DEVOTION:

The LORD said) "You shall have no other gods before Me." Deuteronomy 5:7

When most of us hear that commandment, our minds conjure up images of people bowing down before some stone statue.

An article which recently appeared in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease says that kind of thinking probably needs to be changed. "Forget carved idols," the survey says, "and replace that idea with one in which our neighbors, friends, co-workers, and family members worship movie, television, recording and sports stars."

According to a study done by psychologists at the University of Leicester, 36 percent of the people polled have some form of the idolatry they call, "CWS" ("celebrity worship syndrome"). Dr John Maltby, the man who conducted the survey, says folks with CWS are actively worshipping this world's rich and famous.

The article notes that celebrity worship syndrome can range from the mild to the wild.

Those who have a mild case of celebrity worship syndrome usually talk on and on and on about their idol. Those with a wilder form of CWS have convinced themselves they have an actual, authentic relationship with the star: a relationship in which the star not only knows them, but is taking a personal interest in their lives.

And if you're wondering whether celebrity worship syndrome is a real religion, Dr. Maltby is inclined to say, "There are some pretty close comparisons between the two ...."

For example, folks with CWS come together and support each other like a good congregation does; folks with CWS recruit new members like a good church does, and people with CWS promote their belief system, even as they denigrate others.

So, do I believe this report? I do. I've seen people call into the Home Shopping Network and talk to the salespeople, as if they were old friends. Before and after every Academy Awards show I've heard commentary on what a star wore, what they looked like and what they said. I've listened as sports commentators shared the most trite and trivial details of an athlete's life.

Yes, I believe the report, and I also believe it is a sad thing when people are more concerned about a movie star, than they are with their own soul. It's a potential tragedy when a human heart is fixated on an athlete or singer rather than the Savior.

I can understand why God would be a jealous God.

How disappointed He must be to see people set His perfect Son's sacrifice up on the shelf, so they might worship a sinful human being. How sad He must be to see the Savior set aside for an American idol.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, send Your Holy Spirit upon souls who are searching for someone to respect, love and worship. Turn them from following the finite so they may worship You and Your infinite love, as seen in their crucified and ever-living Savior. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:
(Jesus said) "For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect." Matthew 24:24

You probably have never heard of Ofcom.

I hadn't either -- not until I read that Ofcom, the organization that watches over media in the United Kingdom, has fined a religious broadcast channel $40,000 for the equivalent of false advertising.

False advertising? Yup. False advertising!

According to Ofcom, if a pastor is going to say that his "Miracle Olive Oil Soap" can cure cancer, diabetes and heart problems, he ought to have proof: solid, incontrovertible proof.

If the tele-preacher doesn't have that kind of evidence, he ought not to be making the claim. And he most certainly shouldn't charge an exorbitant price for selling that soap to his desperate supporters.

For a number of reasons, I think the Lord and His disciples would agree.

Reason One - They would agree because -- unlike these modern-day false prophets -- Jesus and His associates never charged anyone for the miracles of healing that were performed. That gift, along with so many other blessings which come from the Christ, was offered freely.

Reason Two - Just as importantly, while I have heard the Savior say, "Your faith has made you well," never, never, never did He say, "This bar of Miracle Olive Oil Soap has healed you."

Reason Three - Lastly, and most importantly, Jesus' representatives must always point people to the Savior and not to themselves. That's what Peter and John did when the Lord healed the beggar on the temple steps. Speaking for both the apostles, "Peter said, 'I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!'" (Acts 3:6).

Yes, Jesus would agree, and He would also say any person who doesn't lead His listeners to the cross and empty tomb is a "false prophet." He is a false prophet, whose message should be left unheard.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, please keep me steadfast in Your Word. Bless pastors and parishes who point people to their Savior and the salvation He has won and, if it is possible, muzzle false prophets, who preach anything other than Christ crucified and risen. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:

(The LORD said) "My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. From mountain to hill they have gone. They have forgotten their fold." Jeremiah 50:6

In the 1940s, Frank Sinatra made a song popular. That song begins this way: "New York, New York, it's a wonderful town; the Bronx is up but the Battery's down."

As far as I can tell, the Bronx and Battery are still as described, but I'm no longer convinced that New York is a "wonderful town."

Here's the problem: New York rents school space to hundreds of organizations, including dozens of churches. For budding congregations, for financially strapped churches, for denominations deciding where to place a parish, renting space from the city has always been a blessing.

Sadly, the City of New York feels this is a violation of church and state. That's why, since 1985, they have been trying to get these churches out of the schools. Last year, a federal court agreed with New York and now the Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal from those churches.

Simply stated, the churches are being turned out.

Ms. Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said, "... freedom for a church to take over a school and convert it to a house of worship is not what our Constitution stands for."

I wonder what the courts and Ms. Lieberman would say if, next election day, all the churches which are used for voting would decree, "freedom for the government to take over a church hall and convert it to a polling place is not what our Constitution stands for."

