Subject: Fwd: Jonas

In the month of December, Jonas had developed a dry cough. Our radiologist said that his his lung could detect a mass in there and was trying to cough it out. (Which, of course, it could not. If only you could just cough out a tumor.) The largest of tumors in this lungs is on the right main bronchial tube. Doctors told us that because of its framework along the bronchial tube it cannot be removed without removing the entire lung, which is not an option. There is such a thing as a lung transplant, but cancer patients are not a good risk and, as I understand, cannot get one even if they wanted to. About two weeks ago Jonas completed 15 daily rounds of radiation to just that tumor in his right lung. His radiologist says that she expects to see a very measurable success. We think so, too. The cough was all but gone by time we got to the last 3 or 4 radiation treatments. This tells us that the tumor has shrunk considerably.

By the end of December we also recieved our final answer from Children's Mercy Hospital -- that they would not even be considering Jonas for the clinical trial he was elligible for. I'm still trying to process it all and I may post more about it here later, but let me bring you up to speed from there. We decided to enroll Jonas in the trial at a different hospital and by the time we had gotten all our paperwork to them, the trial had closed...nationally. So, we won't be getting in on that trial. It's too bad, really. Jonas had develped a great sense of hope with the thought of this trial. And sometimes, hope is all you need.

Now we need to get back to chemotherapy that will treat ALL of his cancer systemically. Before we can proceed he will need to have a full set of scans to tell us just where his cancer progression stands. Scans are scheduled for tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone who helped us get through Christmas. It was a special one.

DEVOTION:  "After this the Lord came to Abram in a vision: 'Do not be afraid, Abram.  I am your shield, your very great reward."   Genesis 15:1

What are you afraid of?  Are you afraid of the dark?  Are you afraid of public speaking?  Are you afraid that a relationship is deteriorating too much to keep going?  Are you afraid for your financial future?  Are you afraid for your kid's safety?

Let's face it.  There is more than enough stuff in this world to fear.  You can take your pick.  The trouble is that when we start letting our fears control us we are forgetting the extremely real comfort that is found in the verse above.  We forget that God is our shield against all things and that He alone is our greatest reward.

Things might harm us.  We might feel discomfort and even very bad pain in this world.  We will experience loss, frustration, bitterness, etc....  These things are very real too and too often cannot be avoided. The good news is that these things only last for a little while.  There is an end to all of it.  None of it will last forever.  He will deflect the everlasting effects of sin from us and in sin's place He will put everlasting peace, love and forgiveness.

Abram suffered a long time with discomfort, pain, and loss.  He had all sorts of trouble.  Some of it was his own doing.  Some of it was from the people around him, like Lot.  In all of this Abram's faith remained and so he stayed in God's grace and was blest with eternal life because of it.

Live in faith today, so that no matter what happens God will be your shield and your great reward.

Prayer:  Lord God, thank you for giving me faith and for shielding me from the lasting effects of Satan. Help me to trust in you for all things forever.  Amen.

DEVOTION: "So Abram went, as the Lord had told him..."  The Story pg. 13  Genesis 12:4

It is only a half of a sentence, but how much do you think this half sentence changed Abram's life?  Here he was enjoying his golden years.  He had all that he wanted, flocks, herds, a beautiful wife, and stability.  One thing he didn't have was a child, but he and Sarai had given up on that long ago.

Then God comes to him and tells him to go, because He was going to make him into a great nation and bless him.  Abram went from complete stability and a comfortable life to living in tents as a nomad simply because God told you to.

Are you comfortable right now?  Does everything seem to be going smoothly?  Do you feel like everything is in its right place and your ready to just coast through life?  Watch out, because God may just be ready to turn your life upside down.

It's interesting that when God calls people he never calls them to anything easy.  He called Abram to go to a foreign land that he didn't know.   He called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Israel.  He called David to be a king of Israel.  He called Saul, who would become Paul, from his life of leadership and importance to a life of missionary service and hard work.

God's will for you is not that you be comfortable.  It never has been and it probably never will be.  God has called you to go and make disciples.  He has called you to forgive sins.  He has called you to love everyone despite their various sins against you.  He calls you to make a difference in this world as he works in your life.

What, specifically, is God calling you to do?  Is he calling you to forgive that person that ha caused you bitterness, anger, and pain.  Is he calling you to get more involved in the mission of the church by attending worship more often, by going to Sunday school and Bible class, or by becoming more involved in the work of the church?

Whatever he is calling you to, don't fight it, don't disregard it, and don't ignore it.  Live in it!  Relish it!  Do it.  Even though it may be very hard you won't be disappointed.  Just the opposite.  You will be amazed at what God can do through you.

Let us pray:  Lord God, what are you calling me to do?  Show me so that I can get started!  Amen.

Text: Romans 6:1-11

Christ is risen, He is risen indeed and because of Him, we can live life boldly when it really matters most! Amen.

Have you been keeping up with the New Year's sports frenzy in the United States? We just completed a college football national championship game. At the same time, the NFL playoffs are in full swing. Of course, professional basketball games are filling the airwaves along with National Hockey League games. Even the pro golfers are playing in January! 2014 is filled with sports here and around the world.

And one of the things you'll hear over and over again this time of year, ready? It's "Hey, do you know the score of the big game?" I was just recently on a flight where there was a big football game being played while we were in the air. How do I know it was important? Well, the pilot came on the intercom about halfway through the flight and announced the score. And, as the plane landed, phones came out and were quickly turned on; not to call family or set up a ride; no, first they all had to know the score.

