"To Give His Life"
June 25, 2013
Daily Devotions Sunset 6-25-13(Jesus said) "... the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." Matthew 20:28b

Michael Patterson is a man who does good deeds.

A month ago Patterson came to the aid of some people who were hurt in an SUV and tractor-trailer accident. Two weeks ago he was at Georgia's Euharlee Creek when he saw a four-year-old child get pulled under. Those who were there say the 43-year-old Patterson immediately dove off the dam to save the child.

The water into which Patterson dove was less than six feet deep. He broke his neck in three places, severed his spine, and was paralyzed. It was a terrible tragedy for a man who had just started a new job as a contractor and doesn't yet have insurance.

But that, my friends, is not the end of the story. There is more.

Somehow, and nobody knows just how, Patterson was able to save the girl. According to reports, the child was at the bottom of the water and somebody pushed her up. At that moment there was only one person in the water: Michael Patterson.

A miracle? Possibly. I don't know. On the other hand, I do know that a man gave himself and his future to save a child.

Patterson's sacrifice makes us mindful of what the Savior has done for all of us. Like that girl, we also had been dragged under. In our case sin had grabbed hold of us and our eternal death was certain. Seeing our helpless condition, Jesus came into this world to bring about our rescue.

His was an action that took Him to the cross, which had Him give Himself and His future to save and offer salvation to all of humanity.

Yes, there are some similarities between the stories, and there are some differences. The biggest of those differences is this if Patterson had known the shallowness of the water into which he was diving, he would have done something different. In order to save the girl and himself, he might have jumped feet first into the water, or he might have gone to a different spot.

In contrast to Mr. Patterson, we have the sacrifice made by our Savior who knew exactly what He was doing. Promises had been given and prophesies had been made about His life. Before Jesus was ever born in Bethlehem He knew His life would end up on the cross. Between His birth, death and resurrection, He was fully aware He would be rejected and unwanted.

Even so, Jesus jumped in to save us. In so doing He has done that which was humanly impossible: He has defeated death, the devil and sin.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, we give thanks for men of courage and commitment like Michael Patterson. Bless and be with this man who has made a great sacrifice for someone else. Most of all we rejoice in the Savior whose sacrifice is unique in human history. May we always be grateful for all Jesus has done to rescue us from the forces of evil. In His Name we pray. Amen.

LAST QUIZ: What did Jehu do to Baal worship?     (From Dianne Hance)2 Kings 10:23 -25   Jehu & Jehonadab the son of Recab went into the tmple of Baal.  Jehu said to the ministers of Baal,
Look around and see that no servants of the Lord are here with you--only ministers of Baal.  They went in to do the burnt offerings.  As soon as Jehu had finished making the burnt offering, he ordered the guards and officers to go and kill the men.  So they were cut down with the sword.  The bodies were thrown out.  Then they entered the temples of Baal
and brought the sacred stone out of the temple  and burned it.  They demolished the sacred stone of Baal and tore down the temple of Baal, and people have used it for a latrine to this day!

(From Pam Bueltmann) They brought the sacred stone out of the temple of Baal and burned it.  They demolished the sacred stone of Baal and tore down the temple of Baal and people have used it for a latrine to this day.  So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel.

Both very good answers!  Way to go ladies!

Danny Dreyer-  Army- 2nd Lieutenant- Ranger, GERMANY

Sam Hargrove- Army- 2 Lieutenant- Ft Rucker, Alabama, will be going through helicopter flight school and other training

Also, if you would like your family member or friend included in this list, please reply to this email with all the information!

Pray for these guys.  Some of these guys are in harm's way right now, others are training to put themselves in harm's way.  All of them have volunteered to serve and protect their country (which is you).

Pat King's cousin's surgery

Well, my cousin in Seattle finally was cleared for surgery, and had it today. Just got out of recovery a few minutes ago, and was promptly discharged – because that is how our new medical care works now. Anyway, despite having a "significant" blood loss during the surgery, they think her prognosis is good. The "tumor" they excised, was filled with clear fluid – pathology won't come back for another week – so they don't think it's a real tumor, like they first suspected. So, hopefully no cancer.
Anyway, she called me on her way to the pharmacy – to get some pain pills – and asked me to thank all of you for your prayers. She knows God heard and that is why everything went well. So thank you.
I told her I'd keep praying for her until after the path report comes back. So I will. Anyway, thank you all again.
Blessings on your day.

FW: Prayer request for the family of John Kopp

Please pray for the family of John Kopp.  John passed away on Tuesday, June 11th.

John had valiantly battled cancer over the past few years; but he took a horrible fall last week and sustained several broken bones and a severe head injury.  I haven't talked to Dorothy, his wife, yet; but I'm guessing that fall is what got him to heaven quicker than the advancing cancer.

He was a very interesting man with a great sense of humor.  He had a great faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and kept a very positive outlook throughout his illness.  He and Dorothy even kept on bowling and staying on the move.  Case in point - John took that fall as he was exiting a restaurant!  STILL on the go!  Looks like they will still have their family reunion this Saturday as planned - just in a different way; but still to celebrate John as a father.

Missionary Sending Service for Denise Schlesselmann

It isn't too often that we have members of our congregation who go out and do full time missionary work!  Denise Schlesselmann is doing just that!

I have attached a link that tells about the Missionary Sending Service at the LCMS International Center (Kirkwood Road - aka Lindbergh -  at I-44)  this FRIDAY - JUNE 14TH - 2 PM  in their Chapel there.

Guest parking lot is on the right side as you enter the center off of Kirkwood Rd.  You will need to go in through the front doors and sign in at the front desk.

There is a list of all the new missionaries and our Denise Schlessleman is on the list!

Please keep these folks, especially Denise in your prayers.  I'm sure it will be fun for us to hear all about her experience when she returns to us.

This event is open to anyone who wants to attend.
