together in unity with the rest of the family of Christ.
Everyone loves it when our sanctuary is full for worship. It is a soothing thing to hear 250 voices together in unity singing hymns and praising God. Everyone likes it when we are working together to bring more people to Christ and His church! It is a soothing thing to see another person washed in the waters of Holy Baptism. There is a peace that passes all understanding for the whole people of God when we hear His Word and receive His body and blood together.
My prayer for you, my brothers and sisters in Christ, is that you where we are in disagreement and disunity, we would reconcile our differences, and where those disagreements are about things that have nothing to do with our unity in Christ, we would agree to disagree so that we can dwell together fully as brothers and sisters in Christ until the day of Christ's return!
Let's make St. John's a beacon of unity, hope, and peace in our community!
Prayer: Lord, you have given us a Spirit of unity in a bond of peace. Help us to dwell together in unity of heart, body, and mind so that we and all around us can have that continual peace that passes all understanding. Amen.

23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
25 "I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.[a] 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father."
29 His disciples said, "Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God." 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."
Remember the song "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden"? Every time I read or hear Jesus' words in this reading I can't help but think of that song. Truth is that Jesus never promised us prosperity or financial stability in this world. He never told us that everything would be peachy while we live here on this earth. In fact, he really promises just the opposite. He promises hardship, trouble, persecution, and He even promised the disciples that they would die for His name's sake.
Another way to put it is that God doesn't always calm the storms of our lives. he doesn't always fix our circumstances. He isn't necessarily going to get rid of the bullies. He isn't necessarily going to make your job more enjoyable or your boss more favorable toward you. That's why when you ask for these physical earthly things you always should ask them with the statement "If it be Your will." to remind yourself that not everything you want is always what God wants. He may just want you to suffer, or to go through a tough time so that He can grow your faith and make you stronger. Also, none of us is going to escape this world alive, so to think that it is always God's will to deliver us from injury and disease is just silly. Ultimately He will deliver us all from these things through physical death which leads to eternal life!
Let this be a lesson to you. When you don't know how to pray, pray the Lord's prayer. In everything know that, "In this world you will have trouble, but TAKE HEART, I (Jesus) have overcome the world!"
Prayer: Lord, bless help me to realize that You aren't ever against me when things go wrong, but that sometimes it is Your will that I go through them to grow. Amen.

"The New Jerusalem"
9 Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, "Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb." 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.
22 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
The3 number 12, throughout the Bible, is a number that refers to the people of God. In the Old Testament it was the number of the tribes of Israel. In the New Testament it was the disciples/apostles. Even after Judas betrayed Jesus and then went and killed himself, the rest of the apostles made sure someone took his place so there would be twelve.
So, in our reading, when it says that the city is basically made up of twelve of everything, it is saying that the city is made up of the people of God. The people are what make the place. The people are what make the church as well.
I'm Facebook friends with a pastor in Africa named Simon Peter Waako. He is a Lutheran pastor in Uganda. The church buildings he preaches and teaches at are not much to behold compared to the ornate building we have at St. John's. Yet, because Simon is speaking God's Word and because the Holy Spirit is working through him the churches are growing. I'm not sure how many churches he has right now. I think it's 4 or 5. He travels hundreds of miles every week. Yet, because it is about the people and not the building and because God's Word is being preached to people and people are hearing it and believing it, the church is growing! That's how it works.
Just think of the number of people that will be in paradise with us who believe! It is an unimaginable number! Think of the joy we will experience when we see all the people that have gone before us into heaven. Oh what joy it will be!
Prayer: Lord, when I get bogged down by this world and its seemingly endless tasks, help me to remember that all the people of God will join You one day in paradise! Amen.
