St. John's Group Email Jonas update

Jonas's Updates

Thursday, at his appointment to be admitted, Dr.Hughes showed us the side by side comparison of the old MRI with the new. And that stinking tumor has diminished significantly! Yay! Those images are just the hardest things to decipher, and I understand why it takes years of schooling to read them. It's like looking at a negative of a photo.Everything is shades of black and white: bones, cartilage, soft tissue, canals, sinus pockets, etc, etc. As a layperson, I have never been able to see exactly what tumor's perameters are or how many tendrils it has, or what it actually looks like (which is very frustrating to me). The only thing I have been able to make out is asymmetry: like when there should be two eyeballs, two nasal canals, two maxillary sinuses, and two of each of the other sinuses-, sometimes there was an obvious shadowing over one of the sides making it obvious there was a mass in the way. Well, this time, we almost didn't need a side by side comparison! It looked like almost everything was perfectly symmetrical! i couldn't really tell how much it had receded but the doctor said that they were very pleased and called it substantial. No doubt about it. The poison is working! Science isn't perfect, and we are no where out of the woods yet, but I am so grateful for all the strides they are making in cancer research. Trial and error. Working up new and more successfully proven protocol. Forty years ago cancer was a death sentence for children, but every year more children survive and are living longer and longer. Trust me, no one would put their child through this if there was something better out there proven to work. No one.
Jonas also told the doctor he noticed that they also did a spinal scan and wanted to know why. Dr. Hughes said that, yes it was true, they had. They did it because there was some indication that one of the tentacles showed some play at the skull base and he wanted to make sure it hadn't gotten to the spinal column....and he was pleased to say that it had not. So more good news all around. After our discussion, Jonas was so very pleased to be admitted for more chemo. "Bring it on!" he said. = )

St. John's Group Email 3 Prayer requests

1.  Please pray for Roger Boeger as he is back in the hospital (St joes Lk StL) with chest pains.

2.  For Lil Winter whose surgery has been moved up to next Friday, Oct 21.

3.  For Our Redeemer Lutheran church in KC and Pastor Brad Zerkel as gangs broke into their church, stole thousands of dollars worth of stuff, spray painted grafiti all over, and destroyed much of their property (The sanctuary was left alone.)

St. John's Group Email prayer request from Lynn Russell

I would appreciate prayers for my "other daughter" Amanda.  Everyone's prayers brought her through stage 4 colon cancer but now the cancer has returned to the ducts in the liver.  We were preparing our goodbyes but last night another miracle occurred with her.  A doctor in Savannah Georgia has cleared an appointment for her using a cyber knife.  He is going to attempt to remove the tumors without using invasive surgery.

Her doctors in Tennessee wanted to put her in hospice because she is too weak for any further chemo or surgery and they had given up on her.

Please pray for her and her girls who are coming to stay with my daughter for the next week or so until their mom stabilizes, and for all of us who love her.

Thank you

Lynn

St. John's Group Email Monday, October 10, 2011

DEVOTION:  Hebrews 10:24-25  "And let us consider how to stir one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

I was talking to my mom the other day, and she was telling me about how her church's worship attendance has taken a dramatic downturn in the last three years.  They were meeting together to try and figure out what to do about it.  I was talking with my fellow pastors in the St. Charles area a few weeks ago and we were talking about the same thing.  Yesterday, after we saw how few people were in church yesterday, we began to talk about it again with the people who met for Bible class.

Worship attendance and the neglecting of meeting together is not a new problem.  It was already an issue back at the time of Paul, just thirty years or so after Jesus died, rose and ascended.  When Paul said, "not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some..." he was lamenting the fact that some have already quit coming to church.  (They wouldn't have called it "church" yet, but you get the idea.)

But does Paul turn it all into a negative thing and a judgmental thing?  NO!  He urges the hearers and readers of his letter to encourage one another and consider how to stir one another up to love and good works.

Truth is, no one wants to be around a bunch of negative people.  No one wants to go to a place where there is going to be a bunch of folks who are angry with each other and are grumbling at the world around them.  You know, people who never smile.

People want to go to a positive place where forgiveness abounds, where people are spurred on to love and good works, where we are constantly encourgaing one another, and where we treat each other as equals under the cross!  They want to go to a place where there is peace and hope, a place where they teach about the LOVE of Christ and His FORGIVENESS and where people live it out in their lives and attitudes.

Unfortunately many of our Christian churches throughout the world have become such places.  THIS CANNOT CONTINUE TO BE.

I urge you to forgive whatever grievances you have with one another "and all the more as you see the DAY approaching".   Time is short!  Jesus is coming soon!

Let us do as Paul says!  Encourage one another!  Stir one another up!  Give each other love instead of criticism.  Listen instead of talk.  Treat others as you wish to be treated.  Love one another so that the body of Christ may be built up!

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to be positive in al things.  Help me to share your love always.  And if I have been neglecting the meeting of the saints in worship and fellowship, help me to get back to where I should be!  Amen.

St. John's Group Email A good GRACE story from Sept 11, 2001

This is a little bit longer video than usual, but is well worth the time.  Please watch it to the end.

St. John's Group Email A thought for your day

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY FROM YOUR ST. JOHN'S BOARD OF EVANGELISM & OUTREACH...
May God's Holy Spirit allow you to see, clearly, the good things in others!   His Peace to ALL of you.

