Isaiah 43:1 Like most teen-aged girls, Megan Gillan was planning on going to her high school prom. Indeed, plans had been made for her to attend the event with a number of her friends. Tragically, Gillan was found dead at her parent's home on January 19th. Her passing was a terrible experience for her friends, classmates and school. It was almost two months later, March 16th to be exact, when Gillan's parents received a letter from her school. Since letters of sympathy were still coming in to the mourning parents, they thought nothing of this unusual epistle. They thought nothing of it until they read the letter. They were shocked to find the school had decreed Gillan would probably not be able to attend the prom. The letter shared that her attendance was 60.4 percent and the school requires 92 percent before a child can attend prom. Gillan's mother said she screamed when she first saw the letter. She shouted, "If they want her to attend that much, I'll take Megan's remains. It's disgusting!" The school says the letter was a software-generated mistake. I'm sure the school's explanation is probably true. Even so, it shouldn't have happened. Almost all of us have found ourselves at the receiving end of a computer-generated mistake. It can be a bank error, a mass-mailing error, a computer-card error, or even a government IRS error. In a world filled with sinful human beings making mistakes, such things happen. Thankfully, there are no such mistakes being made in heaven. I'm not worried that when I die the doors to heaven are going to be shut because some angel made a mistake and moved my name into the "REJECT" column. I'm not afraid I'm going to end up in the wrong place because they got me confused with "KENNETH KLAUS" from Walla Walla, Washington. Scripture is clear: we don't have to be afraid. The Lord who made us is keeping track of us. He knows where we are, who we are and, most importantly, He knows what we believe. Because of His Son's sacrificial death for sinners, believers on the living Christ are saved. They know where they're going when they die, and so does He. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, when You promised to send Your Son to save us, You thought about me. When Jesus carried the sins of the world, my transgressions were in that great pile. When Jesus said we can go to the Father only through Him, He extended an invitation to the world and to me as a person. For that invitation, in Jesus' Name I give thanks. Amen. |

VOTER'S MEETING ON SUNDAY, MAY 20, at 10:15!!
Two important items are on the agenda.
1. The building committee will present their newest ideas and findings, and the plan for the future.
2. First we will vote whether or not to keep the 11am service (In January it was only decided that it would be temporary until this May meeting whenw e would decide whether or not to make it permanent.) Then, if and when we decide to keep the 11am service, we will decide how to best change the service times so that we have enough time for fellowship and Sunday school between services.

HELP TO FEED HUNGRY KIDS IN WARREN COUNTY WITH OPERATION BACKPACK
In the preschool room there is a box that you can put food in to feed extremely low income children in Warren County. Many of these kids get fed every day at school for breakfast and lunch, but what about the weekend? What the food listed below does for many of these children is gets them through the weekend when food is especially scarce.

DEVOTION:
And great crowds came to Him (Jesus), bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at His feet, and He healed them, so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel. Matthew 15:30-31
Every now and then I come across the story of a person who impresses me. Today's devotion revolves around such an individual.
May I tell you about seven-year-old Annie Clark? She goes to Wilson Christian Academy. This year she won a penmanship contest ... and $1,000. The award is especially meaningful since Clark was born without hands. She writes by moving the pencil with her forearms.
Pretty impressive, don't you think?
Well, this story isn't about Annie Clark. Yes, she is special, but the real special folks who touched me are her parents: Tom and Mary Ellen.
The couple has nine children: three biological kids and six who were adopted from China, including Annie. She is one of the four adoptees who have special needs, which affect their hands and arms.
Mary Ellen said, "Each time, we weren't looking to adopt a special-needs child, but that is what happened. This was the family God wanted for us."
Tom said, Annie is "an amazing little girl. It's a shame because society places so many rules on how people should look, but the minds of these kids are phenomenal."
Truly, little Annie is special; but her parents are specialer.
Here is a couple whose love of the Lord is so big they find it a blessing to welcome into their family children who have been avoided and shunned by others. Then, having done what others might think is extraordinary, they show the Savior's love by teaching those children that God will do great and wonderful things for and with them.
These are the kind of people I wish I was. They are the kind of people who remind me that the Lord Jesus can do great things if we let Him work in us and through us.
I mean if the Lord can help Annie Clark win a penmanship contest, what can't He do with all of us?
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, You have always specialized in doing what we humans consider to be impossible. Today I ask that You grant me the grace to set my limitations to the side and be empowered to do something special. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Include in your prayers this week a prayer of thanksgiving for Dan Dreyer and Andrew Sherman as they graduate this weekend from MU. Also a prayer of encouragement and support to Dan Dreyer as he is commissioned into the United States Army and heading to Ft. Lewis, Washington in June and then Ft. Benning, GA in August.

