Subject: COMMUNITY HOME REPAIR MINISTRY UPDATE
Date: Fri, 3 Feb 2012 15:44:24 -0600

Greetings, Friends in Christ!  You are receiving this because you or someone from your church or group has participated or shown interest in the Community Home Repair Ministry.  This ministry is based out of College United Methodist Church in Warrenton, but is open to anyone in our community to participate.  Just to refresh your memory, this is a ministry open to any group in our area who has the heart to help others in need and wishes to help a family or individual make their dwelling safer or more livable.  We receive referrals through Agape Ministry of Warren County who determines the need of the family or individual and refers them to our group.  I receive the referrals at present and we send a couple of individuals to review the projects in advance to determine if it is something that can be done by volunteers with a knowledgeable leader(s).  At present, we are not listing projects on the CUMC website and I will begin sending them to those on the above Distribution List.  If you do not wish to be on the Distribution List, please let me know.  Recent projects have included wheel chair ramps and a roof patching job, but they can vary greatly.  With spring just around the corner, the number of referrals may increase.  If you or someone from your group has an interest in reaching out to others in the name of Christ by helping in this ministry, we would love to have you participate!!  We have also had some projects done by youth groups which can be a great way to involve them in reaching out to our community.  We will provide specific information about any of the projects which come along and always let groups look at them before they make a decision to "adopt" a project.  Groups adopting projects generally provide the materials and volunteers to complete the project, but occasionally we are able to assist with funding.  Please contact me if you or someone in your group has questions or interest in this ministry!  We have many good stories of how this ministry has touched the lives of others!  Thanks for your time!

In Christ,

Dave Current, College United Methodist Church

DEVOTION:
But He (Christ) said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

When General Lee came up the road toward Gettysburg, there was a German lady named Hannah, who tried to protect her town. She grabbed a broom and stood in the middle of the road to block the Southern Army. With smiles the Confederates gently moved her to the side.

Years later, Hannah explained, "I didn't think I could do anything, but I wanted them to know what side I was on."

Last month, up around Anchorage, Alaska, an 85-year-old lady, Dorothea Murphy showed the world whose side she was on.

Taking his golden retrievers with him, her husband, a retired bush pilot, had gone out for a walk. He hadn't gone far before the dogs alerted, and he spotted a moose. At the same time the moose spotted him.

The husband, George, dove into a snow bank for protection. It didn't help much. The moose started to stomp him.

That's when 97-pound, 5-foot-tall Dorothea went into action. She grabbed a grain shovel and started to hit the moose. She hit the moose in the body and in the head, and the moose beat a retreat.

Understand, hitting a moose with a shovel is not a recommended practice in Alaska -- or anywhere else. Even so, Dorothea felt she had to show whose side she was on.

It was sort of like Moses at Pharaoh's court, King David standing before the giant Goliath or the apostles taking their first steps to bring the story of the Savior's salvation to the Roman world.

Each of these had to show whose side they were on.

I guess anyone who has really seen the commitment and compassion, the surrender and the sacrifice of the Savior cannot remain unmoved. That's why when the chips are down and a challenge presents itself, the Holy Spirit empowers us to action -- to do what is necessary so we might show whose side we are on.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, You have told us to take a stand for the Saviors who gave His life, so we might be forgiven and saved. There are times when taking that stand can be mighty intimidating. At such moments, replace our fear with a desire to show the world whose side we are on. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  What is an ephod?  (I am not sure who was the winner last Thursday, but here is an elongated and not completely correct answer from Pat King)
An ephod, is the fore-runner of an iPod. And people call me stupid!

Anyway, according to the Jewish encyclopedia, it has 2 – not 1!! – but 2 meanings. And they should know.

Meaning #1:

In the Old Testament this word has two meanings; in one group of passages it signifies a garment; in another, very probably an image. In the former the ephod is referred to in the priestly ordinances as a part of the official dress of the high priest, and was to be made of threads "of blue and of purple, of scarlet, and fine twined linen," and embroidered in gold thread "with cunning work" (Ex. xxviii. 4 et seq., xxix. 5, xxxix. 2 et seq.; Lev. viii. 7).

