DEVOTION: Mark 10:23-31 (ESV)

²³ And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" ²⁴ And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! ²⁵ It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God." ²⁶ And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, "Then who can be saved?" ²⁷ Jesus looked at them and said, "With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God." ²⁸ Peter began to say to him, "See, we have left everything and followed you." ²⁹ Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, ³⁰ who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. ³¹ But many who are first will be last, and the last first."

 

If you have money you can do anything, right?  You can buy what you want when you want it.  You can go where you want when you want to.  You can live how you want when, where, and how you want.  Everything is great, isn't it? 

 

Not so fast.  Jesus says, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle that for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God."  I thought rich people could do anything.  Why can't they enter into heaven?

 

Well, turns out that the price for entering heaven is perfection and no one can buy that, nor is it for sale.  Just last week we heard a rich young man who wanted to do something to inherit eternal life.  Jesus gave him something impossible to do to show him, and us, that it is impossible to do anything to inherit or earn heaven. 

 

Heaven is unattainable by mere humans doing mere human things.  You can't do enough or pay enough and neither can I.  There is no such thing as enough.  A camel can't go through the eye of a needle.  It's impossible.  The rich man didn't have the will or the mental capability of selling everything he had and giving it to the poor.  You, as willing as you may be, cannot and will not ever be perfect on this side of heaven. 

 

On the other hand, there was someone who took your place when it came to all of these things.  He lived as perfect life for you.  He died the death you couldn't die for you.  And he has risen from the dead.... also something you can't do on your own.  YES!  Jesus is your ultimate superhero.  All things are possible with God.  Let him be your superhero today!

Let us pray: Lord, as I try to do it all myself and as I worry about how good I am and take too much pride in the small amount of things I have accomplished and how I am better than everyone else, humble me, and show me that with me it is impossible, but not with you.  All things are possible with you.  Amen.

We could still use broccoli, and chili if you'd like to bring it.  Please let me know if you are.  
  
Also, we need some salads and desserts to round out the meal.  Let me know you are bringing those as well.

CHILDREN'S EVENT AT PUMPKINS GALORE THIS SATURDAY AT 11AM!!

All kids (and parents of course) in 5th grade and younger are invited to come out to Pumpkin's Galore located at 26415 South Stringtown Rd in Wright City.  We will be meeting there and parents are asked to stay with their children.  There will be a hayride, bounce house, horse drawn carriage ride, face painting, and a kid's train ride.  Each child will also receive a pumpkin that they can paint and take home.  The cost is $10 per child.  Please let Kelsey know you are coming by calling the church office at 456-2888 or emailing her at koverbeck@live.com

OPERATION BACKPACK FOR OCTOBER IS CANNED VEGETABLES!! !

Many children in our community are very poor.  They are able to get some of their meals at school during the week, but often go hungry on weekends.  Operation backpack is a way that our community has decided to help these kids. 
 
Every month throughout the school year, each church participating will take one food item and collect just that food item.  At the end of the month the food will be delivered to school.  The school officials along with volunteers will distribute the food to kids backpacks to take home.   

Throughout the month of October we will be collecting canned veggies. All size cans and even individual portions will be accepted.  The fruit will be delivered to the schools November 1.   We will have a box in the narthex for deposits.

DEVOTION:  Hebrews 4 (ESV)

4 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. ² For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. ³ For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,

"As I swore in my wrath,
'They shall not enter my rest,'"

although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. ⁴ For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: "And God rested on the seventh day from all his works." ⁵ And again in this passage he said,

"They shall not enter my rest."

⁶ Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, ⁷ again he appoints a certain day, "Today," saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,

"Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts."

⁸ For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. ⁹ So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, ¹⁰ for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

¹¹ Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. ¹² For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. ¹³ And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Some would argue that there is no point to church, to worship and especially to Bible study, but in this passage we see and hear that knowing the Scriptures and being in God's Word daily is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR LIFE!! 

 

I can't stress it enough.  All the pastors that I know say that they don't have enough people in worship or Bible study.  They don't care about the numbers because it makes them look better if they have a lot of people.  They care about the numbers, because they know that those who aren't in worship and Bible study are in grave danger.  They are in danger of losing their faith and being lost forever. 

 

It may not seem that serious to those who are in danger, but a little boy who runs out into the street doesn't feel like they are in any danger either, nor does a person who doesn't go to the doctor know that they are in danger of dying of cancer. 

 

I know I sound like a broken record, and I'm probably preaching to choir, but the message still needs to be known!  I urge you to get involved in a Bible study.  If you'd like to start a different one at church, I'd be more than happy to accommodate you.  If you have questions about something you are reading or studying in the Scriptures please ask!  And just be in the WORD in worship and out of worship! 

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to be continually in Your Word.  Amen.

OPERATION BACKPACK FOR OCTOBER IS CANNED VEGETABLES!! !

Many children in our community are very poor.  They are able to get some of their meals at school during the week, but often go hungry on weekends.  Operation backpack is a way that our community has decided to help these kids. 
 
Every month throughout the school year, each church participating will take one food item and collect just that food item.  At the end of the month the food will be delivered to school.  The school officials along with volunteers will distribute the food to kids backpacks to take home.   

Throughout the month of October we will be collecting canned veggies. All size cans and even individual portions will be accepted.  The fruit will be delivered to the schools November 1.   We will have a box in the narthex for deposits.

Family Night next Monday is Baked Potato Bar

Next Monday's family night is a Baked Potato Bar!!  YUMMY!! 
 
(Note: I may cook some hotdogs along with it.) 
 
