The unnamed 20-year-old Italian boy had a problem.
It appears the Ferrari 458, which his father had given him, was not the year and model car he wanted. Sure, his super-rich dad had given the lad the ability to drive any of their 14 other high-end vehicles, but that wasn't what the boy wanted either.
Frustrated, the boy went to the Ferrari dealership to find out what his current car might be worth in a trade. It was another sad moment in his life. He was disappointed to be told his vehicle was valued at a paltry $193,500. It was hardly enough for him to purchase the newer model he wanted.
Even worse, with a miserly $5,000 to $10,000 monthly allowance, he knew it would take too long for him to save up for the new vehicle. The lad was confused and unsure how to proceed. The answer to the boy's dilemma was provided by the Ferrari salesman who suggested the young man set fire to the car and use the insurance money to buy the vehicle of his dreams.
The lad thought it was a grand idea. He recruited two of his friends, paid them a few dollars, and poof! -- the car was a charred wreck.
Now you may be surprised to find this out but insurance companies don't like to fork up a few hundred thousand dollars when a supercar burns up for no apparent reason. Their men investigated, the police assisted, and the arson plot between the boys was uncovered. That evidence was backed up by a security video, which clearly showed them setting fire to the car.
The court put all the fellows on probation.
When I read that story, I thought here is a boy that needs to read Colossians 3:17. He needs to hear, "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the Name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."
Then I thought, maybe I need to hear Colossians 3:17.
You see, there are far too many times in my life when I fail to give thanks to the Heavenly Father for the many blessings He has given me. Most certainly I ought to always be appreciative for the gift of a Savior whose life was offered up to forgive my sins and offer me salvation.
But my words and actions ought to show I am thankful for some of the smaller, less-mentioned gifts God has bestowed: you know, things like cell phones and microwave ovens and a car that starts on a really cold morning. I should be thankful for shoes that fit and Rocky Road ice cream and -- here you can fill in an item or two: _____________. I should give thanks because a grateful heart is proper when you have a Father who has given you so much.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, may my speech and actions show to the world I am thankful for Your innumerable gifts of love. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

As we read this verse we find ourselves asking the famous Lutheran question: "What does this mean?" What does it mean that we shouldn't use our freedom as an opportunity for the flesh?
We can relate to this as free citizens in the United States. We can use our citizenship in one of two ways. We can get and keep everything for ourselves, be miserly, hate those around us, and keep our faith and love to ourselves. That would be the first way. The second way would be to love our neighbors and serve them, love our family and care for them, forgive everyone who sins against us, and be as generous with what we have as God is generous toward us.
Paul, of course, prefers us to be the latter. He knows that the main purpose of a Christian is to share the love and forgiveness of Christ. He knows that when a person is loved they are so much more likely to be open to the good news of Jesus death and resurrection. He knows that it is a great and wonderful privilege to do the will of God on the earth. To be God's hands and feet and to be his messengers is quite an honor. And we should treat it as such.
There are also those, even among the members of St. John's, who use their freedom to say things like, "I don't have to go to church (worship) for God to love me." Or, "I don't have to give an offering to be a Christian." Are you one of those people? If you are, then I refer you back to Paul's words above. To go to worship is an act of love toward God, but even more at worship you truly receive God's love toward you. Likewise, when you give an offering it should be out of love for those who are lost, those who are in need, and for the church in general. It is so that the body of believers might be cared for and so that the number of the lost who are saved may grow!
I urge you in the same way Paul urged the believers in Galatia. Don't use your freedom in Christ to become a lazy and selfish Christian. Use your freedom to love and serve others. It is in that use of freedom that true joy and satisfaction is found.
Prayer: Lord help me to use my freedom the way you want me to use it. Amen.

If you were to name the top ten of the biggest superpowers the world has ever known, you would have to include Egypt in that list, although you'd never know it today. Oh, it is still a country, and they are still doing relatively well, but they are no longer rulers of much of anything. In fact, there seems to be continual upheaval and unrest there.
It used to be the ruler of the world. Throughout the Old Testament you can see that they were always near the top if not at the top. yet, God warned them, over and over again, to stop being so prideful, arrogant, and ruthless. He brought plagues against them to get his people out and to show his power over them.
This is a warning to us as well. When things are going well and everything seems to be working out for us, the first thing we need to do is praise and thank God for his goodness. The last thing we need to do is to think that we had anything to do with it.
The Lord wants us to remain humble, not because he is jealous or covetous, but because he wants us to keep from becoming so conceited that we forget Him or deny Him all together.
And lest you think that sort of thing doesn't happen, believe me, it does, every day! I have seen person after person who thinks that he or she doesn't need God or His gifts, that he isn't doing anything for them anyway, the worst of them deny that he even exists. All of this is because of the pridefulness of man.
I warn you to keep yourselves from becoming to prideful. Thank the Lord when he disciplines you and when you are going through more than you can bear, because through it and in it God is keeping you for himself. He is growing you in His grace. he is lifting you up in His arms and loving you as He wants.
Let us pray: Lord, keep us from becoming too conceited and prideful by whatever means necessary, but help us to remember to humble ourselves first so your discipline doesn't have to be so severe. Amen.

5 "Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: 'The Lord is our righteousness.'
When Jeremiah prophesied this he and the people who heard it were only thinking a few years out, seventy to be exact, when God would bring a remnant of the Jews back to Jerusalem and Judah. They were thinking only of their current physical circumstances. They had no idea that God's plans were so much greater and more important than that.
Through Jeremiah, the Lord God was proclaiming that he would send a Savior for the world for all time. He wouldn't just bring the Jews out of captivity from Babylon, he would bring all those who believe out of their captivity to sin. He wouldn't just cause the enemies of the Jews to be favorable toward them so they would let them go, he would totally and completely destroy the power of Satan.
Too often we have trouble looking past our current circumstance. We go from one circumstance, whether good or bad, to the next without ever dwelling on the big picture. We have a hard time seeing the whole forest for the dense trees that block our view.
What this requires is that we take a step back, take a deep breath, and take in God's Word, his sacraments, and his peace. If we want to better see the forest for the trees, the big picture of God's mercy, grace, salvation, and eternal life, then we need to get as much of God's gifts as possible.
If you like living moment to moment, crisis to crisis, and if you like feeling hurried and that life is spinning out of control, then stay away from worship, don't do daily devotions, don't pray, don't participate in the faith strengthening gifts that God gives you.
On the other hand, if you want peace, security, and joy in your life, then take advantage of Christ's gifts, fill yourself with them, and use them to his glory!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me your gifts. Help me to get as much of them as I can so I may live in peace and joy here on this earth, right here, right now. Amen.
