DEVOTION:  Luke 20:9-20  (ESV)
"The Parable of the Wicked Tenants"

And he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. 10 When the time came, he sent a servant[a] to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.' 14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.' 15 And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "Surely not!" 17 But he looked directly at them and said, "What then is this that is written:

"'The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone'?[b]

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him."

19 The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. 20 So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.

This parable is about God's relationship with the people he created.

1. He gave us this world to us to live in and to reap the benefits of it.

2. He sent prophet after prophet (Moses, Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel, etc.) that the people rejected and treated badly.  People continue to reject the Word today.

3. Then he sent his Son, and they rejected him.  They beat him and they killed him thinking they could somehow keep the property for themselves.  They didn't understand that the Lord had sent His Son to rescue them.  People still reject Him and act hostile toward Him.

Even though the world is not ours, we often think it is.  Even though our possessions and even our own abilities and talents are gifts from God, we somehow think that they are ours, and so we treat them as such.  When we fail to realize that all we have is a gift of God, and then he comes expecting to get just some of the fruit of the vineyard, and we don't give him what is owed to him, namely the honor, respect, love and the fruits of faith that he has cultivated, what do you think his reaction should be?

Thankfully, if you believe and have received the owner of the vineyard, namely the Lord Himself, you need not worry about being destroyed.  This parable is a warning to those who reject God's message and His messengers.  It is a warning to those who think that the vineyard, namely their very lives, are their own and not the Lord's. It is a warning to those who don't realize and understand that the Lord is God, and He alone will judge.

It is also a reminder of God's grace to us even while we are here on this earth.  He has planted this world, with all of it's blessings and put us in this vineyard we call earth, not to abuse it, and certainly not to dishonor our creator with it, but to keep it and harvest it for the day when the Lord returns!

Live in this world knowing that it is only temporary, that it is not your own, and that one day the master will return and all we have to do is receive him and share his fruit with Him forever!

Prayer: Lord, you have blessed us with so many blessings, too abundant for us to recount it all.  Make us grateful tenants of your creation, and help us to share the fruits of your labor with you.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ      Where was Moses supposed to go to see the Promised Land and to die?

Deuteronomy 32:48-52  (ESV)
48 That very day the Lord spoke to Moses, 49 "Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho, and view the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel for a possession. 50 And die on the mountain which you go up, and be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died in Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51 because you broke faith with me in the midst of the people of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, and because you did not treat me as holy in the midst of the people of Israel. 52 For you shall see the land before you, but you shall not go there, into the land that I am giving to the people of Israel."

Thanks Don Nolte!

"Go and Be Reconciled: What Does This Mean?"
A one-day seminar of reconciliation

Saturday, April 16th
8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Immanuel Lutheran Church
632 East Hwy. N
Wentzville, MO  63385

Registration fee:          $20 per person, lunch included

Who should attend?     Pastors, elders, and church leaders

Conflict in congregations can cause hurt and divisions that divert our attention from the work that the Lord has given to us.  This seminar is intended to help congregational leaders to model Biblical approaches to conflict.
"Go and Be Reconciled: What Does This Mean?" reflects on the biblical teaching for reconciliation while reviewing the six chief parts of Christian doctrine from Luther's Small Catechism. The study answers "What does this mean?" through two parts: "Be Reconciled to God" and "Be Reconciled to Others."

More information (schedule, presenter bio) can be found on the Missouri District Web site.

DEVOTION: Philippians 3:4b-14   English Standard Version (ESV)
If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law,[a] blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

There is nothing comparable to knowing Jesus as Lord.  No amount of accolades, no prize, no wealth, no power.... nothing can compare.

Why?  Because knowing Christ gives us:

1. Peace- When we know Christ and his forgiveness, we need not fear anything, even death.  We may suffer for a time.  We will certainly experience pain.  We can't get out of this earth without experiencing death, unless Jesus comes back first.  But we also know that even death won't destroy us.  We know that there is no end to our life with Jesus!  And so we have that peace that the world doesn't understand.  We can go through anything, endure everything, and do everything through Christ who gives us strength.

2. Reconciliation- While the world keeps on fighting their fights fruitlessly and pointlessly, we are able to give and receive forgiveness.  We don't have to hold on to grudges.  We don't have to hate someone forever no matter how evil they were to us or to the people we love.  By the power of the Holy Spirit we can let that sin go.  We don't have to hold on to guilt either.  As Paul says, "Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

3. the resurrection!  We have the truth that Jesus is alive!  Because Jesus has risen from the dead, and death has not held him, it can't hold us either!  Praise the Lord!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us knowledge of you!  Give that knowledge to others through us as we live our lives in your grace.  Amen.

LENT DINNERS ARE EVERY WEDNESDAY DURING LENT AT 5:30!!
Over the last many, many years your Jr. and Sr. high youth and their parents (mostly their parents) have been serving dinner on Wednesday nights during Lent.  While this is a good way for the youth and their parents to serve and give back to the congregation, it is also supposed to be a way for them to raise money for their service projects and trips.

Unfortunately over the past several years, they have barely broken even on these dinners.  The parents usually donate the desserts and even much of the other food out of their own pockets.  Without that the youth would probably lose money.

