5 "Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: 'The Lord is our righteousness.'
When Jeremiah prophesied this he and the people who heard it were only thinking a few years out, seventy to be exact, when God would bring a remnant of the Jews back to Jerusalem and Judah. They were thinking only of their current physical circumstances. They had no idea that God's plans were so much greater and more important than that.
Through Jeremiah, the Lord God was proclaiming that he would send a Savior for the world for all time. He wouldn't just bring the Jews out of captivity from Babylon, he would bring all those who believe out of their captivity to sin. He wouldn't just cause the enemies of the Jews to be favorable toward them so they would let them go, he would totally and completely destroy the power of Satan.
Too often we have trouble looking past our current circumstance. We go from one circumstance, whether good or bad, to the next without ever dwelling on the big picture. We have a hard time seeing the whole forest for the dense trees that block our view.
What this requires is that we take a step back, take a deep breath, and take in God's Word, his sacraments, and his peace. If we want to better see the forest for the trees, the big picture of God's mercy, grace, salvation, and eternal life, then we need to get as much of God's gifts as possible.
If you like living moment to moment, crisis to crisis, and if you like feeling hurried and that life is spinning out of control, then stay away from worship, don't do daily devotions, don't pray, don't participate in the faith strengthening gifts that God gives you.
On the other hand, if you want peace, security, and joy in your life, then take advantage of Christ's gifts, fill yourself with them, and use them to his glory!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me your gifts. Help me to get as much of them as I can so I may live in peace and joy here on this earth, right here, right now. Amen.

There are plenty of people that, if I saw them coming toward me, I would hesitate to greet them, and even try to avoid eye contact. I may even walk the other way. I don't want to face them for any number of reasons. Maybe they hurt me and I am angry with them. Maybe I hurt them and they are angry at me. Maybe I hurt someone they love and they just don't have any love for me.
I have seen it and felt it many times in other people. For some it is because they haven't been to church in a long time and so they feel sheepish and guilty. When they see me they are embarrassed and they don't really want to face their guilt. Al I really want is for them to see that I love them and forgive them. All I really want is for them to come back home to Jesus where they belong and where God can feed them and fill them with himself.
I understand it completely. I have felt the shame and guilt of sins I have committed against others and the last thing I want to do is face them and face up to my sin. I want to ignore it, sweep it under the rug, and deny that it ever happened. It is very uncomfortable and painful to face up to our wrongs as well as it is to confront and deal with the wrongs of others toward us.
At the same time, if we don't deal with these grievances and hurts what will happen? Bitterness will grow. Anger will spill over into our other relationships. Resentment will cause us to break the eighth commandment and speak ill of the offender. Relationships will be hurt and even destroyed. And the worst possible thing that could happen is that one or both parties could lose their faith all together.
In the second letter to the Corinthian church, Paul is very explicit in dealing with the unrepentant and unforgiven sin in the congregation. He commands the offending parties to confess their sins and repent or when he comes he is going to have to deal with it severely. He will cast the unrepentant sinners out of the congregation. He will excommunicate them.
He doesn't want that. He wants reconciliation and restoration. yet, he knows that won't happen until the sin is confronted and dealt with in God's way. It's not something that can be ignored. it can't simply be forgotten. It needs to be realized and acknowledged, dealt with and done away with.
I urge you, in fact I command you in the name of Jesus to confess your sins to one another, repent of your sins, and give them to God so that times of reconciliation, and restoration can come. So that you can live in peace and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another, especially those against whom you have sinned, and those who have sinned against you, with a holy kiss, a handshake, or even a hug. Tell them that their sin is forgiven!
Prayer: Lord, you command us to forgive and be forgiven. You command us to confess and repent. Make us do what you command. Amen.

