St. John's Group Email REVISED CALENDAR Tuesday, Dec 6, 2011

DEVOTION: Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God and everyone that loves is born of God and knows God.  1 John 4:7

This past weekend I  introduced what I call PRAYER AND CARE JOURNALS during the sermon.  These are journals that you can use to list people who may need your prayers or your care and then hold yourself accountable to do it for them.

It is a very simple thing, but one that will help you do what God has called you to do.  That's right.  GOD HAS CALLED YOU TO LOVE!!

As we are all human beings though, we often fall short of God's requirements and commands.  We don't even come close to doing what God wants us to do.  That is why God sent His Son, Jesus to die for us.

That doesn't mean we give up and quit trying to love the Lord our God and our neighbor as ouselves.  It is just the opposite.  By the power of the Holy Spirit who now lives in us, we are able to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.  Because we are saved we are no slaves to HIS righteousness which causes us to strive toward what is ahead and forget about what is behind to take hold of heaven.

I want to urge you to make use of those prayer and care journals, but not out of a sense of duty or because you feel as though you have to.  I want you to use them with a joyful spirit so that you may grow in Christ and grow others in Christ as well.

Prayer:  Lord God, we thank you for giving us the power to pray for and care for others as you have cared for us.  Help us to do it so that both others as well as we ourselves may be blessed by you.  Amen.

St. John's Group Email your funny for the day

AN  ATHEIST  IN  THE  WOODS

An atheist was walking through the woods one day.

'What majestic trees!'

'What powerful rivers!'

'What beautiful animals!'

He said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him.

He turned to look.  He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.

He ran as fast as he could up the path.  He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him.

He looked over his shoulder again and the bear was even closer.

He tripped & fell on the ground.

He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him.

At that instant moment, the Atheist cried out:

'Oh my God!'

Time stopped.

The bear froze.

The forest was silent.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky.

'You deny My existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident.  After all that, do you expect Me to help you out of this predicament?  If I do this for you, then am I to count you as a believer?'

The atheist looked directly into the light, and said: 'It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian?'

'Very well', said the voice.

The light went out.  The sounds of the forest resumed.  And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke:

'Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from Thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.'

DEVOTION: But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

By now many of us have been Christmas shopping.

Most of us are pretty much alike in the things we need to make that annual venture into the mobs of madness, which surround the season of gift giving. We get our car keys, our lists, our checkbooks and credit cards. I am willing to say not a single one of our Daily Devotion readers remembered to bring -- and were planning on using -- their cans of tear gas.

Even so, that is exactly what a woman did at a Los Angeles Wal-Mart. Afraid she would not capture her choice presents, she decided to gas the folks who were waiting in line with her. It appears her plan was a success as she managed to move 200 fellow shoppers out of her way.

Police Lieutenant Abel Parga told the Associated Press the lady was "competitive shopping." That's putting the "best construction on everything." If I had been one of those who had found my eyes watering and my throat burning, I would have referred to the lady as being "an out-of-control, over-stressed individual, who had deliberately and with malice aforethought committed a massive assault and battery upon innocent and unsuspecting shoppers."

What the lady did was terribly wrong and hardly the kind of way God's people ought to remember the Savior's birth. The only positive thing I can say about the woman is that she understood better than most the point St. Paul was making in our Daily Devotion text for today.

By that I mean she was successful as she strained toward what lay ahead; she was solid as she pressed on toward her goal; she was single-minded in her desire to win the prize.

Sadly, the acquisition of Christmas presents -- and not the worshipping of the Christ -- was her goal.

In that, I suppose, she is not alone. Maybe you know some folks who go Christmas shopping, but never worship the Lamb of God.

This is why we who have seen the gift of forgiveness and salvation the Babe of Bethlehem has won should always keep His worship at the forefront of our celebrations. The world may see the gifts, but we need to see God's great gift of grace which comes to us in the Person of His Son.

Worshipping and sharing the Savior ... that is the goal toward which we must press this Advent, and always.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, keep me ever mindful that while earthly gifts and presents are nice, they are but a shadow of the gift which is given to us in Jesus' birth. May His presence in our hearts keep all our Christmas' celebrations in proper perspective. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Video - Where's The Line To See Jesus - Merry Christmas

A good little video to remind us to keep ourselves focused on Christ and the cross!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

 OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO

About the Song

While at the mall a couple of years ago, my then four year old nephew, Spencer, saw kids lined up to see Santa Claus. Having been taught as a toddler that Christmas is the holiday that Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, he asked his mom, "where's the line to see Jesus"?

My sister mentioned this to my dad, who immediately became inspired and jotted words down to a song in just a few minutes. After putting music to the words, and doing a quick recording at home, he received a great response from friends. He sent the song off to Nashville without much response, except for a Christian song writer who suggested adding a bridge at the end of the first chorus. My dad then asked if I wanted to record the song to see what we could do with it. I listened to the song, made a few changes to the words to make it flow better, and we headed to Shock City Studios.

