DEVOTION: (A warning: some of the subject matter in the reading for today may not be suitable for younger readers. Use your best discretion parents.) Numbers 25:1-8 While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. And the LORD said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people and hang them in the sun before the LORD, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel." And Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor." And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped. Here's the deal folks. God doesn't look kindly on false worship. He hates it when people are worshiping other gods beside Him. He abhors it when we put other gods in front of Him or when we make other gods equal to Him. I don't know how else to put it. There is only one God! His name is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first commandment is "You shall have no other gods before me." All of the other commandments hinge on this one. Did you read what happened when the Israelites did what they did? God told them not to and they did it anyway so they suffered the consequences of their sin. As drastic and as serious as this tory may seem, it is nothing compared to what will happen to those who worship false gods and do not believe in the true God after they die. What are the false gods in your life that are taking you further and further away from the one true God? Is it your money? Is it your time? Is it your comfort or your convenience? Is it your pride? Is it your own judgment of others? Whatever it is know that the Lord doesn't like it. He hates it. He abhors it! Now also know that He gives you a way out of it. He gives you Himself. Tomorrow night you will have a real physical and spiritual way to bring those sins in your life that are dragging you down, to the forefront and literally put a sign of them on your forehead. Then you will be able to leave them there at God's altar. I urge you to come to worship tomorrow night so that you may find relief from your sins through God's grace! That the plague of sin in your life may be stopped and you may be refreshed and renewed in HIM!! Let us pray: Lord God, help me to realize the serious of my sins and that they only bring me further away from You. Then help me to give them up to You so that my soul may be refreshed daily by You. Update on Josiah Tuley
We got up at 4:00 this morning to get ready and gave Josiah his medicine at 4:30. He couldn't have applesauce, so he had jello. It was harder to mix the medicine in, but it worked pretty well. He seemed to like it. We left a little before 5 and made it to the hospital at 5:30. It was close to 6:30 before we were registered and soon after we were called back to the room. It was going pretty quickly until they were interrupted with an emergency surgery. Josiah's surgery was pushed back and they allowed him to have a drink of water. He was tired so went to sleep pretty quickly after. The Doctor came in and explained the procedure and showed us what the port looked like.
I snuggled with Josiah and even slept a little I think. The oncology nurse came in to get the consent for chemo paperwork and talked with us about the plans for Monday. Because of Josiah's Diabetes Insipidus and the extra fluid that he will receive through an IV during chemo, he will need to be admitted into the PICU (Pediatric ICU) both during and after his chemo treatments. We were hoping that he would only need to have his treatment as an inpatient for the first few times and then switch to outpatient. While we are unsure of how everything will go, it looks like we may be admitted into the hospital for each of his treatments.
We have a better understanding of Josiah's treatment plan as well. The first 12 weeks are called the induction phase, and after the MRI will be his maintenance treatment. My understanding was that this meant every 3 weeks, BUT his treatments will still be weekly during this time with an occasional week of rest. (I have more to understand, but that's in 3 months, so I'm not worried about all those details right now!) The maintenance treatments will last about a year. The treatment should be enough to kill the tumor, and after the year treatment he should be back to normal.
Josiah woke up at about 8:45 and they came to get him to take him back to the OR at 8:50. At 9:40 we had an update that they had started about 10 minutes before and that the wire was though the vein and they were ready to make a pocket for the port to fit into. At 10:45 we were told that he has been taken to recovery and the Dr. would be out soon. The Dr. came out at 10:50 and we were able to go back and see Josiah at 11:50. He was pretty upset, but was happy to see us and drank some juice and kept it down. They took his IV out and we were able to go. We left for home at 12:45. When we got home he was pretty happy. He had some graham crackers then I laid down with him and we both took a nap. The kids got home from school and then Nathan took them back to school for parent teacher conferences. They're both doing great at school! They also went to the book fair and each picked out a book, so after we ate supper and had baths, we read their books for the rest of the evening.

