DEVOTION:  Psalm 80:1-7 (ESV)

80 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,
    you who lead Joseph like a flock.
You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth.
    Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh,
stir up your might
    and come to save us!

Restore us, O God;
    let your face shine, that we may be saved!

O Lord God of hosts,
    how long will you be angry with your people's prayers?
You have fed them with the bread of tears
    and given them tears to drink in full measure.
You make us an object of contention for our neighbors,
    and our enemies laugh among themselves.

Restore us, O God of hosts;
    let your face shine, that we may be saved!

As Karin has been home lately she's been watching a lot of HGTV.  On that channel there are several shows like "Flip or Flop" and "Fixer Upper"  and other home renovation shows that take old houses and make them new.  They take the old junk out and replace it with all new or at least "repurposed" stuff.  They RESTORE what was useless and many times unlivable and turn it into something beautiful.

That's the same thing King David is calling on God to do for us today.  He is calling on God to RESTORE us and make us new, to take away all the old sinful stuff in our lives and create a new heart and a right spirit within us.  He asks God to let his face shine upon us that we may be saved.

How does this restoration happen?  Well, first there is the demolition.  When we confess our sins to God and turn from them to Him, it is as if he takes a sledge hammer to our sin and pulverizes it.  He totally annihilates all that nasty, old, shameful sin in us and clears it out leaving it in the dumpster of hell.

Next he takes his own love, his mercy, and his grace and begins to repair the holes in the wall and all the stains and blemishes that sin has left behind.  He white washes the walls and primes them with his forgiveness.

Thirdly, in the place of all that old cabinetry and furniture, he places new fixtures of joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self control.  He takes what was a heart of stone and replaces it with a pure heart that is full of him.

Lastly, he dwells in that heart with His power and might so that he can keep it clean and pure.  He keeps it clean as His own Word goes into the hears and straight to the heart, and as His own body and blood go into the mouth for the forgiveness of sins.  And as he dwells in it there is peace in his newly renovated house and it is a peace that passes all understanding but never goes away.

How wonderful is that?  Who knew that when we surrender our dirty, cold, and useless heart to God he is able to do such wonderfully miraculous things?

Remember this all during this Advent and Christmas Season.  If you heart, your soul, needs some major renovations get them done today at no cost to you.  The price has already been paid by Christ on the cross!  The whole bill is paid in full!  Alleluia!  Praise the Lord!

Prayer:  Thank you for restoring us, O Lord, and for creating a new and right spirit within me.  Amen.

DEVOTIONLuke 7:18-35

18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, 19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?" 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?'" 21 In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me."

24 When John's messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings' courts. 26 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written,

"'Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
    who will prepare your way before you.'

28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." 29 (When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John, 30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

31 "To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,

"'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
    we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.'

33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' 35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children."

Some people aren't going to be satisfied no matter what.  They didn't like John because he didn't live like they did.  He was too weird.  They didn't like Jesus because He was TOO MUCH like they were.  He ate regular food and even drank wine.

Those who don't want to submit to the will of God, and those who will pick and choose what Scripture they want to believe and don't want to believe will never be satisfied with God's Word.  They will never be satisfied to say "If God says it, I say it." or "If it's God's will, I will abide by it."

It is hard for all off us, because our will human will is naturally opposed to God's will by virtue of being born of two human parents and living after the Fall of Adam and Eve.  Yet, by the power of the Holy Spirit working through His Word and Sacraments, we have been regenerated.  We have been born again.  And so, as we are being continually brought closer to God's will as He sanctifies up more and more as we see the Day of the Lord approaching.

I know He is forming me more and more, day by day, as I have gone through discipline and times of struggle to strip and chip away at all that hard sin I have in my life.  I know he's doing the same for you.  Look for it!  Realize it!  Rejoice in it!  Accept it!  When you do, it will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.  You will see God's will in a whole new light.  Don't be like the Pharisees and Sadducees who weren't satisfied with the Jesus they saw, talked with, and experienced.  Be satisfied to know Him for who He is, your God and Lord.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to surrender to your will and to be satisfied with who You truly are and not our own supposition of who we think You should be.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ:  Find a verse in Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, or Malachi that is a prophecy about Jesus.

(Leave it to Pat King to be extremely thorough.)

Zephaniah

     These verses refer to Christ's return and Judgement Day:
"For the day of the LORD is at hand. … And it shall come to pass at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and punish the men who are settled in complacency, who say in their heart, 'The LORD will not do good, nor will He do evil'" (1:7, 12).
"The great day of the LORD is near. … That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of devastation and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness. … I will bring distress upon men, and they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD" (1:14-17).

2. Haggai

Haggai 2:6-7 – refers to Christ's return
6 "This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the Lord Almighty.