Knowing the score, counting the points, keeping track of the goals and the baskets; this matters to many because even with mere games winning and losing are very important to people.

But here's a sobering thought for us all, especially those of us who take these games very seriously. When all is said and done, all the scores I mentioned just logged in, the games that we're playing, the victories, the losses; in the end, they don't matter, do they? If you don't believe me, ask yourself the question, who won the big game that you are following today; who won it 25 years ago? See, it's all just temporary entertainment and yet millions of people study hard, watch game after game, year after year just to know the score.

If that's how seriously we take the games we play, the games that quickly fade into history, what happens when the score really does count, when your life depends not only on knowing the score but scoring enough to win? And what happens if God keeps score of what really matters? Do you ever wonder how He does that or where you stand in the contest that is your life now and forever?

Throughout the ages, people have thought about how God keeps score. The psalmist said, "If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?" (Psalms 130:3 NIV)

It's true, isn't it? When the score really counts in life, who can stand before a perfect and holy God if God possessed a scorecard of every sin you ever committed? We might try to look good, but we're guilty. Our best efforts more often fall incomplete, or are fumbled, or are penalty laden even in the games of this world. If God keeps score of our sins, we lose big time.

We're the kind of people that not only mess up the big things in life; even our failure to follow our own rules exposes us for who we are. I just saw a Federal Highway Administration study that kept track of how many drivers actually obeyed the posted speed limits on streets and highways. Do you want me to read the results? Are you starting to feel a little bit guilty? The study reported that "driver compliance with speed limits is poor. On average, 7 out of 10 motorists exceed the posted speed." 7 out of 10. Wow! Or how would feel if your city did like Washington D.C. and posted traffic camera's at every stop sign with infractions and penalties sent to you automatically in the mail. Kind of makes going to the mailbox every day a little bit more terrifying, doesn't it?

When the score is kept about our lives, truth is revealed. In the highway study or seeing the data on the D.C. cameras, we already get a glimpse of our brokenness and rebellion. But the laws of God expose us even deeper as sinners to the very core of our being. God's Holy Word testifies to us that our lives aren't what they're supposed to be.

In fact, truth be told, if God doesn't do something about the human situation, about your life, about my life, we're counted out and there's no arguing with the score. It's just, it's fair, it matters. It sure sounds like we lose if God keeps score.

But did you hear what Romans 6:11 said, my friend? It said this "In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus" (NIV).

What if God made possible another way to make your life count? Have you heard about the way He keeps score because of the work of Jesus Christ? It's remarkable, it's surprising, it's not what you would expect. Instead of being a grouchy, stingy, finicky, and critical God, One who can't wait to expose sinners as the failures they are, He instead looks at you and your sin, you and your imperfection, you and your failures, your bad decisions, your speeding, you and your disobedience, and says, "because of Jesus your Savior, you're dead to that. It doesn't count against you anymore." Why? Because Jesus Christ stepped onto the playing field of your life and mine when the score really mattered, when all your deeds and misdeeds were counted; Jesus Christ, God in the Flesh, was counted out in your place, faced the judgment of your earned failure, and makes His victorious life available to you as a gift, one He earned for us all.

Because of Jesus, our heavenly Father invites us to count ourselves dead to the things that are so real and count so much against us because they have no hold over us any longer. But even more, count yourself eternally alive to God, our heavenly Father because of Christ's work on our behalf.
2 Corinthians 5 puts it this way: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself....in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation" (2 Corinthians 5:17-19).

When the score of your life really counts, count on Christ for your victory. When the score of your life matters, God wants the word about the way He keeps score in His Son Jesus to get out. His scoring system is something we never would have imagined! If you're struggling today with guilt, with your sin, with your failures, listen up my friend; because of Jesus Christ's death on the cross, your sin doesn't count against you anymore! Let me say that again: by faith in Jesus your sin doesn't count. The past year your bad decisions, your lost temper, your foul-ups in relationships, your poor judgment; it doesn't count. It's not on the scoreboard or on the scorecard any longer?

All right, Pastor, I really want to believe that but what about my past? I mean, there's some really bad things there. Can you relate to that? Can God really love me if there's divorce, addiction, times of meanness or hatefulness in my life? Can He still love me if I did something really bad in my past like walking away from my wife, or husband, or kids, if I aborted my child or still struggle with secrets sins and temptations? Can God really love somebody as broken as me? If these are your struggles, my friend, it is even more important that you hear the Bible clearly. Because of Christ, in Christ, trusting in Christ, none of those things count against you. Because of Jesus Christ alone, it's not on the scorecard of your life anymore.

How can that be? How can that be? Are we talking about cheap and careless grace here? Are we making light of the people I've hurt in my life? Aren't we just changing the rules when it suits us, Pastor? No, not at all; you see, today, as you trust in Jesus Christ, you can know that all of those sins, all of that pain and hurt were counted, but not against you. There was a price to be paid, those things count! But, they were heaped on the shoulders of the Son of God in your place. Isaiah 53 says that Jesus, "poured out his soul unto death and was numbered and counted with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and He makes intercession for the transgressors."

Your sin was on Jesus' scorecard, by God's grace. And, today, your life in Him, by Him, with Him is brand new.

