DEVOTION:
(Jesus said) "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life." John 5:24

A famous quote of questioned origins is this: "Nothing in life is certain other than death and taxes."

Maybe, but we will say more about that later.

The truth is many people seem to play the lottery, as if winning the jackpot were a sure thing. Now I'll admit there is some logic to the fact that somebody must eventually win that mega-million-dollar jackpot, and since somebody is going to win, everybody figures it might as well be them.

You know the logic: the odds in winning are 50-50. Either you win or you don't.

Now without speaking about the poor use of financial gifts the Lord has entrusted to us, let's look at the facts. To do so, I'd like you to consider the story of Bill Isles of Wichita. Not so long ago Isles bought three tickets for the Mega Millions lottery.

Naturally he did so hoping to be one of the winners in the record-breaking jackpot.

Hours after he bought those tickets, Isles, a storm spotter for the National Weather Service was struck by lightning. Now, he is pretty much okay. He wasn't burned and his heart, along with his memory, have done a bit of jumping around, but he'll be all right.

The point of Isles' story is this:

o the odds of him being hit by lightning are 1 in 835,000;

o the odds of him winning the Mega Millions jackpot were 1 in 175 million.

This leads me to conclude, if you don't think you're going to get struck by lightning, you really, really ought not to think you're going to win that lottery.

Or, as a pastor speaking from a completely practical point of view, your money can better be used in support of your Lord, your family and your church.

Indeed, I encourage you to use your cash for those purposes because, along with being sure about death and taxes, you can be sure of their love, too.

And if you're not sure of your family's love, you can be absolutely positive about the love of the Savior -- the Savior who gave His life so you might be forgiven and saved.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks for a Savior whose sure love has guaranteed me a place in heaven. Grant that everything I do may show my appreciation of His sacrifice. In His Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:
Jesus said) "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." Matthew 5:43-44

Patrick Greene is an atheist.

Patrick Greene is the kind of atheist who believes in taking a stand when something rankles him. The fact that Henderson County, Texas, a place five hours north of his San Antonio home, put a nativity set on a courthouse square rankled Patrick Greene a lot.

Believing a religious Christmas symbol didn't belong on government property, Greene went to Henderson County, promised to lead a rally, and file a lawsuit if things didn't change.

Well, things changed.

Mr. Greene backed out of his threats when he found he had a detached retina and was going blind. He had to quit his job as a taxi driver and had to figure out how to make ends meet. Making ends meet was especially troublesome since he had no health insurance, and his disability hadn't come through.

The news about Mr. Greene made Jessica Crye, a member of San Springs Baptist Church, give thanks to the Lord. No, she wasn't thanking God the threatened lawsuit had been dropped. She was thanking God the Christian community had been given a chance to show the kind of stuff the Savior's people do.

She, with her church, organized a fundraiser. Hundreds of dollars were sent to Patrick Greene. It was enough to put food on his table 'til assistance arrives. Other Christians offered to pay for his surgery, a gift Greene declined since the success of the surgery was not a guaranteed proposition.

As Pastor Erick Graham said, "We don't discriminate on who we help, whether they are Christians or non-Christians, church members or not, we just help those with a need."

I think those gifts and donations must have made the Savior smile. Somebody understood what He meant when He said we should "love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us." Indeed, Jesus did more than say those words: He lived those words.

He was born into a world that didn't want Him; He was misunderstood and hated by those whom He had come to save. He was deserted by His church, let down by His government, betrayed by a disciple, and deserted by His friends. Yet, never was there a time when Jesus didn't love His enemies or pray for those who persecuted Him.

This is why we, who are the beneficiaries of His life, love and sacrifice, should do the best we can to reflect His Spirit to others. It can make a difference.

How do I know? Mr. Greene is moving to Henderson County where it's cheaper to live, where he can walk to a Wal-Mart, and where he can be near some Christians. (That last part is my thought, not his.)

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, help us to reflect Your love to others, so they might see the greatness of Your grace. This I ask in Your Name. Amen.

Turning Point is the Mission for month of April

I keep forgetting to change the mission of the month in the daily email.  This month's mission spolight is TURNING POINT.  Turning Point is the emergency women's (and their children's) shelter in Warren County.  If women feel they are in danger or they have no where else to turn they can call Turning Point and receive the help they need.

It is a worthwhile and well established mission to support.  Go to http://turningpointdvs-com.doodlekit.com/home to check out more about it and to donate directly to it.  You can also donate by using your special offering envelopes and writing Turning Point on the memo line on your check.

DEVOTION: Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended. Isaiah 60:20

Recently, General Electric dug up a time capsule at its Nela Park facility.