My friends, the truth is this: buildings don't get converted. For a church to rent an unused school building for a few hours on a Sunday doesn't change the complexion of that building. The children won't come in on Monday and say, "Ooohhh, I feel strange vibrations; there must have been a cross in here."

How sad. Once again political-correctness-gone-amuck has had its way, and a relationship which has been beneficial to everyone is over. Once again it appears that "Their shepherds have led them astray. They have forgotten their fold."

All the more reason for us, who have been washed in the Savior's blood, to lift up our nation in prayer. Let God's people let Him know there are still some who remember His help and handiwork.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, there are places in this richly blessed country which don't want You. Send Your Holy Spirit to change those hearts. Let them realize what You have done and still do for us as a country, for us as individuals. May the story of the Savior's life, death and resurrection be openly shared everywhere. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION: (Jesus said) "But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Matthew 6:33

Not so long ago there was a movie playing in theaters called, The Bucket List.

The title of the film dealt with some men who tried to check off all the things they wanted to do before they "kicked the bucket." If the expression is new to you, kicking the bucket is just another word for dying.

For a lot of reasons, most of us never expect to accomplish or fulfill all the dreams which are being indefinitely carried on our bucket lists.

That is not the case for a 55-year-old Butte, Montana, man named John C. Hughes. Hughes is a man who is pursuing his bucket list with a vengeance.

Let me explain: Hughes' bucket story begins with him following a police car for a few blocks. Then, without warning, he put the pedal to the metal, flew by the officer and headed for the highway.

The officer who followed him said Hughes reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, before his vehicle was brought to a stop outside Rocker, Montana. After his arrest Hughes shared the reason why he had risked life and limb. He said he had "always wanted" to be part of a police chase, and now he can take this item off his bucket list.

This leads me to ask what's on your bucket list?

It is my sincere hope that it is something more constructive and less life-threatening than Hughes' high-speed chase. It is my prayer your days will be spent pursuing something of greater value than that which endangers your life, the life of a policeman and a caboodle of innocents.

So, seriously, what's on your list?

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus suggests what should be at the top of everyone's list: "Seek first the Kingdom of God." Everything else needs to take a back seat to that. That's because when we have been made part of the family of faith through Jesus' blood-bought redemption the big stuff has been taken care of.

So, after that, what's on your bucket list? Would you allow me to suggest that while you have the most important item, others do not? Will you not commit yourself to encouraging one person ... just one ... to consider the Savior?

To reach a soul for the Savior, that, too, would be an item worth putting on your bucket list.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for sending Your Son to sacrifice Himself for my salvation is love beyond human understanding. Still, because of what He has done I am saved. May I share that truth with others? This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

Greetings in the precious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
On Thursday, Synod President Matthew C. Harrison was one of several witnesses to provide testimony during the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform's hearing, "Lines Crossed: Separation of Church and State. The LCMS views the recent birth control mandate from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as one that infringes on our religious rights. Harrison told the committee members: "While we are opposed in principle, not to all forms of birth control, but only abortion-causing drugs, we stand with our friends in the Catholic Church and all others, Christians and non-Christians, under the free exercise and conscience provisions of the U.S. Constitution. Religious people determine what violates their consciences, not the federal government."
We implore you to keep the country and our elected leaders in your prayers.
"To paraphrase Martin Luther, the heart and conscience has room only for God, not for God and the federal government," Harrison said. "The bed is too narrow, the blanket is too short. We must obey God rather than men, and we will."

Jonas got out of the hospital last Saturday and will go back into the hospital on Friday for five days of chemo. Originally, he was scheduled for this cycle two weeks ago this coming Wednesday -- but the infections put that on hold. They called and asked us to be there this Wednesday, but gave us the option to wait until Friday. Well, that was a no-brainer for us. Two more days would not hurt anything at this point and would acutally be a welcome breather. So, Jonas has two more days to recouperate.
Some of you may have heard that Luke Minx, the older brother of Jonas' twin friends, Chris and Nick Minx, is on American Idol this year. Luke is uber-talented, a great role model, and has such a loving family. I'm telling you about him because he is writing a song for Jonas called Hold On. It is beautiful!!! So far there is only a preview snippet you can watch and Jonas can't wait to hear the rest! Today is Valentine's Day and I hope this message finds you celebrating with the one's you love. Today, our hearts are full here at the Borchert household. If nothing else, cancer sure makes you appreciate all the things you love in this life. The love of dear family and friends is number one. Thank you all for helping us to remember that. Hold your loved ones close tonight and cherish the memories. They all seem to fly by so fast.

Hey Jonas! :) It makes me feel SO happy to know that you are getting better. :D . I remember last year when you wore a northface jacket and and everyone noticed that you looked fantastic in it. So you are obviously the reason those jackets are so popular at PLMS. I hope your day is brighter knowing that you are the biggest fashion king and that you choose what middleschoolers wear. :)You are in my prayers every day and I know that God loves you! :) Have a very Happy-pappy Valentines day.
