DEVOTION:
By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. Romans 5:12

It was always hard explaining to confirmands that we commit sins of "omission" and "commission." All too often they thought sins of omission were sins we should have done, but didn't.

At long last I think I've stumbled on a story which explains the difference. It begins in Colorado Springs when, early on a Sunday morning Anthony Pettiford ran into the local 7-Eleven. Understand, going into the 7-Eleven was not Pettiford's sin of omission. Leaving his car unlocked, with his keys in the ignition, and his three-year-old son in the back seat was.

During the short time Pettiford was in the store, somebody did a deliberate sin of commission, when he stole Pettiford's vehicle, along with his child. The intentional sins kept coming when, four blocks later, the thief dumped the three-year-old at the side of the road. Generously, he also left the child's bag containing some soy milk, a sippy cup, two diapers, wipes and pajama bottoms.

The little boy carried the bag through the snow, up 14 stairs and knocked on Traci Gilbert's second-story apartment door. "Help me. I'm cold," the child said when Gilbert opened her door. Eventually, a policeman was flagged down, and the child ended up being reunited with his dad. Dad has not, as of this writing, been reunited with his 1995 white Chrysler New Yorker.

After reading that story the first thing I thought was are you kidding? Both these guys have done some things which are both dangerous and wrong. The second thing I thought was they're just like the rest of us.

Now we may not leave our child in the back-seat of our car, so he may be kidnapped; and most of us won't steal a car with a child in the back seat.

Even so, we all commit sins of omission and commission. Think a bit and you will find something which fits into both of those categories. And because that's so, as the Scripture verse for today says, "Death has passed upon all men."

Thankfully, there is a rest of the story.

The rest of the story tells how God, in spite of our sinful condition, sent His Son to take our place. We sin, but Jesus didn't. We transgress, but He refused. We get tempted, but He resisted. Jesus did the job so well, so completely, that when He gave up the ghost, He could say, "It is finished."

And the work of saving us was ... finished, that is.

Now to all who sin (which means all of us), the Holy Spirit extends an invitation of faith. It is an invitation that provides complete coverage of every sin and total forgiveness to every sinner who believes.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, forgive my sins and grant me the forgiveness that comes through Jesus. In His Name. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:    According to Psalm 103, who is supposed to praise the Lord?  "Praise the Lord, O My Soul!"  "Praise the Lord, you His angels".... "All His heavenly hosts",  and "all His works".  (Good job Dianne!)

CATECHISM
Question: Do people still have the image of God?
Answer:  No, the image was lost when our first parents disobeyed God and fell into sin.  Their will and intellect lost the ability to know and please God.  In Christians God has begun to rebuild His image, but only in heaven will it be fully restored.

DEVOTION:
And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:14

Have you ever heard of the "Miracle of the Holy Fire"?

The Miracle of the Holy Fire is an event which has been documented for over 1,000 years. For those of you who are unacquainted with the Holy Fire, let me explain: each year, on Holy Saturday at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, the Orthodox Patriarch removes his robe and enters the chapel where tradition says Jesus was buried.

A short time later he hands to those who are waiting outside a bundle of burning tapirs.

More candles are lit from his, and still more candles are lit from those. Soon, the whole, crowded church is ablaze with candled fire. The flame is considered so blessed that it is often kept burning as the pilgrims return to their home countries.

Now you're probably wondering what is the miracle? The miracle is this: many people believe the flame miraculously occurs without any human effort. Yes, I know -- you think the Orthodox Patriarch has hidden away some matches or a Zippo lighter.

I don't know about that. I do know the Israeli authorities search the Patriarch to make sure there are no such shenanigans.

Now I am not qualified to investigate, nor have I been asked to give an opinion on the veracity of the Holy Fire. In truth, when it comes to being given a saving faith, the Holy Fire isn't important. You don't have to have an opinion about it.

On the other hand, every person needs to have a position on the miracle of the Savior's resurrection. Faith in the once-crucified but ever-living Lord is of incredible, even eternal, importance. That's what St. Paul was trying to convey to the church in Corinth when he wrote: "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished" (1 Corinthians 15:17-18).

Paul knew that if Jesus remained dead, all hope in His being the Savior was also dead.

On the other hand, if Jesus' resurrection miracle is a reality (and it is), then everything else Jesus claims, all the promises He made, can also be believed.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant that I may continue to believe in the resurrection of the Redeemer. No matter what the world may say, may I always acknowledge Christ crucified and risen. In the Name of my living Lord I pray it. Amen.

DEVOTION:
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

So, what do you think? Are you ready for another Bible?

Ready or not, Thomas Nelson Publishing is going to give us one.

In truth this Bible is new; it is different, and it is special, which is not to say it is better. Indeed, this new Bible doesn't claim to be more accurate, it just says it is easier to understand. That's because rather than translating a Greek word with an English word, the new Bible tries to capture the nuances of the language.

Rather than saying, "Jesus Christ," this new Bible says, "Jesus, the Anointed One." Forget calling Jesus' post-Pentecost disciples, "apostles"; this new Bible renames them "emissaries."

Yes, the world is getting a new Bible, but the ultimate question is will it be a good Bible? That's the question that needs to be asked of every translation of Scripture. Is it good? Is it accurate? Is it spot-on reliable?

Not all translations are spot-on reliable.

That's because every translator sees the Bible in a different way. He uses his filters, his perspectives, and his points of view when he tries to take the original languages of Scripture and convert them into a language you can read. A good translation of the Bible usually happens when we see a great deal of God -- and very little of the translator.

