The Temptation of Jesus
4 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." 4 And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'" 5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, "To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." 8 And Jesus answered him, "It is written,
"'You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him only shall you serve.'"
9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,
"'He will command his angels concerning you,
to guard you,'
11 and
"'On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"
12 And Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'" 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
Why did Jesus do this? Why did he go into the wilderness, starve himself for forty days, and subject himself to the devil's temptation at the end of it? In short, He did it all for you!
Just think about how weak you are and how often you have fallen into temptation. Just think about your lack of discipline. Someone needed to be perfect here on earth in order to be the perfect sacrifice for all sin for all time, and it certainly wasn't and isn't going to be you and me. Someone had to suffer all the same things that we do and yet do it without sin. That someone, that only one, was Jesus! He did it because we couldn't. He did it, because He loves us. He did it, because we are HIS!
As we look at His example, it is, of course, a good example to follow. We should fight against temptation with God's Word. We should tell Satan off at every chance using God's Word. For our own good, and to save ourselves for a lot of heartache and stress, we should fight temptation every time it comes upon us. At the same time, knowing who we are, and knowing the sinful nature that is a part of us, we should also thank Jesus that he has accomplished all of it perfectly for us already, and then rest in the knowledge that when we do fall into temptation, we have a God who loves us and forgives us for the sake of Hsi Son!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for accomplishing all righteousness for us. Help us to follow your example and to continualy fight against temptation, but also, when it's all said and done, help us to rest in you. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S BIBLE QUIZ: Over which nation did Sihon reign as king? Sihon was king of the Amorites
We'll be looking at different rough drawings of economical ways that we can accomplish what we want to do to accommodate our growing congregation and support the future of our church! EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO ATTEND THIS MEETING!!
Unfortunately over the past several years, they have barely broken even on these dinners. The parents usually donate the desserts and even much of the other food out of their own pockets. Without that the youth would probably lose money.
It is especially important that they make money this year, as they will need all they can get to make their goal for the National Youth Gathering in new Orleans.
I want to encourage you all to attend these dinners, and, while there is no set price per person for these dinners, a generous free will offering is strongly encouraged!!
Below is the Menu for each week:
Feb 17-
Chili
baked potato bar
hotdogs
desserts
Feb 24-
Fried Chicken
Stuffing
green beans
apple sauce
desserts
March 2-
taco bar w/all the fixings
desserts
March 9-
pasta
salad
rolls
desserts
March 16-
Fried Chicken
potatoes
corn
rolls
desserts
As always, thank you for your continued support of the future of Christianity!!!

8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
For many years I have heard the phrase or the term "self confidence". What about you, what about yourself gives you confidence?
I have to admit that I've never had much if any self confidence. I have had asthma since I can remember so I have not had any confidence in all the things that asthma hinders, like running fast or long distances, and just having strong legs. I have never been the sharpest or most observant tool in the drawer, I can hold my own, but I certainly don't have confidence in my brain or my knowledge. I am constantly falling prey to the temptation of food, and especially the last couple weeks I haven't been very active or disciplined in my fitness. So I defnitely don't have confidence in my self discipline or my ability to fight temptation on my own.
In all reality, I don't really have any self confidence...... and that's okay.
The season of Lent begins tonight with Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday may be the ultimate admission by us that none of us have reason to be self confident. As we have confession and absolution tonight, as we have ashes smudged on our foreheads, and as we come, humbled and broken, to the altar for the bbody and blood of Christ, we admit that we are truly dust and to dust we shall return.
At the same time, as we do all these things, and as that smudge is in the shape of a cross, we confess and proclaim that our confidence is in Christ! Our confidence is in what the Lord Jesus has done for us! We have confidence in the cross! We have confidence in the fact that Christ reigns at the right hand of the Father and will come back to judge the living and the dead! And we have confidence that we will live with Him forever!
Certainly God has blessed us with different abilities. Some can run fast. Others can work well with their hands. Others are able to work with numbers and do math well. Still others have big ears that they are good at listneing and being shoulders to cry on. Yet, we don't have confidence in our abilities. We have confidence in the one who gives us those abilities and will use those abilities for His glory!
Let us pray: Lord, as we go into this season of Lent, help us to rely on unreliable things such as ourselves, and instead rely on the ultimate reliable You. Amen.
