Bring your own meat to grill, a side to share, and your own favorite beverage (alcoholic beverages are ok). We will have a small devotion and prayer time, a very short presentation on the men's retreat coming up in Sept, and the rest of the time will be for our relaxation and enjoyment of the evening.
The high school has their first game tonight as well, so a few of us might want to walk over to the high school to watch the game.
Jonas is home from the hospital today and I'm sorry I didn't get that updated sooner! My apologies to Officer Wiley, the PLMS DARE officer, and to the Jordans, and anyone else -- who came to visit Jonas in down at Children's Mercy. Although Jonas' chemo schedule is one week on, one week off - every other chemo cycle alternates. For example the first, third and fifth cycles are the same and the second, fourth and sixth cycles are the same. I did not remember this and told everyone he would be in the hospital for five days, like last time. In actuality, he had two days of chemo treatments and will get one more later in the week by outpatient. Then, he will have a full week off. All this assuming that he does not go into the hospital for fever, infection, or some other debilitation. So far he is doing fine. This is the round that seems to kick his butt with mouth sores and vomiting. Right now, he is not really doing either, but feels like mud. He is looking forward to visiting with friends later in the week, but right now says, "No thanks" to company. Karen Atkins tells me that people have donated over 24 cases of formula! Thank you to everyone who is helping with this. We have enough to get us through an entire visit to Houston now. Jonas has been eating quite a bit these last few weeks. He is back up to 94 pounds again. While this is good news, he still needs help putting on weight through the formula, because two steps forward and one step back will just not cut it when we have 30 some weeks of chemo ahead. You all are helping to keep him strong and well-nutritioned. We are pretty-well stocked for now. Jonas has really been missing his dogs. The Burrow Family was so wonderful to let us stop by to visit with them on Monday morning on our way to the hospital. Their dogs are beautiful and so sweet. Our dogs are one black and one gold and theirs are one black and one gold as well!! It was just so cute to see them as a group. They look like they all belong together: color coordinated, so sweet and happy. Just as soon as we are gone to Texas they can come home. That won't keep Jonas from missing them, but it will let the Burrows get back to a normal dog-human ratio in their home. You guys rock. = ) Officer Mark Wiley came by our house today after making his attemp downtown at the hospital (Ooooo.. again, I'm so sorry). He brought Jonas a special plaque the LS Police, and specifically the DARE unit, had made up for Jonas. It was a to commemorate his strength of spirit and courage in his battle against cancer. He also gave him two special coins, one from both the LS police force and one from the DARE unit, that he can keep in his pocket as touch-stones to remind him that he has entire force of brave men on his side, standing beside him, encouraging him to stay strong. Jonas was so honored. He tried to participate in the Junior Police Academy this summer, but we missed the deadline.... and got cancer instead. This was something that meant a lot to him. Thank you Officer Wiley for seeing that, and to the LS Police for reaching out to him this way. He has the coins in his pocket right now. Thanks to all the folks bringing us meals. Donna, Amber, Nikki. Jessica. .... Delish! Paul Morales, Just a great big, Thank You!!! Christine Laird- big thanks to you as well! Susan Murphy--thank you for the duckling therapy. Lol For now, no visitors. But I will keep you posted as to when he would like some company. I know I am forgetting something. Much love to you all. Joseph Schexnider has been found.
May I tell you his story? In 1984, Joseph Schexnider had been charged with having the possession of a stolen car. That was the beginning of his difficulties, but Schexnider compounded his problems by missing his scheduled court appearance. When the police showed up at his home to arrest him, that's when Joseph Schexnider decided to disappear.
He did a good job. He disappeared for 27 years. During that time nobody, not his mother, nor his family knew where he had gone.
But now Joseph Schexnider has been found, sort of.
As best as anyone can figure out, Schexnider decided to finance his disappearance by robbing the local bank. In all probability that was his intention when he slid down the bank's unused chimney.
