St. John's Group Email Stand Down help is needed this afternoon at Holy Rosary

The Stand Down is beginning to wind down.  They are in big need of help this afternoon to tear down and clean up.  The more folks there are the faster it will go.  If you can help even just or an hour, just go to Holy rosary and report to someone in charge, preferably Kia Philips.  There will be plenty of work to do.  Unfortunately I am not able to be there as that is when I am getting ready for and doing worship. 
 
A LOT of people have used the services provided today, and still more to come in the next two hours.  All in all it has been a relatively succesful event.

St. John's Group Email G4U Packing time has changed

St. John's Group Email prayer request from Jan Lucas

Please pray for Jan Lucas' daughter Beth and her family as they have become infected with a staph infection.  Beth needs to have surgery today to relieve the pain caused by the staph infection. 

St. John's Group Email Warren County Bookcase Project

I am part of a new organization called the Warren County Bookcase Project.  It is basically a group who has gotten together to fight against illiteracy in our county which is, still today with all of our advancements in technology and ways to learn, a great problem. 
 
 
Each four year old in our county's Head Start Program will receive an all oak bookcase (made by volunteers) with 20-30 children's books in it.  These are all children that otherwise would not have this opportunity or this blessing. 
 
What we are looking for is Bookcase Club Members who will commit to a $50 donation to build one bookcase for one child.  If you make this commitment, you will be invited to a ceremony/awards baquet next Spring at which the children selected will receive their bookcases.
 
Please let me know asap if you are willing to be a Bookcase Club Member or if you would like to help build the bookcases.

DEVOTION: 

For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:17 The South Korean woman's brother had been killed during the 1950-1953 war. Now she, representing her family, has received compensation for his death. The amount which the law has said should come to her is 5,000 won. Won is the currency of Korea. When 5,000 won is translated into U.S. currency, the woman received $4.33. Now, to be fair, the South Korean officials are embarrassed by the amount. They also say there needs to be a new law enacted for such situations. But until that law is proposed, accepted and implemented, $4.33 is the amount placed on a South Korean soldier's life. Let me ask, as you look at your children, at your grandchildren -- what value do you place on them? Certainly, more than $4.33. But how much? What is the price you would place on their lives? What would you do or give to keep them safe. Now if you're wondering why I ask the question, it's because the Heavenly Father asked it of Himself. Taking a look at sinful Adam and Eve, seeing the generations of transgressors that would come after them, He still said, "I shall send My Son into the world -- not as condemnation for these disobedient children, but to give His life so they might be saved." I don't know anyone else who would make that choice the way our Lord did. It doesn't make sense to have the innocent die for the guilty. It's not right for the perfect to be destroyed and the flawed to be kept. It's not right and it's not reasonable. Still that is what our gracious Heavenly Father did, and Jesus followed the plan to the letter. Examine the Gospels and you will be hard-pressed to find any point in His life where Jesus said, "Wait a minute here, folks! This isn't right. How is it I'm supposed to suffer and be beaten and spit on and be crucified for you guys, who can't do two things in a row without messing it up with some kind of sin." You can look for Jesus to say that but, if you do, you won't find it. Scripture says Jesus was about the Father's business, until the time came when He cried from the cross a victorious "It is finished." And it was. As the hymn writer says, "A Lamb goes uncomplaining forth, the guilt of all men bearing; and laden with the sins of earth, none else the burden sharing! Goes patient on, grows weak and faint, to slaughter led without complaint, that spotless life to offer." THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for doing what we would never do, for sending Your perfect Son to save a sinful world -- we shall always be grateful. Keep us ever mindful of His sacrifice. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

STAND DOWN DAY IS THIS SATURDAY

We are having a Stand Down and could use your help to get the information out to the public. The Stand Down will be in Warrenton Missouri at the Holy Rosary Activity Center, located at 716 East Booneslick. If there are veterans that would like to attend, but need transportation, I have drivers available to pick them up. Here's a little information about my Stand Down.

