"Our Final Farewells" 
May 7, 2015  
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

People die. That is a fact.

It is also a fact that those who are left behind, wishing to show respect for the dearly departed and desiring to do their best to provide a good afterlife for the deceased, have developed many interesting customs.

* In some Asian countries Joss Paper, fake counterfeit money, is burned so the dead person may have cash in the afterlife.

* Ancient Greeks put Charon's Obol, a coin, inside the mouth of the deceased. The money was to pay for a safe passage from the world of the living to the realm of the dead.

Last month China's Ministry of Culture has said it is going to try and change one common funeral practice of the people. In China it is believed a large funeral crowd is a good sign for a person's afterlife. The more people who attend a funeral, the better it will be for the deceased.

Problems in funeral attendance arise when a person has outlived all his family and friends, or when he was a dislikable individual, or when he wasn't very well known. The funerals for such people are very lonely events. To prevent such an embarrassing situation, the inventive Chinese have found a solution. No, they don't hire professional mourners like they did during the days of Jesus. That would be too simple, too boring.

To solve the problem of an unattended funeral, the Chinese are hiring strippers and pole dancers.

That's right. For about $322, a family can purchase the services of some very sexy dancers whose performances are guaranteed to increase the public's attendance at the final farewell festivities of a family member or friend.

For any number of reasons, it is not likely we will see that custom being embraced by the members of the Christian church in North America. The most important of those reasons is this: when a believer falls asleep in the Lord, they are given everything they need for eternal life.

Because of Jesus' successful substitution for us, because He has won forgiveness and salvation for us, there are no fees which need to be paid; no demons to be avoided; no skids which need to be greased to provide a blessed eternity.

Because of Jesus we have been washed, we have been sanctified and justified by the Redeemer and the Holy Spirit. There is simply nothing to be done by those who are going. And for those who are left behind? We can thank the Lord for all He has done to give us a blessed eternity.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks my eternal happiness is not dependent on me, my mourners, or any gifts placed in my casket. May I always show my appreciation for the forgiveness and salvation Jesus has won for me. In His Name I pray it. Amen.

If you have never been involved in one of our church activities (and even if you have), here is a new challenge for you!!  There will be a cake/dessert booth at the carnival on September 12!  The carnival will be open from 11am until dusk!  Donations of baked good and workers to man the booth will be needed!!  Desserts needing refrigeration cannot be accepted.  Work shifts will be for two hours beginning at 10am and will go till closing time.  To eliminate many, many phone calls, a sign up sheet has been placed on the narthex where you can volunteer!!

For JANE KESSEL (Freddie's wife) as she continues to recover from congestive heart troubles.

 

For DAVE KOHRS who has stopped receiving chemo treatments and has placed himself on hospice care.

 

For BONNIE FRENZIA who is at home and continuing to recover. .

 

For OUR DCE INTERN, KELSEY OVERBECK, that the Lord moves a congregation in need of her abilities to call her into full time DCE ministry.

 

For DAVE TINNIN'S MOM, JANE, as she continues to recover from several strokes and seizures.
 
For WILMA WEIGLE as she is having a lot of difficulty with congestion and possible pneumonia. .

DEVOTION:  "Show me your way, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God, my Savior and my hope is in you all day long.  Psalm 25:4-5
 
As we pray this prayer we have to be willing to surrender to it.  It is easy to say these words and even to know what God's will is.  It is another thing to let him actually do what you ask him to do in these verses.  
 
For God to teach you his ways he is going to have to challenge your ways and your ideas of things.  He is not going to let you sit in ignorance.  He is not going to conform his ways to the ways of the world.  You are going to have to surrender to what his word says totally or the above passage will not come to pass in the way it should. 
 
If you want God to guide you, you need to know that he isn't always going to guide you the easy way.  it isn't always going to be sunshine, roses, and rainbows.  There are going to be hard times.  Usually these hard times are to get you out of your comfort zone and to keep you from being too self righteous and independent.  In these times you will begin to realize how much you actually do rely on God for everything in life, even your very breath. 
 
Are you getting my drift?  Learning is hard.  It requires sacrifice.  It requires patience.  it requires surrender. 
 
So when you pray this prayer expect results, but only if you are willing to go and do what he wants you to do!!
 
Prayer: Lord God, teach me your paths and guide me into your truth for you are my Savior all day long!  Amen.

 Please rejoice with Melissa that the Lord has granted this call to Melissa to be a teacher in Fort Dodge, Iowa.  She has been awaiting this call for a long time. 
 
She will be with us to play organ till the end of July.

DEVOTION:  Sometimes you just have to let God's Word speak for itself.  Anything I would add to today's reading would lessen it.  So here it is.  Enjoy being reminded of the majesty and omniscience of the Lord!

Search Me, O God, and Know My Heart

139 O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
² You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you discern my thoughts from afar.
³ You search out my path and my lying down

NURSERY HELPERS NEEDED FOR ONCE A MONTH DURING WORSHIP

Do you like little children?  Do you like to hold babies?  Do you want to help out our many young families that are joining church?   Here's your chance!

 

We currently need just one more person to have enough for each person on our list to work once a month during our 11am service.

 

We could use two or three more for the 8:30 service!!

 

You don't have to be a mom to do this.  You just have to love kids and be able to take care of them for an hour on Sunday morning.

If you have never been involved in one of our church activities (and even if you have), here is a new challenge for you!!  There will be a cake/dessert booth at the carnival on September 12!  The carnival will be open from 11am until dusk!  Donations of baked good and workers to man the booth will be needed!!  Desserts needing refrigeration cannot be accepted.  Work shifts will be for two hours beginning at 10am and will go till closing time.  To eliminate many, many phone calls, a sign up sheet has been placed on the narthex where you can volunteer!!

DEVOTION: "I rejoiced with those who said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord."  Psalm 122:1
 
Yesterday, I was at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, MN to see my nephew Isaac confirm his faith!  It was wonderful to be in worship yesterday, to see church full of people, to worship with all of my family, to sing familiar hymns and songs in an unfamiliar place, to hear God's Word, and to even hear a former classmate of mine preach God's Word to us all.  I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord!"
 
Last Sunday I was able to see my own daughter along with seven other kids that I have watched grow up confirm their faith.  I was able to hear them talk about what their faith means to them and how great God is to them.  I was able to worship with many of my brothers and sisters in Christ here in Warrenton, sing some great hymns, and receive the Lord's Supper. 
 
While these were two extra special worship services in the last two weeks, every Sunday is special.  It is special because we get to go to the house of the Lord!  We get to worship a God who loves us so much that he sent his only Son to die for us.  We get to worship with many other people who love us.  We get to receive Christ in His Word and Sacraments.  In summary, we get JESUS!
 
If you've been neglecting worship lately, and by the looks of things many of you have been, I urge you to consider why you've been neglecting it, repent of it, and turn back to God so that you can be glad along with all of your brothers that you can go to the house of the Lord! 
 
Prayer: Make us to rejoice that we get to go to the house of the Lord!  Amen.

DID YOU HAVE FUN WITH THE TRAVELING FELLOWWSHIP GROUP AT THEIR LAST EVENT? 

Well the next trip is already in the works!  They will be taking a trip to Rocheport and Arrow Rock, MO on August 22!!  They will have dinner at the J. Huston Tavern in Arrow Rock and then enjoy the play "Driving Miss Daisy" at the Lyceum Theater.  Cost will be determined by number of people going.  It should run between $60 and $70 per person.  Sign up soon as there seems to be a lot of interest.
