URGENT PRAYER REQUEST From Toni Mauch

Prayers are needed for our nephew and his family.  First his one year-old daughter came down with a staph infection from teething and is being treated with antibiotics and doing better, upon her return home from the hospital his wife had to be taken to the ER and has been diagnosed with the same form of staff.  She is severely ill with it attacking her spine, lungs and they fear her heart and she is in extreme pain.   Her name is Carrie and the baby's name is Madison, our nephew is Daniel. They need prayer warriors!

DEVOTION: (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)
Then the devil ... said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down, for it is written, 'He will command His angels concerning You,' and 'On their hands they will bear You up, lest You strike Your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'" Matthew 4:5a, 6-7

Most of us don't deliberately do sinful things. We just do wrong things, which seemed right.

On the list of such individuals is Dean Suominen of Shorewood, Illinois. In January of 2012, Suominen did a little drinking; then he did a little driving. The data recorder in his car said he was going 142 miles an hour when his car hit the curb, rolled over, and clobbered a billboard. Suominen's car "disintegrated around him."

I'm not surprised.

What surprises me is that Suominen survived that accident with only minor injuries.

Now, if you asked Suominen, he probably would tell you he hadn't planned on doing all that stuff, nor had he planned on making his guardian angels work overtime. With his judgment clouded by booze, Suominen did some wrong things, which seemed right at the time.

He's not alone. When Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree, Satan succeeded in tempting them to do a wrong thing, which seemed right. When Abraham lied about his marriage status with Sara, it was a wrong thing, which had seemed right. When Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery, it was a wrong thing, which seemed right. When David ... well, you get the idea.

Most of us do wrong things, which seem right; most of us, but not all of us. You see, Jesus never fell for that kind of twisted temptation. When Satan urged Jesus to toss Himself off the pinnacle of the temple, it would have been the wrong thing to do. Still, at the time, it might have seemed right. After all, the worshippers would have seen Jesus' miracle. Word of what He had done would get around and maybe, just maybe, Jesus wouldn't have to die, as the prophets had predicted.

The devil hoped he could derail Jesus' work of saving us, by making a wrong thing seem right.

Now, the truth is just because the devil failed at tempting Jesus this way, it doesn't mean he stopped using this well-worn and most useful tool. If you take a look at your life, you will see a great many times when Satan has come and tempted you this way. Of course, you didn't want to sin, but Satan gave you reasons -- seemingly good reasons -- for you to proceed the way you did.

Today, in retrospect, we can see what happened.

Hopefully, we can learn from what happened and avoid a repetition. This is why I encourage you to listen only to the Savior, whose life was given for your forgiveness. Pay attention to the Holy Spirit, who wants us to walk the narrow path of God's will and way. If we do that, we may find ourselves avoiding the devil's suggestions to do the wrong thing, for what seems like the right reason.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, give me a strong faith and some commonsense. Help me to reject the devil when he encourages me to do the wrong thing for the right reason. At such times, may I trust You and avoid tempting the Lord my God. This I pray in Jesus' Name and after His example. Amen

DEVOTION:  "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."  Mark 16:15

You know how when you google something and it gives you a list of different websites and things to look up how you usually don't go beyond the first couple listings.  Well, the other day I heard that there are actual marketing people whose sole job it is to get a business or an individual higher up on that page.  That's all they do all day is work on getting it up there so that it gets more looks and hits so that the company can get more business.

I wish we had something like that for St. John's.  With the large number of Christian churches in this relatively small town it is hard to stay at the top of someone's page.  To tell you the truth, it is hard for St. John's to stay at the top of it's own members' pages a lot of the time.

So my question and challenge for you is this:  Are your brothers and sisters at St. John's and the whole community of believers at the top of the page or is the church on page 3 or 4 or 10?   What page is it on when it comes to your friends and family out in the community?  Are they even searching for it at all?  Is it on anyone's radar?

According to the verse above, our job as disciples  is to go into our communities and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.  This includes talking up your church, inviting people to worship, caring for people in need, loving people with the Gospel, and forgiving people of their sins.  Our job is to get Jesus and His body of believers at St. John's on the top of people's lists.