DEVOTION: Matthew 18:15-18 "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Many of you have read the article in Saturday's newspaper about Pastor Morris who participated in a community prayer vigil in Newtown, CT after the tragedy that happened there. Many of you were outraged at what was reported. Most of you don't think that President Harrison was right in doing what he did. Many others are outraged that there is such a group at The Brothers of John the Steadfast, an ultra-conservative group within the MO Synod. The trouble is that this should've never been an issue. As so often happens with sinners who are also members of what we call the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, people spoke out of turn and discussed something that was only supposed to be a matter between two or three people. The Brothers of John the Steadfast should not have spoken publicly about it as they did, and the newspapers that published what they did shouldn't have done so either. The people involved actually did what they were supposed to do, but once the matter got out all hell broke loose. If you want to know what was said by each of them, you can go to the links below. If a matter is settled between Christians it is settled. It need not go any further.
Throughout our own church and the whole Synod there is the whole spectrum of views on the matter. I thought it had been settled back in 2001 when the New York District President did the same exact thing after 9/11. But I guess not. Anyway, most of us are in the middle on this issue. We don't think that we should pray with people who are praying to a different God. That's what Muslims, Jews, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, and so many others are doing. Our God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit compels us to pray to Him and to Him alone. When we pray with others who don't believe in the Triune God we are clouding our witness to the one true God. At the same time we cannot hinder our witness to Christ or our care for others because there are other religions present. As far as I am concerned it is a matter of conscience for the pastor involved and every situation is different.
I have no problem praying with other Christians. In fact, I have many non-Lutheran Christian friends with whom I pray every day. We care for each other and pray for each other and with each other. You can do that as long as you are all praying to the same God. You can't when you aren't.
Anyway, back to my original point. If someone had a problem with Pastor Morris's participation in this event he or she should have spoken to him personally and privately. Otherwise he should have kept his mouth shut. Matthew 18 bears this out fully! Read it! Learn it! Study it! Memorize it! Follow it! It will save you a lot of heartache in the end!
Lastly, lest you think that your church body, the LCMS, is rotten and you should leave it immediately and go to a different church body, just know that every church has its disagreements. Every church has its troubles. Every church with as many members as the LCMS is going to disagree. Don't think that your denomination is any better or worse than any other. It is made up of sinners, and guess what, sinners sin, they are imperfect, and they don't always do the right thing.
Anyways, since I had many who asked my opinion on this yesterday, and as there were many who were greatly upset by the article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, I thought that this would be the best place to do talk about it to reach the most of you.
By the way, if anyone has a problem with what I am doing or how I am being your pastor, I would appreciate it if you would talk to me about it, just me and you alone so that we can get the matter cleared up. As you have seen in this matter, grumbling about things with others really does no one any good. If anyone should know, it is me, your sinful, human pastor.
