ST. JOHN'S MISSION STATEMENT
As the body of Christ, we strive to make disciples of all, focusing on the next generation, through growing...
UP in God's Word and Sacrament
OUT into the community by caring for physical and spiritual need
TOGETHER in fellowship to build lasting relationships in Christ

DEVOTION:

Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me.  'What is his name?'  Then what shall I tell them?"  God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM.  This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM sent me to you."  Exodus 3:14-15

A lot of times I think that, because we don't see God face to face and we don't have His full presence right before us, we are a bit more bold to talk to him in such a way as to bring him down to our level.   We don't really know him in all the fullness off his glory and majesty.  We don't fear Him as we would if we saw Him in all His power.  We hear the folks who wrote the Scripture talk about His majesty and glory and try to explain it, but it is so far past our understanding that we don't really even try to fathom it.

This is both good and bad.  It is good in that we can go to him like a child can go to his dad.  It is like if your dad was the CEO of a huge company  and had all this great and awesome power to run this company and all the people that worked for this company were fearful of him, but you just knew him as the loving dad that he was to you.

It is bad in that we often try to bring Him down to our level and don't give Him the honor and respect he is due.  It is also bad in that we don't always regard His Word and His Will as the absolute truth that it is.

Moses didn't know God.  He had never worshiped God.  He had no idea who God was.  Turns out that the voice he was speaking to in that burning bush was the great I AM.  He was and is YAHWEH!!

The Hebrew word for I AM is YAHWEH!  He still is and always will be!  He is eternal!  He is the I AM!  Honor Him like He is with your whole life!

Prayer:  Lord, make me to treat you with the respect, honor, and love that you deserve so that I may grow in my relationship with you like I should.  Amen.

"Just Our Secret"
January 21, 2015

rainbow, cross... We who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a Forerunner on our behalf .... Hebrews 6:18b-20a
Having received threats that promised a long, legal battle, the City Council in Grand Haven, Michigan, has voted to take the 48-foot cross, which stands on a hill overlooking their city, and convert it to an anchor.

The reactions to the decision are mixed:

* Some are upset to see this symbol of the Savior being removed and reduced.

* Others are rejoicing that one more "illegal" Christian image has been disposed of.

It's that second group, the ones who think they've won a victory by turning the cross into an anchor; those are the ones who are making me smile. I'm smiling because they haven't won a victory at all. All they have done is substituted one Christian symbol for another.

Let me explain. If you examine the graves of the first Christian martyrs you will find many are decorated with a symbol.

That symbol is not the cross; it is an anchor.

In those early days of persecution, using passages like the one from above, Christians let other believers know their faith was anchored in the Lord Jesus Christ. On their graves they made a very quiet, albeit public proclamation, that in all the storms which had swirled around them, the anchor of faith had kept them confident in Jesus, who had won their salvation.

I guess it's not so very different today.

We also are living in a time when Christians are being persecuted. The world still hates Jesus. It detests His sacrifice and despises the victory He has won for us. To keep the story of salvation from spreading, they are banning our symbols, banning the sharing of Scripture, and doing their best to push Jesus back into His empty tomb.

Folks, after watching what happened in Grand Haven, you have to admit, these guys who want the cross taken down are pretty good at what they do.

That being said, we also have to acknowledge they may be good at taking the cross down, but the Holy Spirit is even better at making sure God's people can clearly see their crucified and risen Redeemer. Take down the cross, the Lord will put up an anchor. Cross or anchor makes no difference to us, they both point with pride to our living Lord Jesus.

So, as the anti-Christian-crosses-in-public-places people are congratulating themselves in their victory at Grand Haven, Michigan, I hope the Christians of that community will also rejoice and say to everyone who drives through their beautiful town, "See that anchor up on the hill? It says our faith is anchored in Jesus, who gives us hope and salvation."

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks the Holy Spirit confuses and confounds the proud people of this world. Grant that I may always be a person of faith, a person who is anchored in Jesus Christ, my Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

DEVOTION:
"So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed.  Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father's household with food, according to the number of their children."  Genesis 47:11-12

After you forgive someone how should you treat him?  Should you still treat him with contempt?  Should you forgive but not forget?  Should you still treat him like dirt to make him pay for what he did?  Should you make him remember what he did every day for the rest of his life?  Should you bring it up every time he gets a little "too" comfortable?

Of course all of these are a big fat NO!

The best earthly example we have of this is in the passage above.  Joseph could've made his brothers his slaves.  He could have brought it up every time he saw them.  He could've treated them like dirt for the rest of their lives.  Instead, he showered them with love and with gifts.  he showed them he loved them.  he didn't just SAY that he forgave them, he actually showed them that all was in the past and that the future looked wonderful for all of them.

The best heavenly example we have of this is how Jesus acts toward us.  He doesn't bring our sins up over and over again.  He doesn't make us pay.  He doesn't hold bitterness and hatred against us for the hell he had to suffer for us.  He showers us with His gifts of love, mercy, and grace!

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, thank you for truly forgiving us.  Thank you for not holding our sins against us anymore.  Help me to appreciate that more and more each day.  Amen.

____________________________________________________________________________________________
DEVOTION:  The said to one another, "Surely we are being punished because of our brother.  We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that's why this distress has come upon us.   Genesis 42: 21-22

Karma.  It's a word that is often used to describe the "bad luck" that people face because off something they've done wrong.  We think of it as what's coming to someone who's harmed us.  It's some sort of vengeance from God, or from nature, or whatever.

The trouble is that it isn't a real thing.  It isn't true.  And here's why.  If what the sons of Jacob said was true, the punishment would have actually come.  They would have died in their sins.  Yet, the story continues that Joseph has mercy on them.  He doesn't treat them as their sins deserve.  Yes, they do have to go back and forth and convince their dad to let Benjamin come up with them.  Yes, they do spend twenty years in severe guilt, probably having nightmares about what they did to Joseph and how he pleaded with them to let him go.  They deserved to go through the same hell he did.  But they didn't.

Just the opposite happened.  Joseph forgave them and he saved them from certain death due to the severe drought and famine they were experiencing.  He saved them even though they treated him like a dog.  He saved them even though they left him to be a slave and to suffer at the hands of foreigners.  He had mercy and grace on them.

In the same way God has mercy on us.  He doesn't give us as our sins deserve.  He doesn't let karma rain down on us.  He doesn't send us to hell.  Just the opposite.  He saves us!  Even though we continue to sin against him.  Even though we were guilty of putting him to death just as much as the people who shouted "Crucify him.  Crucify him."  He still gives us more grace!

So the next time you think God is punishing you for being bad, or the next time you wonder what you did to deserve whatever it is you are going through, remember that God doesn't give you as your sins deserve.

Yes, the consequence of sin is death.  Yes, sometimes the trouble you go through is a direct result of the sin you committed.   If you kill someone you will probably go to jail.)  If you spend more money than you have and don't pay your bills you may get your car repossessed.  If you don't go to church like you should you will drift further and further away from Almighty God.   But that's not God getting you back.  It's not God being vengeful.  It is simply the result of being a sinner.   It is the result of you doing what God told you not to do or not doing what he told you to do.

Still he doesn't send you to hell.  he doesn't let you rot forever.  He saves you from it.  He gives more grace.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to realize that the troubles I am gong through are not you getting me back for my sin, but only my own doing and a result of me simply being a sinner from birth.  Help me to recognize and understand your grace more and more each day.  Amen.
