DEVOTION:
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

In 1963, David Bradley, representing his classmates, the first graduating class of Cranston High School in Rhode Island, wrote a prayer. The prayer became a banner. It reads thusly:

"Our Heavenly Father. Grant us each day the desire to do our best. To grow mentally and morally as well as physically. To be kind and helpful to our classmates and teachers. To be honest with ourselves as well as with others. Help us to be good sports and smile when we lose as well as when we win. Teach us the value of true friendship. Help us always to conduct ourselves so as to bring credit to Cranston High School West. Amen."

For 50 years that prayer banner had been hung on display, but not any longer.

Jessica Ahlquist, a senior at that high school has won her battle against the institution having religious displays. As a result, the banner is to be removed. For her efforts, Ahlquist is receiving the Humanist Pioneer Award. She is joined in that "honor" by Damon Fowler, who successfully protested the graduation prayer at his school: Bastrop High School in Texas.

Sadly, these young people are only doing what they have been taught is right. They have been trained in the way an irreligious society thinks they should go, and they are not departing from that path. In their minds they have been good citizens.

Thinking about this sad state of affairs, I found myself asking, I wonder what the founding fathers would say about what these young folks have done? Would they not say, "freedom of religion" is not the same thing as "freedom from religion"?

Then, as long as I was wondering, I wished they could visit with William Murray. He is the son of atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair. It was in his name that his mother fought and won the case which effectively banished prayer from America's state schools.

Today, Murray regrets that battle. He regrets the souls which have been lost because of that case.

You see, somewhere between then and now, the Holy Spirit put faith into the heart of William Murray. Indeed, today he acknowledges his faith in the Savior and has dedicated himself to the organization which he has founded: the Religious Freedom Coalition.

We can only pray the same conversion will come to Ahlquist, Fowler, and the millions of other young people whose minds are being filled with facts, but whose hearts are a barren wilderness, devoid of faith and a life of thanksgiving to their Savior.

Today we pray -- while there is still time for them and our country -- that these young folks may come to the realization that Jesus Christ is their Savior and with faith in Him there is assurance of an eternity in heaven as well as a better life here on earth.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, forgive those who, not knowing what they are doing, are teaching the next generations that they can find peace and hope in themselves. Let them learn that without a Redeemer life has little purpose and no hope for eternity. In Jesus' Name I ask it. Amen. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

DEVOTION:
Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: Then the proud waters had gone over our soul. Psalm 124:4-5

On May 21st a man went over Niagara Falls and lived.

Police reports say there have been three kinds of people who have gone over the falls without protection and lived. Let's see, in 2009 there was a 30-year-old fellow from Ontario who failed at committing suicide. Then, in 2003, an American went over the edge as part of a stunt. Finally, there was a seven-year-old boy whose boat had capsized.

Did I say there were three types of survivors? That's wrong.

There's only one kind of survivor. All of these survivors are people whose time on this earth is not yet over. You might call it incredible luck.

I'd say it was God's intervening hand.

I mean, think about it. What are the odds on surviving a fall over the falls? Pretty small, I'm guessing.

Of course, the odds on going over the falls and living are infinitely better than expecting to get into heaven without Jesus as your Savior.

We've already seen that some people, for whatever reason, manage to make it over and through a drop over Niagara. But there is nobody who is going to get into heaven without the Savior's blood-bought forgiveness.

Nobody. Period. End of reading.

This leads me to two questions:

1. Why would anyone in the Christian church not throw a rope to someone who was spiritually adrift, being swept along to certain disaster? It ought to be as unthinkable as withholding a life rope from a person who is about to be swept over Niagara's precipice.

2. And the second question? Why would anyone not take hold of and desperately cling to the Savior?

I can only think of one answer to that question: the person doesn't think he is in any kind of danger. He doesn't understand the imperative of holding fast to the Christ.

