We are trying to put together a "cleaning day" at our thrift store on Armory Road in Warrenton. It is an 8,000 square foot facility, and it is in need of a deep cleaning.
Our thrift store contributes substantially to our mission, raising an average $500 a day. In these difficult economic times, when donations, grants and government contracts are all down, proceeds from our thrift store has been our lifeline. I do not need to tell you that increasing numbers of people have less discretionary income to donate to a good cause, and more need than ever to turn to a food pantry for help.
To maintain an orderly, clean facility, our thrift store must undergo a deep cleaning a couple of times each year. This is a task that takes quite a few strong backs. We do not have enough regular volunteers to complete the job in one day, and many of them are elderly and cannot perform the necessary tasks.
We need teams of 2-6 people to perform the following tasks:
· Move fixtures and clean under and around them
· Empty fixtures and wipe them down
· Empty shelves and wipe down the shelves
· Working under the direction of a supervisor, rearrange some spaces in the store
We estimate we will work no longer than 6 hours – assuming we get enough volunteers. We can close the store early on a Friday and work later afternoon/evening, or we can work on a Sunday afternoon.
Specifically, we are looking for the following:
· 6 people, at least 2 of whom are adults, to move fixtures loaded with hanging clothes. We need to move the fixtures to clean under and around them.
· 4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Housewares department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
· 4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Linen/Craft department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
· 4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Books department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
· 4 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Toys department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
· 2 people, including at least 1 adult, to clean the Men's department. This includes emptying the shelves to wipe them down.
This is a great opportunity for a youth group, mission group or men's/ladies' club. If you have people willing to help us, please have someone representing the group contact me in one of these ways:

This will not be a safe environment for children, so please, no workers younger than 12. All volunteers should have good eyesight and be able to lift at least 10 pounds comfortably, for their own safety.

I can remember when Ronald McDonald used to chase the Hamburgler who was trying to steal French fries. Recent commercials show Ronald playing bongos and the Hamburgler ... well, he has simply disappeared -- or maybe he was tried, convicted and is serving time in some fast-food jail. If that isn't bad enough, now I've been told Burger King is dead. No, the restaurant lives on. It's that mascot-like character with the oversize plastic mask that has gone the way of all flesh. It's true. From now on the commercials of the hamburger joint are going to feature food and not the Burger King. Quite frankly, I'm a little bit glad. That guy creeped me out ... just a little. When asked for a reason, one of Burger King's senior vice-presidents said, "Our consumers tell us they love our great-tasting, high-quality food, and that's exactly what we're featuring in our new marketing and advertising." Once again the words of St. Paul have proven to be true: the old is gone; the new has come. Of course, we both know that St. Paul wasn't referring to the mascots of burger franchises when he wrote those words. He was talking about us. He wanted us to realize that when Jesus enters a person's heart that individual is transformed. The sins, the worries, the evil, the helplessness and hopelessness of the past are ... well, they are past. Because of the forgiveness Jesus has won for us, we have become new. No, we don't always feel new and we don't always feel changed. But that is our shortcoming, not the Lord's. Every day He holds out to us potentials and possibilities. He promises strength to proceed with our days and courage to face what that day will bring. Even more, there is forgiveness for our failings and a vision of an unmarred eternity in heaven. In us the old has gone and the new has come, and for that we give thanks in prayer. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, once I was in darkness, once I was lost, once I was condemned. Now, because of the sacrifice made by the crucified and risen Savior, I have been transformed. No longer do sin, death and devil have hold on me. I am a new creature: a creation of Your grace. May I realize, remember and live accordingly. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen. |

Jonas's counts are through the roof!
That means he is healthy and feeling fine.
He got his chemo and we will be on the road tonight headed to Texas!
There is an Arbonne/Scentsy party tonight that I had planned to go to. I'm sorry, I won't be there. Thank you to Amy Brockelmeyer and Jessica Vandenbos who are donating 100% of their commissions to support Jonas! I had really looked forward to a visit with all my girlfriends before we headed out of town, but that is just not in the cards. If you or anyone you know needs to purchase gifts for the upcoming holiday, this is a great opportunity! There is a FB event set up on the Fight the Fight, Jonas Borchert page.
PS. The first thing Jonas does when he comes home from the hospital is to switch on the Scensy warmer next to his bed. Love it!

Debi Hartley, Christine Laird, and Jessica Bobal, Susan Murphy and Brette, thank you for helping me get Jonas through his Sub-Q shots. Jonas gets an injection in his leg every evening. We have to do it here at home. I think I should have been having someone witness them each time! Jessica, special thanks for helping him Man-up and calm down. Soooooooooo much easier now.
Thank you to Doug and Christine Laird who are flying Joel back from Houston with their frequent-flyer miles! What a relief! Now I can have a vehicle down there. Not that I know where anything is, but it will be invaluable to have our own transportation. And speaking of transportation -- Susan, Karen and Bill, again, thanks for the use of the wheel chair!

So we are Texas-bound! I wonder if we will come back with thick southern accents? I will post to ya'll again once we get there to let you know we had a safe journey. If we run a little late, its only because we couldn't contain our passion for Roadside Oddities!