As I think about my life as a pastor the things that I remember the most are my failures, and I've had plenty of them. I haven't been as caring as I should have. I certainly struggle with patience. I have broken the eighth commandment very publicly. I have hurt members. I have been lazy at times. I could go on and o n, but you don't want to hear any more of that, I'm sure.
In a way, I am thankful for remembering these things. These remembrances keep me humble. They remind me that I am only a flawed, sinful struggling human being, and that all the good that comes from me is not my doing at all, but only God's doing.
We aren't exactly sure what Paul's "thorn in the flesh" his "messenger from Satan" was. It could've been an actual physical problem. It could've been a temptation that he continually fell into. It could've been any number of things. I tend to imagine that it was more of a spiritual nature, a reminder of his past offenses. That messenger of Satan creeps up on all of us from time to time to keep us from becoming conceited. When we realize our faults and failures and even when we remember some from very long ago, it's ok. It isn't fun. It isn't comfortable. Yet, it is always a good reminder that God's strength is made perfect in our weakness and when we are weak then we are strong.
Don't cover up your weaknesses and flaws. Don't try to hide them or hide from them. Instead, use them as part of your witness to Christ by whom and through whom all of that weakness, fault, and failure is forgiven! Boast in your weakness so that Christ may shine through you!
Let us pray: Lord, thank you for humbling me when I need it and for shining through me. Amen.

In 1734 Antonio Stradivari made a violin.
Today, in various states of repair, there are approximately 550 of those instruments still around. One of them, a good one, was owned by a concert violinist, Roman Totenberg. When Totenberg bought the violin in 1943, he paid $15,000 for it. Translated into today's dollars, that's about $200,000.
It was the only violin he played, until 1980 when he left the instrument in his office while he shook hands with some well-wishers after a concert. When Totenberg came back to his office, the Stradivarius had disappeared.
He told his family it was "like losing an arm."
A report was filed; possible suspects were considered; the police made a search, and then -- when hope was gone -- Totenberg gave up, bought another violin, and finished out his life. He died three years ago at the age of 101.
That might have been the end of the story, but it isn't.
This past June a lady went to a New York instrument dealer to have her deceased husband's violin appraised. The dealer immediately recognized the instrument as a Stradivarius and, after further investigation, identified it as the stolen violin.
He called the police.
When confronted, the woman -- who knew nothing of its history -- voluntarily gave the violin to the FBI, which have returned it to the Totenberg family, who were incredibly thankful.
Now you who are regular Daily Devotion readers think you know where this lesson is going.
You probably are thinking I am going to speak about the similarities between the theft of Totenberg's violin and Satan's theft of our souls. That would be a possible comparison, but I'm not going that way. That's because the Totenberg violin was rediscovered by accident, and it was gladly returned. In contrast, the recovery of our souls was a definite plan of the Lord and to bring us home, God's Son, our Savior, gave His life to redeem us.
No, we can't go that way.
What I would like to talk about in this devo is the rest of the story. The rest of the story is this: Totenberg's three daughters have decided they are going to have the violin cleaned up and then they are going to sell it to some violinist who is worthy of the instrument.
That, my friends, is not what our Heavenly Father is going to do with those souls, which have been returned to Him through Jesus' sacrifice. No, He is going to keep those souls forever. Jesus said nobody will ever steal us away from His Father's hands (see John 10:29).
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks that Jesus has paid the ransom price which has returned the souls of believers to the Heavenly Father. I pray the whole world may know the security of the Father's love and grace. In Jesus' Name I pray it. Amen.

LAST TIME'S QUIZ: What did God tell Ezekiel to do to show the Israelites that they would soon be going into exile?
"During the daytime, while they watch, , bring out your belongings packed for exile. Then, in the evening, while they are watching, go out like those who go into exile. While they watch dig a hole through the wall and take your belongings out through it. Put them on your shoulder as they are watching and carry them out at dusk. Cover your face so that you cannot see the land, for I have made you a sign for the house of Israel." Ezekiel 12:3-6

LUTHERANS FOR LIFE NEEDS YOUR HELP
Due to some unfortunate circumstances, Thrivent is no longer financially supporting Lutherans for Life. This was a huge portion of their yearly income. Therefore they are in need of your help. They need the congregations and individuals within the congregations who support Lutherans for Life to give an extra offering to them to replace the funds that Thrivent has taken away.
Yesterday we had a door offering for this cause and many of you gave generously! Thank you! If you weren't here or were unable to give yesterday you can still give. Just go to www.LutheransforLife.org and click on the "Give" tab. You can also find all the information you need to know on their website.
