Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

The salvation story of Jesus Christ reaches around the world. So that the readers of our Daily Devotion may see the power of the Savior on a global scale, we have asked the volunteers of our International Ministry Centers to write our Friday devotions. We pray that the Spirit may touch your day through their words.

Known as the "land of smiles," visitors to Thailand are immediately impressed by how polite and gracious the Thai people are. Although Thai people don't forge deep friendships quickly, once a relationship has been developed, it will never be broken.

Because more than 92 percent of the people in Thailand are Buddhists, the influence of the Buddhist religion can be seen in virtually all aspects of Thai culture. The beliefs and values of Buddhism are tightly interwoven throughout Thai society.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the myriad temples and shrines that can be found in every community across the country. Buddha statues, idols and images of other mythical beings are a common part of the décor. Whether made of wood or concrete or carved from stone, many Buddha figures are covered with gold.

It's not unusual to see Thai people kneeling before an image of Buddha or the idols that hold a prominent place in their homes. After placing gifts of food, a glass of water, or flowers on the altar, the Buddhist worshippers often light several incense sticks. With sincerity etched on their faces, they bow and repeat chants and prayers in the hope the smoke rising from the incense will somehow carry their requests to Buddha or their ancestors. At some shrines small pieces of gold leaf can be purchased and then attached to the Buddha figure as a special offering.

As a Christian, I experience conflicting emotions when I observe Buddhist people praying to idols and images made by the hands of people. I feel sadness to see such kind people speaking to figures that have ears, but can't hear, seeking assistance from images that have hands, but can't move. I feel compassion for them, because I know they are doing the only things they know to do.

At the same time, I feel joy and great gratitude I have a God who is alive, who is powerful to help, and who loves me. When I pray, God hears and answers. When I'm in need, He acts on my behalf. With His strong right arm, He guides and protects me. There is no other god like Him.

It's exciting to see how God is using the Lutheran Hour Ministries-Thailand team to share the Gospel with the Thai people through their radio programs, school outreach program, and other ministry activities. It's important for Thai Buddhists to hear from Thai Christians that Christianity is not a Western religion. Jesus died for their sins too.

THE PRAYER: Gracious God, send Your Holy Spirit to work in the hearts, minds and lives of the Thai people, who do not believe in Jesus as their Savior. Reveal Your truth to them. Give them the gift of faith and bring them into Your kingdom. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Biography of Author: Today's international devotion was written by Dennis Denow, a missionary with The Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod World Mission and the husband of LHM-Thailand Director Monta Ekwanit Denow. Denow volunteers to teach weekly English classes for the LHM-Thailand staff and occasionally assists with other LHM-Thailand projects. Lutheran Hour Ministries-Thailand focuses on sharing the Gospel and making contacts with local people through various community radio programs, Equipping The Saints (ETS) evangelism training, Bible Correspondence Courses (BCC), print, Internet and Gospel text messaging. The staff also conducts special children's activities and does presentations in government schools.

Please note that their stationing changes quickly, so this may not even be up to date, but it is the last known whereabouts that I have of these guys.

Danny Dreyer- Army- 2nd Lieutenant- Ranger school, In a swamp in Florida near Elgin Air Force Base, Pensacola, FL

Sam Hargrove- Army- 2 Lieutenant- Ft Rucker, Alabama, will be going through helicopter flight school and other training

David Mincemeyer- Army- Army Specialist- Ft. Carson, CO

Jon Rahn- Navy- Hawaii, not sure of his rank at this time

David Tate- Air Force- 2nd Lieutenant- Kirtland AF Base, Arizona

Alex Walters- Navy- E4- Guam

Ryan Woolf- Air Force- Airman 1st Class- Buckley Air Force Base, near Denver, CO

Proceeds from the outdoor parking space rentals and Little Lambs sale under the pavilion will benefit the preschool. They are raising funds for their new Summer Camp Programs and to enhance preschool. Please call the Little Lambs teachers or the church office to rent a parking space 456-2888

DEVOTION: "Whoever loves discipline, loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid." Proverbs 12:1

I have to acknowledge that I am at times an introvert. I tend to like quiet places and I am often not the first one to start a conversation or to reach out to someone. A lot of times I prefer to be alone. I have at times been accused of being impersonal, cold, and uncaring. I have many flaws, but this is one that continues to plague me. I would venture to say that it is not a good thing for a pastor to be a quiet introvert.

Since I have been told these things and have been corrected from time to time as to how this has caused trouble, I have been at least trying to work on it. I have made a conscience effort to be out there among the people as much as possible, to be more extroverted, to start conversations, and to show that I care more for people.