Well, I guess I don't have to understand why people don't want the Savior. I don't need to understand. Understanding is not my job. My job is to keep calling out a warning ... and tossing out the lifeline provided by the Savior. Who knows? Maybe someday they'll grab hold.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I bring before you those who are close to me, those who are headed for certain destruction without the Savior. In my heart I list them by name and pray You will -- while there is still time -- help me keep the Savior before them. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace, which He lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of His will, according to His purpose, which He set forth in Christ. Ephesians 1:7-9

The title of the Reuters article was "IRS Widens Taxpayer Debt Forgiveness Program."

It was the kind of article that stopped me cold in my tracks. I began reading this story with enthusiasm. I finished reading the article with that enthusiasm somewhat blunted.

Now make no mistake about it, the program will help a lot of people who have been hammered by a tough economy. That being said, I have to go on record as saying the Savior and the IRS have two different definitions of forgiveness.

* For example, you have to apply to enter the IRS program, while Jesus extends His blood-bought forgiveness to everyone.

* In the IRS program only a percentage of your debt is forgiven. In contrast, Jesus forgives all our debts ... even as we forgive our debtors.

* In the IRS program you have to make a commitment you will pay your taxes for the next five years. Jesus has no such riders. His forgiveness is complete, and it is lifelong.

* The IRS is going to wave its magic wands (or something like that) and the money owed is just going to go away. Jesus did not take that easy route. Instead, He paid the price for our sins. On the cross He paid the price for every, single one.

As I look at the two programs, I am grateful for the one, but I stand in awe of the second.

The idea that the Son of God will humble Himself and sacrifice His life to pay off the debts that my disobedience has earned is beyond comprehension or imagination.

It is a debt I can never repay. Thank the Lord. Because of the completeness of Jesus' work, I don't have to.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, You have forgiven me; by Your life, death and resurrection, You have forgiven me. Now, because of You, I am completely forgiven of my wrongdoings and adopted into the family of faith. May I live as one of Your family. In Your Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:
Jesus said) "But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:23-24

Dublin, Ireland, has a patron saint: St. Laurence O'Toole.

Laurence lived in the twelfth century, but most of his relics disappeared during the Reformation. Thankfully, those who venerate relics believe the important part of him -- his heart -- was preserved and has been sitting in St. Lauds Chapel for many, many years.

Notice I said has been and not is sitting.

That's because somebody has stolen the heart of Laurence O'Toole. It is not the first such crime in Ireland. Saint Brigid's Church in Killester has had some of its relics ripped off, and in another location thieves used hammers and angle grinders to help steal a "piece" the true cross.

In the case of the St. Laurence robbery, those thieves passed by gold candlesticks and silver objects of church ware. They didn't want things of financial value; their focus was centered on getting that shriveled-up, old heart.

My question is why?

Are the criminals some college pledges who were given a challenge? Are they some people of faith who want to possess these relics at the exclusion of others; is it some crackpot fanatic from another religion who wishes to destroy these antiquities and injure the faith of those who believe in them?

While I don't have the answer to those questions, I do know this: our God is in the heavens, and He wants those who worship Him to do so in spirit and truth.

As Jesus told the Samaritan woman, the Lord is not found exclusively in Jerusalem or on Mount Gerizim in Samaria. He is not only in the heart of Laurence O'Toole, and He can't be confined or contained by a doubtful piece of the true cross.

It is in our hearts where Spirit-given faith in the crucified and risen Savior comes closest to us. It is in our tongues that our witness becomes personal in its presentation.

That is the kind of faith God wants us to have and the kind of proclamation He encourages us to make.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, like Elijah, humankind often looks for You in strange places. Grant us the realization that You can best be seen in the Holy Word that directs our eyes to Your Bethlehem manger, Calvary's cross, and Your borrowed and empty tomb. Let us see Your great grace and reflect it to others. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:  They gave me poison for food and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. Psalms 69:21

The Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, seems like a nice enough fellow.