DEVOTION:
But now we are released from the Law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. Romans 7:6
Most of you know that a week or two ago Charles Colson died.
If you read the papers from the late 1960s and the early 1970s, you knew Chuck Colson was an important guy. He smoked, drank, and sat at the table with powerful people like a U.S. president.
You would also know that Charles Colson was not necessarily a good guy. He was, with others, convicted and sentenced for his involvement with the Watergate scandal. That's what you would know if you read the papers from the 1970s.
If you read the papers from 2012, if you waded through the articles and obituaries which reported Colson's passing, you would meet a man who was involved with prison ministry, with defending the Christian faith, and pointing people to the Savior.
It is almost as if Charles Colson was two different people.
Maybe that's because he was two different people. There was Charles Colson the sinner, and Charles Colson the saved saint.
If you take a look at the Gospels, you will quickly see that when an individual meets Jesus, he must change. Now it is possible that a person, having seen the Savior, could become worse than he was originally. The Jewish Sanhedrin and the Pharisees could be numbered in that category.
Far more often Jesus changed people for the better.
When the Holy Spirit put a repentant heart and saving faith into an individual, that person would be altered in a most wonderful way. Tax collectors gave back what they had stolen; murderers were made into apostles, and suicidal jailers had joy restored in their homes.
Just as importantly, we need to remember Jesus has done the same wonderful thing for us.
When we entered this world, we were sinners. Granted, we were novice sinners, and at the beginning of our lives both size and coordination kept us from actively pursuing many sins, which would someday be commonplace.
Still, through His means of grace the Holy Spirit reclaimed us, recycled us, and made it possible for us to glorify the Savior with the things we did and said. He set us free from the Law and enabled us to live in a new way -- a way filled with light and hope, forgiveness and salvation.
That's what the Lord did for Charles Colson, and the thief on the cross, and the Samaritan woman at the well and ... you and me.
Meeting the Savior changes people. Thank God He has changed us.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the Psalmist prayed for a clean heart; the lepers asked for bodily healing, and a Samaritan woman needed a Savior to straighten out her life. For the changes You made in these people, I give thanks. Most of all I rejoice in the saving changes You have made in me. May I live as a transformed servant of the Savior. In Jesus' Name I ask it. Amen.

First we will vote whether or not to keep the 11am service (In January it was only decided that it would be temporary until this May meeting whenw e would decide whether or not to make it permanent.) Then, if and when we decide to keep the 11am service, we will decide how to best change the service times so that we have enough time for fellowship and Sunday school between services.

In the preschool room there is a box that you can put food in to feed extremely low income children in Warren County. Many of these kids get fed every day at school for breakfast and lunch, but what about the weekend? What the food listed below does for many of these children is gets them through the weekend when food is especially scarce.

DEVOTION:
By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. Romans 5:12
It was always hard explaining to confirmands that we commit sins of "omission" and "commission." All too often they thought sins of omission were sins we should have done, but didn't.
At long last I think I've stumbled on a story which explains the difference. It begins in Colorado Springs when, early on a Sunday morning Anthony Pettiford ran into the local 7-Eleven. Understand, going into the 7-Eleven was not Pettiford's sin of omission. Leaving his car unlocked, with his keys in the ignition, and his three-year-old son in the back seat was.
During the short time Pettiford was in the store, somebody did a deliberate sin of commission, when he stole Pettiford's vehicle, along with his child. The intentional sins kept coming when, four blocks later, the thief dumped the three-year-old at the side of the road. Generously, he also left the child's bag containing some soy milk, a sippy cup, two diapers, wipes and pajama bottoms.
The little boy carried the bag through the snow, up 14 stairs and knocked on Traci Gilbert's second-story apartment door. "Help me. I'm cold," the child said when Gilbert opened her door. Eventually, a policeman was flagged down, and the child ended up being reunited with his dad. Dad has not, as of this writing, been reunited with his 1995 white Chrysler New Yorker.
After reading that story the first thing I thought was are you kidding? Both these guys have done some things which are both dangerous and wrong. The second thing I thought was they're just like the rest of us.
Now we may not leave our child in the back-seat of our car, so he may be kidnapped; and most of us won't steal a car with a child in the back seat.
Even so, we all commit sins of omission and commission. Think a bit and you will find something which fits into both of those categories. And because that's so, as the Scripture verse for today says, "Death has passed upon all men."
Thankfully, there is a rest of the story.
The rest of the story tells how God, in spite of our sinful condition, sent His Son to take our place. We sin, but Jesus didn't. We transgress, but He refused. We get tempted, but He resisted. Jesus did the job so well, so completely, that when He gave up the ghost, He could say, "It is finished."
And the work of saving us was ... finished, that is.
Now to all who sin (which means all of us), the Holy Spirit extends an invitation of faith. It is an invitation that provides complete coverage of every sin and total forgiveness to every sinner who believes.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, forgive my sins and grant me the forgiveness that comes through Jesus. In His Name. Amen.

