Our church body's response to the trouble in Ferguson

Below is a letter from our Missouri District President concerning Ferguson.  When things calm down and rebuilding begins, I may be bringing a group of willing individuals down to Ferguson to help in whatever way the churches and the community needs help.  Not sure when it will be, but I will keep you posted.  Let me know if you'd like participate in such efforts.

November 26, 2014

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Members of LCMS Congregations, Lay Leaders, Principals, Teachers, All Commissioned Workers and Pastors,

After a night of the worst kind of behavior in Ferguson, beyond what most of us could have imagined, the only one to whom to turn is our heavenly Father. Psalm 91, as do many other Psalms focuses our attention on Him who alone is the answer to all that has happened. God alone has all power, all-knowledge, is always present and is ruler over all.
Psalm 91
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."
3 Surely he will save you
from the fowler's snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, "The LORD is my refuge,"
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation."
The New International Version. 2011 (Ps 91). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
Psalm 91 is for Ferguson, North St. Louis County, the peace keepers, Brown family and those who believe looting, burning, and shooting is the answer to all that has happened since this past August. In this case it is fairly obvious taking matters into our own hands does not resolve the issues that trouble us. Instead, all of us need to depend upon God Almighty who promises, ". . . I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation." (Ps. 91:14-16 NIV)
You and I are not helpless. Our lives are anchored in Christ. We have the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, as Disciples of Jesus Christ, I encourage you to become engaged using the gifts His Father has given you:
1. Pray for the political leaders and peace keeping forces. Give them wisdom, proper restraint, protection and genuine concern for all citizens.
In their time of grief and mourning, pray for the Brown family. Ask God to give them peace, comfort and healing.
Pray for the City of Ferguson, especially the many, many long-time residents who have before their very eyes seen their city dramatically change in a matter of weeks. Give them patience, hope, wisdom and peace.
Pray God to bless His powerful Word and those who proclaim it. Ask Him to raise up and strengthen the spiritual leaders of greater St. Louis, but especially North St. Louis County. Ask Him to equip them with His right, good and powerful Word to address the evil that has gripped their community and people.
2. Be slow to speak and even slower to become angry. A gentle word bears much fruit. Become a Gospel voice through your own words and actions. Find ways to support those striving to restore order, enforce the law, minister to the hurting, and provide basic necessities of life to those who are currently finding it difficult to obtain them.
3. Become engaged and supportive of rebuilding the City of Ferguson.
4. Send financial gifts to the Missouri District for the support of the people and needs of Ferguson.
You and I can do much through Him who provides all we need. May God use us to be a blessing! Psalm 91: 2 says, "I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
The peace of God which is beyond all understanding keep our hearts and minds in the true faith to life everlasting. AMEN
In The Service of Jesus Christ,
Rev. Dr. Ray G. Mirly
President, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod

DEVOTION:  Luke 6:27-36
27 "But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
32 "If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

I don't know what to make of things going on in Ferguson and the surrounding communities.  It is just sad.  I'm just saddened and angered by evil.  Evil will take every opportunity to do more evil and to get others to do evil.  There is more than enough evil to go around.  There is terror on every side.  There are people who know nothing of God, or grace, or forgiveness, or repentance.

I learned a long time ago that you can't make people do what they are supposed to do.  You can't make people be good.  You can't make people believe in Jesus. Jesus himself couldn't do it, why do we think that we can?  And no amount of new laws, National Guard presence, right verdict, or anything at all is going to stop evil on the earth, Nothing but the love of JESUS!

The question for you is how are you going to react?  Are you going to react in hate, anger frustration, racism, fear?  I have read some comments on Facebook already and I am ashamed at some of the comments made by supposedly Christian people.  As Christians we are called to be people of justice, peace, and grace.  We don't tolerate evil or excuse it, but we also don't take vengeance and we don't act out in hate or anger toward anyone.

We pray, and pray, and pray, and pray.  We do good to those who hate us.  We bless those who curse us.  We give our cloak to those who need to take out tunic.  Lend, and do good, and expect nothing in return.

I know it is hard.  It is hard for me too.  I can't stand to see evil win, ever.  But God has called us to something greater.  He has called us to live in the world but not be of it.  He has called us to bring grace and peace into every situation.

Make no mistake, justice will be done.  GOD'S JUSTICE!  He will bring ultimate justice to those who do wrong and do not repent and believe.  Pray that those looting, and burning, and shooting, and whatever else repent so that they don't suffer the ultimate punishment of hell forever.  Pray that those who have done this junk will pay honestly for their actions according to the law so that they are caused to repent and turn from their sins.  Pray for yourself that you react according to God's will and that our conversations and your actions will be seasoned with grace and love.

Let us pray:  Lord, bless the law enforcement in Ferguson that they would remain safe and none get injured or killed.  Turn the hearts of all sinners to repentance and forgiveness.  Do Your justice in this and may Your will be done so that even through this more and more may come to know you as Savior and Lord for the day of salvation.  Amen.

"
Good Question"
November 24, 2014
Daily Devotions, fall, leavesWhen I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him? Psalms 8:3-4
When President Theodore Roosevelt and his friends were at his home in Sagamore Hill, after an evening of conversation they would go out on the front lawn and search the skies until they found the faint spot of light mist beyond the lower left-hand corner of the Great Square of Pegasus.

Then Roosevelt, or someone else in the party, would recite, "That is the spiral galaxy in Andromeda. It is as large as our Milky Way. It is one of 100 million galaxies. It consists of 1 billion suns, each larger than our sun."

Then Roosevelt would grin and say, "Now I think we are small enough! Let's go to bed."

This past week I was, like Roosevelt, reminded how small we are.

That was because the U.S. Space Agency has announced that Voyager 1 has entered interstellar space. And why did that bit of news make me feel small? Simple, Voyager 1 was launched in 1977, when I was not yet 30 years old. For the last 36 years the probe has been chugging along at 38,000 miles an hour.

It is now 12 billion miles from the sun.

As the psalmist said, "When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him?"

Good question, and it is a question for which no one has a logical answer.

All anyone can say is this: in His power the Lord brought into being all that is and ever will be. In His wisdom He put humankind in charge of His perfect creation and then, after our sin, in His grace, He decided to save us.

Unbelievable!

The Lord who had made 100 million galaxies, with each composed of 1 billion suns, has decided that He was willing to send His Son into this world to carry our sins and die the death we deserved. Now, because the Lord is mindful of us, all who are brought to faith in the risen Redeemer are forgiven and granted eternal life.

Which leads us to the conclusion: the universe is an impressive thing, but God's grace is more so.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, in Your grace You sent Your Son to seek and save sinners. Forgive humankind when they think they know, understand and are empowered to judge You. Let us see how small we are, how great You are, and how much we need You. This I pray in Jesus' Name. Amen.
