Jonas's Updates
November 30
Posted 9 hours agoThese are some very tough days for Jonas. The one-two punch of chemo and ratiation is very difficult to bear. Just over a month ago when Jonas was between the induction phase and the consolidation phase with radiation just beginning, he was feeling faily well and putting on weight. He worked his way back into the chemotherapy and two weeks ago had one of his worst experiences with chemo in a long time. Additionally, the affects of the radiation are cumulative and as he gets further and further into the regimine it is so painful. It has caused a pretty good burn on his left temple, cheek and inside his mouth, the roof and throat. The chemo too causes sores on the muscosa membranes inside his mouth and throughout his digestive tract. Because of this and because the radiation has caused a tightening of the muscles on the left side of his face (and he can barely open his mouth again) he is once again being fed through the tube on his abdomen ( his g-tube ). Just swallowing is painful and he talks very little, if at all. It just hurts to move his tongue. This past week he has been fighting some infection and has had several blood tranfusions and courses of antibiotics. He is losing weight again, riding in the wheelchair instead of walking and his spirits are low. But we are nearing the end of radiation. He has only two more treatments of radiation to go... which is good news, but the bad news is ... he has two more treatments of radiation to go. Then proton therapy radiation will be over. Chemotherapy will continue through the end of March, at least.
I have been having trouble getting pictures to upload on this page lately but will try again today, especially so that when he gets back you won't be too surprised at how he looks.
Lots of people have been asking when he will be back in Kansas City. Our plan is to leave Houston over this upcoming weekend. He is very adamant about going up to school sometime next week, probably not to attend any classes but to to make arrangements for next semester and to see some teachers and friends. Of course all this is dependent upon his health and what he can tolerate....even the travel. We will see.
Thank you for all your well-wishing. Every word of encouragement and hope is dear to our hearts.Send a message

Posted 6 hours agoby Alex CharboneauThinking about all of you....now and always. As much as I hated going through it all...I would rather be going through it again instead of Jonas suffering like he is. It breaks my heart reading everything you say and knowing and understanding how he feels. I have something for Jonas that I brought back from Germany but haven't gotten around to sending it. But I guess if you guys will be home soon I can hand deliver it. Sending lots of love and hugs to both of you.Posted 6 hours agoby WENDIE TRENTKnow that you are ALWAYS in our thoughts and looking forward to seeing you here at home soon - you have endured so very much - more than any of us can imagine - wishing we could ease your pain in some way, but just remember how very loved you are and the number of people behind you - you are a remarkable young man - we love you!!!Posted 7 hours agoby Kathy ArgentKristen, I have been following your journey with you through this site. I am in awe of your courage and strength and your faith. What a couragous woman you are. Although, it doesn't surprise me, you were always such a wonderful person in high school and always wore a smile on your face. I remember your encouragement to others as well. I am praying for all of you and hope that your family will all be together soon. I am also praying for Jonas to get much needed relief from his pain. What a remarkable young man you have. I am lifting you up today that HIS mighty hands will comfort you and comfort Jonas' pain.
Kathy ArgentPosted 7 hours agoby Susan KleneSo sorry Jonas has to go through all those horrible side effects. We're praying every day for your comfort and healing Jonas. Glad you will be able to head back home soon!Posted 7 hours agoby mel youMy heart breaks for your son. There's just so much for him to bear.
I know that he is a strong young man and is so profoundly loved and well supported. But this would be hard on a grown man 10 times his size. It's not surprising that his spirits are low and his courage is tested.
I hope it will help him to remember that a brave person doesn't need to feel brave every moment of the day. Being brave isn't about never feeling fear or anger or being tired - it's being all those things and stepping up to meet the challenges anyway.
He has continually done that. So have you. You both are such a testament to the bonds of love: Love when it's easy and when it's hard. Love when it's peaceful and when there's pain. Love when there's first light and darkest night - there is always your love for one another.
I will be thinking of you both through these last couple of radiation treatments and sending you thoughts of peace and healing. I will also keep my fingers crossed that Jonas can get back to school to see his classmates and teachers very soon.
I have a feeling that he will find over 1,000 pairs of open arms waiting for him. And so many for you.
My best to you,
MelPosted 7 hours agoby Becky JacksonJonas, you are so strong!! You can do this, Honey!! Just a little longer. We know you can do it. I've got good news and bad news.
Although that expression is often a fact of life for many of us, for Stacie Crimm it was a definite reality.
The bad news was Crimm had been told she couldn't have children. Period. End of reading.
That is why at the age of 41 she was surprised to find out she was pregnant with the child she had always wanted. You see, I told you there was bad news and good news ...
and bad news.
That came when, a few months into her pregnancy, Crimm was told she had cancer of the neck and head. For her there was a choice. Either she could have the treatment that would save her life and end her unborn child's life, or she could try to carry her child and forfeit her chance for a long life.
I would not hazard to ask you what you would do. You already know what you would do.
Instead, let me tell you what Crimm did. She opted to forego the treatment and give her child a chance for life.
Stacie Crimm died on September 11th. Before she did, from a hospital bed, she had the opportunity of holding her tiny, baby girl -- Dottie Mae.
No matter what you may or may not have done in this lady's place, the truth is this: one person died so another might live.
This, of course, is the story of our Savior. As St. Paul said, we have grace and peace because -- according to God's will and promise -- Jesus gave Himself as the ransom price to save us from our sins and deliver us from a whole wealth of worldly evils.
Sacrificing your child for someone else is probably not what you would have done, but it is the course our Lord took so that we might be saved.
Now I don't know as Dottie Mae grows up how she will feel about that which her mother has done. I pray that you as you grow in faith may become ever more appreciative of the gift of life, which is yours because Jesus Christ died so you might live.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the words "appreciation" and "thanksgiving" are too poor to express what my heart feels for the ultimate gift of Your Son. Please read in my heart the gratitude my tongue cannot express. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.
Oh, Lord, if it's possible, please keep a close eye on Dottie Mae until -- because of Your Son -- she meets her mother face to face. Amen.

