FW: Prayers answered

A couple of weeks ago I requested prayers for Lynsey (4 months old) and her family.

She had a stroke and the family was told she wouldn't survive very long.

Yesterday she went home healed.  She will require surgery in the future on her heart but for now she is healthy and home with her family as of yesterday.

The parents have asked that I send their thanks and gratefulness for all the prayers from our church…amazed that so many prayed for her and didn't know her.

Thank you for passing on this wonderful news!

Happy blessed Easter to us all!!

Lynn

more info on the ALPHA course starting on the 17th

Many have been asking questions about this ALPHA course coming up and whether or not it is really for them.  I owould simply say yes, but below is a bunch of information for you to make your decision!  Read it over and then let Sandy know if you will attend.  Remember, this is the perfect outreach opportunity to the unchurched who are searching!

What is Alpha?

Alpha gives everyone the opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha course usually meets once a week for 10 weeks, including a one-day or weekend getaway.  Sessions begin with a meal, followed by a short talk and time to discuss what's been taught.

During the discussion, everyone is welcome to contribute their opinions and  no question is considered  hostile or too simple.  Questions might include—Is there a God? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going?

Courses vary in size, from one small group meeting in a home, to hundreds of people in a church. Some courses are held over morning coffee or during a lunch hour. Most are evening courses, typically lasting 2 hours.

Who Is Alpha For?

Alpha is for anyone and people attend from all backgrounds, religions, and viewpoints. They come to investigate questions about the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus and more. Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that really changes life. Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships that are built during the Alpha course.

Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone is welcome.

How Much Will It Cost?

There is no charge for attending the Alpha course. Some courses might ask for a small contribution to help cover meal and weekend getaway costs.

What Happens At Alpha?

Each gathering begins with a meal or refreshments - a chance to get to know others. Then there is a short talk which looks at a different aspect of the Christian faith each week. This is followed by a time of discussion in small groups, where everyone is welcome to contribute their opinion and ask questions. People usually stay in the same small groups for the duration of the course so they can get to know each other, continue discussions and deepen friendships. The emphasis is upon exploration and discovery in a relaxed and informal environment.

The talks each week cover the following topics, which serve as a springboard for the small group discussions:

  Introduction Dinner:

Is there more to life than this?

  Week 1:

Who is Jesus?

  Week 2:

Why did Jesus die?

  Week 3:

How can we have faith?

  Week 4:

Why and how do I pray?

  Week 5:

Why and how should I read the Bible?

  Week 6:

How does God guide us?

  Week 7:

How can I resist evil?

  Week 8:

Why & how should we tell others?

  Week 9:

Does God heal today?

  Week 10:

What about the Church?

  Week 11:

Who is the Holy Spirit?

    Week 12:

What does the Holy Spirit do?

How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?

How can I make the most of the rest of my life?

NOTE:

In many Alpha Courses the topics that we have noted above for weeks 11 & 12, plus the last two, are often covered in a week-end retreat type setting.

Since we are meeting just on Tuesday evenings, the topics covered during each week may be a little different than the schedule above or topics may be combined on some nights.

DEVOTION:

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1

It was quiet in the Ardennes on Sunday, December 16th, 1944.

People were preparing for their first, free Christmas since the Nazis had been run out. It was then that hundreds of German artillery pieces opened up on American positions. Two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand German soldiers marched in; one thousand tanks rolled in. On the 22nd the Germans called for the surrender of Bastogne by General A.C. McAuliffe. History records his simple reply: "Nuts!"

History has almost ignored the words of a young soldier from the South, who was also in Bastogne.

Being a relatively new replacement, you might expect him to be shaking in his boots. He wasn't. He seemed so calm that one of his comrades asked him something like, 'You do know the Krauts have us completely surrounded, don't you?"

"Yup," came back the reply. "I feel sorry for 'em."

"What do you mean you feel sorry for them? We're the ones who are surrounded."

"Yup, but if'n I understand correctly, this is the fust time in this war we kin attack the enemy in any which way we want."

I like the spirit of that fellow.

You know, when I look at the world, I sometimes feel like the Christian Church is surrounded by enemies, all of whom are calling for us to surrender. On one side there are those who deny and challenge Scripture; over there are the persecuting members of other religions; on that side are those preachers who make up false doctrine as they go along.

It seems like those who are followers of the Christ can go in any direction they want, and they will end up witnessing to the Savior. If that's the case -- and I believe it is -- we ought to remember the words of Scripture that serve as our text.

God is our refuge. He is our strength. He is our help.

No matter what enemy comes up against us, we who have been saved by Jesus Christ, who have been given faith in Him, are not alone. God has promised to be with us. Even more, we have His assurance no matter what happens on the spiritual battlefields of this world, we will be given the final -- the ultimate -- victory.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, there are days when we feel surrounded by great and menacing forces. Grant us to know that in Jesus we are conquerors, indeed, more than conquerors. Then, reassured and fortified, let us do the work You have entrusted to us. In the Savior's Name. Amen.

TODAY'S QUIZ: How did King Saul die?
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
CATECHISM
First article: I believe in God, teh Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and eart.
Question: What does this mean?
Answer:  I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them.
He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have.  he richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life.
He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil.
Al lthis He does only out of Fatherly divine good ness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me.  For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey him.  This is most certainly true.

