1. YOUTH POOL PARTY-- Monday, August 11 1-5pm--- If you ae in 6-12 grade, bring your towel, your flip flops, your sunscreen, you arm floaties, and even a friend if you life to our annual pool party! Please RSVP no later than August 10 by either calling the church office at 456-2888 or emailing Kelsey Overbeck at koverbeck@live.com

2. LABOR DAY FLOAT TRIP-- Float trip will be through Ozark Outdoors. Meet at the river at 10am for a 4 mile float. Please contact Teresa Scott to sign up. She can be reached by email at tscott@usmo.com, cell phone or text at 636-359-5041 or at Schraer heating and air conditioning at 636-456-5041. When signing up, [please provide your best phone contact number and email address, if you have one. More info to follow.

3. CAR RALLY-- Gas up your car and get ready for St. John's second annual Car rally on Sunday, August 3. Cars should start to arrive at church at noon. First cars will leave between 12:15 and 12:30 and each car will leave at 15 minute intervals after that. You will be given directions to follow an unknown path. There is a $10 entry charge per car. The winning car, that has the closest correct mileage at the end of the rally, will receive a gas gift card. Everyone will end up at an undisclosed winery, unless you are lost! You will be given a sealed envelope to open in case you get hopelessly lost! It works best if there are two people in the car, one to drive and the other to act as navigator.

3. Please pray for ED KOHRS who is in the hospital after a fall at the nursing home. He should be out of the hospital in the next day or two.

DEVOTION: He said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." The Story p.357

As a guy who has been a Christian since he was baptized at two weeks old and even before that as I heard the gospel from my mother's womb I am kind of at a disadvantage. I say this because, even though there have been times that I have strayed from being in worship as I should have and there were times where God and Jesus were not a big part of my life, there has never been a time when I have walked in darkness as the Scriptures above say. I have always had Jesus. He has never left me or forsaken me.

I say it is a disadvantage, because I cannot empathize with those who have walked in the darkness of unbelief and the despair of not knowing the forgiveness of Jesus. I can only imagine what that must be like, to be totally lost, to be without the hope of eternal life, to be wandering through life with no purpose and no real solid direction, to be living for this life alone. I haven't walked in those types of shoes, nor do I ever plan to do so. That puts me at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to sharing the gospel, because I really don't know what it's like to live without it.

In a different way, many of you, who have become Christian later in life are at a huge advantage when it comes to sharing the gospel with those who are completely lost, because you know what it was like to live without it and now you know what the real peace that passes understanding feels like. You know the true heartache and hopelessness of unbelief and now you know the opposite of that.

My encouragement for today is that none of you, no matter if you've been a Christian one day or 100 years, take the gospel of Jesus Christ and the impact it has on your life for granted! Cherish it! Enjoy it! Live in it! Share it! Speak it!

Let us pray: Lord God, make me to never take your good news for granted, but always to hold it in the highest regard! Amen.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were great friends who stuck together and encouraged each other to the point of going to a fiery furnace together. Even more, God stuck with them and saved them! He is our forever friend!

My absentmindedness has struck again: Here are two more prayer requests:

For DON NOLTE as he undergoes cataract surgery tomorrow.

For PHONSE HURLEY, a close family friend of the Perricones, who has been put on hospice care due to several health problems.

DEVOTION: Jesus said, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose is, but whoever loses his life for me and for the Gospel will save it." Matthew 16:23-24

What does this mean? That is a phrase are used to asking A LOT. What does it mean to deny ourselves? What does it mean to take up our cross? What does it mean to lose our life?

Well, it means just this:
Take up our cross= Endure burdens for the sake of Jesus and His Word. Don't forsake him for the sake of being comfortable. Also.... our cross is the cross of Jesus. They are one in the same. So in essence we are taking up the cross of Christ.

Deny ourselves= Let Jesus be Lord of our lives in every way. In other words, what He says goes.

Lose our life= Stop trying to save yourself by your own deeds or by your own will. Surrender your life to Jesus and let Him do His work in it.

Unfortunately, too many people are unwilling to surrender to Jesus. They say things like, "I don't have to go to church" to be a Christian when God's Word plainly says, "Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy." They say things like, "Well, I don't agree with what the Bible says there. It must be a mistake." when it is truly God's Word and "Scripture cannot be broken." And "All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.

Everyone does it. Everyone thinks it. That is why we cannot be Christ's disciples on our own. We need the Holy Spirit to fulfill God's will in our lives. We need Jesus to live in us and take us over heart and soul!

My prayer for you is that you SURRENDER your will to God's will today. And to know this very important thing: GOD WANTS YOU IN WORSHIP TO HEAR HIS WORD, TO RECEIVE HIS BODY AND BLOOD, AND TO GROW IN THE COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS!!!

Let us pray: Lord make me take up my cross, deny myself, and lose my life and forgive me when I don't so that you may save me for all eternity! Amen.

DEVOTION: Jesus and His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Who do people say I am?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." "But what about you?" He asked, "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Matthew 16:16

I'm sure you've heard the expression, "Actions speak louder than words." So what do your actions tell others about what you believe about Jesus?
Consider the following areas of your life and honestly confess to God that you have fallen short:
Your family-
Your job-
Your worship life-
Your tithes and offerings
Your marriage-

Need I go any further? Your mouth may say one thing, but your actions often say something totally different. There is more than enough guilt to go around. I certainly have plenty of it myself.

It was the same with Peter. He boldly confessed that Jesus was the Christ, but we know from the account of Peter's denial, that his actions didn't always match up with his words. His spirit may have been willing but his flesh was weak.

That is why we know that Jesus didn't build His church on Peter. If He had there would no longer be a church. It wasn't even based on the boldness of Peter's confession. No, His church is based on the truthfulness of Peter's statement. His church is built on the fact that He is the Christ the Son of the Living God.

As you looked at those areas of your life, there may have been areas that were better and ones that were worse, depending on the day. None of them were perfect. Don't strive for perfection because you will be continually and constantly be disappointed. Instead strive for living in His grace so that you can truly know what peace is all about and you can also know what the true church is built on!

Have a blest week!

Let us pray: Lord od, we thank you that your church is not built upon man but upon your truth. Help us to live in that truth and not in our own devices and schemes. Amen.

The theme is friendship and the Bible stories will revolve around different "friend" relationships throughout Scripture!!

AGAPE NEEDS A LOT OF HELP, ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER MONTHS

Food donations needed for both Warrenton and Wright City food pantries:

¨ Canned meats, soups, spaghetti sauces

¨ Boxed foods, macaroni & cheese, pastas

¨ Hot breakfast, cereals, granola bars

¨ Canned fruits and vegetables

¨ Peanut butter & Jelly

Non-food donations needed:

¨ Toiletry items, toilet paper, shampoo, soap, deodorants, razors and toothpaste

¨ Gently used clothing, furniture, household etc…

¨ Monetary donations (checks made out to Agape Ministry of Warren County, Inc.)

Volunteers needed for the following tasks:

¨ Sort donations

¨ Distribute food

¨ Work in the thrift shop

¨ General hauling

¨ Pick up food from grocery stores

(requires a truck)

GOLF OUTING IS JUST A MONTH AWAY!!!

Just a reminder that the 2014 St. John's Lutheran Church / Little Lambs Preschool golf tournament is coming up on Saturday, August 16, at Country Lakes Golf Course in Warrenton. (see attached flyer)

IF you have not already done so, please check with your playing partners and forward names to me as soon as you can.

Those individuals or organizations wishing to donate a hole sponsorship please advise NLT August 2 for time to get signs printed if needed.