 

Stand Down will be held November 19, 2011 from 6:30am til 4 pm. Hundreds of homeless veterans will be provided a wide range of necessities including:
They will be greeted with respect and open arms

They will be offered breakfast and coffee and fresh fruit

The VA and EDD will assist with registration

Their immediate physical needs will be addressed:
A visit to the clothing tent
Showers
Barbers
Medical
Dental

 

There are the many other services:
Homeless court
Counseling
Veterans benefits
Employment and job counseling services
Recovery providers

Shelters
Chaplains services
12-step meetings for everyone

And last but not least meals prepared by VFW, American Legion, Riders, Community Volunteers and supported by God Cares, Holy Rosary, Missouri Career Center Warrenton, and the American LEgion Post 122.

Perhaps most important of all is the feeling of safety. For the first time in possibly days, weeks or even months our homeless brothers and sisters can leave their possessions in the care of others and rest.

Stand Down is a place of miracles. Lives are changed and lives are saved. The founders of Stand Down had a dream. They made it a reality, one which continues to offer a true stand down for all homeless veterans.

Who organizes and delivers these services?

Thousands of caring volunteers and professionals give their time and expertise to address the unique needs homeless veterans.

I would love for veterans in Warren, Lincoln, Montgomery, and St. Charles County to take advantage of this day. There are not many resources in this area for the hurting, hungry and homeless.

DEVOTION:

Jesus said) "Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion." Luke 10:31-33 Yue Yue (say You-ay) was a little two-year-old girl who lived in China. She was a modern reincarnation of the Lord's parable of the Good Samaritan -- only without the happy ending. Yue Yue was hit by a van in the city of Foshan. The driver of the van stopped, paused, and then drove off, leaving the girl in the road. Surveillance cameras show some bicyclists passing by the injured child, as did another person on a motorcycle and a woman who had her own child. All in all, a dozen people noticed the little girl on the road and passed on by. Yue Yue was eventually brought to safety by a rubbish collector. But that was only after the child had been run over a second time. She died in the hospital some time later. And the end result of the story? Some people in China are scandalized by the unconcern of the passers-by, while others are saying, "The laws make it too dangerous to help someone who has been injured." Scandalized or defensive, the little girl is dead. It is my hope that Christians would not have acted as did the folks in the surveillance tape. It is my prayer that none of us would uncaringly "pass by on the other side," if we saw such a little girl in distress. Why? Because we who had been injured by sin, who were spiritually dying because of our transgressions, have a Savior who stopped to help us. Logically, there was no reason for Him to have done so. There certainly was no reason for Him to sacrifice Himself, His life, His peace, so we who had rejected His Lordship might be made well. No, there was no reason for Him to make such a gracious sacrifice, but that is exactly what happened. And now we who have been forgiven, who have been healed and made whole are occasionally offered the opportunity to do for others as He has done for us. Spiritually, physically we need to try and copy the Savior. We need to help and not pass by. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I had been knocked down by sin, when I was defenseless to help myself, Jesus stopped and did for me what I could not. For His gracious act of saving me, I am grateful. May my gratitude enable me to help others whenever and wherever I can. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

For quite a few years now many of our church members have been participating with other Lutheran Churches and other Christians from our area in coalition with Goodies For You to send care packages to soldiers overseas.  If you would like to help call the church office or just show up at the ARMORY on Saturday.

St. John's Group Email Prayer request from Sandy Robine

Prayer warriors needed!!!!

 

When picking up ALOT of toothbrushes and toothpaste yesterday at Dr. Brady's office (Warrenton north of town) for use in our shower kits, I met an awesome woman, Burket, that was part of his office team.  While I took the time to thank her for their generous donation for the Stand Down Dinner/Day, we got to talking about Jesus.  Well, turns out that her son, who is 9 years old, has been VERY sick with fevers as high as 103.  He had been in Cardinal Glennon but they sent him home telling them that they didn't think it was his appendix according to all the tests they ran.  They don't seem to know just what IS wrong with him and what is causing the fever.   Well, he IS home but still has a fever.  All this medical attention with medical professionals, hospitals and pain and fever is compromised and even worse emotionally on "Rich" (her son's name) because he also has autism.

