Prayer for Christian Wenzel
Mr. Wenzel is having back surgery today. Please pray for successful surgery and speedy recovery.
Update on Josiah Tuley
We had our visit with the oncologist today. It went really well. I'll try to put all the information here; but in case you're not interested in the many details, long story short: Josiah will have surgery on Thursday to put his port in, and his weekly chemotherapy treatments will start next Monday. He will be kept overnight for the first few treatments for monitoring.

All about chemotherapy:
Josiah will start his chemotherapy next Monday, February 11th. This will be the first of weekly treatments for 3 months. This time period is the intensive treatment. In 3 months Josiah will have another MRI and if all looks good, he will receive maintenance chemo every three weeks. During his treatments he will be able to play and eat, and we will even be able to walk around the hospital if we want. They also have a nice playroom in their office. Basically, at each visit they will draw blood to check blood cell count, platelet count and sugar/salt levels. If all that looks good he will have IV fluids, then his chemo treatment (about an hour) and more IV fluids following. Because of the pituitary gland deficiencies, Josiah will receive the chemo treatment and then be admitted into the hospital overnight for observation. If the first 2-3 visits go well, we will be able to do the rest of the treatments on an outpatient basis and can go home the same day.
The purpose of chemotherapy is to stop or slow the growth of the tumor until radiation can be done. In a small percentage of patients chemo is enough to kill the tumor completely, but it usually only stops/slows the growth. Why not do radiation now? In addition to killing the tumor, radiation may also kill all the surrounding good cells that are still developing, which would cause Josiah to have brain damage, resulting in a wide variety of disabilities. If the chemotherapy will stop the growth until he is at least 3, but preferably 5 or 6, then his brain will be more fully developed and the effects of radiation will be lessened. If the tumor continues to be aggressive (chemo not working), then they will go ahead and do radiation.
The main side effects of the chemotherapy are constipation, hair loss and sickness. For constipation, they will give medicine to help. Hair loss: not much we can do about it. Sickness: In general, they said that kids are much more resilient and usually do not get near as sick as adults tend to be. While he may throw up, we were told that kids will throw up and then go right on back to playing like nothing even happened. That was encouraging to us. Josiah will also receive anti-nausea medication before his treatment, and we will have some available to us at home if needed.
Another question we had was about this tumor being "slow-growing." This tumor is a slow-growing tumor when compared to other types of tumors. While Josiah's tumor grew seemingly fast to us, fast growing tumors can grow to three times the size it was originally in the same amount of time. Josiah's tumor is still small enough to not cause any symptoms.
Other Questions:
Insurance: We do have wonderful health insurance through Nathan's employer and have had no problems with coverage.
Many people have asked about getting a second opinion. Right now, we do not feel that is the best option for Josiah, or for our family. We addressed this at the appointment, and we were encouraged to get a second opinion if that is what we felt we needed to do. We were also told that our doctors pull from the same national database of protocols for treating cancer as all the other cancer centers use. While the exact treatment plan may differ with each doctor, all will use the chemo drugs that is in Josiah's plan. Our doctor alone had two or three treatment plans to choose from, and he and his team worked together to choose the plan that they felt would work the best for Josiah. We are very happy with our oncologist and his team, the location is perfect with Nathan being at work only a few minutes away, and we see no reason to prolong Josiah's treatment. Along these lines, if, for some reason this treatment does not work, there is a specialist in Chicago that we would most likely be referred to.
What do we need? Your prayers. :) We are truly grateful for our very large support system. We appreciate each and every one of you! While this is a very trying time for us, God's blessings are seen all around us, every day. I look back at different decisions and steps along our way during the past four months, and I see God's hand in the details. God has blessed us with our family, our friends, the amazing doctors that we have, with Josiah being with us, continuing to grow and learn and get better, and with our other three kiddos who are flexible and understanding. It has not been easy by any stretch of the imagination, but when we first heard the news on Wednesday that chemotherapy was needed and I dreaded even the thought, just five days and lots of prayer later, I'm ready for the next steps and am at peace with all the decisions that have been made. Please be assured, that when the time comes, we will let our needs be known. Right now, we aren't sure what to expect or what we need and are trying to soak up all the information that has been given to us. Thank you, again.