Meaning #2:

The word "ephod" has an entirely different meaning in the second group of passages, all of which belong to the historical books. It is certain that the word can not here mean a garment. This is evident in Judges viii. 26-27, where it is recorded that Gideon took the golden earrings of the Midianites, weighing 1,700 shekels of gold, and made an "ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah," where it was worshiped by all Israel. In Judges xvii. 5 Micah made an ephod and teraphim for his sanctuary. I Sam. xxi. 9 records that an ephod stood in the sanctuary at Nob, and that Goliath's sword was kept behind it. In these passages it is clear that something other than a mantle or article of attire is meant. Even where the phrase "to carry" the ephod occurs, it is evident from the Hebrew "nasa'" that reference is made to something carried in the hand or on the shoulder (comp. I Sam. xxiii. 6).
The most natural inference from all these passages is that "ephod" here signifies an image that was set up in the sanctuary, especially since the word is cited with Teraphim, which undoubtedly refers to an image (comp. Hosea iii. 4). This assumption obtains strong confirmation from the fact that in Judges xvii. 3 et seq., which is compiled from two sources, the words "pesel" and "massekah" (graven image and molten image) are used interchangeably with "ephod" and "teraphim."

ANOTHER WONDERFUL WORSHIP WAS HAD YESTERDAY IN ALL THREE SERVICES!!

Even though there weren't as many people there yesterday because our preschool kids weren't singing, we still had a great congregation and all were blessed with God's Word and Sacraments!  Keep inviting and bringing your friends, family, and all who need to grow in Christ.  SO PRETTY MUCH BRING EVERYONE!!!

The only way our worship attendance is going to grow and our church is going to grow is if EVERYONE gets involved, EVERYONE invites people to church, and EVERYONE promotes St. John's and the wonderful blessings that God provides here, namely HIS WORD, HIS SACRAMENTS, AND HIS FELLOWSHIP!

St. John's Group Email prayer request and update for Jonas Borchert (grandson of Don Nolte)

Jonas's Updates

Posted 1 day ago

Jonas has a second infection called Pseudomonas . . . in his port.
It's the same bug as swimmer's ear. The prescription for this infection is simply antibiotics. It is equally as serious as the Typhlitis but not as painful for him. The doctors haven't said as much, but I would imagine it is double duty for his body to combat at this point.
The resident this morning attested to the fact that he will most likely be here for a couple of weeks.

St. John's Group Email prayer requests from Tammy Miller

Local business owner/building designer, Kevin Gerloff's daughter Heather, could use our prayers.  Heather is a young mother with 3 children and husband.  She has stage four cervical cancer.  (Below is the actual prayer request from Kevin.)

My family could use some also.  My Uncle has been through a lot these last 3 months.  His wife, only 49 years old (my Aunt) passed away unexpectedly from a blood clot.  His mother (my Grandmother) passed away last week.  I am proud to say my Grandmother was 88 years old and still married to her husband (my Grandfather-93 years old) after 69 years of marriage.  My grandparents are an unbelievable couple.  They taught me about Jesus as a young child and encouraged me to become confirmed, which brought me to my faith now.

Thank you,

Tammy Miller

My daughter had cervical cancer and was treated last fall and we had hopes that they had caught it early enough for her to live a long life. I thanked all of you for your prayers but this last Tuesday they did a pet scan and found 2 additional spots and the cancer is in stage 4. They are doing biopsies this next Monday to determine the best treatment.

Again I ask that you say a prayer for Heather and her 3 babies.

Thank you all

Kevin

DEVOTION:
Jesus said) "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on My account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Matthew 5:11-12

According to reports, the 15-year-old Wisconsin boy, a Christian boy, was asked to write an article for his school newspaper.

The article of this Christian teen was to speak against same-sex couples adopting children, while another student was to take the opposing point of view. Both positions were published in the school newspaper.

When a male couple who had adopted a child saw the article against homosexual adoptions, they complained to the school administration. An apology was immediately sent out -- an apology which said the lad's article had been disrespectful and bullying.

Next, the student was called in to the principal's office. Without his parents being notified, the boy spent hours with the man in authority. During that time he was told he was ignorant; he was told he should write an apology and was informed he could be suspended for bullying.