This New Year resolve to know and believe this; that the negative labels that seem to have stuck to you before, they're not accurate, you are alive in Christ.

The belief that you had that you are a lost cause and that your life was washed up; it's not true. You are alive because of Christ!

The guilt you carry because of your past, the haunting feelings of deep regret? God doesn't remember those misdeeds. They're gone, washed clean by the blood of Jesus Christ.

I hope you're hearing me clearly today. I hope every burdened and hopeless soul is listening carefully today. I hope everyone who feels that God could never love them is attentive to this message today.

Listen again to what Romans 6 says about God and His scorecard: "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:3-7).

Did you hear what happened? When you were baptized, washed with water in the Name of God, the Father, Son, and Spirit, your scorecard filled with sin, chaos, disobedience, and brokenness was nailed to the cross with Jesus; killed and paid for with the perfect sacrifice of the Son of God. Your sin was brought to nothing! And then, set free from sin, you were raised with Jesus Christ, given the gift of new life; a clean slate, new life scorecard based on His work for you!

All that weight that you feel you have to carry, that heavy weight of your past or the burdensome worries about your future, God has taken that on for you. It's not your burden anymore.

Back in the spring of 2013, devastating and record-setting floods hit parts of the United States. Fargo, North Dakota braced for catastrophic floods due to late winter snows. The city received a load of 15 million pounds of sand. Their job was to convert that sand into 30-pound sandbags to keep the flood waters at bay. But how do you handle 15 million pounds of sand? How can you handle that kind of load? How about with a bunch of middle-schoolers? That's right. Hundreds of sixth through eighth graders, along with other Fargo volunteers, helped fill the bags. The 15 million pounds of sand was divided into little bits by many hands. Within ten days, 1 million sandbags were keeping the floodwaters away from the city.

But God didn't need the thousands of hands of middle-schoolers or volunteers. No, even those precious hands couldn't face down humanity's real problems. What our heavenly Father needed were the two nail-marked hands of His Son to overcome the flood of guilt, and shame, and death that promises to overwhelm anyone who refuses His grace. In Christ, God made the sandbags of His grace a wall of blessing to all who believe, holding back the floodwaters of eternal death in your life. Instead of drowning us in our sins, He drowns our sins instead! He buries them with Christ, deep down and dead in the waters of Baptism so that we might rise up from those waters to walk in newness of life! Destruction averted, protection provided, and now believers in Jesus can live abundant, eternal lives of grace. The Bible says, "Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him" (Romans 6:8).

When the score really matters, God points you to His Son at work for you in Him; your sin doesn't count. God keeps score and in Him He scores you innocent, holy, righteous. God marks you down as someone with a new beginning. God puts you in the category of someone with hope and promise for life because you live now and walk with the risen Savior, Jesus Christ.

I know an older man who was tormented about the sins in his life as he lay on his deathbed. He was a Christian man. He lived a life of faith. But the devil was piling up guilt and regret at the end of this man's life. I know He is not alone. I know there's a lot of people out there thinking the same way. People often get very melancholy when facing death. Why? Because that's when we know the score of our lives really counts. This poor man lay awake in the early hours of the morning weeping and groaning about his flawed life. He knew he was on the losing end of the score of his life if it was based on his best alone.

But, in the middle of those final sleepless nights and mornings, there was one word that would console him amidst the tears. It was the gracious way God kept score in view of His promise to save. He loved this verse from Psalm 32: "Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit" (Psalms 32:1-2).

Even in his struggles with the past, sinful memories, he knew that he was not abandoned or forsaken, because he knew there was a Lord in his life who overcame all that and did not count that against him. Baptized into Christ, he could count on Christ to have the last word in his life, a word of grace and blessing that really counts when the score really matters.

Friend, you are not abandoned or cursed. You are blessed, for the Lord does not count your sin against you because of Jesus. You have been buried with Christ; baptized into His death. You have been raised to new life with Him by faith.

Sometimes such things they seem too good to be true, don't they? Maybe you're thinking it would take a miracle for this to be true for you.

Well, it does, and it did. The miracle is that Jesus entered our sinful lives so that we may have His eternal life. On this Sunday, Christian churches around the world are reading about the Baptism of Jesus. His wasn't a "washing because of His sin," no, His was a "washing that identified Him with sinners." When the waters of baptism were poured over Jesus, as God declared, "This is my Son with whom I am well pleased," God began keeping score in a very unique way. With every perfect step Jesus took, with every perfect thought and action Jesus lived, God began marking our scorecards with His favor.

When you're baptized into the Name of Christ, you're given His precious gift of eternal hope in the forgiveness of sins and the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit in your life.

As a baptized child of God, the game isn't over for you today, even if you feel like it is. There is still so much more to come. By faith, you move forward in the favor of God in Christ.

This new life that God gives you in Jesus is a game changer! As you put your hope in Him, as you wait upon Him, the Bible says, you will renew your strength, and even if you find yourselves weary today. You will "run and not be weary;" you will "walk and not be faint" (Isaiah 40:31).

God's scorecard in Christ is a game changer. Because, faith in Jesus connects us to His resources, His righteousness, His forgiveness, His grace; and in Him you can "count yourselves dead to sin and alive to God" (Romans 6:11). That's a real new beginning for this New Year and beyond.