"The Window from which we look"

A young couple moves into a new neighborhood. The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside.

"That laundry is not very clean", she said.  "She doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap."

Her husband looked on, but remained silent.  Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments. About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband:

"Look, she has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this."

The husband said, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows."

And so it is with life. What we see when watching others depends on the purity of the window through which we look.

Jonas's Updates

Friday, October 7

Posted 22 hours ago
I had hoped that when I started this next update that I would be journaling about the results of Jonas' MRI, but that is not the case. On Wednesday, Joel flew into town and took Jonas to his doctor's appointment Thursday morning. Before they were able to discuss the MRI results, he had blood drawn (as ususal) to be lab tested for numerous things. It turned out that he was extremely neutropenic. They admitted him to the hospital right away and the focus quickly turned to getting him back to good health. He ended up having three transfusions of blood and one transfusion of platelets before being checked out of the hospital this evening around 5pm.
Thank goodness he rebounded so quickly because his sisters drove down to Houston today to spend the weekend with him before he begins his proton therapy next week. It's a 14 hour drive from Kansas City to Houston. Whew. It made me kind of nervous for them to make that trip all in one shot. Luckily, my mother's sister and her husband, Aunt Sandie and Uncle Jack, live at about the halfway mark, in Tulsa Oklahoma, and were so wonderful to let them stay for the night. They left Kansas City yesterday afternoon and arrived in Houston around 2pm today. Thank you so much, Sandie and Jack! Brette said they got about a half an hour out of town and Blaire cried because she wanted to stay longer with you. She was only pacified when reminded that she was on her way to see her mother.... .whom she hasn't seen for a month and a half. Lol.
Anyway, we are headed to the beach again tomorrow. Jonas wants the girls to see Galveston. Then on Monday he gets readmitted for five days of chemo before he begins his radiation.
Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the Fish Fry! Debi, Mark and Riley Hartley and all the folks at of the Lake Lotawana Optimist Club. Thank you! I heard that the fish was delicious and that the turnout was fantastic. I wish we could have been there.
The Sonic fundraiser has been cancelled or possibly postponed. The next fundraisers are the Paint-Your-Own-Pottery on October 14th and the Fight the Fight on the Fairway Golf tourney on October 15th.
I will keep you posted as soon as Dr. Hughes gives us a full report about the MRI results. His one brief comment as Jonas was being admitted is that we will be pleased with the images, that they show that the treatment is making progress.
Blaire is going to bed tonight curled up in bed between her mom and dad, with Brette and Jonas chattering away in the dark sharing the fold-out couch across the room. Ah. Life is good.

St. John's Group Email Update on Ruth Cantrell

Below is an update on Ruth Cantrell from her husband Floyd:

Friends and Family

We finally got all the test results back today and know the reason for the nausea and vomiting  Her cancer is metastasizing at a fast rate and she now has many tumors around her brain, most small but a few are noticeable in size.  This has all changed since the MRI in Aug.   They are trying to calm the tumor down with steroids to help with nausea so she can eat.  She will start a general round of Radiation Friday to help reduce the size of the cancers causing her to be nausea.  We need a real big miracle, so keep those prayers going strong.

St. John's Group Email Wednesday, October 5, 2011

DEVOTION:  But Peter and John answered them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard." Acts 4:19-20

Did I miss something?

It seems I remember how the media spent days reporting the sad antics of a Christian pastor that was going to burn the Koran.

And I also remember how they endlessly shared the story of a splinter Christian group who made an unacceptable scene at the burial of American soldiers killed overseas.

And I can recall how, when a Christian youth pastor burned phonograph records and CDs, which contained immoral lyrics, the story was carried from coast to coast.

Which is why I expected to see similar press given when the organization called Backyard Skeptics promised to tear apart copies of Bible verses they felt were immoral. According to the leader of the atheist group, the event which took place at Huntington Beach Pier in California was not designed to be offensive. They were only going to tear up copies of pages of the Bible.

That was the promise.

According to those who were there, the leader, playing to the cameras, went beyond tearing up copies of Scripture, he actually ripped a few pages out of a Bible as he made his closing statements to the crowd.

Yes, I expected to see that story being flashed over the TV and the Internet. I was sure the idea of someone tearing apart a book, especially the Bible, would be universally condemned. After all, if I took an immoral novel and tore it apart or condemned a pornographic website, I know many voices would be raised to criticize my narrow-mindedness.

So, why didn't I hear anything about this event? Two possibilities suggest themselves:

Possibility number one: I missed all the reports.

Possibility number two: The media loves to condemn and criticize Christians who take a stand more than it does atheists who do the same.

Centuries ago, Peter and John found that the religious institution and not the media wanted them to keep quiet and stop their proclamation of the crucified and risen Savior. When they were told to shut up and sit down, they replied, "We cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard."

In our age when the foibles and failings of Christians are reported with greater enthusiasm than our witness, the apostle's reply still seems valid. Denominations, congregations and individuals all ought to confess: "We cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard."

And what we have seen and heard is Jesus Christ -- crucified and risen.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the Savior came into this world to seek and save sinners. When He ascended, He asked me to tell His story with the lost. In spite of prejudice and persecution, help me -- like the apostles -- to speak of what we have heard and seen. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.
