DEVOTION: Isaiah 7:10-14 (ESV)
10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 "Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven." 12 But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test." 13 And he said, "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.[
We usually read this passage at Christmas, but it is quite an interesting story all together. Ahaz was a wicked King who wouldn't listen to God, and because he didn't listen to God or do what he said, the kingdom grew weaker and weaker. God was trying to help them out, but they were, in essence, refusing His help. They had become too self righteous.
To show how them all, including King Ahaz himself, how self righteous and indignant they had become, God tells Ahaz to "ask for a sign". That's all he's got to do, but he won't do it. He wants to show his own self-righteousness and throw it in God's face.
That is when God, through Isaiah gives them this prophecy "Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." While Ahaz would have had no clue what this prophecy was about, generations later this prophecy would come to full fruition in Jesus.
Maybe your own heart has been hard and proud lately, and you are living in your own stubborn self righteousness. REPENT! Maybe you are struggling with thinking things like "I don't need to go to church to be a good Christian", or "I don't need the church." REPENT! Maybe in your pride and arrogance you can't hear God's clear and certain call to forgive your brother and to be forgiven. REPENT!!
Don't be like Ahaz who's ears were so stopped up with self-righteousness that he couldn't hear God calling him to repentance. Open your ears and listen to what GOD ALMIGHTY is calling you to today!!
Prayer: Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, to reach out and touch Him and say that we love Him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Immanuel, GOD WITH US! Amen.

DEVOTION: Luke 1:39-56
39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be[a] a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."
Mary's Song of Praise: The Magnificat
46 And Mary said,
"My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever."
56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.
(Spoiler alert: This is a bit of the sermon for this weekend.)
Why do you magnify something? You magnify it to make it bigger so you can see it better, don't you? Why then does Mary say, "My soul now magnifies the Lord"?
Mary, never wanted the spotlight. She never wanted people to praise her or to put her up on a pedestal. She was simply a woman whose soul magnified the Lord. She became less so Christ could become more. Here in this passage she is both overwhelmed with joy and maybe even a little bit of fear. She was going to give birth to God's Son. Can you imagine the thoughts and wonder that would be going through her head? That's why it says several times, "Mary kept all of these things and pondered them in her heart". She didn't go around boasting about it. She didn't really even let anyone know anything about it.
What about you? Does your soul magnify the Lord, or are you more prone to try to magnify yourself? When I think of this I think of certain politicians who, because of the nature of running for office, have to magnify themselves. Nothing could be more of a put off for me. I wish Ben Carson would and could be our president, but he is too quiet and hasn't magnified himself enough.
Our souls should magnify the Lord, not ourselves. When people see our hear us, they should hear or see Jesus. The biggest compliment I get is when little kids call me Jesus, because that means the He is what they hear and see from me.
Plan on magnifying Jesus today! In your dealings with people, share Jesus. Give a simple "Peace be with you" or "Jesus loves you" or even just "A blessed Christmas" to everyone you meet.
Prayer: Lord, make my soul magnify you today and every day. Amen.

A prayer request from Ron Williams

Today they got the test results back and the cancer has spread every where . It seems the doctors were right . She is a Mother of 4 with 4 step children and a grandmother of 8. She is only 50 yrs. Old . Its been very hard on my Brother and the kids. It appears her suffering will soon be over . I pray that the family could find some comfort in our Lords words and each other. Thanks

DEVOTION: Hebrews 10:5-10 (ESV)
5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,
"Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
but a body have you prepared for me;
6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings
you have taken no pleasure.
7 Then I said, 'Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.'"
8 When he said above, "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he added, "Behold, I have come to do your will." He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
In the Old Testament sacrifices and burnt offerings were given to pay for sin. Different ones were prescribed for different sins, sometimes a bull, sometimes a ram, other times a grain offering. God had intended these offerings and sacrifices more as a way to show the people how costly it was when you sinned. It was a way to, in essence, show them that there was no way they could pay for their sins themselves.
What ended up happening is that the people misunderstood that. They thought they were truly making satisfaction for all of their wrongdoing. They thought that these sacrifices fulfilled their "obligation" to the Lord, when all along there was no obligation.
What God wanted was their hearts. he wanted them to do His will, not under obligation, but out of love and honor for the Lord.
That's where Jesus comes in. Not only did he make total satisfaction for all sins for all time, but he did God's will completely out of love and honor for the Father and for His children, for us. Jesus became prophet, priest, and king for us. He has fulfilled the obligation of blood for sin, a perfect will toward God, and the love that we are unable to give.
Since the Holy Spirit lives in us and regenerates us, we are able to live holy lives now, not under obligation, but out of love and honor for Christ. We can worship with true hearts. We can do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. We can pray! We can work! We can be at peace with God and one another. All this we can do because off what Christ has done for us!!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for sending your Son to be prophet, priest, and King for us. Christ, thank you for fulfilling God's will for us! Holy Spirit, thank you for regeneration us and for keeping us int he faith until the Day of Jesus. Amen.