So, I suspect that you'll be watching some games this New Year, but, as the clock of those games ticks away and as you see points add up, remember the scorecard in your life, that's the one that really matters. Remember God's gracious scoring system for your life. That's a foundation, a motivation, and eternal power to live life with gratitude toward your Savior for His forgiveness; to show His love to people in your life; and to celebrate in Christ what really counts and what does not, now and forever!

Amen.

LUTHERAN HOUR MAILBOX (Questions & Answers) for January 12, 2014
Topic: Why Was Jesus Baptized?

ANNOUNCER: Now, Pastor Gregory Seltz responds to questions. I'm Mark Eischer. Pastor, John the Baptist baptizes Jesus in the Jordan River, but why was Jesus baptized?

SELTZ: Now that's interesting, Mark. Not only do our listeners ask the question about Jesus' baptism, but even John the Baptist asked the question! The Gospel of Matthew tells us: "Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. Now John would have prevented him, saying, 'I need to be baptized by you, and now you come to me?'" (Matthew 3:13-15 ESV).

ANNOUNCER: Right, because baptism is a washing for sin; so John's confused. He thinks it doesn't make sense for me to baptize the Son of God.

SELTZ: That's right. John the Baptist recognized the perfect Son of God in his midst and he knew if anyone should do the baptizing, it was Jesus. But Jesus' reply helps us understand why He was baptized. He said, "Let it be so now, for it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness" (Matthew 3:15 ESV).

ANNOUNCER: And what does that mean?

SELTZ: Jesus' baptism was now part of what we call the "substitutionary atonement" of Christ. When Jesus was baptized, He identified Himself, even though sinless, as the One who came to bear our sin. The Bible says it this way, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV).

ANNOUNCER: So Jesus graciously enters into our plight and His baptism shows the redemptive road that He would take for us.

SELTZ: That's a good way of putting it, Mark, especially because another key reason Jesus was baptized was to show publicly that He was God's Son, the Messiah, here to save the world. One common element of the four mentions of Jesus' baptism in the Gospels is the appearance of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, descending upon Jesus as He was baptized. Matthew, Mark, and Luke also mention the voice from heaven that said. "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." John adds the testimony Jesus is the Son of God.

ANNOUNCER: And so here we are at the beginning of Jesus' Messianic ministry and God wants to make sure everyone knows just who this is.

SELTZ: That's right. Jesus on the scene was approved by the Father for the mission of salvation. Back in the Old Testament, Joshua, you remember Moses' protégé; he was described as a man in whom the Spirit dwelt (Numbers 27:18). It was important for people to know that God's servants were filled with the Holy Spirit. Well, here was Jesus, God the Father's Spirit-filled Agent for our salvation.

ANNOUNCER: And these events in Jesus' life also followed the same pattern as the people of God in the Old Testament.

SELTZ: We see that pattern especially in the Gospel of Matthew. You know what happened to the Israelites when they were freed from slavery in Egypt. They moaned and complained. They worshipped other gods. They were a mess. But in the Gospel of Matthew we see Jesus enter and leave Egypt when His life was threatened as a child. Then He goes through the water of baptism in the Jordan just like the people of Israel went through the water of the Red Sea. And then Jesus is led into the wilderness to be tempted. But unlike the people of Israel in the wilderness, Jesus stayed faithful and obedient to God the Father through it all. He was our perfect Substitute, fulfilling without sin everything we are unable to do.

ANNOUNCER: Here we see God's plan in its beauty, its poetry. But it's also a relief to know that Jesus is that perfect Substitute.

SELTZ: Yeah. It sure is! Jesus also leads the way and sets the pattern for our lives. Romans chapter six, captures this beautiful value of our baptism because of Jesus' work for us. The Apostle Paul says: "Don't you know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:3-4 ESV).

ANNOUNCER: And in that sense the value of baptism is not so much that we are following Jesus' example, but it's through baptism that we receive that new life that He earned for us through His death and resurrection.

SELTZ: And that's why it's called "the great exchange." Jesus identified Himself with our sin, entered our broken lives when He was baptized, and when we are baptized in His Name, our sinful selves are crucified with Him, killed and buried, and then we are raised with Him through baptism to new and forgiven life.

ANNOUNCER: And we praise God for the good news of Jesus' baptism and ours. Thank you, Pastor Seltz. This has been a presentation of Lutheran Hour Ministries.

DEVOTION:  "Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.  The Story pg. 11

Ever get I a grumpy mood?  I don't know if it is the weather, the news I listen to too much, my getting older every day, sin in the world, or what, but we all get down in the dumps from time to time.

Many people suffer from SAD seasonal affective disorder which is caused by the lack of sunlight and serotonin on the brain.  This past Monday is considered by many to be the saddest day of the year.

Truth is that it is easy to get down, depressed, sad, angry, and bitter not just this time of year, but every time of the year, especially when our circumstances aren't quite what we want or the sin in our lives is weighing us down.

Then we see a passage like the one today.  Everyone loves rainbows.  They are pretty.  They brighten up the sky after a storm.  They give us hope.

They remind God of something too.  Every time he sees a rainbow he is reminded of his covenant to His people. Imagine all of the rainbows God sees from his throne on high every day.  He is constantly reminded of His promises!

His promises are
1. He will never destroy all life on earth again with a global flood.
2. He will never leave us or forsake us.
3. Whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

You can trust in God's promises, because history has proven that He ALWAYS keeps them!

