DEVOTION: Numbers 32:1-31
Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock. So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation, "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, the land that the LORD struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock." And they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan."
But Moses said to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben, "Shall your brothers go to the war while you sit here? Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the LORD has given them? Your fathers did this, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the LORD had given them. And the LORD's anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying, 'Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me, none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the LORD.' And the LORD's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was gone. And behold, you have risen in your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel! For if you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people."
Then they came near to him and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, but we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance. For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east." So Moses said to them, "If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war, and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him and the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out. Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised." And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben said to Moses, "Your servants will do as my lord commands. Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead, but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord orders."
So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel. And Moses said to them, "If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben, every man who is armed to battle before the LORD, will pass with you over the Jordan and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession. However, if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan." And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, "What the LORD has said to your servants, we will do.

My momma always told me, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.  Unfortunately too many times I haven't listened to her advice.  Too many times I have had that dreaded foot in mouth disease.  It is a terrible and awful thing that has done nothing but ruin relationships and cause problems.

I know this is a long reading about a rather obscure Bible story, but it is very interesting.  Did you notice the misunderstanding here in this reading?  The leaders of the tribes of Reuben and Gad wanted to give their women and children a safe place to live and a place for their flocks and herds to graze and grow, so they decided that it would be best if they took the land east of the Jordan, the land that wasn't considered the Promised Land but was still very good.
Moses thought they were just doing this so they wouldn't have to go over and fight all the people in the Promised Land.  He thought they were chicken and didn't want to fight anymore, which wasn't the case at all.  They really wanted that land and wanted to keep their families safe from the fighting.
Even good people like Moses have misunderstandings.  Even good people fail to observe the part of the explanation of the 8th commandment that says that we should "explain everything in the kindest way" or as the old version goes, "put the best construction on everything".
Boy, do we need to observe this more often as Christians in our own world still today!!  Even as Christians, we tend to expect the worst of people.  We tend to put the worst construction on everything.  We tend to be the first to criticize and judge when someone does something we think they shouldn't do.  Then we get upset when someone does the same thing to us.
All of us need to keep from bearing false or unnecessary bad witness against our neighbor.  We need to stop saying bad things about people!  We need to emphasize the good and diminish the bad.  We need to quit looking for the wrong things in each other or eventually the world isn't going to listen to us Christians at all anymore. .  ALL OF US NEED TO DEFEND OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST, SPEAK WELL OF THEM, AND EXPLAIN EVERYTHING IN THE KINDEST WAY!

Let us pray:  Lord God, when I don't know all of the facts, help me from speaking out of turn.  When I have opportunity to say something bad about someone, help me to keep my mouth shut.  And when I don't have anything nice to say, help me not to say anything at all.  Amen.

WEDNESDAY'S QUIZ: Who were the two guys who got to enter the Promised Land from the old generation of the Israelites?
The Lord told Moses to send some men to explore the land of Canaan.  Moses sent 12 men.  Ten men told lies about the new land but Caleb and Joshua told the truth.  That is
why they were the only two men of the older generation to see the Promised Land.   Here we go with the 40 years again.  Israelites were forced to wonder the desert for 40
years.    The children of the older generation , Caleb and Joshua were allowed to see the Promised Land.  All the others died in the desert.  Good job Dianne!  Doug was close, but only got one right!

DEVOTION:  (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)

And He (Jesus) went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. So His fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought Him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and He healed them. Matthew 4:23-24

A week or so ago, the U.S. Senate put out a report which said that, because of the millions of people who will soon be getting health care, America needs 16,000 more primary care physicians.

The good news is that a panel, the National Health Care Workforce Commission, has been designated to meet that need. The bad news is that, as of this writing, the commission has not been funded, nor have they met.

Sometimes that is the incomplete way a bureaucracy can work or -- in this case -- not work.

That is not the way it was for Jesus. In the fourth chapter of Matthew, we hear of how Jesus' health care system did its job. The evangelist wrote that Jesus healed "every disease and every affliction." Then, lest anyone miss the impact of his words, Matthew got specific. He says they brought Jesus all the sick, that is, those who had various diseases and pains, those who were oppressed by demons, those who were epileptics, and those who were paralyzed.

Then Matthew simply states, "And He (Jesus) healed them."

Period.

There was no time set aside for recuperation, no ongoing medications prescribed, no long-term recovery, no occupational or physical therapists called in, no follow-up visits with the doctor. To show to everyone He was the promised Messiah, Jesus healed all those who were brought to Him.

Today He continues to offer spiritual healing to all who come to Him in faith. Do you have a troubled conscience brought on by some sin? Do you feel unappreciated and unloved? Do you worry about what will happen after you die?

