DEVOTION: The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.  He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.  Come and see the place where he lay.  Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee.  There you will see him.'  Now I have told you."  So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy.  The Story, p. 383

The women were the first ones to the tomb that day.  They were sad, as any mourners would be, and even more so, because their dreams were shattered and their best friend and teacher was gone.

Even though Jesus told them several times that he would rise three days later, they couldn't get past what they saw just two days earlier.  They saw him beaten beyond recognition.  They saw a crown of thorns on his head.  They saw his hands and feet nailed to a cross.  They saw him cry out and take his last breath, and they saw them take his lifeless body down off the cross.  He was definitely dead.  As far as they knew that was the end.  There was no coming back from the dead.  No one had done it before.

But wait.....  Where was the body?  They had come to anoint it with burial spices and perfumes (Note: There were no funeral homes to send the body.  The family and friends took care of the body themselves.)  But it was gone.  Who could have done such a thing?  Who could have taken the body of their friend?

Then the angel appeared and changed their lives forever with 10 simple words "He is not here.  He has risen, just as He said!"

These same words either can change your life, if you have not yet believed, or have changed your life if you do believe.  They always do!  How have they changed your life?  Have they given you hope and strength?  Have they given you peace in the midst of great pain and suffering?  Have they taken your guilt, destroyed it, and replaced it with God's mercy and grace?

Or maybe you have been a Christian so long that you have taken these words for granted.  Maybe these words haven't had an effect on you for quite some time.  Even the best of Christians (as if there is such a thing) can have times of spiritual complacency.  Anyone can have a time where their faith doesn't really matter too much to them.... until they need it.

My friends, YOU NEED YOUR FAITH TODAY!!  You need it every day!  You need the knowledge and certainty of Christ's resurrection!  You need to know that He is no longer in the tomb, that He is alive!  And so does everyone around you!  Embrace it!  Cling to it!  Be reminded of it!  Live in it!

Let us pray:  Lord God help us to not be complacent when it comes to our faith, but help us to hold it in the highest regard as the most precious of all the possessions you give to us.  Amen.

DEVOTION: But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.  Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.  The man who saw it has given his testimony, and his testimony is true.  He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.  The Story p. 381

This week and especially Saturday and Sunday in worship, we are celebrating the resurrection as it is next in line, chapter 27 of The Story.  What a wonderful story it is!  CHRIST IS RISEN!  HE IS RISEN INDEED!  ALLELUIA!!

When we hear those words and remember the FACTS of the resurrection we are given peace and assurance that all that Christ had come to do has been done!  Victory is won!  Salvation is secured!  You will rise from the dead too!  You will live forever because of what Christ has done for you by His own death and resurrection!

When the man, who some believe was John the disciple and others think was a guard or centurion, saw this and then later saw that Jesus was alive, he couldn't help but tell everyone he knew about his witness to the facts!  He wanted to tell everyone so that they also would believe in the risen Jesus!

What about you?  Are there people in your life who need to hear about the resurrection so that they too might believe?  Are there people in your life who need to hear about the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation earned by Christ on the cross and completed by Him at His resurrection?  Do you, yourself, need to hear it again to be reminded of it and get yourself out of the doldrums and darkness of sin?

The truth is ALL OF US NEED TO HEAR IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN!  All of us need to be reminded daily that Christ is risen from the dead just as He said He would!

YOU NEED TO HEAR IT TOO!  And you know exactly where you will hear it!  That's right in church AT WORSHIP!  As I've been gone the last two weekends I have been missing you by my own absence, but I know that for many of you it has been much longer than two weeks since I last saw you!  My brothers and sisters in Christ, THIS MUST NOT BE!  Make every effort to make it to worship this weekend so that you may, once again, hear the saving Word of the Gospel and so that you may proclaim to one another that CHRIST IS RISEN INDEED!  ALLELUIA!

Let us pray:  Lord, help us not to neglect worship for in it we receive forgiveness of sins, life and salvation which all give us the strength make it through the week and through life on this earth till we meet you face to face in paradise.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:     What does the word "Messiah" mean?  Messiah is a word that comes from the Hebrew word Moshiach which means The Anointed.  The word Christ is the Greek version of Messiah.  Anointed refers to a person initiated into God's service by being anointed with oil.

DEVOTION: To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Before he sentenced Jesus to death, Pontius Pilate asked Jesus, "what is truth?"  In a different part of his life Jesus answered that question when he said, "I am the way, and the TRUTH, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me."  JESUS IS TRUTH!

Being a Christian all my life I am convinced of that by the Holy Spirit.  As I live in this sinful world though I have become more and more aware that too many people in this world are not convinced of that.  They are living by their own made up truth.  Whatever fits in their brain, whatever they can conceive and understand, and whatever can be explained by human reason and science, that is the "truth".  Science becomes their god.  Their own reason trumps God's knowledge and power.  Satan does a good job of convincing people of this lie.  He has been doing it since the beginning.  It was Adam and Eve's first temptation to "know" good and evil, to "know" as much or more than God knew, to be like God.

I want to urge you, brothers and sisters in Christ, to hold to Christ's teaching and to believe in it more surely every day!  Then you will know the REAL TRUTH, and that TRUTH, JESUS, will set you free!  Live free in Christ!  Live free of sin, death, and the power of hell!  Live free of guilt and shame!  Live in the freedom that is the knowledge of the TRUTH!

Let us pray:  Lord Jesus, thank you for being the way, the truth, and the life for me!  Amen!  Alleluia!