Do you ever get amazed at the things people will do to see their names appear in the Guinness World Record Book?
I do, but this is one record I didn't mind. Maybe you agree. Let me see how long it takes before you can guess what this record is.
Clue number one - Wishing to celebrate its 100th anniversary, this record was set by Thorntons in Alfreton, Derbyshire, England.
Clue number two - This record weighed in at 12,770 pounds and was 13 feet square.
Clue number three - Although it took months of planning, it was put together by 50 people over a ten-hour period of time.
Do you have it yet?
The record we're talking about is the world's largest chocolate bar. After it was poured it took three days for the thing to cool off.
Of course, there is one little, tiny question: what do you do with a chocolate bar that weighs in at over six tons? The people at Thorntons have thought of that, too. They're going to get a bunch of axes, chop it up, give it to customers and sell it off in pieces to support various charities.
Six tons of chocolate.
Even the most voracious of chocolate addicts would be hard pressed to put a dent in that thing.
This is pretty much the way it is for sinners and God's grace. We all know that each of us sins a lot. Multiply each of our sins by almost six billion people and you've got a mountain of transgressions: a mountain which seems insurmountable ... is insurmountable for folks like us.
But God is not a person like us. His love has no limitations. His grace is beyond calculation.
Because that is so, when Jesus shouldered our sins and took them to the cross, there was no contest. Jesus eliminated those sins, even as He died our death.
With His resurrection He has shown to all the world the insurmountable goodness of God's love.
It is a record which will never be broken. As the Scripture says, "Greater love has no man than this ..." (see John 15:13).
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the psalmist said, "Oh, how abundant is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You and worked for those who take refuge in You ... (Psalm 31:19a). Truly, dear Lord, there is no one who can come close to the goodness and grace You have given to us in our Redeemer. May I always see how wonderful He is and how blessed I am. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.
YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: Who was Timothy? He was the first "pastor" to the church in Ephesus, and really the first overseer in training mentioned in the Scriptures. He was very young when he started, probably a teenager. His mother Lois and his grandmother Eunice were the ones who taught him all about the Lord Jesus as well as Paul.

Financially, for many people 2011 has not been a great year.
Still, there are always those who manage to do well. If you happen to be one of those, you may want to start putting your Christmas list together. If so, there is no better place to begin than the 2011 Christmas Book of Neiman Marcus.
They do have some interesting gifts. For example, you can get a yurt.
Yes, a yurt.
For those of you who don't know (and I was one), a yurt is a nomadic tent from Mongolia. Of course, this yurt is a cut above most. It is18 feet in diameter, hand-painted, packed chock full of one-of-a-kind, down-filled pillows. Oh, I shouldn't forget; this yurt has a crystal chandelier.
Perhaps, a yurt isn't exactly what you've been hoping for. If so, Neiman Marcus has other ideas.
For example, you could pick up a $125,000 library. This library has great carpets, artful bric-a-brac and paintings. Oh, it also has books, 250 books of your choice.
Still not enough? How about a flower show or a series of flower shows? For only $420,000 you and nine of your friends can be flown by private jet to the tulip festival in Switzerland and the Kifissia flower show in Athens and the Altera rose festival in Avignon. Of course, you won't want to miss the Chelsea flower show in London. That's included, too.
Well, has Neiman Marcus listed the gift that will make you say, "Oh, just what I wanted!"?
Perhaps not.
If that is the case, I would like to point out that Jesus, God's Gift to sinful humanity, was not universally wanted or appreciated when He came to earth.
Herod was the first to try and end the Savior's life. Herod was the first, but he certainly wasn't the only. The people of Nazareth didn't like what Jesus had to say, and they tried to eliminate their most famous Son. The Pharisees were always trying to hatch a plot to take out the Christ, as did the chief priests and the scribes.
Not a very good reaction to God's good Gift, was it? I pray your reaction is different. You see in Jesus we have been given both forgiveness and salvation. This, of course, makes Jesus the perfect Gift which everybody needs.
Only through His life, His sacrifice, His death and resurrection are we saved and heaven becomes a reality. By God's grace this Christmas may our repentant hearts say, "Oh, just what I wanted!"
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the world is filled with stuff I'm supposed to want: things which are supposed to make me feel good. I give thanks that You have -- in Jesus -- given me the Gift I need. In Him may I feel good, as well as saved. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.
YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: Who were the "Synagogue of the Freedmen?Jews of Cyrene and Alezandria as well as the prvinces of Cilicia and Asia. (These were guys who hated Christianity because it was effecting their way of life.