I ought to say that differently. Schexnider started to slide down the chimney. He made it part way and then he got stuck -- permanently stuck.
Joseph Schexnider's mother never reported him missing because she knew the police were after her boy. The family never reported him missing because Schexnider had a habit of leaving town without telling them where he was going, or how long he would be gone.
Authorities surmise that 27 years ago Joseph Schexnider, stuck in a bank's chimney, died of dehydration. Knowing that nobody knew where he was, that nobody was looking for him, it had to be a long, a lonely way to die.
Of course, there was one Person who knew where Schexnider was. I wonder if during those long hours, were his thoughts ever turned to the Lord? Did he ask for help? Did he pray for forgiveness? Did he receive comfort from the knowledge the Savior wanted to be with him? The Lord alone knows the answers to those questions.
Now I doubt that any of us have ever felt as alone as Joseph Schexnider did. Even so, almost all of us have times when we feel alone. Most of us have experienced days, weeks and months when we felt nobody cared about us, nobody was looking for us, nobody would notice if we just disappeared.
If you have ever experienced these feelings, I hope you know there is no place where we can go that is too hidden for the Lord not to know where we are.
Even more, the Lord who knows, also cares. He who gave His Son to carry our sins and save our souls from eternal damnation always cares.
There is comfort in that knowledge we have a Lord and Savior who will always care -- no matter where we are, or in what situation we get stuck.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for keeping tabs on me, I give thanks. For caring about where I am and what happens to me, I give thanks. For sending Your Son to save my soul, I shall always be grateful. Now I pray You will keep me safe. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

I don't know too much about this day, because I'm not a woman. What I do know is that the sign up sheet is on the table in the narthex and the ladies always have a wonderful time of fellowship, Bible study, and relaxation!
It is one of the highlights of my year. Great golf, even better food, and excellent friends all gathered together in the fellowship of God and His Word. Call 359-1061 or email me to ask all the questions you want.
If you don't want to stay for the whole weekend, just come up for the day on Saturday. If want to stay for the whole weekend but don't want to sleep in the bunkhouses there are many other options including camping in tents on the grounds, going to a campground nearby that has hookups, or staying in the hotels in Perry or Monroe City only a few miles away.
The ninth annual T-3 Men's Retreat is set for Friday-Sunday, September 23-25, 2011.This promises to be another great experience for the men of St John's and other Lutheran congregations in the St. Charles area.In fact, men from all over the metro area have joined this special time in the past.Men 18 years of age or older are eligible and they need not be Lutheran to attend.The retreat will be held at Mark Twain State Park at the Si Coburn Group Camp.This is a beautiful setting for a weekend of adventure and growth.The theme of this year's retreat is "Respectable Sins" and the study times during the retreat will be spent exploring the areas of our lives where we have come to accept less than God might want from us.
The retreat will feature great food and a lot of activitiesA scramble golf tournament, fishing tournament, trap and skeet shooting competition, and euchre tournament all take place on Saturday morning. If none of these interest you, you may choose to spend time reading, hiking , biking, site seeing, or napping.Prizes are awarded to tournament winners at dinner on Saturday evening. Campfires on Friday and Saturday nights provide the opportunity to get to know others better under the stars. Music is a big part of the camp experience and you will enjoy hearing and singing familiar songs with the 100+ men who typically attend.The culminating worship service on Sunday morning is a special time of praising God for all His gifts to us and a great way to prepare us to return to our homes and lives.
The cost of the retreat is only $42 and this includes meals and a commemorative tee-shirt.Attendees have the option of staying in group cabins or tent camping on the grounds at no additional charge.You can even arrange to stay in a local motel near the camp at reduced rates if you like.

We are signed up to go down there Friday, Sept 30 and Sat, Oct 1! It is an unforgetable and wonderful experience. Make plans ot attend!