Acts 13:32-33a How would you feel if you bought a dozen eggs and there were only 11 in the carton? How would you react if you purchased a dozen doughnuts and the bag held only 11? Would you feel gypped? Hornswoggled? Duped and Deceived? If so, you can understand why people in New Jersey and Chicago have begun a class-action suit against Subway® sandwiches. One of the men went to 17 different restaurants and found that not a single one of the foot-long sandwiches he bought measured a full foot long. Most of the meals came in somewhere around 11 inches. The argument is this: a sandwich which is an inch short may not be a big deal, but when you multiply that inch by millions of sandwiches sold, it is a nasty bit of false advertising. Maybe those fellows have a point. Maybe we shouldn't be so accepting of manufacturers' untrue claims. Maybe Subway ought to state, "A foot-long sandwich may fall somewhat short of being a foot long." Yes, I know it loses its ring, but the advertising and the sandwich would match up, and the company would be keeping their promise. Truth in advertising. Have you ever given thanks to the Lord that the things He has said, the claims He has made, the promises He has offered are true? It is a quality which makes the Triune God -- and Christianity -- unique. Consider how many other deities have said, "I will send my Son into this world to become a human being. He will live for you; He will suffer for you; He will carry your sins, and He will die your death. All this will happen, so all who believe on Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and be reconciled with Me"? Only Christianity can make such a claim. Only Christianity can say, "We have good news. The promises our divine Lord made to Adam, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob have come to pass in the life, death and victorious resurrection of God's Son, Jesus. Only our faith can say God has kept His promises because Jesus, having lived a perfect life, was condemned and crucified on Calvary's cross. Only our faith can say, "A risen Christ is proof that God has not advertised falsely." Yes, our faith can say those things, and each of us ought to be saying those things. We need to tell a lost and condemned world that the Lord, His Word, His Son's sacrifice and victory are true and can be believed. Period. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks Your Word is true and can be believed. I rejoice that Holy Scripture contains no false advertising. Now may I point the unbelieving world toward the Savior who alone is God's fulfilled promise, who offers salvation. In Jesus' Name. Lenten Series
Lent begins in nine 9 days! I know! I didn't realize it until last Friday myself. Anyways, you may be wondering what we are gong to focus on during our Wednesday Lenten services. We are going to focus on:

Remember, supper begins at 5:30 and worship begins at 6:30!!!

DEVOTION: God said, "Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests; anyone else who approaches the sanctuary must be put to death." Numbers 3:4 If you do that again you are going to get a spanking. Don't go running into the parking lot or you are going to get in big trouble. If I see a grade like that again on your report card you are grounded for two months. These all sound pretty harsh, don't they? Yet sometimes, in order to get the point across, we need to make pretty serious threats. And sometimes, when push comes to shove, we need to follow through on our threats or they become just empty, idle threats. Just so you know, God doesn't make empty, idle threats. There were a couple instances where men who were not priests approached the sanctuary, just like Gods told them not to do, and they were put to death. One time the Ark of the Covenant, which was supposed to stay in the holy of holies, was stolen by a rival country, but when the country experienced death and plague because of it, they sent it back on a wagon with a couple oxen carrying it. Our Lord is serious about his promises both good and bad. He doesn't just overlook offenses to His will. he allows consequences for sin, especially death. In the same way He is serious about keeping His promise of salvation. He is so serious, in fact, that He actually sent His only Son to earth, from heaven, to suffer and die for us. He keeps His promise. He is just as serious about you. If you were the only one on earth He would have done the same thing just for you. Think about that the next time you are thinking about doing something God doesn't want you to do. Think about that the next time you want to sleep in instead of getting up for worship. Think about that the next time you are putting God on the backburner. God is serious about you, isn't it time to maybe get a little more serious about Him? Let us pray: Lord God, I thank you for taking me seriously and loving me enough to die for me. Help me to take you seriously as well. Help me to do your will in all aspects of my life and to praise You in all I say and do. We will be making a stop at the Abraham Lincoln National Historic Site in Kentucky on the way. Along with the creation museum on Saturday, we will also enjoy a comedy on the Showboat majestic in the evening. On Sunday we will tour the national museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. As usual, cost will depend on the number of people going. As of now it should run about $350 per person, plus meals, or $506 a couple. If you are interested in this trip, please sign the sheet on the counter in the narthex. Road conditions
I'm not going to lie. The roads are pretty messy this morning. Everything is snow and ice covered. We are going to have worship this morning. But I would advise waiting and coming to the 11am service. I will be out spreading salt around the most walked on areas so callme on my cell phone 359-1061 if you need me.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and protection for Danny Dreyer
A prayer of thanksgiving that Dan Dreyer graduated from infantry school at Ft Benning , Ga. And a prayer to watch over him as he enters ranger school on Sunday. Barb, Grandma Brendel and I got to see his impressive graduation ceremony on Thursday . Dan was in the top 20 percent of the 143 graduates and received the commandant's award.

What do you think the water tasted like? That is the first question I had when I read this passage. It had to taste pretty nasty. But didn't the Israelites deserve it? Actually they deserved much more. The Lord had just gotten them out of Egypt, and He was giving them His ten commandments when they decided, already that the Almighty God just wasn't enough. They decided what god they would worship and left the real and true God out of it.
If I were God, or even Moses, I'd be pretty mad too, but if I were God I would have gone a lot further. I would have probably annihilated every one of them. I would not have had the mercy that God had. I would not have given them grace like God did.
Over and over again God compares the idolatry of the Israelites to adultery. It is as if every time they turn to other gods they are cheating on God. And really they are.
Did you ever think of yourself that way? Every time you turn to something else or someone else other than the true and Almighty God you are indeed "cheating" on God. When God says that He is a "jealous" God He isn't lying. He really can't stand it when you turn aside to the right or the left instead of simply following, listening to, believing, and trusting in Him.
Yet, because God is ALL MERCIFUL. He keeps from destroying you as your unfaithfulness deserves. Instead He gives you more grace. He fills you with His Spirit. He forgives your sins and brings you to eternal life.
What is your response to His love? Forgiving others! That's it. Pass it on! Give the love and forgiveness of Christ to all who need it! Tell others that they are forgiven, especially if they have sinned against you, but even if they haven't sinned directly against you, they still need to know they are forgiven. Do it!
Prayer: Lord God, I don't deserve your mercy. I deserve eternal punishment. Yet you forgive me by your eternal mercy and grace. Thank you! Amen.