 

We ended up hugging and she was crying because she is really stressed over all of this.  They actually live in Godfrey, Illinois; but she stayed working for Dr. Brady because she had worked for them for 10 years before they moved their practice to Warrenton.  Also, he understands her concerns as a mother of Rich.  I asked her if we could put her on our prayer list and she was VERY appreciative of that.  She said she sure hadn't planned on crying and telling me all about Rich when I first walked in to get the toothbrushes.  I told her that is most likely why God had "tweaked" my schedule "last Friday" so that I was unable to pick them up then.  He knew Burket would need some extra emotional attention (and prayers & witnessing) on Monday!  You would think I still wouldn't be surprised at how God USES each of us in SO many ways each and every day; but I am.  Watch (and listen) today at how God can use you!  Praise Him for leading us to those that need to hear the Good News and feel God's arms around them through "ours".

 

I just wanted to give you all a little bit of background so you would know about their situation when you pray for Rich and for his mom, Burket.

St. John's Group Email An update from Don Nolte regarding his knee

I was climbing a 6 foot ladder to plug in an extension cord in the ceiling plug and I heard a snap in the back of my knee.  I made it through surgery and am back at home to recuperate.  I have to see the surgeon  this Thursday to have the soft cast and stitches removed.  Being still is not my style and there is so much to do.  Hope is it heals quickly or the restriction by the doctor don't last too long.  I'm feeling fine and the pain so far isn't any greater than before the surgery.

St. John's Group Email updates on prayer requests

Ken Wagner is still at St Joes, St Charles and will probably be there at least a few more days.
 
Ed Kohrs had a stroke and is hospitalized at Lake St Louis.  He is doing well, although it did effect the right side of his body a bit.  After he is stable and strong enough he will probably be moved to Delmar Gardens, Ofallon for rehab.
 
Adam Klott is doing much better and will probably get to go home tomorrow. 
 
Don Nolte's surgery went fine and he is already home from the hospital.
 
 
Anne Hoffmann's daughter, Leslie's surgery went well and she should be going home from the hospital today. 
 
 
No more news to report at this time.

DEVOTION: You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord. Leviticus 19:32

While I am a fairly amiable person by nature, I'm not overly keen on a fellow by the name of Fauja Singh.

In part that is because Singh has just finished running the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. True, his time of 8 hours, 25 minutes, and 16 seconds is hardly the fastest in the world. Indeed, 3,849 runners finished the race before him and only five behind him.

Even so, that doesn't change the fact that Fauja Singh has a special place in my general feeling about marathoners. I've examined why I feel this way and have concluded I'm jealous. I'm jealous because marathoners do something I don't do, can't do and have no desire to do. But, having said that, somehow, and for a reason I cannot explain, feel I ought to try and do.

And if you wonder why Fauja Singh has been singled out for special treatment, I'm glad to tell you. Fauja Singh of Great Britain ran that marathon after he had celebrated his 100th birthday!

Almost as bad, Mr. Singh runs ten miles every day.

Pretty impressive, isn't it? One hundred years old and running marathons. It puts some extra weight behind the words of Leviticus -- the ones above which tell us to "honor the face of an old man." What Singh has done makes honoring him a very logical, reasonable thing to do. He has earned the honor.

But we dare not stop with honoring old men.

The passage continues. It tells us to fear, that is, to respect the Lord. Why?

Because the Lord has earned our respect, our reverence and our worship. Go to Eden. When there was absolutely no reason for the Lord to search out His disobedient children, He did. When He should have condemned them, He made a promise to save them.