Let us pray: Lord God, help us to follow Your word when it comes to those who sin against us and those with whom we have disagreements. Help us also to work toward continued spirit of unity in the bond of peace that comes from the Holy Spirit. DEVOTION: And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this He has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus .... Acts 13:32-33a How would you feel if you bought a dozen eggs and there were only 11 in the carton? How would you react if you purchased a dozen doughnuts and the bag held only 11? Would you feel gypped? Hornswoggled? Duped and Deceived? If so, you can understand why people in New Jersey and Chicago have begun a class-action suit against Subway® sandwiches. One of the men went to 17 different restaurants and found that not a single one of the foot-long sandwiches he bought measured a full foot long. Most of the meals came in somewhere around 11 inches. The argument is this: a sandwich which is an inch short may not be a big deal, but when you multiply that inch by millions of sandwiches sold, it is a nasty bit of false advertising. Maybe those fellows have a point. Maybe we shouldn't be so accepting of manufacturers' untrue claims. Maybe Subway ought to state, "A foot-long sandwich may fall somewhat short of being a foot long." Yes, I know it loses its ring, but the advertising and the sandwich would match up, and the company would be keeping their promise. Truth in advertising. Have you ever given thanks to the Lord that the things He has said, the claims He has made, the promises He has offered are true? It is a quality which makes the Triune God -- and Christianity -- unique. Consider how many other deities have said, "I will send my Son into this world to become a human being. He will live for you; He will suffer for you; He will carry your sins, and He will die your death. All this will happen, so all who believe on Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and be reconciled with Me"? Only Christianity can make such a claim. Only Christianity can say, "We have good news. The promises our divine Lord made to Adam, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob have come to pass in the life, death and victorious resurrection of God's Son, Jesus. Only our faith can say God has kept His promises because Jesus, having lived a perfect life, was condemned and crucified on Calvary's cross. Only our faith can say, "A risen Christ is proof that God has not advertised falsely." Yes, our faith can say those things, and each of us ought to be saying those things. We need to tell a lost and condemned world that the Lord, His Word, His Son's sacrifice and victory are true and can be believed. Period. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks Your Word is true and can be believed. I rejoice that Holy Scripture contains no false advertising. Now may I point the unbelieving world toward the Savior who alone is God's fulfilled promise, who offers salvation. In Jesus' Name. Acts 13:32-33a How would you feel if you bought a dozen eggs and there were only 11 in the carton? How would you react if you purchased a dozen doughnuts and the bag held only 11? Would you feel gypped? Hornswoggled? Duped and Deceived? If so, you can understand why people in New Jersey and Chicago have begun a class-action suit against Subway® sandwiches. One of the men went to 17 different restaurants and found that not a single one of the foot-long sandwiches he bought measured a full foot long. Most of the meals came in somewhere around 11 inches. The argument is this: a sandwich which is an inch short may not be a big deal, but when you multiply that inch by millions of sandwiches sold, it is a nasty bit of false advertising. Maybe those fellows have a point. Maybe we shouldn't be so accepting of manufacturers' untrue claims. Maybe Subway ought to state, "A foot-long sandwich may fall somewhat short of being a foot long." Yes, I know it loses its ring, but the advertising and the sandwich would match up, and the company would be keeping their promise. Truth in advertising. Have you ever given thanks to the Lord that the things He has said, the claims He has made, the promises He has offered are true? It is a quality which makes the Triune God -- and Christianity -- unique. Consider how many other deities have said, "I will send my Son into this world to become a human being. He will live for you; He will suffer for you; He will carry your sins, and He will die your death. All this will happen, so all who believe on Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and be reconciled with Me"? Only Christianity can make such a claim. Only Christianity can say, "We have good news. The promises our divine Lord made to Adam, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob have come to pass in the life, death and victorious resurrection of God's Son, Jesus. Only our faith can say God has kept His promises because Jesus, having lived a perfect life, was condemned and crucified on Calvary's cross. Only our faith can say, "A risen Christ is proof that God has not advertised falsely." Yes, our faith can say those things, and each of us ought to be saying those things. We need to tell a lost and condemned world that the Lord, His Word, His Son's sacrifice and victory are true and can be believed. Period. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks Your Word is true and can be believed. I rejoice that Holy Scripture contains no false advertising. Now may I point the unbelieving world toward the Savior who alone is God's fulfilled promise, who offers salvation. In Jesus' Name. A great time is planned for August 23-25 as we head to the Creation Museum just south of Cincinnati, Ohio. We will be making a stop at the Abraham Lincoln National Historic Site in Kentucky on the way. Along with the creation museum on Saturday, we will also enjoy a comedy on the Showboat majestic in the evening. On Sunday we will tour the national museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. As usual, cost will depend on the number of people going. As of now it should run about $350 per person, plus meals, or $506 a couple. If you are interested in this trip, please sign the sheet on the counter in the narthex. Lenten Series
Lent begins in nine 9 days! I know! I didn't realize it until last Friday myself. Anyways, you may be wondering what we are gong to focus on during our Wednesday Lenten services. We are going to focus on:
