When I was younger I never wanted to rest. I always wanted to go, go, go! I couldn't wait to get my driver's license so I could go. Before that I couldn't wait to get on my bike with my friends and go. Even before that I couldn't wait to get up and start to walk. I wanted to go.
Now, as my body aches at times, and as my mind is spinning with all sorts of thoughts (good and bad) and ideas (good and bad) and as the cares of this world seem to build up one after another, all I want to do is rest.
The trouble is that I, and I'm sure you as well, look for rest in all sorts of ways other than the one true way. We look for rest in a T.V. remote. We look for rest in scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed. We look for rest in all sorts of unacceptable and useless ways.
I have learned, from this verse and countless others in Scripture, that there is only one place to find true REST, and that is in JESUS! Jesus and rest go together. When all else fails, and all else will fail, there is only one place to turn. Our souls find rest in GOD ALONE! OUR SALVATION COMES FROM HIM!
Too often we make Christianity a religion of works. Do this and don't do this. Be this way. Live this way. Be good. Go to church. Volunteer on a board. Serve on this committee. Put in so many hours and you're good...... right? WRONG. Your soul finds rest in God alone and your salvation come from him!
Gospel rest is a most wonderful thing! Gospel salvation is a glorious thing! Live in that Gospel rest. Know that you are truly FORGIVEN OF ALL YOUR SINS!
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, make me find rest in you alone. Amen.

Very few of us have ever been involved in an earthquake or a tsunami, maybe you have and you know how scary it is. Even if you haven't, you can at least sort of imagine how harrowing and terrifying it may be. Imagine, as it says in this passage, mountains crumbling to the ground and falling into the sea. Imagine the tidal wave that such a thing would create by such a huge earthquake. Imagine how much your house would shake and how you would be terrified that it would all crumble around you.
Ok, enough of that. Now imagine how calm you would be in the middle of it all, because you know that whether you live or you die you belong to the Lord who is your refuge and strength and ever present help in trouble.
You may not have immediate life or death circumstances going on right now, but you may have things that are really bothering you. Maybe it is a health diagnosis. Maybe it is a relationship gone sour. Maybe it is a career decision. Whatever it is, you can know that the Lord God is an EVER PRESENT HELP IN TROUBLE! He will help you through it. He will guide you! He will let you know that whether you change jobs or stay in the same one, he will bless it because it will be done in faith. He will guide you in the way of reconciliation in your troubled relationships. He will give you that peace that passes all understanding in knowing that whether that health diagnosis is a death sentence or not, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord, and he will take us to be with him forever!
One thing I do want you to know, as the Lord's representative for St. John's, I am here for you. When you are struggling with anything, I am here to pray with you, to give you God's grace, and His Words of comfort. It is my greatest pleasure to be able to do so. Please call, text, email, or Facebook Message any time you have a need! I want to remind you that the Lord is your refuge and strength and an ever present help in trouble!
Peace be with you!
Prayer: Lord God, remind us daily that you are present with us and for us wherever and whenever we go to help us through every situation and to give us your peace. Amen.

As you read the above passage today, it seems like David is having a manic episode. He goes from despair to rejoicing in an instant.
Yet, as you think of your own life, you may notice that you often do the same thing. You go from being totally depressed, to completely ecstatic, back to completely ruined all in one day. It all depends on your circumstances.
It shouldn't though. Your life, your mood, your day really only depends on one thing, the love of Jesus Christ your Savior. David knew that and so he was able to snap out of his funk. He went from wondering if God was ever going to relent and relieve his suffering. He was suffering the consequences of his sin. God had told him that the sword would never depart from his house, because he had used to sword against Uriah to take Uriah's wife Bathsheba for himself. At the same time, he knew that God had spared him the eternal death he really deserved. So, in the midst of an intense battle with members of his own family he is able to praise God for his goodness to him.
As we learned yesterday, we need to look at our conflicts as opportunities to honor God. Think of the conflicts going on in your life today. How can you honor God in and through those conflicts? How can you thank and praise God even in the midst of that conflict? How can you share the love of Christ?
If you are in the midst of a funk because of your conflict, SNAP OUT OF IT!! Christ is STILL risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
Prayer: Lord, snap me out of my bad mood, and my pity party! Give me courage to face my conflicts with the grace you have given me and the forgiveness won by your Son Jesus on the cross. Amen.