3. Zechariah
There are a lot of prophecies regarding Jesus in this book, but I decided to go with one -Zechariah 12:10 - about the crucifixion.

"And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son."

4. Malachi

"But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings," Malachi 4:2

According to Jewish sages and tradition, this Sun of Righteousness referred to in Malachi's prophecy was understood to be the Messiah, who would have the power to heal who ever touched the tzit-tzit (fringes) on his garment. (see Matthew 9:20-22, Mark 5:25-34, and Mark 6:56)

So, if you're wondering what the tzit-tzit is, I looked it up for you. I am so good to you!.

"In Jesus' day, Jewish men wore a simple tunic both at home and at work. When appearing in public, they would cover their tunic with a large rectangular cloth which draped over the shoulder and fell to the ankles. This cloth was called a tallit and served as protection from cold and rain. Hanging from the end of each of its four corners (wings) was a tzitzit in obedience to the biblical command. The hem of this garment is actually made with fringes, or tassels (called tzitziyot, in Hebrew). These were required to be on the four corners of all clothing of Jewish men, in accordance with God's instruction. These tassels were to remind each Jewish man of his responsibility to fulfill God's commandments in Deuteronomy 22 :12 and Num.15:37-40. In fact, these tassels are tied into 613 knots to constantly remind Jewish men of the 613 laws of Moses, of which there are 365 prohibitions (The "thou shalt not" laws), and 248 affirmations (the "thou shall" laws). The knots also correspond with the ineffable name of God, the unspoken yod-hey-vav-hey, Yahweh."

Tomorrow I won't be home, so it'll be up to someone else to answer this.

DEVOTION:  Philippians 4:4-7

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Every time I read this I get a little bit something different out of it.  Today as I was reading it, I was struck by how Paul seems to be telling us to stay positive and joyful.  When I see the word "reasonableness" I think of someone who has a pleasant disposition, someone others like to be around, someone to whom people listen.

The NIV translates the word as "gentleness" which is a good word to use too.

You get the picture of one who has the Lord's will in mind and wants others to know the love of Jesus through  his words and actions.

If you're always crabby, always divisive, always critical, no one is going to be around you, except for those who love misery.

Someone on Facebook said something like this  the other day "Sometimes the best evangelism is telling people you're a Christian then NOT being a complete jerk."

I took that to heart.  I haven't always been the most loving caring, gentle, or reasonable pastor (especially early on in my ministry).  As I look back on my life, there are so many times that I wish I could take back when I was a complete jerk to people.

And so I take the passage from Philippians to heart as well and so should you!  Over the years I have continued to resolve to let my gentleness and reasonableness be evident to all.  I have become less judgmental.  And I most certainly pray A LOT more, as I have come to realize more and more that God the Holy Spirit is the one who changes hearts and minds, not me.

So I encourage you to be gentle and reasonable, bring your requests to God, and the God off peace will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus!

Prayer: Lord, please keep molding me into the servant you want me to be, that through my gentleness and reasonableness you may change hearts and minds to believe in you.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ: Who was Zephaniah?  (Again, Pat King knocks it out of the park.  I'm sure there was some googling involved, but that's ok.)

The name Zephaniah (Hebrew -- Tsephan-yah) means "Yahweh hides" or "Yahweh has hidden."

Zephaniah prophesied around 625 B.C., which makes him a contemporary of Jeremiah. Zeph. 1:1 identifies him as the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah. Many scholars believe that the "Hezekiah" referred to here, was King Hezekiah of the royal House of David, and one of Judah's most righteous kings. When Hezekiah died, it was Zephaniah's great uncle, Manasseh, and not his great grandfather, Amariah, who ascended the throne. Manasseh became the most corrupt king in Judah's history, reversing all the gains his father had made. He is also thought to be the king responsible for putting Isaiah to death.

But back to Zephaniah. Since his name means "hidden," many scholars believe that it refers to him having been "hidden" from Manasseh's atrocities. Others, however, insist this is not possible due to a lack of time from the days of King Hezekiah to the birth of Zephaniah.

Zephaniah's prophecy takes place during the reign of Josiah, the last good king that Judah had. However, like the reforms of Hezekiah, it appears that the hearts of the people are not really in Josiah's reforms. When hearts remain unchanged, outward improvements cannot last. Josiah, a devout man, does his best to get the nation back on the right track, so God promises not to bring judgment upon the land of Judah during his lifetime. It will be coming though, and the time is nearing. Zephaniah's prophecy deals with God's judgment upon His own people, followed by descriptions of divine judgment upon the surrounding nations, and finally a section dealing with the future hope of salvation under the Messiah which will be enjoyed by a remnant of the people.