Now if this story is true -- and a fair number of articles indicate that it is -- it's difficult to calculate the number of things which have gone wrong.

* A boy who used Scripture to fulfill an assignment is being penalized for his personal position. That's a violation of freedom of speech and religion.

* That article which ran in the school paper has been censored in the name of political correctness is a violation of freedom of the press.

* Those in authority who are charged with preventing bullying have used their position to bully someone in an inferior position. That is a violation of school rules.

I doubt if the lad feels he is being blessed because -- like the prophets -- he has been persecuted. More likely, he feels he is a victim, who has been told to discount his conscience and that which he has been taught.

It is a sad moment in our nation's history when constitutional rights are set aside and replaced by political correctness.

This is why we need to pray for this student and others, who are boldly taking a stand and who -- like Peter and John -- say, "We must obey God rather than men" (see Acts 5:29). We need to pray that Christians may come together and ask, "Why must we accept that which is against our faith and no one need respect that which we believe?"

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant us young men and women who, in their time, may cling to the cross and proclaim the Savior's salvation to a world which doesn't want to hear. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

The painful intestinal condition Jonas has is called Neutropenic Typhlitis. You can read more about it here:
http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/183791-overview#1
In a nutshell, his entire large intestine is inflamed and infected. The prescription for care is complete bowel rest. No food by mouth. No food by g-tube. He will be getting all of his nutrition (what little he can) by iv. The less work the bowel has to do, the sooner it can repair itself. At this time there is no need for surgery. Whew. This is still a very serious and delicate situation. It could take days or weeks to get under control. Although it is a very critical condition for a pediatric chemo patient, they feel we've caught it early enough to be confident about his recovery. He has not been in this much pain since he first was hospitalized with cancer and I wish there was more we could do to hasten his recovery.
Thank you for all of your warm words of comfort and offers to be of help. Right now I can't even think of what that might be. For the time being, Jonas primarily needs rest. It hurts him to sit or stand, to lay on his back or to contract his muscles. Once he starts to feel better, I know he would love some company.
- - I was interrupted during writing this by his evening CA (nurse's assistant). I'll paraphrase. She said she was our CA last night but we had all gone to sleep so she didn't get to meet us. She wanted us to know how much she LOVES this boy. He was in such pain last night but was still so full of thank yous and I'm sorrys and helpful behavior...and she wanted us to know what a great kid we have. She went on and on. "My all-time favorite patient! " she said. I had to agree.
It reminds me of an anecdote I have told the kids for years. When you squeeze an orange or put pressure on an orange, you get orange juice out. You don't get apple juice or milk or tea. You can only get out what is there inside. It's the same with people. When the pressure is on, what comes out is whatever is inside. If you have stored up anger and hatred, that's what comes out. If you have stored up kindness and good will, calm and perseverance that's what comes out. No one is perfect, and we are all a combination of our best attributes and our flaws. But if I had to witness what I know about Jonas, his character through this so far says it all.

Grace and peace from the Lord Jesus Christ be yours. This is what I pray every time I look out the window, which is a good part of every day. The Bortchert courage and positive thinking is an inspirtation to me. Thanks for allowing me the privilege of being part of your lives.
Love and God Bless,
Jody

I think we are going to have to give this boy some more names. I don't think four are enough to match his courage and grace. Please tell Jonas that he is an inspiration to us all and that we are proud to be his friends. Tell him to stay strong and that this setback is only temporary. We hope that by knowing that we are thinking of him and his struggles, Jonas can gain strength.

So glad you caught it early. Our prayers continue for Jonas and your family. And you are so right about whats on the inside. Love you all and hope to get to see you sometime. We were going thru old pictures the other day and ran across a few of the kids all together. We never dreamed where our futures would take us. Please know that your posts are appreciated and read. Jonas is the most awesome kid! Keep fighting!

We're so sorry to hear about this setback for Jonas. We're thinking of him every day and sending him hopeful thoughts and prayers for peace and healing.
Thank you for sharing with us the axiom you've taught your kids. I always appreciate your focus on kindness, tolerance and compassion. That you've planted this seed within your children is clear. Jonas is much of a human being. So are you.
All our best,
Melvina, Greg and Sage