No, I've never met him, but the few times I've seen him speak on television, he seems to say a lot of nice things. No, he doesn't talk much about Jesus being the Savior, but Mr. Lama still struggles for peace and religious freedom for his followers.

As I said, he's a nice enough guy.

This is why I was surprised to hear him bring a complaint against the Chinese. It appears his aides picked up word that Chinese agents are training Tibetan women to poison him.

According to the information received, the ladies were supposed to have poison on their hair and poison on their shawls. Then, pretending to be his devoted followers, these women were supposed to come up to him and ask for his blessing.

Then, when Mr. Lama placed his hand on their heads or shoulders he would receive enough poison to kill him.

I was disturbed when I read this story and the hatred this reasonably nice guy seems to have engendered.

Maybe that's because, in some ways, it reminds me of the Savior's story. No, I'm not implying the Dalai Lama and Jesus are the same. Even on his best days Mr. Lama would not be worthy of untying Jesus' sandals.

No, the Dalai Lama story reminded me how much Jesus was hated.

The Gospels tell how He was hated by Herod, His hometown, His religion, His government and even some of the crowds of Jerusalem. All of them, in one way or another, plotted His murder. All of them wanted to see taken out of commission the one Person who was committed to getting their sins forgiven and their souls saved.

By God's wisdom, power and plan their hatred was used to accomplish God's goal of rescuing and redeeming us.

Then, three days after Jesus was buried, the plans of these murderers, was pushed to the side, as was the stone which had been placed before Jesus' tomb.

When the Savior emerged from that borrowed and now-empty tomb, He showed to all the world that the devil and death had been defeated.

Even more, sin's stranglehold on our lives had been broken. The poison of sin that had placed Jesus on the cross had been neutralized by the grace of God and the shed blood of the Savior.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, Scripture says all things work together for good to those who love You. We give thanks the same can be said for those who are loved by You. Keep us ever mindful of Your power and love that has been shown to us in the conquering Christ. In His Name I pray it. Amen

DEVOTION:  Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. Romans 12:17

Revenge is sweet.

How sweet? To find an answer to that question, I would encourage you to speak to Anna, a dentist in Poland. Last month, Marek, her ex-boyfriend -- the fellow who had just dumped her -- asked Anna to help him treat a toothache.

Anna decided to take the high road and treat the tooth like a professional. That was her intention.

But when Anna saw Marek in her chair, she gave him a massive dose of anesthetic and removed every tooth in his mouth. Then, having finished her work for the day, she wrapped his jaw in bandages and left her office.

As for Marek, when he awoke, he knew something wasn't quite right, but he had to get home and look in the mirror before he understood the immensity of his problem, and the intensity of his ex-girlfriend's thirst for revenge.

Yes, revenge is sweet, but it isn't necessarily God-pleasing. At least that's what Paul was trying to convey to the folks at Rome. Certainly, those Christians who were undergoing persecution for their faith had reason enough to want to give the Romans a dose of their own medicine.

"Revenge may be sweet," says Paul, "but don't you take it."

That was probably for a number of reasons. First, Paul knew a Christian with a vengeful heart was not going to be thanking the Savior for the work He had done to save us. Second, revenge-seeking Christians would not give a powerful witness to the world. Lastly, seeking revenge pretty much wipes out the words of Jesus who told us to love our enemies and do good to those who persecute us.

Now I don't know if you're one of those, "I-don't-get-mad, I-get-even" people. If you are, you might want to reevaluate and repent of your position.

Yes, revenge may be sweet but ultimately doing what the Lord has asked of us is sweeter still.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, You remained silent even though You had every reason to seek revenge on the many that railroaded You to the cross. Grant us a new heart that will forgive those who have earned our disrespect. In Your Name. Amen.

PS - And in case you're wondering how the story is turning out, Marek is planning to have dental implants; his new girlfriend dumped him and, Anna, the dentist, is being investigated for medical malpractice. (Personally, I think they're going to have a hard time finding a jury that will convict her for pulling the teeth of an ex who asks for free dental work.)