3. Last Sunday of each month- HANGING OUT WITH PASTOR- We will meet at different time and at different locations throughout the year to have some fun and to get into God's Word. In August we will meet to clean up the highway and have a picnic after worship. Most of the time we will meet on Sunday evenings.
Invite your friends to all of these things. It is a great way for them to see that Christianity is pretty cool and can be a lot of fun!

In the last months we have heard a lot of talk about trillions of dollars.
Even so, when I heard that a temple in India has been found which holds a treasure worth $11.2 billion, I was still impressed.
It's true. Great vaults of treasure, treasure including golden statues, diamonds and other gems have been found in the 16th-century Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple.
Five of the temple's six vaults have already been excavated, and crews were beginning to open the last vault when they were stopped. No, they were not stopped by the great statue of a cobra that guards the door. They were stopped by some protestors who feel their god would become angry if the last vault were opened.
Astrologers were asked for a ruling on what should be done.
After a number of days the astrologers reported the temple was guarded by the curse of the cobra. That means the treasure should remain untouched, and anyone who went forward and opened the vault would find his children dying from the bite of a cobra or by some other poisonous process.
Now I've got no opinion on the treasure or the astrologers or their judgments.
On the other hand, I have taken note of the fact that the Triune God works differently than this Hindu deity.
While the Hindu god wants to keep people away from his treasure, our God's greatest wish is for His treasure to be shared with all humanity.
Of course, you already know that Jesus is the treasure, is our treasure.
With Jesus as our Savior, we are rich beyond imagining. Because of His sacrifice on Calvary's cross we are forgiven, we are at peace and we are recipients of eternal life. As far as I can tell, there are no greater riches than those which are bestowed upon us through the blood of the crucified and ever-living Savior.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, often we pray that You will be merciful to poor, miserable sinners. That You have in Your mercy decided to send Your Son to be our Savior makes us rich beyond imagining. Now I pray that You will use my talents to share the riches of the Redeemer with the rest of lost humanity. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

A number of years ago, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum decided to make Dubai into a mecca for tourism.
Just one of his projects was the creation of some man-made islands -- islands which were to be filled with homes, apartments and resort hotels: the best homes, apartments and resort hotels money could buy.
Well, one of those islands, Palm Island, is complete. Folks who have bought houses there have paid premium prices for these homes, which have and are the best of the best.
Some of the cheaper shacks on the island started selling at $1.5 million, and $10 million would have put a person into a pretty cushy home. Of course, that was when the places started selling. Since then inflation has set in and the costs have gone up considerably.
Now you might imagine the owners would be completely content in their modern-day Eden. If you imagined that you were wrong. That's because the island has had a problem -- a plumbing problem. This problem began when one of the water pipes began to leak. One leaky pipe led to others, and soon the homeowners found not a single sink, shower or toilet would work.
It was a problem which went on for days. At least one person has said, "It doesn't make much difference how much you pay for your home, if you don't have water, the place is worthless."
Jesus said much the same thing to the Samaritan woman at the well.
Speaking to humankind's spiritual thirst, Jesus said He was the water that would completely and eternally satisfy.
And what is this spiritual thirst? It is everyman's heartfelt desire to have his sins removed; it is a hope to find peace; it is a longing to know that when his life is over, there will be hope and heaven awaiting him -- not despair and damnation.
So that we might have that spiritual thirst quenched, Jesus entered this world. To that end, He lived a perfect life, resisted all temptations and carried our sins with Him to the cross. Then, by virtue of His resurrection from the dead, He showed that not even death could rob us of the living water, which Holy Spirit-given faith in Him provides.
No, it doesn't make much difference how much you have or what you own, without Jesus life is an unending, unmet thirst.
With Him, with His living water, there is spiritual satisfaction and salvation for the soul.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for all the earthly blessings You have given me -- gifts I often take for granted -- I wish here and now to show my appreciation. Even as I do so, I recognize these things are unimportant without the Savior. That You have sent Him and placed faith within me is the most precious blessing of all. In Jesus' Name, I give thanks.