It is especially important that they make money this year, as they will need all they can get to make their goal for the National Youth Gathering in new Orleans.

I want to encourage you all to attend these dinners, and, while there is no set price per person for these dinners, a generous free will offering is strongly encouraged!!

Below is the Menu for each week:

salad

March 16-

DEVOTION:  Isaiah 43:16-21

16 Thus says the Lord,
who makes a way in the sea,
a path in the mighty waters,
17 who brings forth chariot and horse,
    army and warrior;
they lie down, they cannot rise,
they are extinguished, quenched like a wick:
18 "Remember not the former things,
nor consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
    and rivers in the desert.
20 The wild beasts will honor me,
    the jackals and the ostriches,
for I give water in the wilderness,
    rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,
21     the people whom I formed for myself
that they might declare my praise.

We all like new things, don't we?  Well, not always.  If this new thing is a new job because the old one that we loved went away, we might not like it too much.  If it's a new diagnosis the next time you go to the doctor, it may not be something you enjoy too much.  If it is a new hymn in church you definitely won't like it, it's just a proven fact.

The new thing that the Lord is doing and will do is something we will definitely like though.  He will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

When we are burned out and just dusty, dirty, dry, and done with life, the Lord will provide the water we need to wash ourselves, to drink, and to be refreshed.  The waters of baptism do just that.  In them we are renewed day by day as we remember what the Lord has done for us.  He has washed away all that hinders and holds us down.

The old way of things was dependent on the people.  God promised that if the people did all that he commanded and lived lives worthy of Him, they would live long in the land that he had given them.  If they disobeyed the Lord and did what is evil in his sight, they would be taken away and would no longer live in the promised land.

The new way is that the Lord sent his perfect sinless Son to live the perfect life we couldn't live and die the sacrificial death we couldn't die all in our place and for us.  This new way doesn't depend on us.  It only d3epends on Almighty God!  It is the only way that will work, because He is able to do it.  We aren't!

What a new and wonderful way it is!  Praise the Lord!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for making your Son Jesus the new way in this wilderness we call life so that we can make it through to the end which is you and eternal life.

March 9-
pasta
salad
rolls
desserts

March 16-
Fried Chicken
potatoes
corn
rolls
desserts

As always, thank you for your continued support of the future of Christianity!!!

YOLO?

TEXT: Luke 6:31 - Do to others as you would have them do to you.

The difference between something that's just inspirational and something biblical is hard to see at times. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other such websites are filled with funny, helpful, not-so-helpful, and sometimes just plain wrong content. Let's take a minute to think about these things.

From social media I am regularly told to "follow my heart," "dance like no one's watching," or "keep calm" about something. Some of those aren't so bad, right? Some can be silly or funny. Some of them send a message that can be dangerous, though. Take "YOLO" (you only live once), for instance. It seems innocent enough, at first. However, it's frequently used to excuse bad behavior. Being irresponsible is okay because "Hey, you only live once! Just do what you want!" Even advice like "follow your heart" can be tricky. By nature, we are sinners. Why would I follow the desires of my heart? My heart's been wrong more than a few times. That could be a dangerous path.

Biblical guidance is where you find the good stuff. The Word of God tells us to "love one another" and "forgive your enemy" and how we are to be "the light of the world." The "golden rule" is God's personal advice: "Do unto others as you would have them do to you." That's not just a good idea, that's God's way of living. His way is what brings you happiness and contentment in this world. Keep His Word in mind the next time you're surfing for inspiration on the Internet.

THE PRAYER: Jesus, this is a confusing world we live in. So many sources of info tell me different things that it's hard to know what's good and true. Lord, help me understand what is pleasing to You. Remind me to look to You for advice and inspiration. Amen.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 126

126 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
    and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
"The Lord has done great things for them."
The Lord has done great things for us;
    we are glad.

Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
    like streams in the Negeb!
Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
    bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
    bringing his sheaves with him.

For all of us there are times of great rejoicing and joy and times of great sorrow and weeping.  Sometimes these can both happen in the very same day, even the same hour.   Our circumstances can most certainly change in an instant.  They can change as a direct result of our actions or totally and completely despite our actions. Our circumstances are like the weather in Missouri, 30 degrees and snowing one day and 75 degrees and tornadoes the next.   If there's one thing we can't trust, it's our circumstances.

There is one thing, one person, we can trust.  He is Jesus!  He goes above and beyond our circumstances, but he also stays with us in our circumstances.  He is the solid rock we can hold on to when the winds of change are whipping all around us.  He is the steady in our unsteady life.  He is the impenetrable fortress when our human walls are crumbling all around us.

And one day, ONE DAY, he will restore our circumstances to himself.  One day, whether it is the day of our death, or the day of His judgment, it will be the end of all that uncertainty and all that trouble and the beginning of a sweet, steady, and certain rest.  Then we will laugh out loud and our tongues, throats, and lungs will be filled with nothing but shouts of joy!

Until that day, we still have a steady God with us, by our side, and in us who holds us close and won't let us go.  Trust in His steady and certain love today!

Prayer: Lord, remind me that I have you to hold on to when the storms around me are raging and everything is crumbling.  Amen.