Go to Gethsemane. There was no reason for Jesus to carry our sins, our guilt, our condemnation ... but He did. On Calvary there was no reason Jesus should have stayed on that cross and endured the pain and the mocking, but He did.

From the first pages of Scripture to the last we see a Lord who has in wonderful ways, unbelievable ways, earned the worship of His people. It is a worship which should freely, willingly be given by sinners who are washed in the blood of the Lamb.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, it is impossible for me to understand why You have done what You have done. Your love is so much greater, Your compassion so much deeper, Your faithfulness so much more dependable than anything this world can offer. In or out of Your presence may I show my respect and honor. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

We are having a Stand Down and could use your help to get the information out to the public. The Stand Down will be in Warrenton Missouri at the Holy Rosary Activity Center, located at 716 East Booneslick. If there are veterans that would like to attend, but need transportation, I have drivers available to pick them up. Here's a little information about my Stand Down.

 

Stand Down will be held November 19, 2011 from 6:30am til 4 pm. Hundreds of homeless veterans will be provided a wide range of necessities including:
They will be greeted with respect and open arms

They will be offered breakfast and coffee and fresh fruit

The VA and EDD will assist with registration

Their immediate physical needs will be addressed:
A visit to the clothing tent
Showers
Barbers
Medical
Dental

 

There are the many other services:
Homeless court
Counseling
Veterans benefits
Employment and job counseling services
Recovery providers

Shelters
Chaplains services
12-step meetings for everyone

And last but not least meals prepared by VFW, American Legion, Riders, Community Volunteers and supported by God Cares, Holy Rosary, Missouri Career Center Warrenton, and the American LEgion Post 122.

Perhaps most important of all is the feeling of safety. For the first time in possibly days, weeks or even months our homeless brothers and sisters can leave their possessions in the care of others and rest.

Stand Down is a place of miracles. Lives are changed and lives are saved. The founders of Stand Down had a dream. They made it a reality, one which continues to offer a true stand down for all homeless veterans.

Who organizes and delivers these services?

Thousands of caring volunteers and professionals give their time and expertise to address the unique needs homeless veterans.

I would love for veterans in Warren, Lincoln, Montgomery, and St. Charles County to take advantage of this day. There are not many resources in this area for the hurting, hungry and homeless.

