Subject: St. John's Group Email FW: POW/MIA Recognition Day: from Robyn McNew
This was forwarded to me from Robyn McNew today, and I thought it was important enough to share with everyone. peace be with you all!
83,581.
According to the U.S. Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office, that's the number of Americans who fought and defended their nation in World War II, Korea, the Cold War, and Vietnam who remain unaccounted for. How do we remember them? By taking time to reflect on their sacrifice.
In honor of the national POW/MIA Recognition Day that is observed tomorrow, Sept. 16, I'd like to focus on a single story of enduring courage and selflessness.
U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Robinson "Robbie" Risner had plenty of combat experience under his belt when he arrived in Vietnam. But his life changed dramatically on Sept. 16, 1965. While flying his F-105D Thunderchief fighter-bomber on a mission over North Vietnam, Risner was shot down, captured and taken to Hoa Lo Prison, otherwise known as the "Hanoi Hilton."
As we have learned since the Vietnam War ended, POWs were subjected to cruel, inhumane treatment and torture. Here's how Risner described one of those experiences:
"During the night, I heard someone screaming in a distance. And I thought, man, they are torturing another prisoner. I felt so sorry for him, you know. And then I would come back more closely to consciousness and found that it was me I was hearing in the distance. I was the one that was doing the screaming. And they tortured me all night."
While most of us can't imagine what that was like or how a human being can survive such conditions, Risner and his men found a way. They communicated to one another by tapping on the prison walls and frequently paid the price when they were caught. When Risner and his companions held an unauthorized church service in their prison cell, guards escorted them to solitary confinement. While they were walking out, the men of Camp Unity, as it later became known, sang "The Star Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America." Risner was later quoted as saying that he felt nine feet tall during those moments. After serving seven years as a POW, Robbie Risner was released on Feb. 12, 1973, and returned with honor to the United States as part of Operation Homecoming.
Will you join me tomorrow in offering a moment of silence for those 83,581 who are still lost, but not forgotten?

Sometimes nations, sometimes countries, sometimes churches, sometimes people think too small.
That is a criticism which cannot be leveled against Domino's Pizza.
You see Domino's has employed a construction firm, Maeda Corporation, to figure out what it will cost to put a Domino's pizza place on the moon. Yes, you heard that right: on the moon.
Maeda has come up with an estimate of $14 billion. Most of that money will go to the purchase of 15 rockets which will deliver 70 tons of building material and pizza-making equipment to earth's satellite. Domino's thinks it can cut some costs by using the moon's native mineral deposits to make the concrete for its two-story restaurant.
Just about the only thing Domino's hasn't figured out is when this giant venture will begin.
Nobody can accuse Domino's of thinking too small.
And nobody can accuse the Lord of small thinking either.
Imagine yourself standing with Jesus near the Mount of Ascension. You have seen Him do many miracles. You have seen Him rise from the dead. He has done spectacular things to bring about the salvation of sinful humankind.
Now, shortly before He is going to leave you He says, "Fellows, you know I had to suffer, die and rise. That's been done. Now I want you to tell people to repent of their sins and receive the forgiveness I have won. Oh, one more thing, I'd like you to start here in Jerusalem and take that Good News to every nation in the entire world."
That's a pretty tall order for a handful of fishermen and friends.
Still, it is the way God works. When Jesus came to this world, He came to carry the sins of everyone. When He died, He died to save everyone, and now He wants everyone to know they can be saved.
Thinking big. That's the way God thinks. I pray we think big as well.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, forgive the times I have been timid and terrified; erase the days my witness has been half-hearted or not at all. Instead, empower me with the Good News of great joy -- the news the world, quite literally, is dying to hear: we have a Savior and there is life eternal for all who believe. In Jesus' Name, I pray it. Amen.

"So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. Genesis 45:8 You'll let them save face! Joseph's brothers listen in amazement as he says, '...it was not you that sent me hither, but God...' Is he serious? 'God did it?' This takes forgiveness to a new level! Saving face - that's what God lets us do! With full knowledge of our sinful past and our present struggles, He covers us with grace, and He expects us to do the same for others. You can make a friend for life by allowing someone to save face. Reading the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew, Chapter 1, you might think the sin of adultery between David and Bathsheba was part of the divine strategy all along. Of course it wasn't, and David paid a high price. Yet Matthew records these events as though they were supposed to have happened in just that way. For the one who really forgives from the heart, there's no place for self-righteousness. We're able to forgive because a) we remember what we ourselves have been forgiven of b) we acknowledge what we're capable of c) we see God's hand at work in the bigger picture d) when we come through it we're wiser, stronger and more Christ-like. So Joseph wasn't being condescending or patronizing; nor was he thinking, 'I'll be admired for being so gracious.' No, during his years in prison God had operated on his heart and changed his attitude. So when he said, '...you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good...' (Genesis 50:20), Joseph did mean it. That is real forgiveness! Prayer |

