Update on Jonas Borchert: Don Nolte's grandson

 
 

 

Hello again. : )

Thank you to everyone who came out to help fund raise for Jonas at Culver's Night. The restaurant was packed! Thank you to Shelli Cornell and Amy Westacott! You girls are-- The Bomb! (do people still say that?) You are goodness and joy wrapped in enthusiasm. And a Big thank you to Melissa Gouldsmith, Kathy Ryan, Donna Everett, Vicki White, Patty Voss, Debbie Cooper, Becky Morales, Dr. Pragman, and all the many other friends and teachers (I'm sorry to leave out so many names) who helped make this an incredibly successful fundraiser! Between the Culver's Night and the penny drive at school, they made an unbelievably large donation to our family. We thank you for that! We are overflowing with gratitude. Our savings was depleted long ago, and being a self-employed family makes for a greater challenge at times like these. I also cannot leave out the owners of Culvers and Chick-fil-a! Both owners, along with Shelli, Amy and Kathy, all took a PIE IN THE FACE for Jonas in front of the entire Elementary School. It was a wonderful event! Thank you to all the kids who made that possible by bringing in your pennies. And thank you all for your love and generosity. Looks like we have two new favorite restaurants, too!

Jonas has been feeling well enough these past few weeks to get out and mow the lawn, help with his baseball team's practices, and to go to a Royal's baseball game. Thank you to our friend and neighbor, Ryan Snyder, who landed Jonas the opportunity to meet Mariano Rivera before the Royals/Yankees game a few weeks ago. (Jonas's two favorite baseball teams!) Rivera is the #1 relief pitcher in baseball history and is retiring after this year. Last year he was pretty badly injured during a game right here in Kansas City. He could have retired THEN, but he wanted to play one more year and go out on his own terms, not stopped by his condition. Mariano was sharing his story of inspiration and love of baseball with people from the community and listening to folks share their own. Jonas told him about how he loves baseball and that he admires Mariano for his commitment to the sport, such a long career. Joel then told the group about how Jonas was in such pain in the beginning but showed up to his baseball games and just wanted to pitch, begged his coach to let him get just one more batter out. Anyway, several articles hit the newspapers around here and on MLB.com – here is a link to one of them. http://www.kansascity.com/2013/05/11/4230988/never-been-a-pitcher-quite-like.html Mariano gave Jonas several autographed baseballs and took his picture with him. (I will put it up in the photos.) Jonas was on cloud nine! Thank you so much Ryan. You have always been such a good friend to our son. Thank you for this, too.

Another thank you to our Timberlake Homeowners Book Club friends! They meet once a month and always share a big spread of food. We were so delighted when they shared casseroles and salads, cheeses and desserts with us a few weeks ago. Delicious! And you wouldn't believe how handy!!! It made that last week of chemotherapy so much easier for me. Marylin, Leita, Charlotte, and all my other book buddies – Thank you so much.

Jonas has now completed the control phase of his treatment. The initial chemo/radiation are behind us and he has had approximately two weeks off of treatment while his body tries to bounce back. Now we move on to stem cell harvesting. The first part of the harvesting involves getting the stem cells to mobilize from the bones to the periphery so that they can flood the bloodstream with stem cells when the time comes. Unfortunately, that means getting daily shots in the thigh between now and the harvest date next week. (One of the more stressful events in our household-- It is painful for Jonas and we have to give it to him ourselves here at home. Ouch!) It causes bone aches and flu-like symptoms. Not a good feeling in general. But on the flip-side he will harvest two to five million healthy stem cells that can be frozen for up to ten years, should he ever need a stem cell transplant.
Next week he will be hospitalized for the better part of the week. The following week he will have all his scans run again to see how much we have beaten back so far. Then, we march on toward the Clinical Trials. I will post more about that next week.

Hey!! I also hear that there is now an open gym night for Jonas at Dave's Gymnastics! So cool!

Does anyone have the picture of Jonas with Shelli and Amy after their pie in the face? Can you share it with me on FB or something? I want to share it, too.

