Real Forgiveness – Part 5

"So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. Genesis 45:8

You'll let them save face! Joseph's brothers listen in amazement as he says, '...it was not you that sent me hither, but God...' Is he serious? 'God did it?' This takes forgiveness to a new level! Saving face - that's what God lets us do! With full knowledge of our sinful past and our present struggles, He covers us with grace, and He expects us to do the same for others. You can make a friend for life by allowing someone to save face.

Reading the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew, Chapter 1, you might think the sin of adultery between David and Bathsheba was part of the divine strategy all along. Of course it wasn't, and David paid a high price. Yet Matthew records these events as though they were supposed to have happened in just that way.

For the one who really forgives from the heart, there's no place for self-righteousness. We're able to forgive because a) we remember what we ourselves have been forgiven of b) we acknowledge what we're capable of c) we see God's hand at work in the bigger picture d) when we come through it we're wiser, stronger and more Christ-like. So Joseph wasn't being condescending or patronizing; nor was he thinking, 'I'll be admired for being so gracious.' No, during his years in prison God had operated on his heart and changed his attitude. So when he said, '...you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good...' (Genesis 50:20), Joseph did mean it. That is real forgiveness!

Prayer
Heavenly father, help me to help those I forgive to save face – because you do that for me every day! In Jesus' Name, Amen

DEVOTION:

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12

Here's a quiz. It's an easy one.

True or False: You remember where you were when the jets flew into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center? ___ True ___ False

True or False: You said a prayer for all the people who were trapped, for those whose loved ones had died, and for those who were involved in the clean-up? ___ True ___ False

True or False: You were shocked at the extent that terrorists hated innocent strangers? ___ True ___ False

True or False: You believe clergy should have been able to participate in the 10th Anniversary Memorial Service? ___ True ___ False

So, did you answer true to all of the questions? How about that last one? Did that cause some hesitation? Me, I was torn by that question. Now I could answer true if I were allowed to pick the clergy who would be participating, and if I could provide the guidelines defining what they would say, and if I had the authority to review the content of their messages and prayers.

Of course, nobody asked me to do those things.

And quite frankly, I'm not overly eager to see a parade of preachers get up on the stage, stand before the microphones, and promote their own deity. Even worse, I don't think America needs to hear a bunch of clergy implying that all gods are the same, and all faiths are the same, all beliefs are the same, all heavens are the same.

They're not all the same.

The apostle Peter was right when he boldly declared to an international audience: "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

How could Jesus' prime spokesman do any differently? Jesus had been pretty clear when He said ... "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6b). No matter how you work at it, Jesus doesn't give much in the way of "wiggle room."

In fact, Jesus doesn't give any wiggle room.

Jesus alone can save and Jesus alone can provide hope. That is the message I would have been eager to hear at Ground Zero. It is the message God's people will continue to share to a world that is constantly reminded that life is filled with hatred and heroism, death and deliverance.

And only Jesus can make a difference.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, no other faith can say that God's Son has come to rescue sinful humanity. Since I believe that Jesus has done that for me and all the world, may I be equally bold in sharing the Christ's story with sinful and lost humankind. In my Savior's Name I pray it. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Lil Winter's surgery has been moved up to Monday, Sept 12

Lil Winter wanted everyone to know that her surgery has been moved up a month to this coming Monday, Sept 12 at 8am.  She is very thankful for this!  Pray a prayer of thanksgiving and for safety and security before and during the surgery.

St. John's Group Email Agape needs your help!!

Below is a note from Kathy Purcell at Agape Ministries.  Please contact Agape to let her know you can help.  456-4645

We are trying to put together a "cleaning day" at our thrift store on Armory Road in Warrenton. It is an 8,000 square foot facility, and it is in need of a deep cleaning.

Our thrift store contributes substantially to our mission, raising an average $500 a day. In these difficult economic  times, when donations, grants and government contracts are all down, proceeds from our thrift store has been our lifeline. I do not need to tell you that increasing numbers of people have less discretionary income to donate to a good cause, and more need than ever to turn to a food pantry for help.

To maintain an orderly, clean facility, our thrift store must undergo a deep cleaning a couple of times each year. This is a task that takes quite a few strong backs. We do not have enough regular volunteers to complete the job in one day, and many of them are elderly and cannot perform the necessary tasks.

We need teams of 2-6 people to perform the following tasks:

·         Move fixtures and clean under and around them

·         Empty fixtures and wipe them down

·         Empty shelves and wipe down the shelves

·         Working under the direction of a supervisor, rearrange some spaces in the store

We estimate we will work no longer than 6 hours – assuming we get enough volunteers. We can close the store early on a Friday and work later afternoon/evening, or we can work on a Sunday afternoon.