SUNDAY SCHOOL HAS STARTED A NEW EXCITING AND FUN CURRICULUM CALLED "CROSS EXPLORATIONS".
If your kids have been neglecting Sunday school for a while consider coming back as it has changed quite a bit!! It is in more of a VBS format with science experiments, hands on activities and lots of fun!!! This coming week they are going to be learning about blubber gloves!! There are also several servant events being planned for the near future! The kids who are there are seriously missing their friends!!! We'll see you Sunday!

A NEW ADULT BIBLE CLASS IS STARTING THIS SUNDAY AT 9:45!!!
A video based Bible study by Ken Ham, founder of Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum, will begin this coming Sunday. It begins with a study on the "Relevance of Genesis". Each study is about a half hour of video followed by a half hour of discussion. If you have been neglecting Bible study for a while, because of the subject matter, or for whatever reason, please consider coming back and joining us! You won't be disappointed!

BABY BOTTLES FOR ADOPTION
Did you know that it can often take $20,000 or more to adopt a child. That makes it very hard for most people.
Yet you can help those who are trying to adopt! Baby bottle banks were handed out yesterday to do just that. For the next two weeks we will be filling up those bottles with all the change we can find and even putting in paper money too. On February 10 we will collect all of those bottles at church and then forward the money to our Lutherans for Life Chapter so the money can be used to help those wishing to adopt children.
If you would like a bottle but didn't get one yesterday, you can stop by church any day this week between 8 and 4:30. If you don't have time this week, you can still collect the money and get a bottle to put it in this coming weekend!
A big thanks to Denise Schlesselmann for volunteering collect these monies and take it all to LFL in St. Charles!

Update on Josiah Tuley ( a young boy with brain cancer)--- and a beautiful testimony of God's love and grace from his mom

Almost four months ago our youngest son, Josiah, had a fourteen hour brain surgery to remove a large tumor from the center of his brain. The tumor was wrapped around a major artery in his brain. As a result the neurosurgeon was only able to remove approximately 97% of the tumor. Today we had our first follow-up MRI to check how his brain is healing from the surgery and to see if the tumor is growing back.
The MRI results were not exactly what we were hoping for. The tumor is growing. The neurosurgeon compared the results of today's MRI with the MRI taken immediately after surgery. Looking at the MRI it appears that the 3% of the original tumor has doubled in size. I would estimate his tumor to be about the size of a dime. As a result Josiah will begin chemotherapy in the near future. We do not have many details at this time, but will know more once we meet with the oncologist sometime in the next few days.
As I look back over these last four months, I have no doubt that God has been with us. Amy and I have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and prayers from family, friends, and even people we have never met praying on behalf of Josiah and our family. It still blows me away that thousands of people around the world have been praying on our behalf.
I have spent countless hours over the last few months trying to understand why. Why does my son, my perfect, innocent little boy have to suffer and go through this? I have often asked why can't I take his place. Why did God allow this to happen? I have prayed and sought God's wisdom and perspective with all I have. While I may never fully understand why, I may never completely see the big picture, or how God is using Josiah to glorify Him; I have never doubted God. As I was driving home tonight a song came on the radio that really hit home: One Thing Remains by Kristian Stanfill.

Despite all that we have been through, despite all the questions left unanswered, despite all the trials that lie before us, one thing remains...God's love. And as tears streamed down my face tonight as I attempted to praise God while I drove home, I have never been more sure in my life that God's love never fails, it never gives up, it never runs out on me. Tonight, just as it has so many other times during these last four months and throughout my life, God's love overwhelms and satisfies my soul. As I look at the long road ahead for Josiah and our family, I know that I never have to be afraid and that nothing can separate my heart from God's great love.
My question for you is, do you know God's love? Have you experienced his overwhelming and satisfying love? Do you have any fears or doubts? As I mentioned earlier, I may never completely understand why, but it has given me a greater understanding of God's great love for us, for you and me. As a father the hardest thing I have ever had to experience is to watch my son suffer, and to not be able to do anything about it. I am completely helpless in curing Josiah, and as a father I hate that I can't fix this for him. God has a son too. Knowing that we could do nothing to save ourselves from our sin, God offered his perfect son, Jesus, on our behalf. God watched his son suffer and die on a cross so that we could spend eternity with him. There is no greater love; of that I am sure.

Just to let you know… Prayer of Thanksgiving as my brother (ART Kelm) is home recuperating after the Drs were able to take care of the problems he was having. Thanks for your prayers.