Have you ever heard of the "Miracle of the Holy Fire"?
The Miracle of the Holy Fire is an event which has been documented for over 1,000 years. For those of you who are unacquainted with the Holy Fire, let me explain: each year, on Holy Saturday at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, the Orthodox Patriarch removes his robe and enters the chapel where tradition says Jesus was buried.
A short time later he hands to those who are waiting outside a bundle of burning tapirs.
More candles are lit from his, and still more candles are lit from those. Soon, the whole, crowded church is ablaze with candled fire. The flame is considered so blessed that it is often kept burning as the pilgrims return to their home countries.
Now you're probably wondering what is the miracle? The miracle is this: many people believe the flame miraculously occurs without any human effort. Yes, I know -- you think the Orthodox Patriarch has hidden away some matches or a Zippo lighter.
I don't know about that. I do know the Israeli authorities search the Patriarch to make sure there are no such shenanigans.
Now I am not qualified to investigate, nor have I been asked to give an opinion on the veracity of the Holy Fire. In truth, when it comes to being given a saving faith, the Holy Fire isn't important. You don't have to have an opinion about it.
On the other hand, every person needs to have a position on the miracle of the Savior's resurrection. Faith in the once-crucified but ever-living Lord is of incredible, even eternal, importance. That's what St. Paul was trying to convey to the church in Corinth when he wrote: "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished" (1 Corinthians 15:17-18).
Paul knew that if Jesus remained dead, all hope in His being the Savior was also dead.
On the other hand, if Jesus' resurrection miracle is a reality (and it is), then everything else Jesus claims, all the promises He made, can also be believed.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant that I may continue to believe in the resurrection of the Redeemer. No matter what the world may say, may I always acknowledge Christ crucified and risen. In the Name of my living Lord I pray it. Amen.

DEVOTION:
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
So, what do you think? Are you ready for another Bible?
Ready or not, Thomas Nelson Publishing is going to give us one.
In truth this Bible is new; it is different, and it is special, which is not to say it is better. Indeed, this new Bible doesn't claim to be more accurate, it just says it is easier to understand. That's because rather than translating a Greek word with an English word, the new Bible tries to capture the nuances of the language.
Rather than saying, "Jesus Christ," this new Bible says, "Jesus, the Anointed One." Forget calling Jesus' post-Pentecost disciples, "apostles"; this new Bible renames them "emissaries."
Yes, the world is getting a new Bible, but the ultimate question is will it be a good Bible? That's the question that needs to be asked of every translation of Scripture. Is it good? Is it accurate? Is it spot-on reliable?
Not all translations are spot-on reliable.
That's because every translator sees the Bible in a different way. He uses his filters, his perspectives, and his points of view when he tries to take the original languages of Scripture and convert them into a language you can read. A good translation of the Bible usually happens when we see a great deal of God -- and very little of the translator.
So, who do we see in this new Bible: God or the translator?
Let's take a look: the first verse of John's Gospel, says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (English Standard Version). The same verse in the new Bible says, "Before time itself was measured, the Voice was speaking. The Voice was and is God."
Wow!
I can't speak for you, but I see a lot of translator and not a lot of God. Now I would not condemn this new translation. The Holy Spirit has managed to accomplish His purpose by using good translations and bad translations. He can do the same here.
That being said, I would urge you to use a translation where the Lord shines clearly and without a translator's filter.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, You have spoken to us through prophets and apostles. May we be given a Scripture that shares those words, which points to our Savior in a simple, understandable and accurate way. This I ask in the Savior's Name. Amen.

Ready or not, Thomas Nelson Publishing is going to give us one.
In truth this Bible is new; it is different, and it is special, which is not to say it is better. Indeed, this new Bible doesn't claim to be more accurate, it just says it is easier to understand. That's because rather than translating a Greek word with an English word, the new Bible tries to capture the nuances of the language.
Rather than saying, "Jesus Christ," this new Bible says, "Jesus, the Anointed One." Forget calling Jesus' post-Pentecost disciples, "apostles"; this new Bible renames them "emissaries."
Yes, the world is getting a new Bible, but the ultimate question is will it be a good Bible? That's the question that needs to be asked of every translation of Scripture. Is it good? Is it accurate? Is it spot-on reliable?
Not all translations are spot-on reliable.
That's because every translator sees the Bible in a different way. He uses his filters, his perspectives, and his points of view when he tries to take the original languages of Scripture and convert them into a language you can read. HELP TO FEED HUNGRY KIDS IN WARREN COUNTY WITH OPERATION BACKPACK
In the preschool room there is a box that you can put food in to feed extremely low income children in Warren County. Many of these kids get fed every day at school for breakfast and lunch, but what about the weekend? What the food listed below does for many of these children is gets them through the weekend when food is especially scarce.