So, who do we see in this new Bible: God or the translator?

Let's take a look: the first verse of John's Gospel, says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (English Standard Version). The same verse in the new Bible says, "Before time itself was measured, the Voice was speaking. The Voice was and is God."

Wow!

I can't speak for you, but I see a lot of translator and not a lot of God. Now I would not condemn this new translation. The Holy Spirit has managed to accomplish His purpose by using good translations and bad translations. He can do the same here.

That being said, I would urge you to use a translation where the Lord shines clearly and without a translator's filter.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, You have spoken to us through prophets and apostles. May we be given a Scripture that shares those words, which points to our Savior in a simple, understandable and accurate way. This I ask in the Savior's Name. Amen.

I'm sorry that it has been so long since I last posted. Let's see.... I need to pick up where we left off just before Easter. Since Jonas did not make counts that Friday, he was free and feeling well enough to make his first long-distance journey since our long drive back from Houston. We drove to St. Louis to see my family. We had a wonderful Easter Egg hunt at Grandpa's new home in Warrenton with Aunt Stephanie, Aunt Lizzie and Uncle Scott and Jonas's cousins, Savannah and Will. The weather was beautiful and perfect to be outdoors. We then went to Florissant and had a nice Easter dinner with Grandma before turning around to come back to Kansas City.
Jonas has told me many times that the most favorite memories of his whole life are Easter Egg Hunts and Fourth of July with his grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. Everyone laughing and coming and going. Good food. Horseshoe pits and checkers boards, four-wheelers and trampolines. Walking down to the creek or pond to look for frogs and other treasures. And knowing that through good or bad times, family is forever. Annual traditions like this are comforting to most of us and give us a sense of belonging. It's no wonder that when Jonas was in pain, he chose to conjure up these memories to get him through the worst of it all.
Speaking of family, I got the sweetest letter in the mail from my Aunt JoAn in California last week. Thank you so much Aunt Jo! And for the donation from your prayer group. I am so grateful to all my aunts and uncles who have been so kind to reach out to us during this difficult time. Recently, I have just reconnected with lots of my cousins on FaceBook. Sherrie, Susan, Gwen, Gem, Michele, Chris Petty, Dallas, and Leslie. It is so nice to be friends across the miles. xoxox. Thank you for all your love and encouragement.
Last week, Jonas had the opportunity to go to his first baseball practice! He was feeling especially strong and fiesty and threw the ball around a bit, participating in most of the hour-long practice. The team has chosen the name The Fighters and I will post their first picture here. Jonas is so happy to be back on Coach Shawn James' team with so many of his good friends. I will keep you posted when game season comes around if and when he gets to play. He would love to have a supportive crowd there to cheer him on.
Jonas has always had posters of world maps and fighter planes up in his room. And then recently he added the big banner from the Taskforce NightHawk soldiers from Afghanistan. At the Melanie Grace soccer fundraiser, Beth Manley surprised him with another beauty - A great big, autographed and framed, photo of the Airforce Thunderbirds!! Thank you, Beth! It is absolutely stunning. He has been researching the Thunderbirds this past week and is trying to figure out how he can get to see an airshow! lol. (You can see the picture in the photo gallery here.)
And to further decorate his room, our good friend Christine Laird and Don Maxey, looked high and low and found an authentic aircraft propeller for Jonas to mount in his room!! It is way cool. It is approximately 6 feel long and if we do this just right, it should freely revolve once mounted to the wall. Thank you so much. (I will post a picture of it soon.)

Since Easter, Jonas has had another two day hospital stay and another outpatient injection of chemo. He made it past this milestone, leaving only two more rounds of chemotherapy left to go!!! WooHoo! I will tell you more about that tomorrow. TTFN

update on Libby Pailer

Hi Friends! Tuesday was a great day. We started out by going to see Lib's surgeon. He took a lot of time to bring her up to date as what she can expect. He was highly pleased with her progress. He told her she can  pretty much  do what she wants except heavy lifting. We visited some friends in St. Charles and then to Red Lobster where we celebrated a belated 61 st annaversary. Lib even had a manhattan. Yesterday we raked and cleaned the gazebo. I let her do as much as she feels like. I watch closely so she don't over do. My Libby is some kinda gal. She has come so far in such a short time. I am sure your prayers are the source of her strength. Friday we see the cardiologist. Will kep ou advised as to what he says. Love Lib and Larry P

GREETINGS ALL YOU St. John's C.H.U.R.C.H. Ministry go-getters!!!!!!!!!!

On Thursday, May 3, 2012 we are hosting a National Day of Prayer observance like we did last year.  We are serving a continental breakfast in the church overflow area from 6:30 AM - 7:00 AM.

At 7:00 AM Pastor Klaustermeier will begin a prayer and devotion time in our sanctuary with music by Gene Hilgendorf.

You all have another opportunity to help out by donating the items for the breakfast.  We did have a pretty good turnout last year; but we never really know how many to expect.  I believe the following list should be plenty to serve the folks who come that morning.  Hopefully, some of our Little Lambs and their parents will be able to attend before school begins at 8:15 AM.

Please sign your name by the items listed below

(and note amount you will bring)

Please have your donated items to church

ON Wed. May 2, 2012 for maximum freshness

(Refrigerated items can be put in the refrigerators in the church kitchen - the others on the island in the church kitchen)