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to be reminded of Your promises, because Your promises give me peace, comfort, joy, and hope.  Amen.

HELP FOR PARENTS TO GUIDE THEIR CHILDREN THROUGH THE STORY
A big part of The Story experience is that the whole family grows together in it as each person in the family reads it, you will all literally be on the same page.  yet, it may be hard to get discussion going or to help you get started together.   Are you looking for a way to connect with your kids as they and you read The Story together?  There's help!

If you click the link below you will find parent pages for all age groups that you can use to connect with your kids at least once a week.  Whenever your "together" time is, make it productive.  It is a .pdf file of parent pages that goes from lesson one all the way through 31.  Check it out and tell me what you think.  I think they are excellent!!

Salvation Army Bell Ringer Thank You Letter

To all who rang bells for Agape this past December 14 and throughout the holiday season.

Subject: Salvation Army Bell Ringer Thank You Letter

I wish to personally thank you from the bottom of my heart, for participating in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing campaign during this Holiday season. This year more than 175 volunteers worked 350 hours to raise $13,195.56 in the Bell Ringing campaign. We keep 85 cents of every dollar raised, so this year's campaign netted $11,216.20 for our homeless prevention programs. This money is used to fight homelessness in our community by helping people when they cannot pay their rent or utilities because of job loss, illness or disability, or because the job they have does not pay enough to cover their basic needs.

If you are part of a group, business, or organization, please pass my gratitude along to your members. It is the kindness of the community members such as yourself that make our job of helping the hungry, hurting, and homeless of Warren County possible. On behalf of myself, my volunteers, directors, and staff her at Agape and on behalf of our clients and families that were blessed by your participation in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing campaign, I thank you.

Sincerely,

Carleen Williams

Helping the Hungry, Hurting, and Homeless in Warren County

Wed. Jan 8, 2014

DEVOTION:  The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time..  The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled."  Genesis 6:5-6 (The Story pg. 8)

Yesterday I was getting increasingly angry at my 5th grade basketball team.  They were acting goofy and weren't taking practice seriously.  They didn't listen when I gave them instructions and kept doing the same wrong things over and over again.  Even Gus, who is usually paying attention, was running around like a chicken with his head cut off.  I made them run.  That didn't work.  I yelled at them.  That didn't work.  Nothing I tried was going to change them yesterday.  Man, I can't wait till they get back to school and get into a regular routine again.  I was so frustrated.  The whole rest of the night I was grumpy and grumbling about everything.

I imagine that this, in a much bigger way, is how God feels toward us.  He is standing there, like a coach, trying to tell us the right way to go, giving us instruction, motivating us to go the right way and do the right thing, and all we want to do is climb the walls and act like idiots.

The good news about all of this is that He knew we wouldn't win the game on our own.  We would lose it every time.  If left up to our own will and our own ability, we would get run over by the devil.  That is why He took the ball into His own hands and sent His Son into the game.  Jesus is, was, and always will be the star of this game we call life on earth.  He is the one who took the devil down.  He is the one who suffered, died, and rose again for us.

How, since we are filled with the Holy Spirit and Christ lives in us by virtue of our baptisms and our faith in Christ, let us throw all that nonsense, called sin, off of us.  Let's get our heads in the game and do what God has called us to do, to live our lives to His glory because we are saved!

Let us pray: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for winning the game for us.  Amen.

1. Menu: biscuits and gravy, sausage, scrambled eggs, fruit

2. I do have several things that we could do for our Bible Study time for this coming men's breakfast this Saturday, but I wanted to get your feedback.  Is there something specifically that you would like to learn.  Do you have questions about things in the Bible or Christianity? Let me know so I can make our monthly time together as productive as possible.

3. We need to clear 3 feet away from the furnace in the trustees closet and then paint the floor yellow in that spot so that no one puts anything there.  Who is willing to stick around and do that?  PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  (I have a b-ball game at Holy Rosary at 11 so I will need to leave by 10:15)

Please let me know whether or not you are coming!

DEVOTION:   "Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.  The Story, Pg. 4

What if instead of putting on clothes one day, you just went to work naked?  What do you think would happen?

1. You would be very cold, especially today.

2. You would be very self conscious because everyone would be looking at you.

3. You'd probably get arrested, fired, or sent to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Being naked is not normal.  It is frowned upon.  It is called indecent exposure for a reason.  Yet, that is not the way God meant it.  Did you ever wonder why it took till Adam and Eve sinned for them to realize that they were naked?  Could it have been that, before they sinned their bodies were perfect?  Maybe.  Could it be because they had no reason to be ashamed of their nakedness?  Maybe.  Could it be that the sin that they committed not only affected that one instance but everything around them and in them, including their now mortal bodies.  Most definitely!
Truthfully it is all three.  It is only indecent for us to be naked because our bodies are full of sin both the sin we are born with (original) and the sins we commit (actual).  We are only ashamed of our nakedness because of the sin that is in us.

Truthfully, if we weren't sinful we could walk around naked all day long and no one would care.  It would be normal.  One day it will be normal again!!  We will throw off these sin filled bodies and our bodies will become like His glorious body..... sinless and perfect.

Until then we continue to "cover" our sin with the blood of Christ and wash it away as we remember our baptisms!  Thank the Lord that he covers you with His grace and mercy.

Let us pray:  Lord God, we are afraid because we are naked and so we hide, just like Adam and Eve did.  Help us to "come clean" with our sins before you so that you may truly cover us with your love, mercy, and grace.  Amen.