It was at the studio where Chris, owner and producer, rewrote the 2nd verse and part of the chorus... with goose bumps and emotions high, we were all hopeful and felt like we had something special. The demo was recorded in just under 2 hours and sent off again to Nashville... still no response.

Then 2 weeks before Christmas last year, my cousins Greg and Robbie decided to do a video to see what we could accomplish on YouTube. The first day we had 3000 hits and it soared from there. We received e-mails, phone calls, Facebook messages from people all over asking for the music, CD's, iTunes, anything... we had nothing. After a couple of meetings with Chris following the amazing response, we got serious. We headed back into the studio this past spring... this time with guitars, drums, bass, pianos, choirs... the real deal.... and here we are today.

Getting iTunes set up, a website put together, and loving that thousands upon thousands of Christians have come together... remembering the true meaning of Christmas. Out of the mouths of babes come profound truths that many adults can not understand. Hopefully Spencer's observation will cause people all over to reflect on the love of Jesus, and that one day we will all stand in line to see Him. We are most thankful to our Heavenly Father to have this chance to share our music with you. Merry Christmas everyone.

Jonas's Updates

These are some very tough days for Jonas. The one-two punch of chemo and ratiation is very difficult to bear. Just over a month ago when Jonas was between the induction phase and the consolidation phase with radiation just beginning, he was feeling faily well and putting on weight. He worked his way back into the chemotherapy and two weeks ago had one of his worst experiences with chemo in a long time. Additionally, the affects of the radiation are cumulative and as he gets further and further into the regimine it is so painful. It has caused a pretty good burn on his left temple, cheek and inside his mouth, the roof and throat. The chemo too causes sores on the muscosa membranes inside his mouth and throughout his digestive tract. Because of this and because the radiation has caused a tightening of the muscles on the left side of his face (and he can barely open his mouth again) he is once again being fed through the tube on his abdomen ( his g-tube ). Just swallowing is painful and he talks very little, if at all. It just hurts to move his tongue. This past week he has been fighting some infection and has had several blood tranfusions and courses of antibiotics. He is losing weight again, riding in the wheelchair instead of walking and his spirits are low. But we are nearing the end of radiation. He has only two more treatments of radiation to go... which is good news, but the bad news is ... he has two more treatments of radiation to go. Then proton therapy radiation will be over. Chemotherapy will continue through the end of March, at least.
I have been having trouble getting pictures to upload on this page lately but will try again today, especially so that when he gets back you won't be too surprised at how he looks.
Lots of people have been asking when he will be back in Kansas City. Our plan is to leave Houston over this upcoming weekend. He is very adamant about going up to school sometime next week, probably not to attend any classes but to to make arrangements for next semester and to see some teachers and friends. Of course all this is dependent upon his health and what he can tolerate....even the travel. We will see.
Thank you for all your well-wishing. Every word of encouragement and hope is dear to our hearts.

Thinking about all of you....now and always. As much as I hated going through it all...I would rather be going through it again instead of Jonas suffering like he is. It breaks my heart reading everything you say and knowing and understanding how he feels. I have something for Jonas that I brought back from Germany but haven't gotten around to sending it. But I guess if you guys will be home soon I can hand deliver it. Sending lots of love and hugs to both of you.

Know that you are ALWAYS in our thoughts and looking forward to seeing you here at home soon - you have endured so very much - more than any of us can imagine - wishing we could ease your pain in some way, but just remember how very loved you are and the number of people behind you - you are a remarkable young man - we love you!!!

Kristen, I have been following your journey with you through this site. I am in awe of your courage and strength and your faith. What a couragous woman you are. Although, it doesn't surprise me, you were always such a wonderful person in high school and always wore a smile on your face. I remember your encouragement to others as well. I am praying for all of you and hope that your family will all be together soon. I am also praying for Jonas to get much needed relief from his pain. What a remarkable young man you have. I am lifting you up today that HIS mighty hands will comfort you and comfort Jonas' pain.

My heart breaks for your son. There's just so much for him to bear.
I know that he is a strong young man and is so profoundly loved and well supported. But this would be hard on a grown man 10 times his size. It's not surprising that his spirits are low and his courage is tested.
I hope it will help him to remember that a brave person doesn't need to feel brave every moment of the day. Being brave isn't about never feeling fear or anger or being tired - it's being all those things and stepping up to meet the challenges anyway.
He has continually done that. So have you. You both are such a testament to the bonds of love: Love when it's easy and when it's hard. Love when it's peaceful and when there's pain. Love when there's first light and darkest night - there is always your love for one another.
I will be thinking of you both through these last couple of radiation treatments and sending you thoughts of peace and healing. I will also keep my fingers crossed that Jonas can get back to school to see his classmates and teachers very soon.
I have a feeling that he will find over 1,000 pairs of open arms waiting for him. And so many for you.
My best to you,
Mel

Jonas, you are so strong!! You can do this, Honey!! Just a little longer. We know you can do it. We are praying the infection goes quickly, and that the pain becomes manageable.