When the Holy Spirit brings people who are burdened with such questions to Jesus, they will find the Savior heals. Those who are troubled become confident their sins were carried by Jesus and have been erased. Those who feel forgotten know their Lord not only remembers them, but loves them. Those who wonder about eternity are reassured Jesus has died, risen and welcomes believers into heaven.

The Bible says, "They brought Him all the sick ... and He healed them." Today, as believers we can add, "The Holy Spirit brings sinners, whose souls are sick with sin to Jesus, and He forgives them."

It is a miracle for which we should give thanks. It is a miracle that explains why Jesus is a primary health care physician unlike any other.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, for being the great Physician of both body and soul I give thanks. May I bring all my cares before You and know that You will take care of me completely, totally, eternally. This I ask in Your Name. Amen.

Here is a link to a video of our Synod President's response about his letter to the Pastor in Newtown.  I think it is very well done by President Harrison and should be watched.

DEVOTION:  (A warning: some of the subject matter in the reading for today may not be suitable for younger readers.  Use your best discretion parents.)
Numbers 25:1-8
While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. And the LORD said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people and hang them in the sun before the LORD, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel." And Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor."
And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped.

Here's the deal folks.  God doesn't look kindly on false worship.  He hates it when people are worshiping other gods beside Him. He abhors it when we put other gods in front of Him or when we make other gods equal to Him.  I don't know how else to put it.  There is only one God!  His name is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The first commandment is "You shall have no other gods before me."  All of the other commandments hinge on this one.

Did you read what happened when the Israelites did what they did?  God told them not to and they did it anyway so they suffered the consequences of their sin.  As drastic and as serious as this tory may seem, it is nothing compared to what will happen to those who worship false gods and do not believe in the true God after they die.

What are the false gods in your life that are taking you further and further away from the one true God?  Is it your money?  Is it your time?  Is it your comfort or your convenience?  Is it your pride?  Is it your own judgment of others?  Whatever it is know that the Lord doesn't like it.  He hates it.  He abhors it!

Now also know that He gives you a way out of it.  He gives you Himself.  Tomorrow night you will have a real physical and spiritual way to bring those sins in your life that are dragging you down, to the forefront and literally put a sign of them on your forehead.  Then you will be able to leave them there at God's altar.  I urge you to come to worship tomorrow night so that you may find relief from your sins through God's grace!  That the plague of sin in your life may be stopped and you may be refreshed and renewed in HIM!!
Let us pray:  Lord God, help me to realize the serious of my sins and that they only bring me further away from You.  Then help me to give them up to You so that my soul may be refreshed daily by You.  Amen.

Update on Josiah Tuley

We got up at 4:00 this morning to get ready and gave Josiah his medicine at 4:30. He couldn't have applesauce, so he had jello. It was harder to mix the medicine in, but it worked pretty well. He seemed to like it. We left a little before 5 and made it to the hospital at 5:30. It was close to 6:30 before we were registered and soon after we were called back to the room. It was going pretty quickly until they were interrupted with an emergency surgery. Josiah's surgery was pushed back and they allowed him to have a drink of water. He was tired so went to sleep pretty quickly after. The Doctor came in and explained the procedure and showed us what the port looked like.

I snuggled with Josiah and even slept a little I think. The oncology nurse came in to get the consent for chemo paperwork and talked with us about the plans for Monday. Because of Josiah's Diabetes Insipidus and the extra fluid that he will receive through an IV during chemo, he will need to be admitted into the PICU (Pediatric ICU) both during and after his chemo treatments. We were hoping that he would only need to have his treatment as an inpatient for the first few times and then switch to outpatient. While we are unsure of how everything will go, it looks like we may be admitted into the hospital for each of his treatments.

We have a better understanding of Josiah's treatment plan as well. The first 12 weeks are called the induction phase, and after the MRI will be his maintenance treatment. My understanding was that this meant every 3 weeks, BUT his treatments will still be weekly during this time with an occasional week of rest. (I have more to understand, but that's in 3 months, so I'm not worried about all those details right now!) The maintenance treatments will last about a year. The treatment should be enough to kill the tumor, and after the year treatment he should be back to normal.

Josiah woke up at about 8:45 and they came to get him to take him back to the OR at 8:50. At 9:40 we had an update that they had started about 10 minutes before and that the wire was though the vein and they were ready to make a pocket for the port to fit into. At 10:45 we were told that he has been taken to recovery and the Dr. would be out soon. The Dr. came out at 10:50 and we were able to go back and see Josiah at 11:50. He was pretty upset, but was happy to see us and drank some juice and kept it down. They took his IV out and we were able to go. We left for home at 12:45. When we got home he was pretty happy. He had some graham crackers then I laid down with him and we both took a nap. The kids got home from school and then Nathan took them back to school for parent teacher conferences. They're both doing great at school! They also went to the book fair and each picked out a book, so after we ate supper and had baths, we read their books for the rest of the evening.