Text: Psalm 150

Grace, mercy, and peace be to you in the Name of Jesus who invites you to a life of prayer and thanksgiving that will never end. Amen.

What a way to end the prayer that Jesus has taught us, right? He has taught us to pray to God as our Father and not just a majestic force in the universe; He has taught us to use His Name as our source for life and salvation; He has taught us to put the power of His forgiveness and Spiritual protection to work in our lives. And He has even taught us to ask for our daily needs in a way that unleashes the power of thanksgiving in our prayerful petitions. Lord Jesus, you have indeed taught us how to pray!

So, what better way to end this prayer than with a doxology, a word of praise! The whole prayer has been building towards such an end, hasn't it? Indeed, the very Good News of grace in Jesus Christ, the proclamation of salvation in His Name, it invites us to pray praisefully; in full confidence that all power, honor, and glory are His, forever and ever.

What a way to end the prayer, right? Well, there is some question as to whether this doxology was actually in the Bible's accounts of the Lord's Prayer. It seems likely that this praise ending was inserted into Matthew, chapter 6 because it had become a common ending to the prayer in the worship of the early church. If so, the thought was appropriately drawn from elsewhere in the Scriptures, probably from 1 Chronicles 29. But, whether Jesus closed the prayer with these words or not, He instructed the people to pray with just this way of thinking....to pray to the Father who eagerly desires to give good gifts to His children, to pray to the Father who has the power and authority to give those gifts as well. So, when believers in the early church prayed this prayer in worship when they burst forth in doxological praise at the end of the Lord's Prayer, they were merely saying, "Yes, Lord, we will pray your way, with your confidence, with your promises as our focus, our strength, and our guide."

Doxology, praise, not only is it a fitting end to the Lord's Prayer, but it's also a challenge from the Lord's Prayer to all who pray it. The point of the doxology calls us to pray His prayer and live our lives especially in the coming year of 2014 in faith. And the question to you, my friend, after all these weeks of learning to pray Jesus' way, is "How will you receive this prayer; how will you use this prayer; how will you put this prayer to work in your lives?"

So, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that, even if this doxology isn't in this section of the Bible right here in Matthew 6, there's no better way to end this prayer than to pray, "for Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever, Amen."

For such a doxology ends the prayer well, focusing our prayerful attention where it belongs, on the things of God, on God Himself.

Such a doxology ends the prayer well; for praise is a word of the believer, the one who knows who God is, who knows what God has done, and trusts in Him and entrusts his or her life to the Father who loves them with an everlasting love. Doxologies are not only words of praise; they're prayerful words of praise-filled faith!

And that's exactly how Jesus wants us to pray His prayer to live our lives in the year of our Lord 2014; in faith, with praise and thanksgiving.

So, the church has always received the gifts of Jesus Christ with doxology, with praise and thanksgiving.

When early church believers worshipped and prayed, surely they were reminded of David's doxology in his final prayer as King in 1 Chronicles 29. He prayed, "Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power, and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom."

The doxology of King David surely is a great way to close the prayer of the King of Kings.

When believers worshipped and prayed, they were reminded of John's vision of the coming of the kingdom of heaven in Revelation 5, where he heard the angels singing in a mighty chorus: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor, glory and blessing."
And when believers prayed the prayer and the songbook of the Old Testament, the Psalms, the book itself ended with a doxology, a psalm of praise, saying, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord."

That's just how God's people have always received His gifts of grace; they revel in them, rejoice in them, and receive them with praise. So, it doesn't shock us that the church responded to the teaching of the Lord's Prayer the same way, with praise!

And that's the opportunity that we have today and in the New Year too; if we trust in the Lord Jesus, we also get to receive this prayer in praise, and in faith, and put it to work in our life, inviting God's gracious hand to be over all that we say and do. So, what else can we say but "Thine is the kingdom, the power, the glory forever and ever, Amen!"

But this doxology is not merely a state of mind or a state of our hearts; it's a way of life. Indeed, our praise ending of this prayer reminds us that this prayer changes things because this prayer changes people!

When we say this doxology, our full, final attention is drawn to the things that really matter in our lives. And, when our attention is drawn to God, who He is, what He has done, and what He is yet doing in the world and in our lives, that changes things!

Prayer with praise, praise in prayer; that way of life it changes hearts.

Just think about it; doxology, praise, it reminds us to whom we're praying....Our Father is the Creator of the universe. He has the power to answer your prayer. The Prophet Isaiah says it best, "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary...He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak...those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Think about it; doxology, praise, it reminds us of what God has done for us and for all. God the Father sent His Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to redeem and to restore you to Himself, now and forever. Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, the kingdom of God is here, now, available to all by faith in Jesus Christ. And He promises that nothing in this world can separate us from His love!

Prayer prayed in such faith, focused on the God of the Bible who has made and kept all of His promises, such prayer changes people because God is the One who saves, who redeems, and gives you and me life. Connected to Christ, His work, His promises; prayer in such faith makes a difference in our lives all year round!

It was Easter morning, 1799, the people of Feldkirch, Austria, were terrified. Indeed, they believed that this Easter would probably be the worst day of their lives. Outside the gates stood the army of Napoleon and he wanted in. The citizens were ready to raise the white flag of surrender.

But the bishop of the church had another agenda. In a voice trembling with emotion, he said to the townspeople, "This is Easter Day. This is the day of our King's resurrection. We must have one moment of triumph. Let us even now prayerfully ring all the bells of Easter." The people agreed. Soon the sound of church bells ringing filled the air with sounds of victory.

Napoleon's army was astounded. What could it mean? It didn't take long for the generals to conclude that only one possible explanation could account for such celebration: the Austrian army had arrived during the night to help defend the town. The bells had not yet stopped ringing when the French army broke ranks and fled.

Prayer prayed in the confidence of the resurrected Lord can truly change things, can't it? But, praying the Lord's Prayer in faith, in confidence, and trust; now that truly is ringing resurrection bells of hope, bells of eternal victory in the struggles and challenges of our lives now even more.

But, you know when I say that, you say, "Well, Pastor, I know this prayer can change people, but do you really think it can change our communities, our world?" Well, remember the promise of what is yet to come. The Apostle John gives us a glimpse of that in Revelation 7. He says, "After these things I looked, and behold, I saw a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation and tribe and people and tongue, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; 10 and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, 'Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.'"

Even now, this very year, God is at work bringing such a promise to fruition. Even now, as God's Word goes forth, it is penetrating each culture, each tribe, each nation and language, person by person, life by life. When we pray, "Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory," we can see John's vision of heaven by faith, but someday we shall see it with our eyes. But even more, such prayerful participation in the majesty of God's mission is to bring all people, from all tribes and nations, to faith in Jesus Christ by the power of His Spirit.
That's the dream. That's the prayerful vision of God and His people. That's the joy of being a Lord's Prayer praying member of Christ's church, now and forever!

The Lord's Prayer is challenging all of us not to be shocked by what you see; keep on praying, keep on serving. And the Lord's Prayer is also preparing us for the amazing reality of what is yet to come. For the Lord is protecting and blessing His people right now and what is yet to come we can't even imagine. But, in all things, as John reminds us, as the believing church reminds us, the kingdom, the power, the glory are His, now, this New Year and forever!

So, to pray the "Kingdom, power, and glory are yours Lord," is to be bold in our praise and testimony about Jesus in the midst of the world; just as it is. This prayer marks us as God's people in this world, for the world. This Lord's Prayer orients all of our life to the things of God. When we pray this prayer, God establishes us as pillars of prayer in the world, for the world. His majesty is seen in our prayerful mission to share the Gospel with others in His Name.

We are called to be prayer pillars of His hope in a world devoid of hope. We are called to be pillars of that grace in a world that is anything but gracious and loving. We are called to be pillars of His truth in a world that has dispensed with truth for temporary pleasures of a world passing away. Thine is the kingdom and we, yes, we are followers of the King Jesus. Thine is the power, yes, and we preach Christ crucified, the power of God for salvation. Thine is the glory, yes, and we are privileged to be part of His glorious mission of preaching the Good News of life and salvation in Him for all!

In the middle of one of the most powerful political centers of the modern world, Washington D.C., stands a monument-The United States National Monument, the Washington Monument.

It's the tallest building in D.C. by law! And at its highest peak, on the aluminum cap on the east top portion of the monument, are displayed these two words: Laus Deo. These two words were placed on the top the monument facing skyward to God. They are placed in the highest position of one of the most powerful cities in the world.

What do those two Latin words mean? Laus Deo? Well, you know what it means; "Praise Be to God!"

That's right. Praise be to God! It's a pillar of praise in the midst of the power of Washington D.C. Within the monument itself there are also memorial stones with scriptures and prayers from the nations. Prayer and praise!

And, deposited in the cornerstone of the Monument, on July 4th, 1848, was deposited the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society, with thanks and praise!

So, there it is; the Washington Monument, a pillar of praise in the midst of the nation, built on a foundation filled with the Word of God; now that's something that someone didn't want you to miss.

Well, here's something God doesn't want you to miss. God wants the world to see in 2014 and beyond, pillars of praise and prayer, as well; and we get to be the Lord's Prayer practitioners alive in faith, active in prayer, established by Him in this world for the sake of the world in hopes that they might come to faith in Him too!

The doxology is a vital part of our discipleship and prayer because it focuses our prayerful attention where it belongs, on God. And Jesus, throughout the Gospels, He's inviting His followers to pray with a much larger view about life and salvation. He wants His people to start seeing things the way He sees things, the way the Father sees things. The Lord's Prayer is ultimately about reorienting our life toward the things of God, the future as God sees it, the priorities that He has about things. And there is no greater truth than the fact that the kingdom, the power, and the glory are God's forever and ever and we pray that His kingdom, power, and glory might indeed be ours as we strive to reflect Him in this New Year and throughout our days on this earth!

And that's the point, my friend; God's glory is not merely that His kingdom will finally be realized in all of its fullness. That's a given. The majesty is best seen not in God's raw power, but in His power to save; as people still come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior too.

The mission is the majesty. God wants all to be saved! So, if you are struggling a bit today because you wish things looked better in your life or in this world in the year ahead, you are not alone. But, don't wait hopelessly; rather wait prayerfully in word and deed, like a bride or a bridegroom waits for that day when they become husband and wife; as parents wait for the day to come when their child enters the world; wait as people who wish the days of waiting would pass quickly, but know for certain that the best is yet to come!

That's doxology in action, in faith, in praise, in service to others in His Name, the One who is worthy of our praise and eager for our prayers!