Today Jonas spent four hours in the waiting room to get a 10 minute injection of chemo. It was a quick one. Then we went and spent an hour at the proton center. He is starting to show signs of irritation from the radiation that looks like a sunburn across his left cheek and temple, and redenning his left eye somewhat. (Still no vision in that eye, and Dr. Hughes confirmed once more today that it probably will never come back. We have met so many people - with and without cancer- that have only one functioning eye that Jonas is comfortable with the idea now and is adapting quite well.) Our proton specialist says the burn will probably continue to get more uncomfortable and gave him a cream to put on it. She also recommended a special mouthwash as she noticed that his saliva consistency is getting a little thick --something they are watching for. Because of the location of the radiation, they anticipate that he will probably lose some of his salivary gland function and want to keep his mouth from drying out. Saliva is important for digestion, but also for keeping the tongue soft and for protecting the teeth, too. Jonas has already been using a special toothpaste with extra flouride in it to protect his teeth. He has to take super, extra, good care of his teeth because once his mouth and jaw have been treated with proton radiation he will never be able to get braces, root canals, or have any teeth pulled. If he does, it is possible, maybe even likely, that he will lose a portion of his jaw because the radiation is damaging the jawbone's ability to fight future infections or adapt to changes. These things are a small price to pay compared to what regular radiation in Kansas City had to hold for him. Regular radiation would have meant losing his lower left jawbone, all the teeth on his left side, part of his tongue, several saliva glands, part of his left cheek bone, his pituitary gland and most likely brain damage. So this is the comparisson, and why we are here in Texas. Gooooooooooooo Proton!
A big thank you to Amy Alvidrez and Jessica Bobal, two more of Jonas' awesome teachers, for the Crop Against Cancer fundraiser they held at PLMS last weekend. I am told that it was a great success and a good time was had by all! Thanks to the folks at the Scrapbook Boutique in Lee's Summit and the many others who contributed . Making memories. = )
And Jess, thank you for calling up my girls and inviting Blaire to go trick-or-treating with you. That meant a lot to me. And they were such cute princesses, too!
You may remember that last week I mentioned the 'Jack-o-lanterns for Jonas' fundraiser they had at Mason Elementary. Well, the student council put together and sent us a booklet with a picture of each decorated pumkin along with a message from each entrant. So fun! Jonas and I have poured over it and still can't decide which one is our favorite. But he does want to know......which one won??? Thank you Teresa Bryant and Sarah Keller, the StuCo sponsers, for making that happen and for the generous donation. That was all really cool.
Jonas got several care packages this week. Thank you to Mrs. Dahn for his choir shirt, sweatshirt, and bracelet. He is now a full fledged choir Ninja! Thanks to Kelli Jordan, Marta Gillilan, Chris Costman, Susan Murphy. Aunt Lizzie, you rock. And also to all the folks who continue to leave uplifting messages of understanding and encouragement - Mel,Reg, Debi, Wendie, Steve, Donna, Marilyn and all the other message writers-- It makes our life seem less of a trainwreck to be gawked at and more of an interactive communitcation when someone takes the time to acknowledge what was written and blog a bit back at us. Thank you.
Jonas got a special care package this week from none other than Derek Jeter! New York Yankees, baby! He read and reread the letter about 5 times, and still couldn't believe it! Bet you can't guess what was in the bag.......
While out to dinner at a restaurant this week, Jonas also ran into several police officers and Marines who gave him some patches and trading coins like Officer Wiley gave him. After talking for a bit, one of the men was so impressed with him that he GAVE him his Naval and Marine Achievement Medal that he had earned in Iraq. He said that he had signed up for his battle, and Jonas didn't. He commended Jonas for being so brave in the face of something so daunting. He encouraged him to stay strong, keep fighting and beat this thing. Tomorrow is Veteran's Day. Remember those who have served. The selflessness they put out there on the line is unequalled.

Love reading your updates and am amazed at the amount of people praying for Jonas. God couln't be more close to you and bringing so many people into your lives. He is watching over you daily and loves you so much. We will continue our prayers and will continue smiling when we read the positive posts such as this one.
We were watching some home movies from your Dads barb q a few years ago and the kids have all grwon so much. We were laughing at all of them swing the bat at the pinnata, especially Jonas, he ept on swinging till all the pinnata was gone. Miss you all.

Wow, Jonas - you have truly met some wonderful people. Kristin, your stories remind us all of how kind and compassionate people can be - thank you for always reminding us that there are still great people out there!
Sorry I haven't left you any messages for awhile. You are always on my mind and our family prays for you daily! You're proving to everyone what I already knew - that you are a remarkable young man. I am glad that you're able to make some positive memories of your experience in Texas. It's so cool that Derek Jeter sent you a letter and a gift! You definitely have some great gifts to show to all of your friends when you get back in town!

Hey bud- Glad you got the package with your choir stuff in it! As soon as I can, I will e-mail you a video of the concert the other night (if Morales doesn't beat me to it...I have a feeling he will!) I can't wait to see your face back in choir! We miss you! Jonas & Kristen,
So good to hear from you and the update on the treatment. I am so proud of Jonas and the strength he has as he fights this horrible disease. Even though Proton Therapy is causing some permanent damage to Jonas it does sound like a much better alternative to regular radiation treatment. I was so touched by the story of the Marine giving Jonas the Achievement Medal he received from serving in Iraq. What a kind and generous act on his part. He is right though, Jonas did not sign up for his battle! You all are always in my thoughts and prayers. Very cool that Derek Jeter sent Jonas a care package and wrote him a letter. I know that Jonas must truly feel loved and cared for the way so many are reaching out to him, it is so awesome. Thanks for the update and continue to Fight the Fight! We all love you and miss you.