Sorry about those annoying shots Jonas!! We'll be thinking about you and praying for you all next week while Jonas is in the hospital and getting the tests/scans. Thanks for the update!

Dave's Gymnastics Factory is hosting a fundraising open gym on June 8, 2013.

Jonas is a Lee's Summit student and brother of an employee at Dave's Gymnastics Factory. He was in remission from a rare form of cancer, but recently found out the cancer is back.

DGF will donate $6 for each child in attendance to Jonas. We will also have a donation basket available. Everyone is invited to come, bring friends and support a great cause!

All regular Open Gym Rules apply. For ages 4 to 12. $10 per child. Parents may watch from the balcony, but may not be in the gym area.

Thanks, again, for your uplifting update...the community is behind all the Borcherts because theirs is such an incredible journey. I am very optimistic that a great outcome will evolve, thanks to everyone's efforts and Jonas ' bravery and perseverance ! I saw Jonas a few days ago and was so amazed at how good he looks...his coloring is so much better and he seems stronger. This causes great optimism....and we all hope he goes from strength to strength. The Koshlands send their love to ALL the Borcherts! Marilyn

Summer Sunday School starts tomorrow

Summer Sunday School will be 9:45am -10:45am with Mrs. K.
 
It will be much like last year with a fun mini VBS type theme.
 
We will be doing the Fruits of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23
  
  22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 

Parents do you see a quality you would like your child(ren) to have more of. Come join us for some fun lessons, games, and snacks.

We will meet in the preschool room the whole time.

Also I will take any big kid helpers who want to show up too!!!

Please pray for Barbara Perricone who is hospitalized with breathing problems and a lung infection.  She will be at St. Joes, Lake St. Louis for a couple of days.

Also, the dates for the T-3  (Trap, Tackle, and Tees) Retreat are set for Fri- Sun, Sept 27-29.  Cost is $45 for the retreat and another $35 for golf.  I will talk more about this Saturday.

In thinking about June coming up which is traditionally the "wedding month", I ask for prayers for marriages everywhere that they stay strong and that ways are found, for people to look at themselves and try to give 100% to their marriages and their spouses to work through even the worst of situations. We need to look at ourselves and ask God to help us be a blessing to our spouses.  The old "be kind to one another" applies to our marriages most of all. 

 

I just know there are many, all over, that need prayers at this time.

"A New Lease" May 30, 2013 If a man dies, shall he live again? ... Job 14:14a ~ Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? ..." John 3:4a The questions of both Job and Nicodemus are probably rhetorical; that is, they didn't really expect to receive an answer. They didn't expect an answer because the answer to both questions is obvious: if you're dead, you're not going to live again -- at least not in this world. If you're old, it's impossible for you to be physically reborn. Even so, 34-year-old Brighton Dama Zanthe of Gweru, Zimbabwe, may not think those questions are all that rhetorical. Let me share a bit of his story. Zanthe had been sick for a long time. Eventually, the time came when he "shuffled off this mortal coil." The coroner was called, and he was declared dead. His mourning family made the necessary funeral arrangements. Zanthe's funeral was all perfectly normal, until some of the folks at the service noticed his legs were still twitching. The funeral was instantly stopped, and Zanthe was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where a skilled medical team, not surprisingly, overturned the coroner's report. In an interview with the local papers, Zanthe claims he can only remember being sick at home and then waking up in the hospital. Regretfully, he doesn't recall any of the fine and complimentary things the people said at his funeral. Looking back at what has happened, Zanthe says, "I was given another chance, and now I am alive." Now I have to confess, Zanthe wasn't totally and completely dead as Job talked about ... and he really wasn't born again the way Nicodemus meant. Still, Zanthe's "almost death" and "almost re-birth" is just about as close to a second lease on life as any of us are likely to get. Although the article doesn't say so, I would imagine Zanthe will be seeing and living his life in a different way. By that I mean some of the things that once seemed important are now inconsequential, and that which was insignificant is now of prime importance. It's a shame it often takes an emergency, a tragedy, or a death before our priorities get reordered. I pray that is not the case for you and that your loyalty is first and foremost to the Savior, whose life was given so you might have life. On the other hand, if you have a few items which might need to be tweaked, the story of Zanthe's almost death and almost rebirth might just give you the inspiration you need. In other words, Brighton's second chance might be yours as well. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, in gratitude to my Savior, today's prayer asks that You will create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. In the Savior's Name. Amen.