| And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 Here's a quiz. It's an easy one. True or False: You remember where you were when the jets flew into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center? ___ True ___ False True or False: You said a prayer for all the people who were trapped, for those whose loved ones had died, and for those who were involved in the clean-up? ___ True ___ False True or False: You were shocked at the extent that terrorists hated innocent strangers? ___ True ___ False True or False: You believe clergy should have been able to participate in the 10th Anniversary Memorial Service? ___ True ___ False So, did you answer true to all of the questions? How about that last one? Did that cause some hesitation? Me, I was torn by that question. Now I could answer true if I were allowed to pick the clergy who would be participating, and if I could provide the guidelines defining what they would say, and if I had the authority to review the content of their messages and prayers. Of course, nobody asked me to do those things. And quite frankly, I'm not overly eager to see a parade of preachers get up on the stage, stand before the microphones, and promote their own deity. Even worse, I don't think America needs to hear a bunch of clergy implying that all gods are the same, and all faiths are the same, all beliefs are the same, all heavens are the same. They're not all the same. The apostle Peter was right when he boldly declared to an international audience: "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." How could Jesus' prime spokesman do any differently? Jesus had been pretty clear when He said ... "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6b). No matter how you work at it, Jesus doesn't give much in the way of "wiggle room." In fact, Jesus doesn't give any wiggle room. Jesus alone can save and Jesus alone can provide hope. That is the message I would have been eager to hear at Ground Zero. It is the message God's people will continue to share to a world that is constantly reminded that life is filled with hatred and heroism, death and deliverance. And only Jesus can make a difference. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, no other faith can say that God's Son has come to rescue sinful humanity. Since I believe that Jesus has done that for me and all the world, may I be equally bold in sharing the Christ's story with sinful and lost humankind. In my Savior's Name I pray it. Amen. |

St. John's Group Email Lil Winter's surgery has been moved up to Monday, Sept 12
St. John's Group Email Agape needs your help!!
We are trying to put together a "cleaning day" at our thrift store on Armory Road in Warrenton. It is an 8,000 square foot facility, and it is in need of a deep cleaning.
Our thrift store contributes substantially to our mission, raising an average $500 a day. In these difficult economic times, when donations, grants and government contracts are all down, proceeds from our thrift store has been our lifeline. I do not need to tell you that increasing numbers of people have less discretionary income to donate to a good cause, and more need than ever to turn to a food pantry for help.
To maintain an orderly, clean facility, our thrift store must undergo a deep cleaning a couple of times each year. This is a task that takes quite a few strong backs. We do not have enough regular volunteers to complete the job in one day, and many of them are elderly and cannot perform the necessary tasks.
We need teams of 2-6 people to perform the following tasks:
· Move fixtures and clean under and around them
· Empty fixtures and wipe them down
· Empty shelves and wipe down the shelves
· Working under the direction of a supervisor, rearrange some spaces in the store
We estimate we will work no longer than 6 hours – assuming we get enough volunteers. We can close the store early on a Friday and work later afternoon/evening, or we can work on a Sunday afternoon.
Specifically, we are looking for the following:
· 6 people, at least 2 of whom are adults, to move fixtures loaded with hanging clothes. We need to move the fixtures to clean under and around them.
· 4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Housewares department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
· 4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Linen/Craft department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
· 4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Books department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
· 4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Toys department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
· 2 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Men's department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
This is a great opportunity for a youth group, mission group or men's/ladies' club. If you have people willing to help us, please have someone representing the group contact me in one of these ways:
By email: dir.agapemin@centuryetl.net
By phone: 636-456-4645, Mon-Fri, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
By letter: Kathleen Purcell, 713 Powell St, Warrenton, MO 63383
We would like to get started on this as soon as possible. If your group contacts me by email or letter, please ask them to include the following:
· Contact name
· Contact phone number
· Contact email
· Number of people they are bringing
· Their preferred day to work (Friday night or Sunday afternoon)
This will not be a safe environment for children, so please, no workers younger than 12. All volunteers should have good eyesight and be able to lift at least 10 pounds comfortably, for their own safety.
Thank you for any help you can give us. I thank God for the support we receive from Warren County churches. It is truly a blessing.
Regards,
Kathleen Purcell