I wasn't fun to be told these things. I didn't like being told that I wasn't doing my job right. I got kind of angry when people told me that I was too introverted, but then I started to listen to what people said. I realized that this was God's way of correcting me and disciplining me. Otherwise I would just stay the way I am and nothing would get better.

No one likes reproof, rebuke or correction. Yet it is good for us and will produce fruits of righteousness. It is God's gift to us to keep us humble and keep us from thinking that we have everything under control.

Listen to those that you respect who are trying to tell you something. Listen when they tell you that you need to work on something or that they don't like it when you...... Listen to your loved ones and hear what they have to say. They really want to help you, and they really want you to be a better Christian, a better witness to His grace, mercy, and love.

Let us pray: Lord God, help us to listen to Your discipline, take it to heart and use Your gifts to be better Christians. Amen.

Please continue to pray for Dave Kohrs. he has been brought back to the hospital with a fever. He had gone home Saturday, but is back at Barnes in St. Louis.

DEVOTION: "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God." Mark 10:14

This past weekend I was with the junior high kids down at Camp Windermere near Camdenton, Mo. As always, it was a fabulous time. The kids didn't want to leave. They were Filled with the Holy Spirit as they worshipped the Lord, as they heard His Word, and as they learned all about how God is for Us.

It, once again, reminded me of the verse above from Mark 10:14. It is amazing to me how, when we take away the hindrances from the pathway of kids, how quickly and how much they can flourish in their faith. It was great to see many of them really getting into their praise and worship time. It was awesome to be able to pray with them and for them and to see them praying for each other! It was good to talk with them about their faith and the faith of others.

The trouble, as was mentioned by a few of the kids and even the speaker, is that a retreat only lasts for a weekend. It gets harder to flourish in faith when the kids go home because of the many temptations and because, at times even their own family and friends can be hindrances to their faith.

Jesus reminds us that, "Whoever causes one of these little ones to sin, it would be better for him to have a millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the sea."

This has only reinforced and increased my attitude and knowledge that we as a church are going on the right direction as we have our kids and youth as our main emphasis in this church! We MUST do everything we can to make sure that our children have every opportunity to grow in their faith.

My prayer for you as parents and as those who have connections with children is that you do not hinder the faith of your children, but that you do everything you can to help that faith to grow. That you do whatever it takes, spend whatever is necessary (especially time) and love them as much as you can!

And my promise to you is that I will help you and support you in your efforts as much and as often as I am able. I love those kids and I want to see them in heaven with me someday! You should too!

BY the way, we have some great kids at our church! They are well behaved, well mannered, but most of all they LOVE Jesus!

Let us pray: Lord God bless our children with a continued increase of faith, and help us as parents and other authorities to help and support that growth and keep from messing it up. Amen.

Going the way and sailing with Jesus as His disciples is not always an easy trip.

Indeed, it is a rare believer who can honestly say his or her life has been lived without thunder and lightning or without wind and wave. Often, and without warning, those storms of life come sweeping over the bow and gunnels of our ship, and we can be afraid.

Still, as our text shows, when Jesus is with us, we don't have to be afraid of the wind and waves. He who gave His life to save our souls is not going to forget our bodies. That is why I am convinced: with Holy Spirit-given faith I know that not even the most dangerous swells are able to swamp, sink or swallow me.

Still, you may be among those who wonder why it is God allows these storms to come. No doubt that is what the disciples felt in their little boat.

All I can tell you is what Scripture says: these trials and challenges make us, in some way, more mature. Although it may not seem so at the time, these things are part of God's providence, instruction and blessing.

A trial and challenge can, in some way, make us more mature. That is what Old Testament Joseph said to the brothers who, years before, had sold him into slavery. Although Joseph could have been embittered by the storms he had faced, he explained, "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today" (Genesis 50:20).

This is why, today I encourage you, in the trouble you are facing, to hold fast to your faith which says, Jesus is there to bless you. Believe that Jesus will send His Holy Spirit to bring us through every bad situation. If you do, you will find a storm is not a test, but a blessing by which God achieves His plan for us.

THE PRAYER: Lord, I pray for myself and all the church. May I be granted a faith which has learned to be content in whatever situation or storm I find myself. This I pray in Jesus' Name. Amen.

Biography of Author: Today's international devotion was written by South Korean Nam Sang Joon. Born in a Christian family, Nam Sang Joon wanted to be a pastor from early in childhood. He studied theology at Luther University. He has been working in churches in Daegu for 20 years. He is also a professor at Luther University teaching New Testament.