Specifically, we are looking for the following:

·         6 people, at least 2 of whom are adults, to move fixtures loaded with hanging clothes. We need to move the fixtures to clean under and around them.

·         4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Housewares department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.

·         4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Linen/Craft department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.

DEVOTION:     Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." And He laid His hands on them and went away. Matthew 19:14-15

Many thanks to retired military man John Perkowski (LTC Retired) for sharing the idea and background research for this Daily Devotion.

Abdul Samad is a 10-year-old boy who lives in Pakistan.

If the old poem is right and if Samad's life was normal, at the age of 10 he should be made of "frogs and snails and puppy dog tails." But in Samad's case, the poem isn't right, and his life has hardly been normal.

Last May Samad was kidnapped by militants in Quetta, a provincial capital in Pakistan. His kidnappers whisked him away from the life he had known, transported him across the border and there they gave him an education: an intense education.

After his kidnappers were convinced Samad was ready, they returned him to his native land with explosives strapped to his body and a target he was supposed to destroy.

Samad was arrested by authorities before he was able to complete his mission.

Others have not been so lucky. On May 1st, four civilians were killed and 12 were injured by a 12-year-old boy who blew himself up in a crowded market.

Pakistan's Ministry of Interior Affairs has condemned the practice of making children suicide bombers as "unforgivable, shameful, un-Islamic, and inhumane." To that all of us would agree.

As I thought about the real-life story of Abdul Samad, I began to wonder what do you say to a 10-year-old little boy to make him a suicide bomber? Do you threaten his family? Do you tell him he will be a hero? Do you promise him a martyr's entry into the heaven of Islam? Do you convince him that you and your terrorist pals are his only friends?

What do you say?

I know what I would like to say to Abdul Samad. I would like to let him know there is another way, a better way than the path these men want him to walk. That way is the path of the Savior -- a Savior who loved him so much He willingly gave His life so Abdul will never die.

I think life can have no greater joy than to let Abdul Samad and all of the world's children know that in Jesus they have a Redeemer who doesn't want them to hate or commit suicide. No, Jesus wants them to love as they have been loved -- and He wants them to live forever with Him in paradise.

This, I guess, is one of the reasons Lutheran Hour Ministries has all those offices around the world. Somebody has to let the Abduls of the world know about Jesus.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for my faith, my Savior, I give thanks. Now may I do what I can to let the lost of this world know You love them and wish to bless them. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:   (Our answer is from From Pat King who is our new champion!)
Zadok was a Klingon warrior, who, in a fit of testosterone bravado, decided to attack a Romulan warbird, was defeated – and killed – by the Romulan Tek'Tok in the Neutral Zone. Stardate 26927.

Oh, you meant the other Zadok? Well, he was the Zadok (Hebrew: Tzadok צדוק, meaning "Righteous"), who was a priest of descended from Eleazar the son of Aaron, who aided King David during the revolt of his son Absolom, and was consequently instrumental in bringing King Solomon to throne. After Solomon's building of The First Temple in Jerusalem, Zadok was the first High Priest to serve there.

DEVOTION:     If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

On May 29th Sarah Marie Stebbins died when her car hit a guardrail.

A few months later Stebbins' mother, Valerie, received a bill for $640.71 from the State of Maryland. The bill asked Sarah to pay for the guardrail she had damaged and threatened to charge 17 percent interest on any money left unpaid.

Valerie broke down in tears.

Now this is where things get interesting.

The story was reported to Maryland's State Highway Administration. And do you know what happened next?

I'll tell you because, quite honestly, you would never be able to guess. What happened was this: the State Highway Administration said the bill was an "inexcusable" error. Next, they rescinded the bill and then they promised the situation would never happen again. Indeed, a spokesman for Maryland's Highway Administration, Charlie Gischlar, said, "We are going to triple- and quadruple-check before anything goes out."

Amazing! They didn't try to intimidate anybody; they didn't try to cover things up; they didn't play any games; they didn't make any threats; they confessed they had done something wrong.

In response to something gone very wrong, they simply did the right thing: a very Christian thing.

They did what the apostle John encouraged God's people to do: they confessed their sins.

Indeed, we who have been redeemed by the Savior ought to honestly and regulary say, "Dear Savior, I'm sorry for what I have done wrong and from now on, with the Holy Spirit's power and Your ongoing presence, I will try to do better. May all of my life be a thanksgiving for Your great sacrifice made for me."

In fact, that is our prayer:

THE PRAYER: Dear Savior, I'm sorry for what I have done wrong and from now on, with the Holy Spirit's power and Your ongoing presence, I will try to do better. May all of my life be a thanksgiving for Your great sacrifice made for me. In Your Name I pray it. Amen.