When the 100-year-old time capsule was opened, there was a copy of a newspaper, The Plain Dealer, dated March 21, 1912. There was a photograph of five, very proud and dignified-looking men: General Electric's board of directors at that time. There were also five incandescent light bulbs.

One of the bulbs was full of water; one of the bulbs had condensation on the inside, but three of the bulbs looked pretty good. Taking a risk, the folks at the time capsule's opening took one of the bulbs and screwed it in. There was rejoicing all around. The bulb still did what it had been designed to do: it gave light.

Thinking of that little light bulb I tried to imagine all the changes the world has seen since it was carefully placed in its resting place 100 years ago.

Humanity has seen two world wars. We have survived a dust bowl and a global depression. We have seen the rise and fall of empires, an eruption of major advancements in technology and medicine. We have even sent men to the moon.

Yes, some things have changed in those 100 years, and some things have not.

The craftsmen whose skilled hands built those bulbs are gone now. The folks who celebrated when the time capsule was placed have all left us. Even those five wealthy, well-dressed men on GE's board of directors have had to say their earthly goodbyes.

No, some things don't change.

This is why you and I should rejoice that the Lord's Light is still doing His job. Almost 2,000 years ago the body of Jesus of Nazareth was placed into a grave, a time capsule, of sorts. By human law, He should have stayed there. But He didn't. Three days after His burial, Jesus came out of that time capsule and showed to all that He was the Light of the world.

Because of Jesus we were freed from darkness. Because of Him we were moved into the light. Because of Him the dark grave had lost its terrible hold on our souls.

In Jesus God's light shone into our darkness.

That is cause for rejoicing all around. God's Son had brought light to our dark world.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, this sinful world has much that is dark. I give thanks Your Son has provided the light, which dispels that darkness and illuminates my life. May I give thanks for the brightness of Your love. In Jesus' Amen.

DEVOTION: Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea. 2 Corinthians 11:25

I wonder if Adrian Vasquez feels blessed or cursed.

He might feel he is cursed because he had to bury two of his friends at sea. On February 24th he and his pals went fishing. They were headed back to their home port of Rio Hato when the boat's motor conked out.

After two weeks, one of the lads stopped eating and drinking. He died on March 10th. Because of dehydration, sunburn and heat stroke, Vasquez's second friend passed away on March 15th. When their bodies began to decompose, he had to consign them to the sea.

Now you know why Vasquez might feel cursed.

And why should he feel blessed? Sometime after his water had been depleted, it stormed. It stormed enough that Vasquez was able to refill that five-gallon water container. That water and the raw fish he was able to catch sustained him for the rest of his ordeal.

But there's more to Vasquez's blessings. By a minor miracle he was spotted by some commercial fishermen. They picked him up and turned him over to Ecuador's Coast Guard.

Vasquez had been adrift for 28 days. That beats St. Paul's "a night and a day" adrift at sea.

Still, I wonder if when you're adrift, when you don't know what is going to happen -- or if anything is going to happen -- it doesn't make any difference how many days pass. You're really, truly alone.

Or are you?

Now it's true no human knew where Vasquez was, but that doesn't mean he was alone. The living Lord Jesus Christ who had given His life to save Vasquez's eternal soul was fully aware of the lad's location. Indeed, there was never a moment when Vasquez managed to slip off the Lord's radar.

Now if that's true for Vasquez, it is also true for you.

Although I don't know what your situation or circumstance might be, it is entirely likely that many thousands of the Daily Devotion readers may feel they also are alone ... lost ... adrift.

If that describes you, remember, the Lord knows, and He cares, and He is with you.

And that answers our original question. Adrian, you, me ... we're all blessed. We have a Savior, a Redeemer, a Friend -- a very present help in time of trouble.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I feel adrift, send an extra measure of the Holy Spirit, so I might realize and appreciate the blessings of having Jesus as my Savior. Because of Him I shall never be alone. In His Name. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:    Who was Michal? She was the daughter of Saul and wife of David. (Dianne Hance is the coolest cat in town when it comes to the daily quiz!)

Note:  the answer I gave for last week's quiz question was wrong.  Saul had asked his armor bearer to take his sword and kill him, but te armor bearer wouldn't do it, so Saul took his own sword and killed himself.  then the armor bearer took his own sword and fell upon it, thus killing himself.) Thanks to Dianne Hance for pointing this out.  I can honestly say that  even though I have read this five or six times I forgot exactly how it happened.  That proves that you can never read the Bible enough.

TODAY'S QUIZ: WHo was Uriah?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
CATECHISM
Question: Why is the first person of the Trinity called the Father?
Answer:
a. God is the Father of my Lord, Jesus Christ, and also my Father through faith in Christ.
b. He is also my father because He created me and all creatures.  Strictly speaking there is only one human race, because all human beings are equally the children of Adam and Eve and are equally redeemed by Christ.