I love the song "Wedding Day," by Casting Crowns. It speaks of that kind of joyful expectation of waiting with Him, for Him. The bride in the song is the church, and the bridegroom is Christ. The first stanza says it this way,
There's a stirring in the throne room, And all creation holds its breath
Waiting now to see the bride groom, Wondering how the bride will dress
And she wears white, And she knows that's undeserving
She bears the shame of history
But this worn and weary maiden, Is not the bride that he sees
And she wears white, head to toe, But only he could make it so

For when someone dries your tears, When someone wins your heart
And says you're beautiful, When you don't know you are
And all you've longed to see, Is written on his face
When love has come and finally set you free
On that wedding day
On that wedding day.

Well, we pray with that kind of expectation, of the final day when the Lord, the eternal Bridegroom, will come to bring us all to Himself forever and ever.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever and ever.

God's mission is the majesty; His prayer focuses us on His power, His provision, and His purpose for us in this world.

So, pray on, dear friend, pray on! Pray this prayer in your life throughout this New Year; pray it with me each Sunday on the Lutheran Hour, and may God empower you to a life of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving in His Name, forever and ever. Amen!

LUTHERAN HOUR MAILBOX (Questions & Answers) for January 5, 2014
Topic: Did Wise Men Really Visit Jesus?

ANNOUNCER: Now, Pastor Gregory Seltz responds to questions from listeners. I'm Mark Eischer. Nativity scenes often depict three Wise Men who came to visit the Baby Jesus. What do we really know about them?

SELTZ: That's a great question, Mark. It reminds us again of the celebration of Epiphany, which means "appearing." Epiphany is a day celebrated as a kind of a presentation to the public of Jesus as Wise Men, or Magi, from the east visit Jesus and His family.

ANNOUNCER: So the Wise Men did pay a visit?
SELTZ: Well, that's what the Bible tells us, Mark. It's recorded in Matthew chapter two. We're told that Magi from the east came to Jerusalem to visit the "One who had been born king of the Jews." They went there, the Bible says, because they "saw His star in the east" and they came "to worship Him."

ANNOUNCER: That account from the Bible has become very popular in depictions of the manger scene. We also think of songs like "We Three Kings." Even sayings like "Wise men still seek Him," but what was it really all about?

SELTZ: We believe these Wise Men or Magi were from Babylon or Persia, located east of the Holy land. The word "magi" is an Aramaic word for eastern spiritual men who looked for signs in the stars and tried to discern God's wisdom. These particular Magi may have descended from people who learned about the promised "King of the Jews," One who would literally change the world as they knew it. Their relatives may have learned such things from the people of Israel who were exiled in Babylon. Their relatives may have met people like Daniel or Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego--believers who were forcibly settled in the east during captivity. So, we're not sure how many Magi came, but we do know that a group of them visited Jesus.

ANNOUNCER: Why then does the song indicate there were three Wise Men?

SELTZ: Most likely the number three came about because of the three gifts offered to Jesus.

ANNOUNCER: All right; gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

SELTZ: Exactly. With these three precious gifts offered, history began to talk about three Magi. But, as I said, we don't really know how many there were. The significance of the visit is what's most intriguing. Throughout the Bible, God emphasized that His Messiah and also His own people were to be a light to all nations.

ANNOUNCER: Because God's salvation is for the whole world.

SELTZ: Absolutely. God wanted to reach everyone through the people of Israel. The message of salvation in the true God wasn't just for one group of people on earth. It was for the whole world. So God worked throughout history to make certain the Good News of salvation, that it was shared with everyone. The fact that the Magi, non-Jewish people, came to visit Jesus and worship Him, that underscores God's plan that the Savior was for the redemption and rescue of the whole world.

ANNOUNCER: As predicted in Isaiah chapter 60.

SELTZ: Exactly. Think about that. It's even more remarkable. If you were to try to predict who might visit the newborn Messiah, there is no way that anyone would ever guess that a contingent of foreign spiritual men would stop by. But 700 years before it ever happened, the prophet Isaiah foretold this amazing event--even down to the gifts they give the Christ child.

ANNOUNCER: Now, did they see Jesus lying in the manger?

SELTZ: The Bible says that the Magi came to a house in the Bethlehem area. Some scholars think that Jesus may have been two years old when the Magi visited. So, we're not certain about the timeframe, but we do know that Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were in a house at the time.

ANNOUNCER: What's the significance of the gifts?

SELTZ: People have speculated about what the gifts meant. Some have said that the gold symbolized the kingship of Christ; frankincense symbolized the prophetic work of Jesus as He made the Word of God known; and myrrh, a spice used for embalming a body, pointed to the priestly work of Jesus as He was to become the sacrifice for our sins. Those are wonderful symbols, but the Magi probably brought these gifts because they were valuable items suitable to be presented to a king. What is most remarkable and encouraging is that the Magi believed. They openly demonstrated that the newborn Jesus was the King sent by God, the promised Messiah, as they bowed down and worshipped.

ANNOUNCER: Which brings to mind the verses in the book of Philippians, "that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Christ is Lord."

SELTZ: "To the Glory of God and the salvation of all who believe!"

ANNOUNCER: Certainly a Savior worthy of gifts as well as faith, theirs and ours. Thank you Pastor Seltz. This has been a presentation of Lutheran Hour Ministries.