This one brought tears too! Jonas, hang in there. You are such a brave young boy. We miss seeing you out and about next door. Jeff was just asking this morning, on our walk, when I thought you'd be home. Kristen, hope you are doing well. Your girls are so cute. Blaire is so funny. I don't see her or talk to her much - saw her just after getting her ears pierced. I walked over and chatted with her and Brette for a while. Blaire had me cracking up - was so full of drama while telling me things. And Brette, what a great young lady she is. She is so sweet, so polite and seems to be a wonderful big sister to Blaire. Hang in there. You and Jonas are in our thoughts and prayers daily.

I have GOT to stop reading these at school while I have classes in my room. The last THREE posts have made me tear up. Sappy sappy Mrs. Bobal. The medals, the random woman at the store who purchased your duct tape, the note from derek jeter, all of it amazes me. Look at all the people you have touched!! What a platform you have!
Trick or treating was our pleasure. Truly. The girls came over last night for dinner and Kaelyn was in tears over Blaire leaving. So Kaelyn then decided that next time she is going over to your house and all the grown ups are leaving and just she and Brette and Blaire were going to hang out and bake cookies and Kaelyn would bring over her cookie cutters and.... it goes on and on. She just talked Brette's ear off making plans for the future. I'm sure that doesn't surprise you about my little miss chatterbox.
Since I did not respond to a previous post, let me first say, I thought your description of the proton building and how it all works was facinating. The science nerd in me read and reread that. So cool! GO PROTON!!!
Jonas, I'm sorry you are starting to feel the discomfort from the radiation. My momma said that it felt like a perpetual bad sunburn. Hope the cream helps. As Marilyn states, we are so amazed by the things you are induring all while maintaining an positive outlook. You are a hero to many - myself included. I cannot believe the strength you can muster, though it is amazing what people do when they have to. Jonas- you are thought of often. Not a day goes by when someone (teacher, student, etc) doesn't ask me how you are doing. Can't wait to see that smiling face of yours again. xoxo

We missed you at the concert last night. The Black & Gold made their entrance from the back, walking up singing and clapping to the words on the back of the Fight the Fight shirt. They did an awesome job for you! The orchestra dedicated Danny Boy to you and of course it was awesome! Just think how spectacular both groups will be when you rejoin them! Your place is reserved in choir and orchestra and in everyone's heart!
You have so many people praying for you and doing or planning so many things to help you in your fight. I think we should come up with a game called the 6 Degrees of Jonas Borchert. I think you must be 'bout as famous as Kevin Bacon.
Jeffrey misses you like crazy! He's always checking for messages from you on all of his electronic portals.... I wish I could just stick him on a plane and send him your way. Just know that good thoughts and many prayers are flying your way pretty much 24/7.

Jonas...you are so brave....we are in awe of what you are withstanding....BUT...we know the outcome will be favorable .
We foresee your wearing an eye patch, brightly decorated, and starting a whole new fashion trend!
We love and miss your family. I keep intending to make a brisket and bringing to BRette, Blair, and Joel...but have been so busy I never am in the kitchen!
We got some rain here finally but not enough cold weather to bring the sucks and geese onto the lake. They are awaiting your return, too.
Continue to make progress...we await your trip home...

I almost hollered at Cam to tell him about the Derek Jeter package, but then I remembered it is 11:30. Hopefully he's sleeping! His dad already messed up this week on Tuesday - there was no school and he woke him up anyway. I'm not sure Cam's over that yet. The choir/orchestra/band concert was tonight. The choir came in singing and clapping to "your" song and the orchestra dedicated a song to you, too. The only thing better would have been for you to have actually been there! Everybody sounded so great. Just a few more weeks for you in warm Houston - it will be pretty cold by the time you head back up here!