Jonas's Updates

Tuesday, April 3rd

Posted 26 minutes ago
Jonas handled this past six days in the hospital reatively effortlessly. He is so on top of his procedure and medications now that he is almost able to pre-emp the vomiting and pain by requesting what he needs before he needs it. The poking, proding, poisoning, beeping, and monitoring is still detestable, but manageable. Distraction plays a good part in there, too. He spent lots of time playing his bass, playing Draw It with friends on the internet (thank you Vicki White for turning him on to that = ), reading more of his Artemis Fowl series (thank you Arlene), pouring over and over his flight book (thank you Matt Minx) and visiting with friends (thank you Susan, Linda, and Dylan. Becky we missed you but thank for coming all the way down to the hospital, and for the goodies!).
The most memorable part of his stay this time was a special visit he got from Lt. Derek Johnson, a chinook pilot and part of the transport team that flew the infamous Seal Team 6. He came to the hospital to bring Jonas a special gift. Derek was stationed in Afghanistan when Jonas was diagnosed with cancer last summer. Jonas was on a baseball team with Derek's nephew, Dylan Pappas, who told him by phone about Jonas's situation as it unfolded. Derek made a large Get Well banner for Jonas right there in Afghanistan and thirty or so men signed it. About a dozen of them posed with it in front of the chopper that was to bring the men home. It is beautiful, with warm wishes of encouragement from some of the most courageous, dedicated, and giving men on the planet. Some of you may remember - because several of that group were from the Kansas City area- that this chopper was hit by an IED in the air, taking out one of the roters and killing all the men on the chopper, including several of the Navy Seals. Derek was not on that flight because he was staying behind for surgery and had kept the banner to travel home with him so that he could hand-deliver it to Jonas. You can read more about the men who went down in the crash at this link:
http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/08/portraits_of_navy_seals_killed.html
As Jonas ran his hands across the signatures and emblems it was very sobering to hear that 70% of the men who were reaching out to comfort and encourage Jonas had lost their lives in service to protect us all. We will never forget their courageous mission and their generosity of spirit. Thank you Lt. Johnson for your service to our country and for bringing Jonas such a memorable momento. This is a treasure for him which we are having framed and hung in his room. There are not enough words to describe our respect and admiration. Thank you so much.

Libby Pailer update

Lib has had a barrage of health nurses visits. Each one is more encouraging than the last. This AM Wed. a nurse from Doctor Bains , Lib's primary came and made a report to the doctor/. Her doctor was worried about her even though she is scheduled to see her thursday. The Occupational nurse was here right after. He checked her out and had her do the exercises. They really do a comprehensive background check for safety and her ability to function at home. I am glad to say my love passed with flying colors. She does this in spite if me (smile). I can see her improving daily. One thing of note. Lib showered this afternoon. She shampooed her own hair. I no longer look like a drowned rat but more like a wet noodle. Great improvement. Keep the prayers coming . Love Lib and Larry P

Libby Pailer update

From Larry Pailer

Today (Friday)was the day. The other half of my life returned home. Lib made it home today at 10:30 AM. She felt good and slept in the recliner passenger seat all the way home. we have her escounced in her own bed. 5 minutes after we arrived the Oxygen therapist arrived and set it up. She may or may not need it. They checked her level and it was 94. Anything above 90 is good. She sat outside in the sun for about 1/2 hour. Did get a stomach cramp that hurt her for about 2 hours but it finally passed. It was a result of something she ate. She slept on her right for the first time in 3 weeks. Great progress. We have a regular hospital set up here and it works for us. i'll have to get a little tougher tommorrow and get her to exercise. I figured she needed a little rest on her first day back. Your prayers are really powerful. Pray that I do the right things for her. God's blessings to all of you. Larry and Lib
PS could you all sneak in a prayer for a good friend who is undergoing Chemo. Dolores De Blaze. I am sure our Saviour will hear your supplication and help her. Thanks

DEVOTION:
(Jesus said) "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 7:12

Many thanks to Frank Kohn, designer and editor at Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod communications for calling this topic to our attention. It is greatly appreciated.

"The church is no good and filled with hypocrites."

In recent years a lot of folks have been saying things like that. They believe it, too. Maybe that's because they've never heard of Grapevine Faith Christian School.

Not so long ago, Grapevine's nine-time state championship team was to play Gainesville State School, a maximum correctional facility for boys 12 to 19. Now I don't want to put those Gainesville boys down. In order to play on the team they have to have served half their sentence, had no nasty incidents and maintain certain academic standards. Still, Gainesville has no cheerleaders, no fans in the stands and none of the bells and whistles that can make a great team even greater.

The game should have been a physical and personal massacre for those Gainesville boys.

It wasn't.

It wasn't because Grapevine's coach, Kris Hogan, saw this as a witness opportunity and not just a football game. That's why he sent letters to all the parents. He asked them to sit on the Gainesville side of the field, so the team would have some fans. Next he ran off a roster of the Gainesville boys, so they would be cheered for as individuals. But the coach wasn't done yet. The Grapevine cheerleaders were divided and half of them rooted for the Gainesville group.

Faith beat Gainesville 33 to 14.

But when the uniformed police officers led the Gainesville boys back to their bus, each of them was given a burger, fries and Coke, by the players from the Grapevine Faith team. They were also handed a Bible and an encouraging letter written by a Grapevine player.

Before everybody went their separate ways, the losing Gainesville coach grabbed Coach Hogan by the shoulders. He looked him in the eye and said, "You'll never know what your people did for these kids tonight. You'll never, ever know."

Probably not. But the Lord knows, and now you know.

So what is the purpose of this devotion? To praise Coach Hogan? Naw. These Daily Devotions don't do that. We praise the Lord Jesus whose love motivated Coach Hogan to do what he did.

And I still wouldn't have told the story if I didn't believe there are hundreds, maybe thousands of Coach Hogans reading this devotion, who need a bit of inspiration to try and do the same kind of thing, when the Lord gives them the opportunity.

Don't know if it would work, but it would sure give the critics of Christ and His Church something to think about, wouldn't it?

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, we love because You first loved us. Today we pray that when the Holy Spirit presents us with opportunities to share the joy of Jesus, we may respond with a glad heart. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