Because of his stern denunciations of the sins of the people and his impassioned cries for repentance, some scholars have called him the 'puritan' prophet. And, taking a hint from Zeph. 1:12, artists of the Middle Ages represented Zephaniah as the man with the lamp, searching Jerusalem for sinners to bring them to punishment.

DEVOTION: Zephaniah 3:14-20

14 Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion;
    shout, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
    O daughter of Jerusalem!
15 The Lord has taken away the judgments against you;
    he has cleared away your enemies.
The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst;
    you shall never again fear evil.
16 On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
"Fear not, O Zion;
    let not your hands grow weak.
17 The Lord your God is in your midst,
    a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
    he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.
18 I will gather those of you who mourn for the festival,
    so that you will no longer suffer reproach.
19 Behold, at that time I will deal
    with all your oppressors.
And I will save the lame
    and gather the outcast,
and I will change their shame into praise
    and renown in all the earth.
20 At that time I will bring you in,
    at the time when I gather you together;
for I will make you renowned and praised
    among all the peoples of the earth,
when I restore your fortunes
    before your eyes," says the Lord.

What a difference 24 hours can make.  Yesterday I woke up cheerful and happy.  I had gotten enough sleep and was ready and raring to go.  Even though I was headed to do a funeral, which is a sad time, I was at peace knowing that David was indeed in the best place there is in heaven!

This morning I woke up crabby, because I didn't sleep well, and Gus was given me flack for me making him wear what he was supposed to wear for his basketball game today.  Cara has a toe that's all black and blue under her toenail and hurts really badly.  I forgot my phone at home and had to make the trek all the way back home to get it, because, as you all know, no one can live without a cell phone anymore.  My attitude with all of it hasn't been the greatest either.  I've been awful grumpy so far today.

Thank God that His promises don't change between those 24 hour periods.  His mercies are new every morning and they continue throughout the day!

Check out the promises in this passage.  Aren't they awesome?  He has taken away our judgments!  The KING OF ISRAEL, the LORD is in our midst and never again will we fear evil!  How extremely fascinating is that?

These terrorists, these enemies of ours, these who would cause trouble, WE DON"T NEED TO FEAR ANY OF THEM!  They may hurt us bodily, but that hurt will soon go away as we go into eternity with Jesus!  That cancer may hurt for a while, but it will not last.   Your loved one may go away from you into heaven for a while, but you will not be separated forever.

Have joy and rejoice in the promises of God!  All is not lost!  He has triumphed!  He has won the victory!  He is risen indeed!

Let us pray:  Lord, turn our frowns upside down as we rejoice in your precious and most certain promises.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S DAILY BIBLE QUIZ:  (Note: The rest of these for the rest of this year are in memory and in honor of Dianne Hance who faithfully answered this quiz daily!)

Who was Malachi and how many chapters does the book of Malachi have?

(Here's the answer from Pat King.)

1) There is not a single fact, in the Bible or elsewhere, regarding his ancestry or personal history. However, from the tenor of his prophecy, it is quite evident that he was most zealous in his devotion to Jehovah God, upholding His name and pure worship, and that he felt strong indignation toward those who profess to serve God but who serve only themselves. The name of Jehovah is mentioned 48 times in the four chapters of his prophecy.

His name in Hebrew is Mal·'a·khi′, which possibly means "My Messenger." The Hebrew Scriptures, the Septuagint, and the chronological order of the books all place Malachi last among the 12 so-called minor prophets. According to the tradition of the Great Synagogue, he lived after the prophets
Haggai and Zechariah and was a contemporary of Nehemiah. t

There are some people who don't think Malachi is a proper name. Since the name means "my servant" or "my messenger," there are some scholars who believe that these may be the prophesies of a prophet who is now anonymous because his name is lost to history.

The book itself – which is the last book of the twelve minor prophets, and the last book in the Old Testament – is 3 chapters long in the Hebrew Bible and in the Greek Septuagint. And 4 chapters long in the Latin Vulgate. It focuses largely on the corruption of the priests, the neglect of God's Temple, and the personal sins of the people. He was sent as a prophet sometime between 450 - 425 BC to Jerusalem at a time when the spiritual zeal of the people was at a low. Malachi ends his book with a prophecy concerning the coming Messiah and his forerunner, who was John the Baptist (called Elijah). In this way, the Old Testament ends looking toward what God would do in the New Testament.

The theme of his book is that the people had not learned the lessons that they should have learned from the Babylonian Captivity that had taken place shortly before the time of Malachi. The people were sent into captivity as punishment for their sins, and now they were doing the same things all over again. But Malachi finds hope in the coming Messiah who will make all things right because He comes with the power of God.