 
The potatoes are already here:
 
Some of the toppings have already been spoken for including: shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, bacon, and chives.
 
We could still use broccoli, and chili if you'd like to bring it.  Please let me know if you are. 
 
Also, we need some salads and desserts to round out the meal.  Let me know you are bringing those as well.

DEVOTION:  Ecclesiastes 5:10-20 (ESV)

¹⁰ He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. ¹¹ When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? ¹² Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.

¹³ There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, ¹⁴ and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. ¹⁵ As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. ¹⁶ This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind? ¹⁷ Moreover, all his days he eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger.

¹⁸ Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. ¹⁹ Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God. ²⁰ For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.

 

Notice, that it doesn't say "He who HAS money...", but "He who LOVES money". 

 

God has given different gifts to different people.  To some he has given the gift of leadership, to others the gift of caring and encouragement, to others the gift of teaching, to others the gift of working with his hands, and to others the gift of wealth.  IT IS A GIFT FROM GOD as Solomon says very clearly in verse 19. 

 

It is the LOVE of money that is the root of all kinds of evil.  When you LOVE money more than you LOVE God, you are breaking the first commandment and you will never be satisfied with your money. 

 

So how do we keep from loving money?  GIVING IT AWAY, THAT'S HOW!  When you can freely give it as God has given it to you, then you know that money has not become your god.  If you can't give it and you depend on it for your happiness and contentment, that's when you know that it has become your god. 

 

I know many people who have been destroyed and many others who are being destroyed by their own love of money.  It has destroyed their relationships.  It has destroyed their reputation.  It has destroyed their joy and contentment.  As Solomon says, "Moreover, all his days he eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger."

 

If you are caught up in this love of money, I urge you to turn away from it!  REPENT!  If your money is causing you to have it as a god, give it away!  GIVE IT AWAY!  Don't let it cause you misery or discontentment anymore. 

 

Then let the love of Christ wash over you and dwell in you richly!  In Him you will find true satisfaction.  Even in the middle of struggle and uncomfortable physical circumstances you will have true peace.  Trust in the Lord!

 

Prayer: Lord, help me to realize that true contentment and satisfaction can only come from you and never will it come from wealth.  Amen.

CHILDREN'S EVENT AT PUMPKINS GALORE THIS SATURDAY AT 11AM!!

All kids (and parents of course) in 5th grade and younger are invited to come out to Pumpkin's Galore located at 26415 South Stringtown Rd in Wright City.  We will be meeting there and parents are asked to stay with their children.  There will be a hayride, bounce house, horse drawn carriage ride, face painting, and a kid's train ride.  Each child will also receive a pumpkin that they can paint and take home.  The cost is $10 per child.  Please let Kelsey know you are coming by calling the church office at 456-2888 or emailing her at koverbeck@live.com

HAYRIDE AND BONFIRE AT HEITGERD HOUSE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 6-10pm!!

WE WANT EVERYONE TO COME!!  Please make plans to do so!!  It's always a fun time to get to know your brothers and sisters in Christ better! 

 

Soda and water will be provided!  You can bring your own adult beverages (beer, wine, etc.) if you'd like.

DEVOTION: Psalm 119:9-16 English Standard Version (ESV)
⁹ How can a young man keep his way pure?
    By guarding it according to your word.
¹⁰ With my whole heart I seek you;
    let me not wander from your commandments!
¹¹ I have stored up your word in my heart,
    that I might not sin against you.
¹² Blessed are you, O Lord;
    teach me your statutes!
¹³ With my lips I declare
    all the rules^[a] of your mouth.
¹⁴ In the way of your testimonies I delight
    as much as in all riches.
¹⁵ I will meditate on your precepts
    and fix my eyes on your ways.
¹⁶ I will delight in your statutes;
    I will not forget your word.
 
 
How can a young man keep his way pure?"  What a good question, and one that should be pondered and answered by every young man (and woman for that matter) out there.  This one thing is of utmost importance.  If you want your young men and women to keep their way pure and to grow up to be God fearing men and women, then they ABSOLUTELY need to guard their way according to God's Word. 
 
That means BEING IN WORSHIP EVERY WEEK!  That means BIBLE STUDY ON A REGULAR BASIS!  That means PRAYING WITH AND FOR YOUR KIDS!  it mean YOU, AS A PARENT OR GRANDPARENT, BEING AN EXAMPLE OF GUARDING YOUR OWN WAY IN GOD'S WORD!!
 
The only problem is that most of the time young men and women have no interest in keeping their way pure.  They are too concerned with honing their abilities and skills so they can be successful in whatever they are pursuing; whether it be excellence in a sport, financial success and security, the biggest and best scholarships, that relationship with that special someone that they are infatuated with, etc. 
 
Don't get me wrong, all of those things are good in and of themselves, but when they are pursued without guarding their way according to God's Word, there will be no satisfaction in any of it.  There will always be something missing.  Those relationships will be empty.  Those trophies and awards will be fleeting and phony.  That promotion will be only be a highlight in a life of hard work with nothing real to show for it. 
 
It is the way of following God and His Word that provides true satisfaction, true rest, true security, and true life.  But don't believe me, believe God's Word! 
 
I urge you parents to rearrange your priorities.  If you have to be gone for one of those traveling teams on a Sunday morning, find a place of worship that meets on Saturday night or sometime during the week.  NEVER NEGLECT GOD'S WORD FOR YOUR FUN OR EVEN FOR YOUR DREAMS.  You will always regret it!
 
Keep your way pure by guarding it according to God's Word and trust and rest in his grace when you do! 
 
Prayer: Lord, help me to guard my way according to your Word.  Amen.