In order for that to happen with you in your life it has to be high enough in your heart and mind for you to want to get it out to others.  What is it going to take for that to happen?  Is there something I can do as your pastor to get it up there?  Is there something you need to be doing more or less of for that to happen?  What is it going to take?

Let us pray:  Lord God, bless our church that we may become a light in the darkness for many who are lost, that we might do more proclaiming of the Gospel to the whole creation and that this church and Christianity all together might grow.  Amen.

DEVOTION:   At that time Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel,
 "Sun, stand still at Gibeon,
and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon."
And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.
Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day. There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD heeded the voice of a man, for the LORD fought for Israel.
(Joshua 10:12-14 ESV)

Did you know this little story from the Old Testament?  It just goes to show you that if God is for you nothing can stop Him.  Lots can stop you, but nothing can stop Him.

The story before this is about how God had told the Israelites to totally destroy all of the nations before Him.  He didn't ant any foreign influences and especially foreign, false gods, to infiltrate His people.  But guess what, the Israelites didn't listen.  They were tricked with a ruse by the Gibeonites, and it caused problems for them from that time on.

I have often wondered what my life would be like if I would do God's will every single time.  What if I did what God wanted me to do every minute of ever day?  How much different would my life be?  How many times would I have avoided the pain and guilt of my mistakes?  How much better would everything in my life be?

But that's not the reality.  The reality is that I fail every day.  The reality is that I fail to do God's will a whole lot more than I do it.

The other reality is a much more positive one though.  The other reality is that God is still on our side and He will not let the sun go down on our life without saving us from our enemy, the devil.  Because of our selfishness, and foolishness, we will often lose battles, but He will not let us lose the war.  The war is already won by His Son's suffering, death, and resurrection.

Let us pray:  Lord God, help me to do better daily in doing Your will, but when I fail keep the sun up for me so that you may fight for me and win!  Amen.

DEVOTION:  (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)

Jesus said) "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 7:12

Down in Texas, Coronado and Franklin High Schools are rivals. Big time.

Coronado's coach, Peter Morales, knew that. Even so, he wanted to give a special moment to the team's manager, senior Mitchell Marcus. For three years Marcus, a young man with a learning disability, had been Coronado's manager and his comrade's chief cheerleader. Even though Marcus couldn't play on the team, his faithfulness under adversity had made him an inspiration.

As a thank-you, Coach Morales gave Marcus a uniform to be worn during the team's practice -- and at the big game. Marcus was in seventh heaven. But Coach Morales wasn't done. With two minutes left in the game, he put Marcus out on the court and told him to stand under the basket.

Again and again, Marcus' team threw him the ball. Again and again, his shot went wide, or high, or short. The last time, with a few seconds left to play, Marcus touched the pass thrown to him and the ball went out of bounds. Franklin had possession. Marcus' chance to score was over.

Down in Texas, high schools have some big-time rivalries. Even so, in many places Jesus is bigger.

Standing near his own basket, Franklin senior, Jon Martinez, put the ball into play. But before he did, he called out Marcus' name. In the closing seconds of the big rivalry game, Martinez tossed the ball directly to his opponent, to Marcus. Unopposed, he turned and made the shot.

When he was asked why he would do such a thing, Martinez, a Christian, said, "I was brought up to do unto others as I want them to do to me."

Yup, in many places high school basketball is a big thing, but in many places Jesus is bigger, and He is glorified by His people.

You see, Coach Morales, who was willing to lose a game to give Marcus "his moment," was a winner, as was his team, which kept feeding Marcus the ball. But the selfless action of the Franklin team also made them winners as well.

In these Daily Devotions I often write about crime and the spiritual sickness brought about by sin. Today I wanted to share with you what can happen when Christians respond to the love they have received from the Savior, the Savior who came to this earth to change us. Through His life-offering, Jesus paid the price for our sins and offered us forgiveness and heaven.

But Jesus' gifts are not just for the afterlife. By the Holy Spirit's power, believers are given a new heart and a right spirit. Wishing to glorify their Redeemer, they are empowered to do things which the world would never think of. They love their enemy, and they give the basketball to an opponent, who has a learning disability.

They do unto others as they want others to do for them, as Jesus has already done for them.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, You have given me eternal life and a new heart. May that heart be empowered to do the good thing which brings glory to the Savior and benefits all around me. This I ask in the Name of my sacrificing Savior. Amen.