LITTLE LAMBS SUMMER CAMP

BOEING COMPANY PROLOGUE ROOM TOUR

An opportunity for adults and teens to have a guided tour of the Prologue Room with Ned Koprowski.  This tour is on Friday, June 28th.  We will leave the church parking lot at noon and carpool.  Reservations are required for the tour.  Plans are to have dinner somewhere after the tour.  Please sign the sheet in the narthex by Sunday, June 16 so that we can make the required reservation.

Habitat for Humanity project day June 15!

Habitat for Humanity, St. Charles, along with corporate sponsor Thrivent Builds, has scheduled the volunteers from St. John's Lutheran Church and the Warrenton community for a work day on Saturday, June 15.

Approximately  6  people from Warrenton will be needed to help install doors, windows, and siding.  Lunch and beverages will be provided.  In addition to our volunteers, we will be paired up with Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wentzville, to get a full crew.

Please contact Ron Harper, the Habitat volunteer coordinator, if you are able to participate on Saturday, June 15 from 8:00am-3:30pm.

OKLAHOMA TORNADO RELIEF

The LCMS asks for prayers and financial gifts to help those affected by the disaster.  The needs are going to be huge.  TO support the relief efforts, you may send your contributions directly to the LCMS or make it easier for you, make checks payable to St. John's and mark it "Oklahoma Tornado" and it will be forwarded.

Prayer of thanksgiving for RUTH YOCUM who is recovering well after suffering two broken legs earlier this year and spending much time in rehab for that.

 

 For LIL WINTER'S GRANDDAUGHTER'S FRIEND, who has G J D which is Protein in her brain drying up. Its like Alzheimer's but it's much faster. She is 34 yrs. old with 3 children, the oldest is 8 yrs. old. They say she will die within 6 mos.  

 

For those in Oklahoma who continue to recover after a devastating tornado and those who are laying to rest those who died as a result of it.

 

For DANNY DREYER who will be leaving for Germany tomorrow to begin his service as a 2nd Lieutenant in charge of a platoon.

 

For KARIN, GUS and CARA as they fly back home from NY today. .

 

For PAT KING'S COUSIN whose surgery was postponed due to heart palpitations and irregular heartbeat.

 

For PAUL TOEDEBUSCH, who will be having surgery June 14 to remove his bladder due to cancer

For RICK SPINIOLAS who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and will be beginning chemotherapy on Monday. 

For NANCY SPINIOLAS, his wife, who is dealing with severe back pain due to many years of using an artificial leg.

For RALPH SPOEDE who is dealing with cancer in both his kidney and in his brain. 

For DOMINIC GENTILE, a friend to many at church and in the community, who is suffering with brain cancer and is recovering from surgery.

For JONAS BORCHERT, grandson of Don Nolte, and Pat King's cousin on your prayers today as well. .

I have been compiling a list of servicemen who are members of St John's so that we can pray for them.  Below is a list of them and where they are currently stationed.  Please note that their stationing changes quickly, so this may not even be up to date, but it is the last known whereabouts that I have of these guys. 
 
Danny Dreyer-  Army- 2nd Lieutenant- Ranger, Ft. Benning, Georgia.
 
Sam Hargrove- Army- 2 Lieutenant- Ft Rucker, Alabama, will be going through helicopter flight school and other training
 
David Mincemeyer- Army- Army Specialist- Ft. Carson, CO
 
Jon Rahn- Navy- Hawaii, not sure of his rank at this time
 
David Tate- Air Force- 2nd Lieutenant- Jacksonville, Florida
 
Alex Walters- Navy- E4- Guam
 
Ryan Woolf- Air Force- Airman 1st Class- Buckley Air Force Base, near Denver, CO
 
 
If there are more out there that I just don't know about, please let me know, and I will include him/her on the list.
 
Also, if you would like your family member or friend included in this list, please reply to this email with all the information!
